ROSS & HEATHER GANGE

When we decided to develop part of our property (The Lemon Tree Stud), where we have lived for 43 years, we quickly realised undertaking a residential development was going to be daunting and certainly overwhelming. Due to those negatives, we came to the conclusion we were out of our depth and needed assistance, so we approached Development Edge’s Peter Mintern and Michael Lewis to undertake the subdivision totally themselves.

They were in the process of developing Seven Creeks Estate which adjoined our property. With their extensive expertise, networks, knowledge and experience we were able to structure a contract of

sale that resulted in the development of our land.

From our first meeting with Peter and Michael we both felt instantly comfortable with them undertaking this project. We were impressed with their open communication, attention to detail and professionalism.

When Development Edge became involved, the project was expedited and all the blocks sold extremely quickly. They took care of everything.

We couldn’t be happier as we would not have achieved the final positive outcome ourselves. We are extremely proud of the finished product, Sevens View in the Seven Creek Estate.

STORY: TAYLAH BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY: MEGAN FISHER

BACK IN 2019, BRANDON AND AMY COOPER WERE LIVING IN A TINY UNIT. A PET WOULD’VE BEEN UNTHINKABLE LET ALONE FINDING A CAT TO SWING. BUT QUIETLY, A GRANDMASTER PLAN WAS UNFOLDING.

CALCULATED. PASSIONATE. NERVED. A high-stakes game of chess is always laced by this triad and governed solely by rules.

But what if that rulebook was no more?

What you are left with is something likened to what Brandon and Amy Cooper experienced as first-time homebuyers — a monochromatic space prevailed of barricades and possessed with beauty deserving of an audience.

The Coopers moved into their two-bedroom abode nearly two years ago, a long-awaited reward after years tantalised.

The time in stand-by came as no surprise though — it was a COVID-19 build after all.

Eight months of no development, a period staring at an empty slab, and instead of watching the grass grow, it was the unrelenting weeds seen seething through the property.

Our Home Spring 2023 9

Looking at the house now, radiating its pristine presence, the nihility it once was seems unfathomable.

Inside, a neutral white palette provided the clean slate to the interior and black accents permeate throughout, carrying the ultimate noir aesthetic into every room.

“Once I decided to get black shutters everything became black and I realised I’d leaned into a theme now,” Amy said.

“It was an easy decision to run with because we could pull out these black shutters and all this black stuff and change it and it would look completely different because of the white base.”

The black aluminium shutters in the dining area, which are also in the bathrooms, was a strong contender to be the feature accent, until the dining table arrived.

Softened by its circular shape and topped with a bright floral arrangement, the solid black dining table is a magnetising amenity for visitors.

The same pop of colour created by the verdure extends to the house’s exterior.

“The one thing I wanted was magnolias — we have 36. They flower all-year-round and they’ll eventually grow up over the fence and become a bit of a screen,” Amy said.

After the decision was made to wrap the yard in magnolias, the landscaper heeded the Cooper’s vision and was able to hone in on the design.

A floating deck surrounded by curved garden

beds and artificial grass is a pleasure to gaze at for any guest on arrival.

But the real attraction is the alfresco area in the backyard.

At the end of every day, the couple are enticed to eat outside in the heated outdoor space, which is enclosed in screens on a base of decking.

“We didn’t have landscaping until December last year, almost a year after we’d moved in. It was just mud everywhere,” Amy said.

“The landscapers did it all in the span of a week, the week before Christmas, and all the trees were planted two days before Christmas.”

Our Home Sprting 2023 10

Whether it’s a holiday or a festivity, the Coopers are no strangers to a celebration.

The couple married in January 2021, purchasing the land of their first home smack-bang in the middle of wedding planning.

It was a risky manoeuvre, but one that allowed strength to prosper in their relationship throughout the anxiety-filled weeks leading up to matrimony.

“It was so stressful, and we were living in chaos in the rental with boxes of stuff everywhere,” Amy said.

“It was a relief actually when we finally had the wedding because I thought now I only have one thing to work on.”

Today’s stresses can be washed away in the luxurious ensuite featuring a triple shower, double vanity, and plenty of storage space hidden behind glass mirrors.

It gives an essence of hotel indulgence that is carried through to the master bedroom’s crisp white covers, a common colour associated with bedding in an otherwise unique setting.

“I don’t like to get things that everybody has, I like things that are a little bit different – like the Cooper Home sign I got recently — things that are personalised to us because then I know nobody else is going to have it,” Amy said.

Our Home Spring 2023 11

“It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of what’s trending, but, in my opinion, having a house that’s a lot different to everybody else’s, and putting all our personal touches to it, makes it ours.”

Amy’s style has certainly caught the eye of online audiences, thousands in fact.

“The Instagram @cooper.home was made as something for myself to document and look back on the build.

“I thought after the build it’d be finished, but apparently people still care, and it’s become a bit of an interior design page.

“If we do another build, I think people would be interested in that for sure.”

I, myself, by the end of this interview, was enamoured.

Heading off, I was compelled to take one final glance back, but it wasn’t the house drawing attention this time.

Brandon and Amy are standing in the doorway of their first home, a glint of reflection in their eyes at how far they’ve come from that tiny unit.

It’s checkmate, and the Coopers have won.

Outdoor magical glow

LET THE TWINKLING ENCHANTMENT OF FAIRY LIGHTS TURN YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS INTO A MAGICAL WONDERLAND THAT DELIGHTS ALL WHO ENTER.

LET THEM WARM your space and lift your mood as their colours shine around your home.

And let their magic glow a delicate and charming touch all year round.

Personally, I love them. I need to hang more.

And when I jump online to see what other people are doing with them, I am instantly inspired.

A couple of my personal favourites are hanging them around trees and trellises in the garden to illuminate the greenery and add a whimsical touch.

However, I also love when they are hung around pergolas as they transform the space and create a cosy and inviting atmosphere for outdoor gatherings and relaxation.

I’ve seen them hung on fences which looks incred-

ible too and creates a stunning boundary but adds a touch of elegance as well.

There are so many options, and they are limited only to your own unique outlook.

Go crazy or be subtle, the choice is yours.

Just remember to ensure that the fairy lights you purchase are suited for outdoor use and can withstand the weather conditions in your area.

Additionally, look into both solar and power options to see what will work best for your space and ensure lights are securely fastened to prevent them from falling or being damaged by wind or other elements.

Be creative and let your outdoor space come to life, with light.

Palette promotes ‘look at me’

AS THE FLOWERS

AND COLOUR

EVEN JUST SUBTLE changes to our spaces, like painting the skirting boards or the edge of a door a fun colour, can have a dramatic effect on the overall vibe of your home.

With Dulux predicting a colour forecast filled with warm, earthy neutrals and lots of uplifting colour, spring is the perfect time to bring some colour into your space.

Taking inspiration from rose pink, breezy blue, sunshine yellow, emerald, violet and burnt orange, this year’s Dulux’s Revive palette is an instant mood lifter.

Dulux’s colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr said this year’s Revive palette was all about unexpected colour combinations and bright hues.

“Pairing retro influences with futuristic features, such as pixel patterns and digital art, the Revive palette cleverly merges the past and present,” Andrea said.

“And with its colourful, look-at-me accent walls and statement seating, it creates the perfect Instagrammable moment.”

Spring is the perfect time to look at your home and see what areas are in dire need of some colour.

Painting a wall, bookshelf or bedhead are quick DIYs that can completely transform and revive your space.

Experiment with colour combinations, patterns and furniture to create your dream home.

Labour of love

A LOVE FOR GARDENING ALONGSIDE FOND CHILDHOOD MEMORIES PROMPTED BILL AND DENISE HIPWELL TO CREATE THEIR OWN GARDEN OASIS.

Our Home Sprting 2023 18

BILL AND DENISE Hipwell’s shared love for gardening, coupled with cherished childhood memories, served as the driving force behind their personal garden sanctuary.

The gardening power couple secured their forever home on a spacious 2700m2 plot in Dookie, seven years ago, and haven’t looked back.

The property, offering captivating views of Mt Saddleback, presented a blank canvas upon which they could transform their gardening aspirations into a vibrant reality.

From the front entrance to the rear fence, the retired couple has transformed their outdoor space into a captivating display of colours and creativity.

Dubbing their endeavour, a “labour of love”, the Hipwells find solace and tranquillity within their garden oasis.

It provides them with a haven of peace and the liberty to spend their days immersed amid an array of flowers, vegetables and native habitats. Notably, their garden also houses nine charming hens, affectionately referred to as “our girls”.

“It’s like a full-time job,” Bill said humorously. Acknowledging the dedication required to tend to their horticultural haven.

“But what we don’t get done today, will be their waiting for us tomorrow.”

Both Bill and Denise attribute their passion for gardening to their early years, during which they actively participated in weeding, mowing lawns and nurturing family vegetable gardens.

Their experiences outdoors and their involvement in familial chores kindled their enduring love for the craft.

“As children, we were both always outside helping with family chores. We loved it then and just as much now,” Denise said.

“We are lucky to have good health, breath in the fresh air and be at one with ourselves in such a peaceful place.”

After a hot summer the pair look forward to a cooler autumn and equally enjoy the contrast the season brings as leaves change colour and brighten their space.

Our Home Spring 2023 21

However, spring is when their garden comes to life.

A mixture of native and cottage plants in a thriving environment blossom and bloom for as far as the eye can see.

“It’s magical,” Denise said.

“The maples, all the colours, the bird life, and the bees.

“We even have a family of fairy-wrens that have moved in, and we quite often see kookaburras.”

With new projects constantly on the horizon, Bill enjoys exploring the local marketplace pages in search of bargains.

Pre-loved items are often transformed into new features and infuse an extra layer of uniqueness into their surroundings.

Their dedication radiates from every corner of their meticulously curated space, and shows their commitment to cultivating a haven that mirrors their shared journey and passions.

Depending on the season, whether they are pottering around or pursuing a specific mission, they ensure they allocate time to walk and sit, and just enjoy the opportunity to admire their hard work.

From drab to fab

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO GIVE UPCYCLING FURNITURE A GO, BUT JUST DIDN’T KNOW WHERE TO START? WELL, IN THE CURRENT SOCIETY WHERE SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS AND BUDGET-CONSCIOUSNESS ARE ON THE RISE, NOW IS THE TIME TO GET CREATIVE WITH A DIY PROJECT.

LET’S GIVE THAT piece of furniture that’s been collecting dust in your shed, a second lease on life.

If you have the vision already, great, you’re halfway there. If you need some inspiration on what piece of furniture to transform, there are plenty of online resources, books, and magazines, even pay attention to the furniture in stores and cafes.

Once you have the vision, you can choose a piece of furniture to transform.

You can utilise an item you already have or get resourceful and hunt down a pre-loved piece of furniture at a second-hand store, online marketplace, garage sale, clearing sale and auctions or even rescue a piece of your neighbour’s unwanted furniture from going into landfill.

Upcycling is the art of turning those forgotten furniture items — a worn-out wooden chair, a weary entryway table, a beaten-up bookshelf, or a dated dining table — into one-of-a-kind statement piece that you can proudly display in your home.

Before you get stuck into your upcycling adventure, ensure to gather these essentials — sandpaper, paintbrushes, paint and primer, along with some protective gear, and you’ll be ready to get your hands dirty and start your upcycling journey.

If it’s the first time trying your hand at upcycling — don’t be scared.

You don’t have to be a DIY pro to give upcycling furniture a shot.

This is a great opportunity to tap into your creative side and experiment with different paint colours, patterns and stencils, distressing techniques and more.

With your imagination, a touch of paint and some shiny new hardware — you’ve got yourself a masterpiece.

There are lots of benefits to upcycling a piece of furniture. In today’s world of economic increase, and environmental worries, I think a lot of us will be reaching for the paint brush rather than splurg-

After the drawers and hardware had been carefully pulled apart, the sanding back process revealed a beautiful timber top and the remainder of the console table was treated with two coats of paint primer.

ing on an expensive piece of furniture (that you will probably get sick of in a year’s time).

Giving a new life to old furniture is a great way to be eco-friendly.

You’ll be actively reducing waste and be doing your part in minimising your carbon footprint, all without sacrificing style or breaking the bank. Just because you are upcycling — doesn’t mean it can’t be chic.

My advice would be to embrace your creativity and let your instinct guide you. It doesn’t matter if you have missteps along the way — enjoy the creative process and the rewarding result of having a stunning piece of furniture which resonates with your personal style, ensuring you won’t tire of it any time soon.

– Melissa Gee, The Rural Design Co.

After some back and fourth, I decided to retain the original drawer hardware.

This console table wasn’t in bad shape, but it was in need of a spruce up to make it feel brand new again.
Our Home Sprting 2023 24

I decided to stick with the authentic timber top and coat it with a natural finish lacquer for protection. A coat of fresh white paint on the drawers and legs gave this console table a timeless and contemporary feel. Topped off with some décor pieces I already had — which are all local second-hand store finds, along with a cutting from my lovely neighbours indoor plant — she was ready for display in our front entry.

Spring into action

SPRING HAS ARRIVED, AND WITH IT COMES THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO OUR LIVING SPACES THROUGH THE AGE-OLD TRADITION OF SPRING CLEANING.

YES, YOU READ that heading correctly, and the lead-in clearly mentioned the words ‘spring cleaning.’ I know, breathe, and let’s talk.

Getting through an average week can be a challenge, to say the least. My greys seem to grow at different speeds these days, and when I open my eyes on a Monday and think about the week ahead, I won’t lie, sometimes I want to just shut them and think about some magic fairy giving me some ultra powers to proceed on.

Work, kids, a husband and the never-ending duties of the ‘much-loved housework,’ seem to be a constant ‘obligation’ — I mean, wondrous experience.

So, when the words ‘spring cleaning’ come into play when it’s finally time to open the windows and breathe some fresh air, those words feel both ugly and hard.

I have spent months telling my kids to stop leaning on the white walls like they are black and suggesting to my husband to stop leaving things around, but I have also spent months pushing my clothes back into my exploding wardrobe and my office feels like a treasure chest of everything school drawings and craft.

Our home is ready for some spring attention and it’s time to spring into ‘spring cleaning mode,’ blame no-one in the process and try and have some fun while getting it all done.

Whether you’re preparing to tackle the entire house or focusing on specific areas, the spring-cleaning journey is a chance to transform our surroundings and create a space that radiates with warmth and joy — imagine!

Here are some spring-cleaning motivation ideas that may help embrace this annual ritual with enthusiasm and without losing your mind, a friend, and your family in the process.

In my case, making sure myself or my husband don’t get any more grey hairs will be an added bonus.

And when inside is all done it will be time to tackle the lawnmower, whipper snipper, pressure washer, the leaf blower and according to my husband also the chainsaw.

Stay tuned for the next spring clean. Good luck!

ENLIST HELP: Get your family or room-mates involved in the cleaning process, divide tasks and work together. Have fun with the kids while doing it and reward them for their help. Reward the other people too if their help needs further encouragement.

CREATE A PLAYLIST: Make a playlist of your favourite upbeat songs to keep you energised while cleaning.

BEFORE AND AFTER: Take pictures of the areas you clean before and after the process. Seeing the transformation can be motivating. Make sure no-one is ‘Netflixing’ about on the couch while you work your magic around them, or do and make them feel terrible for not helping.

REWARDS: Treat yourself with something you enjoy after completing a significant portion of the cleaning. An ice-cream, beer, or wine — pick your treat.

BREAK TASKS INTO SMALLER STEPS:

If a task feels overwhelming, break it into smaller, more manageable steps. Approach room by room rather than trying to tackle the whole home at once. Also, take a break so you don’t inhale too much dust and cleaning chemicals, which could ultimately ruin the rest of the day.

VISUALISE THE END RESULT: Imagine how wonderful your space will look and feel once it’s clean and organised. Also, visualise yourself sitting in that amazingly clean, fresh space, eating an icecream, drinking a beer, or sipping a wine — again, whatever your choice.

Create seats with pallets

MAKING A PALLET COUCH IS A FUN DIY PROJECT THAT IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE WITH A FEW BASIC TOOLS AND MATERIALS.

HERE’S A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO HELP YOU CREATE YOUR OWN.

MATERIALS:

Wooden pallets (the number depends on the size and design you want)

Sandpaper

Paint or wood stain (optional)

Cushions or foam pads

Upholstery fabric

Staple gun and staples

Saw (if you need to cut the pallets)

Screws and a drill (optional, for added stability)

MEASURE AND PLAN

Decide on the size and layout of your pallet couch. Measure the space where you’ll place the couch and choose pallets accordingly. You can stack the pallets horizontally or vertically to create the desired height and width.

PREPARE THE PALLETS

Inspect the pallets to ensure they are in good condition and free from any splinters or protruding nails. Sand down rough edges and surfaces to prevent any potential injuries.

PAINT OR STAIN (OPTIONAL)

If you want to give your pallet couch a new look, consider painting or staining the pallets. Choose a colour that matches your décor or theme. Allow the paint or stain to dry before proceeding.

ASSEMBLE THE PALLETS

Arrange the pallets in the desired configuration to form the base of your couch. You can stack them vertically or lay them horizontally. If you need to adjust the size, use a saw to cut the pallets.

SECURE THE PALLETS (OPTIONAL)

For added stability, you can screw the pallets together. Pre-drill holes to avoid splitting the wood and then use screws to attach them firmly.

ADD CUSHIONING

Place cushions or foam pads on top of the pallets to create a comfortable seating area. You can find cushions that fit the dimensions of the pallets or use foam and cover it with fabric.

UPHOLSTER THE COUCH

To give your pallet couch a polished look, cover the cushions and pallets with upholstery fabric. Alternatively, you can use old blankets or sheets if you’re going for a rustic style. Wrap the fabric tightly around the pallets and cushions, staple it in place underneath the pallets.

ADD FINISHING TOUCHES

Inspect the couch to make sure everything is secure and tidy up loose ends or staples. You can also add decorative pillows and throws to enhance the comfort and aesthetics.

That’s it. Your DIY pallet couch is ready to enjoy. Remember, the beauty of this project lies in its versatility, so get creative and customise a perfect couch.

Unleashing adventure and imagination

Our Home Sprting 2023 30
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY

THE RING OF A phone pierces the air — a sudden summons to action. In the blink of an eye, a ladder is swiftly ascended, and the resounding clang of a bell echoes through the surroundings.

It’s the unmistakable signal that excites everyone within earshot. A call to rally, a call to heroism. And just like that, the stage is set for an exhilarating adventure.

Fun chaos emerges from the red, two-storey fire station and Paw Patrol inspired cubbyhouse in the Poole’s backyard oasis.

The dynamic trio at the heart of these adventures, Remi, Hugo and Otis, spring into rescue mode like mini heroes.

With every clang of the alarm bell, a sense of exhilaration fills the air, setting the stage for a spirited spectacle that is as heart-warming as it is heart-pounding for parents Jono and Pia.

“It is so much fun,” Pia said.

“They certainly have brought a lot of imagination to our backyard.

“As soon as we hear that bell, everyone has to run to help save the day — the boys absolutely love it.”

The boys’ dream cubby came to fruition through a COVID-19 snap while father Jono had a bit of time up his sleeve.

He admitted the project did bring some frustration. However, the outcome was worth it.

“There were definitely a few hours that went into it, and a few locations where it was built,” he said.

“It’s in it’s forever home now though, it’s too big to move again.”

The cubby masterpiece now stands proudly on the family’s cherished forever block, a prelude to the future that awaits.

In a conversation with youthful enthusiasm, the boys were asked a simple question: “Does your cubbyhouse need anything else?”

With eyes that sparkled with possibility, they responded with the innocence of visionaries.

“A fridge,” Hugo said.

And then, with cosmic wonder, Remi added, “And a telescope,” a silent nod to the mysteries of the universe that beckon to be explored.

The idea of a cubbyhouse stems from imagination itself. Be inspired, be creative and dare to dream big.

The style EDIT

WE KNOW HOW HARD IT CAN BE KEEPING UP WITH THE TRENDS COMING IN AND OUT OF CIRCULATION, SO OUR HOME REACHED OUT TO PAULA DOHRMAN FROM WALLS AND WINDOWS FOR SOME INSPIRATION AFTER HER RECENT VISIT TO THE MELBOURNE REED GIFT FARE.

“CRAFTING A SOPHISTICATED interior design revolves around blending various elements seamlessly,” Paula said.

“This spring, the current trends seem to be a mix of light timbers and soft, natural colours as the base, that help create a tranquil ambiance.

“There was lots of stunning abstract and photographic artwork, that can add visual interest to a room.

“Beautiful artificial flower arrangements and organic vases were also very popular.

“To extend this season’s theme, play with textures using cushions, throws, and rugs. Experiment with wallpapers or wooden panels to enrich the walls subtly.

“By harmonising these elements, you’ll create a professional and inviting space that balances nature and artistry seamlessly and everything can be incorporated while staying well within a budget, ” Paula said.

Perfectly pretty in pink

IN A WORLD WHERE ELEGANCE MEETS ENCHANTMENT, ALONGSIDE ONE GIRL’S DETERMINED DREAM TO BREATHE LIFE BACK INTO AGED BONES, THE DOLL HOUSE COTTAGE’S JOURNEY UNVEILS A STORY OF TRANSFORMATION THAT ENCAPSULATES THE MAGIC OF CHERISHED MEMORIES AND TIMELESS CHARM.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Our Home Spring 2023 35

MARY SURATMAN still remembers the day when she contemplated to her younger self that she would one day purchase the rental property she lived in with her son.

Thirteen years later, six renovations to date, Mary’s Doll House Cottage dreams have become a reality.

The 1939 home now breathes new, vibrant, and elegant touches, fills rooms with the warmth of natural light and has a blend of gentle colours alongside a pretty pink palette.

It showcases features of freshness, history, modern appliances and upcycled materials and furniture.

However, alongside every renovation, there are months, weeks, and hours of labour that are passionately put into making dreams come true.

And without the help from local trades and the unwavering support from husband John Wallan, Mary’s Doll House dream would never have come true.

“I think he knew how much the home meant to me,” Mary said.

“When we purchased the property in late 2022, I was disappointed with how much the property had deteriorated, but it didn’t put me off.

“John seemed a little concerned, but he became a jack of all trades throughout the almost fourmonth process,” she said, as John smiled and made a comment on how he was just doing what he was told.

Undeterred by dirty hands and hard work, Mary and John dived into their renovating action plan and quite literally got the ball rolling, and from there piece by piece, room by room, transformation occurred.

The bathroom, toilet, and laundry were all gutted. In fact, the bath was the only piece left standing.

Everything that could be salvaged was, and the pair were both in agreement that if anything could stay, it would, unless it had met its time.

“It was a busy time with lots of long days, hard work, and incredible local trades also helping in the areas we just needed a professional in,” John said.

“We upcycled a lot of furniture and tried not to throw anything out, except general appliances — they needed an upgrade.”

Mary, who has enjoyed the renovating scene for some time now, said that her go-to colour was normally duck egg blue.

“I feel like it was the only colour I knew,” she said, and then laughed.

“My second favourite colour is pink, and it was time to do something new.”

Our Home Spring 2023 37

The colour palette was locked in, the renovation was in full swing, and there was painting to be done, but as the hard work was coming together around them, so too were fond memories for Mary.

“I was having so many little flashbacks,” Mary said.

“Memories with my sister sitting in the lounge and kitchen — she has now passed.

“Moments with my eldest boy — it’s been magical.”

From pink walls to black doors, to white-painted floorboards, this home has class, retro styles, beauty, and a stunning well-thought-out unique theme that just works in every direction.

Mary and John said if you have a dream, are prepared to roll up your sleeves and get dirty, then a renovation could be a very rewarding life process.

“Set a budget, shop around, but most of all, have fun while you do it,” Mary said.

“Dream big — anything is possible.”

“Then take a holiday,” John said, as they both laughed.

Although for now, the couple has decided to list the property as an Airbnb, Mary admitted to sneaking off on occasions for a girl’s night at the property.

“I just love it,” she said.

“One day we will downsize and move in, but for now, I am happy to share it.

“I hope people love it as much as I do.”

“The bird attracting, and long flowering plant options are always popular,” Sally said.

“However, this season I am seeing many families invest in the Vegepods and Foodcube products.

“They are raised garden beds for backyard beginners or garden gurus, they are also very popular for

Have a ‘pawsome’ spring

KEEPING CATS SAFE AND HEALTHY IN SPRINGTIME REQUIRES SOME EXTRA CARE AND ATTENTION. SPRING CAN BRING ABOUT VARIOUS HAZARDS FOR CATS, SUCH AS NEW PLANTS, WILDLIFE, AND CHANGES IN WEATHER.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR FELINE FRIEND STAYS SAFE DURING THIS SEASON.

Flea and tick prevention: Springtime can see an increase in fleas and ticks, so make sure your cat is protected with appropriate flea and tick prevention medications recommended by your veterinarian.

Vaccinations: Ensure your cat’s vaccinations are up-to-date to protect them from common springtime diseases and viruses.

Toxic plants: Spring brings new growth and flowering plants, but some of them can be toxic to cats. Research and remove any toxic plants from your home and garden.

Spring cleaning products: Be cautious with household cleaning products, as some can be toxic to cats.

Allergies: Just like humans, cats can suffer from seasonal allergies. If you notice any signs of allergies like sneezing, watery eyes, or itching, consult your veterinarian for appropriate treatment.

Provide shade and water: As the weather gets warmer, make sure your cat has access to shade and

plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated.

Check for hiding spots: Cats might find new places to hide or explore as the environment changes with the season. Be mindful of potential hiding spots and ensure they’re safe.

Indoor enrichment: If your cat is mainly indoors, provide plenty of enrichment activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

ID tags: Make sure your cat has a collar with an ID tag containing your contact information. Additionally, microchipping your cat can greatly increase the chances of being reunited if they get lost. By following these tips, you can help ensure your cat has a safe and enjoyable springtime. Always consult your veterinarian if you have specific concerns about your cat’s health or behaviour.

Impressive flower art

DECORATING WALLS CAN FEEL LIKE A DAUNTING TASK, BUT THE TWO GREATEST FORCES ARE HERE TO HELP — NATURE AND TIME.

PRESSED FLOWERS can transform any space and mould to any aesthetic.

You can create your own piece to fill a wall, complete a room, or do it just for fun.

The process of pressing flowers has been around since the 16th century, with Japanese artists using the process to create large artworks.

There are many ways to press flowers to create your desired look, and these processes can be found on websites, in books and through video tutorials, so we won’t bore you with the details.

However, here’s a quick run down so you can feel confident in getting started.

The first step is to gather your flowers, pick them from your garden, use up the

flowers from your vase or support local florists and use their petals, leaves and buds to create your artwork.

Then we press them. There are multiple methods to pressing flowers including using a book, a clamp to hold down wood pieces or purchasing DIY flower pressing kit, this process tends to take two to four weeks.

Once the flowers have been dried and pressed, feel free to use them to create your final piece in anyway you like.

An Our Home favourite display, is to place the flowers on a glass frame, and by using a second piece of glass to hold the flowers together, creates the illusion of floating.

Happy flower pressing.

Maximising a property to sell

PREPARING TO PUT YOUR PROPERTY ON THE MARKET?

LUSH PROPERTY OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE WITH ESSENTIAL TIPS TO HELP YOU MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON POTENTIAL BUYERS AND MAXIMISE YOUR SELLING POTENTIAL.

• Stand at the front of your property and look at it like a buyer would. Do you need to trim up some plants? Mow the lawns? Add some new chip bark? Refresh your mailbox? These can add to a great first impression for a buyer and can be done relatively cheaply.

• Upgrade your lighting. Whether it’s having some extra lights added to your home, or changing over lights with higher output ones, you can almost never have enough lighting in your home. It will create a more inviting feel throughout.

• De-cluttering. It’s on every sellers to do list but it is very cost effective and can create a massive change. Don’t forget to take all the magnets and children’s artwork off the fridge, and also consider putting away any family photos. Buyers want to imagine themselves in the home rather than being reminded that it’s someone else’s.

• Temperature control your house appropriately for the weather on inspection day. If it’s going to be warm, turn the cooler on or vice versa. Make sure it’s turned on with enough time to actually take effect prior to the inspection.

• Finalise all those odd jobs. Whether it’s fixing a leaking tap, patching a hole in the wall, putting some WD40 on a door hinge, or having a broken window replaced. Get all those little one per cent jobs done prior to inviting agents through and pay attention to the little things.

• Lastly, make sure you invite a number of prospective selling agents through your home and gather their feedback on presentation, buyer demographic, potential market price, and sales evidence to support the quoted sales price. Go with the agent that makes you feel comfortable and can support their estimated sales price, not the agent that quotes the highest price.

THE SILVER LINING!

There’s no doubt that the current economic outlook is a little gloomy, but there is a silver lining. Building costs in the past few years have skyrocketed to all-time new levels across the Goulburn Valley. The high costs are driven by an overwhelming backlog of building contracts throughout the region, with most builders having 12 months of work ahead of them to catch up. Notwithstanding this, the future for block investment and residential building looks bright.

Those looking to build in the next couple of years should take the opportunity to secure a block now as there will be a lack of new development estates and land available over the next few years. It’s also important to keep in mind that developers have paid today’s market price for Englobo (undeveloped) land to develop, and the high cost of developing estates will make it difficult to sell blocks in the future for less than an average of $300,000, depending on size and location.

Piece by beautiful piece

NICKNAMED THE ETERNAL PICTURES

BECAUSE OF THEIR DURABILITY, MOSAICS ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL FORMS OF ART IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND.

Our Home Sprting 2023 60
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY

MOSAIC ART DISCOVERIES can be dated back to more than 5000 years ago, in the ancient historical region of West Asia.

Today, the techniques and intricate skills are still practised, forming unique and modern art to be admired in and out of the home.

The complexity, the colour, and the shapes can be fascinating, and piece by piece, Shepparton wife, mother and grandmother Gay Flemming’s artistic expression is one to be admired.

Her decorative designs, from birdbaths, flowerpots, wall art, picture frames, candle holders and oil burners, are made by assembling small pieces of coloured glass, stones, ceramic, pebbles, or other materials to form patterns and pictures.

It’s with attention to detail and her unique way of conceptualising each piece that her love for mosaicking continues to grow.

As her home fills with treasured pieces, Gay’s tricks of the trade, insightful knowledge, and pas-

sion for everything mosaic are now being shared with the community in art classes held at the Shepparton South Community Centre.

“There are no limits to your own creativity,” Gay said.

“It does take time and patience, and rarely a piece is finished in one day.

“However, the end result is worth it and can leave you feeling a real sense of achievement knowing you have done it all by yourself.”

Gay draws some of her inspiration from local artists and silo art from all over the region.

She also learns a lot from online tutorials and said she was always looking for ways to show the real world and her ideas on life and how she views it in some of her work.

Her favourite piece is her birdbath.

A piece that’s admired daily in the comfort of her front yard, but it’s the life that it draws that touches her the most.

“Just watching the little birds come in for a swim and listening to them sing is so beautiful,” she said.

“The crystals sparkle in the light, and the world, for a moment, seems to pause.

“Life can get busy — it’s nice to just stop at times and admire the beauty around you.

Then I get back to what also helps me fill in time — mosaicking,” she said, as she smiled.

If you’re wanting to explore the creativity of mosaicking, then Gay’s classes on Thursdays between 10am and noon are a must.

Otherwise, go online, be inspired, and add a touch of beauty and artistry to your life and home.

Blooming good idea

STORY: DJEMBE ARCHIBALD PHOTOGRAPHY: MEGAN FISHER

EVERYBODY LOVES a vase of flowers, but not all of us have the skill of a florist and Mel Sabri is here to help.

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Walt Disney all started their businesses out of garages, but most importantly, so did Mel.

For four years she has been running her dried flower arrangement business from her home and has even set up a hot house.

“During COVID-19, I did a lot of deliveries and I had a fair bit of down time to create some new things and talk about with my partner about how to dry my own things, as opposed to getting it sourced from overseas,” Mel said.

“I really wanted to be able to get things from here, if I can, around the area and then dry them out.

“So I put in a hothouse at the back of our home, where we dry a lot of native gum palm leaves, my hydrangeas, things like that.”

Mel puts in a lot of work, but we shouldn’t neglect the help of her fellow employees.

“I’ve got two kids and they’re quite young so they’re very hands on and help me with the flowers, which is lots of fun,” she said with a smile.

Her partner and kids are important parts of her life and business, but she is the business woman after all, the owner of For the Love of Blooms.

She could have chosen anything to start her business, so why dried flowers?

“People will buy dried flowers and they have them forever, which is fantastic and they’re very low maintenance, but I thought what else is something that I could do that’s different to everybody else,” she said.

“So, after about 12 months, there was another dried flower business and then there was another one and then there was about four in town, which is fantastic.

“I just wanted to see if I could keep offering something different, so I decided to do a bloom workshop, I call it a sip and bloom.”

The concept is similar to Tupperware parties, Mel will arrive at your home with a DIY kit to allow your guests to create an arrangement of their dreams.

“I’ll come to you and I’ll provide everything: brown paper craft bags and inside your bag will have everything that you need,” she said.

“You’ll have a pot with foam and then in the other side, you’ll have a pair of cutters and all of the products you need to create your pots.

“I always say, ‘this is your pot, your ideas, your creations’.”

Whether it’s three or 13 guests, Mel has seen it all, from hen’s nights, to birthday parties and pyjama nights.

Mel said that the evening was often paired with platters and wine, one party even had a cocktail bar.

“Everything’s just been so much fun and I’ve made so many new friends and those friends have told their friends and they’ve told their neighbours,” she said.

“It’s just really taken off in the July school holidays.”

Some participants may be nervous to try out the workshop, as most of us have never attempted florist arrangements, but Mel has been endlessly impressed.

“I make sure everybody is going really good and their creations look fantastic,” she said.

For a sneak peak at Mel’s work, pre-made arrangements can be bought at Emporium on High St, Shepparton.

A good prune never hurts

MAINTAINING

ONE CRUCIAL PRACTICE that contributes significantly to tree preservation is proper pruning. By selectively trimming branches, trees can thrive and continue to be an essential part of our landscapes for generations to come.

Austral Trees manager Steven McKenny sat down with Our Home to explain the various advantages that pruning offers — here is some information regarding why pruning trees is an investment in their wellbeing and endurance.

HEALTHY GROWTH

Pruning eliminates dead, diseased, or damaged branches, curbing the potential spread of infections. This encourages healthier growth and minimises the risk of pests wreaking havoc on your trees.

IMPROVED AIR CIRCULATION

Through strategic pruning, the canopy of a tree is thinned, enabling better air circulation. This reduces the likelihood of fungal diseases and permits sunlight to reach the tree’s inner recesses, boosting overall vitality.

AESTHETIC APPEAL

Properly pruned trees are visually appealing, showcasing a symmetrical and pleasing form. By shaping trees, their natural beauty can be enhanced, making them standout features in your landscape.

SAFETY AND RISK REDUCTION

Trimming away precarious or weak branches lowers the danger of falling limbs during storms or high winds. This not only safeguards people, but also protects property and nearby structures.

FRUITFUL REWARDS

For fruit-bearing trees, pruning can lead to more substantial and healthier fruit production. By focusing energy on the development of fruit-bearing branches, bountiful yields can be achieved.

STRENGTHENED STRUCTURE

Strategic pruning bolsters a tree’s structural integrity by removing branches prone to breakage, it also extends a tree’s lifespan.

SUNLIGHT’S EMBRACE

Pruning allows sunlight to penetrate the canopy, benefiting lower branches and the ground below. This is especially crucial for maintaining thriving grass and plants beneath the tree.

RESTORATION AND RENEWAL

Older or neglected trees can experience a revival through pruning. By removing congested growth, the canopy can be revitalised, extending the life of ageing trees and making them more resilient.

DISEASE DEFENCE

Promptly removing infected branches through pruning can help control and prevent disease spread. Adhering to proper sanitation practices during pruning further reduces disease transmission.

THE HEALTH AND LONGEVITY OF TREES GOES BEYOND THE SURFACE BEAUTY THEY OFFER TO OUR SURROUNDINGS.

Elevate a room’s space

IT PROVIDES A serene area for reading and observing children and pets at play.

Expansive windows serve as both an asset and a distinct feature.

However, as spring ushers in warmer days, the need to keep excessive heat at bay becomes essential, prompting the choice to close the blinds.

With an array of options now accessible, making a decision has grown more intricate.

The multitude of available types makes selecting blinds a challenging task due to the abundance of choices.

For this busy mum of three growing boys, Ellen Pollard, her choice on blinds was simple.

“I wanted something to blend back in with the wall and when open not interfere with our view,” Ellen said.

“It’s our favourite area of the home. And I really wanted something to balance the area, that felt neutral and added a touch of class.”

Ellen does have a bit of history in the design department, but she said her choice of heading to Tatura Blinds with a plan turned out to be easier and more affordable than expected.

“They were amazing,” she said.

“While we were building, they came out and did all the measurements, and everything

was ordered straight away.

“They gave us extra advice on other blinds — and we ended up putting sheers in our master bedroom and the honeycomb blinds in the kids’ rooms which help block out light.

“As soon as we got the keys to the house, they were installed.”

As Ellen’s experience exemplifies, the quest for the perfect blinds can indeed be simplified with expert guidance.

Whether aiming to harmonise with your space, maintain an unobstructed view, keep the heat out, or balance functionality with aesthetics, the right blinds can transform your home into a haven of comfort and elegance.

With professional insights and a diverse array of choices, achieving the ideal blend of natural light, privacy and style becomes an attainable goal.

Keep pesky pests at bay

AS WE HEAD INTO THE WARMER MONTHS, IT IS VITAL TO ENSURE YOUR HOME IS PROTECTED FROM OUTSIDE PESTS.

DAMIAN DOLLER from Pestology Pest Control’s shared some of his tips to help prevent those nuisance pests from entering and living in your homes.

“The number one pest you’ll be seeing as we head into the warmer months is spiders,” Damian said.

“There are three types of webbing spiders that you can expect to see inside and outside of your home.

“And, outside your home, black house spiders love to make their nests and webs in windows and doors.

“Redbacks hide in dark areas, behind shelving, in sheds and garage roller doors. While daddy Long Legs tend to make their way inside, hanging around your ceilings.”

As the weather gets warmer, now is the best time to prepare your home, and Damian said there was a lot you could do to prevent pests.

“From now on, as the weather warms up, a pest technician can do a preventative spray treatment

that will last a few months,” he said.

“So as spiders move around your home they encounter the chemical, die and break the breading cycle.”

Damian suggested sealing up any cracks and crevices as well as knocking down their webs to kill the spider and spraying any you see.

For other pests that come around in summer like cockroaches, he suggested keeping your home, especially your kitchen, clean.

All food scraps and crumbs should be thrown out each night, and open packets of food and pet food should be put away to help prevent cockroaches inhabiting your home,” he said.

Pest technicians like Damian can take a look at your home to tailor a solution for your needs, helping to keep your home pest-free this spring.

STEP INTO THE CAPTIVATING WORLD OF GORDON SANGSTER’S GARDEN, WHERE A FATHER-DAUGHTER BOND, A PASSION FOR PLANTS, AND A TREASURED MAN-CAVE CONVERGE TO CREATE A COLOURFUL OASIS IN SHEPPARTON.

Our Home Spring 2023 71
STORY: KELLY CARMODY PHOTOGRAPHY: MEGAN FISHER

BOUND BY BOTH love and good banter, the close relationship between Gordon Sangster and his daughter Monique shines with an undeniable warmth.

Their closeness is captivating. However, within their deep connection, there’s one remarkable difference that sets them apart — their approach to gardening.

Gordon’s passion for gardening is like a thriving spring flower, while Monique finds herself struggling to keep even the hardiest of plants alive.

Although Monique may not have inherited the green thumb, her pride in her father and his stunning garden prompted her to reach out to the Our Home team after seeing a post regarding a call out for spring gardens.

After a few sneaky emails and a conversation with her mother, Lynn, a date was set, and it was time for Gordon to hear the news.

“It was a meant-to-be moment,” Monique said.

“Mum and I were literally talking just days earlier about how beautiful Dad’s garden was, and we were sharing memories of Pop’s gardening too, then I saw the post.”

Gordon, however, was sceptical and thought the phone may have been listening to their conversation.

“I also didn’t think it was that great,” Gordon said.

“I mean, I like it, but that doesn’t mean other people will. It’s not that I don’t appreciate it, but it did take me by surprise,” he said, as he adoringly looked towards Monique.

Monique then laughed and made a comment on how busy the weekend prior to our meeting was for her father, getting the garden ready.

The family has called this house their home in Shepparton for almost 35 years.

Although it was only five years ago, during a rare break from his busy schedule, that Gordon realised the garden was due for a change.

Our Home Sprting 2023 72

So off he set, and his love for gardening is now evident as you step through their front gate.

Amid the diverse array of plants and unique pieces adorning every corner, the garden holds cherished family stories that warm their hearts.

Fond memories of Gordon’s Dad, a passionate gardener in his own time, are embedded in the soil, adding a sentimental touch to their green and colourful sanctuary.

“I remember helping him on the school holidays in the garden,” Gordon said.

“There is also an orange tree in the backyard that reflects a rather funny story, one I can only tell you off the record.

“It’s just a peaceful space, one with nature, and it works wonders for mental health. I love roses, both the flower and the smell, and anything that shows colour all year round.

“My wife Lynn also loves all the birds that come in to visit the native plants.”

But Gordon’s passions don’t end there. Beyond the garden’s borders lies his treasured man-cave, a sanctuary where sports and camaraderie converge,

with the Bombers’ games taking centre stage.

Yet, surrounding the excitement of sports, it’s evident that Gordon’s heart remains firmly rooted in the garden.

“During half-time or between an innings, he’s known to steal a few moments to check on his plants,” Monique said.

“It’s his passion pit.”

Gordon said it was almost a form of meditation and one that everyone should give a go.

“Both sport and gardening go hand in hand,” he said.

“The secret to the garden, though, is water. Just like wine, it helps.”

Whether Gordon’s cheering on his team or caring for his plants his passions enrich not only his life but also the lives of those around him, creating joy, laughter, and a colourful oasis that brings warmth to their home.

Also serving as an inspiration to the many gardeners who enjoy their spaces just as much.

How to reward yourself

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO EARN THOSE EXTRA POINTS ON FLYBUYS. EVERY TIME YOU SCAN YOUR CARD AT A PARTICIPATING STORE, YOU’RE EARNING POINTS.

YOUR FIRST POINT of call is always the Flybuys app.

There, you can access your points total, your digital card, as well as all of the offers available to you to earn those extra points.

Make sure to check the offers tab in the app to find the offers and activate them before you check out.

Did you know that Flybuys has over 20 partners that you can earn points at?

Coles is just the beginning of where you can earn points. First Choice, Liquorland, Kmart and Bunnings are all places you can earn points at.

While there, look out for the signs that say bonus points on specific items. This can be an easy way to earn some extra points while getting your groceries.

Got a big family and want to earn some extra points?

Make sure to add them to your account so you can all reap the benefits.

You can have up to nine people on one account, making it that much easier to reach your point goals.

As your points start stacking up, you might be wondering what to do with them.

There’s many options for redeeming your points, with one of the most popular being redeeming for Flybuys dollars, to get you $10 off your Coles shop for 2000 points.

Another popular way to redeem your points is to transfer them to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account.

For every 1000 Flybuys points you earn, you can transfer them for 500 Velocity points.

Once you link your accounts, you can even turn on automatic transfer so your points go into your Velocity account to get you on that flight sooner.

Now, it’s time to go earn those points.

There are plenty of local stores that offer their own rewards card. Next time you stop by your local cafe for a coffee, see if they have a rewards card. Coffee spots often have stamp cards, so you can get the next free coffee after you purchase your fifth coffee.

Juice bars and nail salons also offer their own rewards systems, either with a physical card or an app system, so be sure to ask around your local spots and see what rewards they offer.

Lemon meringue pie

Method:

Set the oven to 180℃

Make the filling by mixing the cornflour, white sugar, zest, lemon juice and orange juice and water mixture. Cook over a medium heat, stirring well until thickened and smooth.

Once the mix bubbles, remove from heat and beat in butter.

Stir in eggs and return to heat.

When the mixture is thick, to a curd like texture, remove from heat.

While the curd cools down, start preparing the meringue by whisking the egg whites until they form soft peaks.

Slowly add half of the sugar, while continuing to whisk.

Whisk in the cornflour.

Whisk in the sugar.

To assemble the pie, add the curd to the base.

Add meringue from the outside of the pie, moving inwards.

Using the back of a spoon add soft peaks to the meringue by gently placing the spoon on the surface and lifting up.

Bake for 20 minutes, the meringue should have just begun to brown.

Let sit for 60 minutes before serving.

If you want to try making your own pie pastry, give it a go with this recipe.

Use the pastry to line the pie dish. Trim excess pastry.

Cover the pastry with baking paper and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.
