Our Home Spring 2024

welcome

AS WE PUT TOGETHER another jam-packed edition of Our Home, the final one for this year, I can’t help but get excited for warmer months while saying goodbye to the cooler seasons that have passed.

I’m excited to flick the switch to turn off our indoor heating and step outside to soak up the blissful sunshine once again.

Oh, and let’s not forget how refreshing it feels to open the windows in our homes, letting that fresh air back in.

There’s something truly magical about all the seasons we experience each year, but the warmer ones are by far my favourite.

It’s been a big year for the features team, as I’m sure it has been for many of you too.

So, get ready to kick off your shoes and relax with this next edition.

Like always, we have an incredible home renovation story that’s ready to be showcased, and at this time of year, we absolutely love catching up with some talented gardeners for inspiration and tips.

But this magazine offers more than just homes and gardens; it’s a complete package that encompasses so much more.

We have recipes that will inspire you to head straight to the kitchen, and we’ve reached out to professionals to uncover the latest trends in home

design, including lighting, home décor and tiles.

Have you ever wondered what the most sought-after collectors’ items are?

Or how to navigate the current cost-of-living pressures?

Well, wonder no more, and take a peep inside.

If you’re up for a challenge, I found a fantastic method to declutter your home in just 50 minutes.

I haven’t had the chance to try it myself yet, but it’s definitely on my bucket list to wrap up the year.

One article I’m particularly excited for you to read features the work of artist Tim Bowtell, whose creativity transforms homes into unimaginable works of art.

Sheds, shipping containers, fences — if you can dream it, he can do it.

And, as always, no edition is complete without family fun ideas with a list of popular board games for you to try.

This edition is packed with inspiration and practical tips to elevate your home and life.

We hope you find something that sparks joy and creativity as you dive in.

Here’s to making the most of the season ahead and to ending 2024 on a high note.

Enjoy, until next time, Kelly Carmody and the Our Home team.

A beloved sanctuary

A VIBRANT GARDEN TRANSFORMED BY LOVE AND DEDICATION STANDS AS A LANDMARK FOR THE COMMUNITY.

IF YOU’VE EVER driven between Mooroopna and Old Toolamba, you might have noticed the vibrant flower garden at the intersection of Mooroopna Murchison Rd and Rushworth Rd.

The eye-catching red cottage serves as a delightful centrepiece, and over the years, owners Ray and Judy Luscombe have learnt their colourful garden has become a beloved reference point for locals.

However, this gorgeous garden is more than just a corner plot; for the past two decades, it has been a labour of love and a gathering place for family.

A place where children and grandchildren have laughed and played and where flowers bloom and blossom in abundance, and remarkably, much of this vibrant display originated from single cuttings.

“We were dairy farmers in Toolamba for many years, and when we considered retirement, we thought about building a house on this land, but then decided to move to Shepparton instead,” Judy said.

“After settling in Shepparton, I envisioned creating a colourful garden filled with all the colours of the rainbow. Blue, purple, yellow, orange, red, pink and green.

“We had a dam dug, purchased a windmill, and then I began designing garden beds and planting, mostly from cuttings.”

While planting, the couple discovered many original bricks on the site.

After some investigation, they learnt that the land once served as a hotel and store, where fine wines, spirits, and apparently ales of the best quality were always on hand.

“We found some information in the Old Toolamba Times, which was printed before Shepparton papers,” Ray said.

“They provided accommodation for travellers and stocked an extensive range of groceries.

“It was called Con. Ryan’s Hotel and Store.”

Over the years, this property has transformed into a wondrous garden, bringing Judy and Ray’s visions to life.

Native trees and plants have enriched the garden oasis, complemented by charming ornaments and a delightful little red cottage built by their son.

“Our son took a course on building small houses from old farm trailers, and one Christmas, he made me a little red schoolhouse,” Judy said.

“Yes, we had a dairy farm that Ray ran, but I was actually a school teacher, so it meant a lot to me.

“It was painted red, and it has a little stove and sink, and it instantly became the perfect spot for afternoon teas with family and friends.”

Judy and Ray’s land, vibrant and thriving, reflects both their journeys and their connection to what was once a vacant plot.

Today, it’s a living canvas, showcasing the dedication and creativity they’ve poured into it over the years.

Each flower and plant tells a story, serving as a backdrop for family gatherings and cherished moments.

And as locals pass by, the garden stands as a lasting symbol of community spirit and resilience — a beautiful testament to the couple’s shared vision and the joy that comes from nurturing nature and relationships.

“Coming here has always brought us so much joy, and watching it grow over the years has been truly special,” Judy said.

“I think Ray enjoys riding the mower; it might remind him a bit of the farm work he once did.

“I hope everyone who drives past appreciates what we’ve created and continues to enjoy it for years to come.

“Each season brings different colours and meaning, and although we’re getting a bit older and can’t get out as much as we’d like, every time we open the gate and drive in, it still feels like our home away from home and our a lovely garden sanctuary.”

Hacking everyday life

READY TO HACK IT?

OUR LIST OF KITCHEN HACKS WILL HELP MAKE COOKING AND CLEANING EASIER, AND WILL HELP YOU GET THE MOST OF YOUR GROCERIES.

SHREDDING CHICKEN

Sick of shredding chicken with forks or your hands? Use a hand mixer to shred it in seconds.

REHEATING PIZZA

Never eat soggy leftover pizza again by reheating your pizza in a pan. Just add a couple of drops of water and add the lid for a crispy crust and gooey cheese.

EASY BLENDER CLEANING

MAKE YOUR ICE COFFEES LAST LONGER

Brew some coffee and freeze it in ice cube trays and add to your iced coffees to avoid that watered-down taste.

REVIVE STALE BREAD

Lightly wet your bread and pop it into the oven at 180℃ for a few minutes to bring it back to life.

KEEP HERBS FRESH LONGER

Add some warm water and dish soap to your dirty blender and blend for 30 seconds for mess-free cleaning.

KEEPING BROWN SUGAR SOFT

Add a slice of bread to your brown sugar container to prevent it from hardening.

REMOVE EGGSHELL EASILY

Eggshell stuck in your egg? Use the rest of the shell to easily fish out the shell without creating more dishes.

Store bouquets of fresh herbs like coriander or parsley in a glass of water, and covered loosely with a plastic bag in the fridge, to keep them fresh for weeks.

FRESHER LETTUCE

Store your lettuce in a container lined with damp paper towel to prevent it from wilting.

VACUUM YOUR CUPBOARDS

Use your vacuum to clean out cabinets instead of using a cloth, to pick up crumbs. Try using the vacuum brush attachment to suck them up instead. This works well on pantry shelves too.

Tile trends

LET’S FIND OUT WHAT’S TRENDING IN THE TILE WORLD AT NATIONAL TILES, SHEPPARTON.

Reminiscent of centuries-old and time-worn marble, the Gioa Bianco series evokes a classic luxury without being ostentatious. Boasting a unique matt finish with a satin antique effect that’s irresistible to the touch, Gioa Bianco reinterprets classic white marble in a coordinated floor and wall collection. With nuanced grey veining scattered over a deep white base, Goia Bianco will create stunning interiors with a simultaneous contemporary grandeur and vintage allure.

Drawing influence from traditional ceramics and contemporary aesthetics, the Materia series focuses on colour, light and pattern. Boasting 10 different colours in rectangle format and five in rhombus, the Materia series encourages creative colour play.

Travertine tiles have been used since the earliest structures were built. An extremely versatile and naturally beautiful stone, Travertine features subtle hues and organic textures that exude warmth and classical sophistication.

Capturing the natural beauty of the iconic Ceppo di Gre stone, the porcelain Norr 2.0 series expertly recreates the irregular textures and tonal contrasts that Ceppo is so prized for. With a myriad of greys stacked tone upon tone, Norr 2.0 artfully embellishes the Ceppo design, incorporating a mix of large and fine grain pebbles for a distinctive and harmonious effect. Available in three different colourways from light to dark, Norr 2.0 will coordinate with a range of colour schemes as either a base or accent, while its natural and structured finishes make it the ideal solution for indoors and out.

Daisy magic blooms

DISCOVER FUN AND INVENTIVE WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR GARDEN WITH THESE CLEVER DAISY-THEMED HACKS THAT ADD BEAUTY AND CHARM TO YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE.

PROPAGATE DAISIES USING A DIY FLOWER “BOUQUET”

Instead of buying new plants, you can propagate daisies from existing ones.

Trim off healthy daisy stems and group them like a bouquet.

Remove the lower leaves, place the stems in water, and once roots begin to form, plant them directly into soil. You’ll have new daisy plants ready to bloom.

EGGSHELL PLANTERS FOR DAISIES

Use eggshells as tiny, biodegradable planters for daisy seedlings.

Crack the top of the eggs, empty them, and fill the shells with potting soil.

Plant daisy seeds in the eggshells, and once they sprout, plant the entire eggshell in your garden.

The eggshells will decompose, adding calcium to the soil.

CREATE A DAISY LAWN

If you love daisies, consider replacing patches of grass with daisy plants. These charming flowers will spread over time, creating a meadow-like lawn that requires less maintenance than grass. It’s great for adding a wild, natural look to your garden.

MAKE DAISY CHAINS FOR MULCHING

Instead of using typical mulch, try making decorative daisy “chains’’ by placing cut flowers or spent daisies around the base of your plants.

Not only does it look whimsical, but as the flowers break down, they add organic material to the soil and help retain moisture.

DAISY PETAL NATURAL INDICATOR FOR SOIL HEALTH

Daisies can be used as a natural indicator of your garden’s soil health. They thrive best in welldrained, slightly acidic soil.

If you notice your daisies turning yellow or struggling, it may be time to test the pH and drainage of your garden bed.

GROW DAISIES IN CONTAINERS FOR EASY RELOCATION

Daisies grow beautifully in pots or containers, making it easy to relocate them around your garden. Use this hack to fill bare spots or enhance certain areas with colour.

Plus, container-grown daisies can be brought indoors for sunny window spots or patios.

ATTRACT POLLINATORS WITH MIXED

DAISY BEDS

Plant different varieties of daisies together to

create a vibrant patch that attracts butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Daisies’ open-faced blooms are perfect for welcoming beneficial insects to your garden.

DAISY PETAL PATHWAY

Create a unique garden path by planting daisy clusters along the sides of walkways.

This natural border will add a charming, whimsical look to your garden, especially as the flowers sway in the breeze. You can also scatter some petals along the path for a more magical feel.

Home grown harvest exchange

WITH THE AIM OF STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, ENHANCING RESILIENCE, AND DEMONSTRATING THE VIABILITY OF A LOCAL FOOD SWAP SYSTEM, GARDENER AND VOLUNTEER MEG PETHYBRIDGE, ALONG WITH LIKE-MINDED FRIENDS, FOUNDED ALTERNATIVE LIVING GATHERINGS.

STORY: KELLY CARMODY

“MY PARTNER AND I cultivated a small suburban garden, which sparked numerous conversations with friends and colleagues interested in growing their own food,” Meg said.

“Many expressed a desire to learn more about sustainable living and to share their abundance of seeds, plants, and produce, especially as interest rates and inflation rose.”

Among those interested were friends Matt and Daina, who run the Shepparton Brewery.

After a series of discussions, the group decided that hosting an event would be a perfect way for local gardeners to connect and for newcomers to learn how to start their own gardens.

The first gathering at Shepparton Brewery was a resounding success.

“Our gatherings have doubled in size, from an average of 20 to 40 participants, and our Facebook group, Goulburn Valley Permaculture, has grown to over 100 members,” she said.

“Each gathering features a guest speaker focusing on gardening, homesteading, or permaculture, alongside a swap table filled with produce, preserves, seeds, and plants. Guest speakers also have the opportunity to sell their goods.”

Leftover produce from these gatherings is kindly donated to Shepparton FoodShare, while plants and seedlings are given to community gardens, reinforcing the spirit of sharing and sustainability.

On the group’s Facebook page, members actively share ideas and discuss gardening and related topics.

“A new member who has never managed to keep a plant alive was inspired to grow herbs by the gentle encouragement of experienced gardeners in the group,” Meg said.

“There’s certainly momentum building.

“I love the food swap, it’s so interesting to try new vegie varieties that someone has lovingly grown in their home garden.

“One member always has avocados to swap. The jams, sauces, relishes and chutneys have become a hot competition, with members taste testing each other’spreserves and swapping recipes.”

The gatherings are organised seasonally, with the next one scheduled for late January.

Keep an eye on the Shepparton Brewery’s social media pages for the date.

“Together, these gatherings not only foster a love for gardening, but also create lasting friendships and a supportive community,” Meg said.

“We’re really lucky to live in a region with so much connection and community.

“Everyone should get involved and be a part of the sharing.”

Declutter 50 things in 50 minutes

LET’S BE HONEST: CLUTTER HAS A SNEAKY WAY OF PILING UP BEFORE YOU EVEN NOTICE. AND WITHOUT A SOLID, ORGANISED SYSTEM, IT CAN QUICKLY SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL.

BUT HERE’S THE good news — there’s a simple and effective solution that’s as straightforward as it sounds: The 50 things in 50 minutes challenge.

READY TO DECLUTTER? LET’S GO!

The idea is simple; in just 50 minutes, you’ll find and toss 50 items that no longer serve a purpose in your life.

While throwing out 50 things might seem daunting at first, it’s easier than you think.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN:

Start small: Do you have a jar overflowing with pens? Get rid of a couple that don’t work.

Outdated medicine: Check your medicine cabinet for expired medications and dispose of them properly.

Socks and paperwork: Sort through your sock drawer and toss out the lonely, mismatched ones. Got a pile of old bills? Shred them.

Wardrobe overhaul: If you have clothes that don’t fit or haven’t been worn in years, let them go.

Toys and gadgets: Broken toys, outdated chargers, or unused kitchen gadgets — time to say goodbye.

Linen and towels: Old, frayed towels or bed linens? If they’ve lost their fluff, it’s time to let them go.

Craft supplies: Dried-out Play-Doh or unused craft materials are just taking up space.

Make it fun: Set a timer for 50 minutes, clear a space where you can pile up the items, and get ready to declutter.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time.

And don’t worry — if something is still usable, consider donating it to someone in need.

Repeat for success: To maintain a clutter-free home, repeat this challenge every few weeks.

By setting good boundaries and regularly clearing out the excess, you’ll create a more organised and peaceful living space.

So, what are you waiting for?

Set that timer, and let the decluttering begin!

Good luck.

A love for the extraordinary

RACHEAL PEGG’S UNIQUE PET SANCTUARY HAS ALWAYS BEEN ENCHANTED BY QUIRKY AND FUN ANIMALS SINCE CHILDHOOD.

HOWEVER, HER LOVE for wildlife has blossomed over the years and has led her to create an eclectic collection of pets that now almost resembles a mini fauna park.

“I remember growing up and having pet chickens and ducks like we never had cats and dogs,” Racheal said.

“It was always something unique, a little bit different.”

Alongside, birds, guinea pigs, bearded dragons, blue tongue lizards, Racheal’s latest additions to her pet family are Rocky, Deja, and Polly — three adorable squirrel gliders that are as captivating as they are cute.

These charming marsupials, native to Australia, are known for their remarkable gliding abilities, allowing them to soar gracefully from branch to branch in their enclosure.

Racheal delights in observing their antics as they explore their surroundings and interact with one another, especially at night.

“I like unique animals and things that are a little bit different, and they’re certainly different,” Racheal said as she smiled.

“A friend of mine had one, and I thought, yep, I need to get one of them too, and now I’ve got three.

“There are two females who are about two years old, and the male has just turned one.

“Being nocturnal they sleep all day, and then they come out at night to feed all the little bugs, moths, and spiders … they have excellent night vision, which helps them navigate and find food in the dark, and they’re very active. It’s entertaining to watch.”

Squirrel gliders have a soft, greyish-brown fur coat with a creamy white underbelly.

They have large, expressive eyes and a long, bushy tail that helps with balance and steering while gliding.

They possess a membrane called the patagium that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, allowing them to glide gracefully between trees.

Furthermore, they can cover distances of up to 50 metres in a single glide.

However, inside their enclosure they’re limited to space, but it does not stop them from gliding from one side to the other and quickly.

“They’ll, come right up on one side of the enclosure, and they’ll jump right to the back the other side,” she said.

“They’re acrobatic.”

Adult squirrel gliders typically weigh between 300 to 600 grams and measure about 24 to 30cm in body length, not including the tail, which is about the same length.

“Mine won’t grow any more now,” Racheal said.

“Their lifespan isn’t that long either, sadly … they live in captivity six to eight years and out in the wild, they only live three or four.”

Squirrel gliders are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and urban development, and conservation efforts are under way to protect their habitats.

They are an extremely unique pet, and you need a special licence to acquire one.

“They are at risk of humans cutting down their trees and things like owls and dogs and cats attacking them,” she said.

“Campaspe Squirrel Gliders on Facebook often rehabilitate them and try to get them back out into the wild.

“If anyone wants additional information on how they can help, adopt or foster, they are the group to contact.

“They’re such beautiful little creatures … I’m looking forward to seeing if mine start a family now that the male is old enough.”

Light it up: What’s hot

LIGHTING TRENDS CONTINUE TO ELEVATE THE AESTHETICS OF INTERIOR SPACES, TRANSFORMING FUNCTIONAL FIXTURES INTO STRIKING WORKS OF ART.

LIGHTS PLUS’ LATEST PRODUCT launches embody these emerging trends, offering sophisticated designs that are not only practical, but also add flair and personality to any room.

STATEMENT FIXTURES: MAKING BOLD IMPRESSIONS

One of the biggest lighting trends is the rise of statement fixtures.

These pieces are more than just sources of light — they are eye-catching elements that redefine the atmosphere of a room.

The Orilla pendant perfectly exemplifies this trend.

Its sleek, minimalist design features a wide, flat disk that seamlessly combines simplicity with boldness. Similarly, the Torso collection showcases how lighting can double as art.

Its cluster of hanging glass shades in soft, jewel-like tones —amber, clear, and grey — creates a cascading effect that adds depth and drama to a room.

The combination of intricate glass textures and the warmth of brushed brass fittings offers a sophisticated blend of vintage charm and contemporary design.

TEXTURE TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT

In addition to bold, artistic designs and textures are playing an increasingly important role in lighting fixtures.

Designers are exploring the tactile and visual appeal of texture, and this focus on materiality allows lighting to contribute to the sensory experience of a space.

The Malin pendant takes a unique approach with its felt fabric shade.

The Malin pendant.
The Orilla pendant.

The colour palettes exude a calming, organic vibe, while the texture of the felt brings a soft, inviting warmth to any room.

This use of fabric showcases how non-traditional materials are becoming popular in lighting design.

FROSTED FINISH

The Patino pendant embraces frosted glass with a soft, matte finish.

The subtle texture of the frosted glass creates a beautiful diffused glow, perfect for adding mood lighting to any space.

ON-TREND COLOURS FOR TODAY’S INTERIORS

Lights Plus’ new collection incorporates a wide range of colour options, with natural and earthy tones taking centre stage.

From the calming green of the Patino pendant to the neutral tones of the Malin pendant, these colours reflect a growing desire for interior spaces that feel connected to nature.

The combination of these organic shades with textured materials, like glass and fabric, creates a harmonious balance between form and function.

Board games build bonds

HOW

FAMILY FUN CAN STRENGTHEN BONDS AND BOOST WELLBEING.

GATHERING AROUND THE board game table isn’t just fun — it’s a powerful way to enhance family connections and improve mental health.

Studies show that playing board games together can strengthen relationships, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive skills, making game nights a valuable addition to family life.

One shop who knows this all too well is the recently opened board game shop in Shepparton, called Little Plastic Fellas.

Little Plastic Fellas is a family-owned board game shop with deep roots in Shepparton’s growing community of board game enthusiasts.

What began as a passion project in their home in 2019 has blossomed into a business dedicated to creating fun, screen-free social experiences for fami-

lies, friends, and anyone curious about the world of modern board games.

Founded by Dave Barlow and wife Nyree Curnow, they have teamed up with Quinton and Michelle Sung to combine their expertise and passion to take the business to the next level.

Together, they aim to offer something they wished they had growing up: a welcoming, friendly board game shop where people can explore, connect, and discover games that suit all ages and preferences.

Located in the bustling Star Bowl Arcade on Fryers St, Shepparton, their shop offers a curated collection of around 400 unique games, with plans to expand to over 600 as they grow.

This will be a space for everyone, from families looking for screen-free social fun to experienced

gamers who want to dive into strategic, thematic or cooperative games.

Little Plastic Fellas has always been about community.

Over the years, they’ve hosted pop-up shops, such as at ShepparCon — Shepparton’s annual three-day cosy board gaming convention that has run since 2017 — and community events, like the GV Board Game Days, where families, kids, and adults gather to play and discover new games.

They plan to continue hosting smaller, more focused events at the new store, and are excited to have a space where gamers can come together, share their passion and have fun.

Little Plastic Fellas is worth checking out, but for now, they have provided us with a game list they feel everyone should have a read of, and it’s right here in this edition of Our Home

Four decades of transformation

REVIVING A HISTORIC HOME IN VICTORIA’S COUNTRYSIDE.

IN THE HEART OF Victoria’s countryside lies a remarkable story of love, perseverance, and the rich history of a home that has stood the test of time.

Sue and Doug Brown have called this property home for over four decades, transforming it from a derelict hotel and general store into a warm family haven.

The story begins with Michael Kearney, who, in 1871, recognised the potential of the land as a vital stopping point between Bendigo and the Beechworth Goldfields.

According to Doug, Michael Carney then built the hotel and general store on this land that served travellers until it was closed in 1928.

“This place has seen so much history,” Doug said.

“We were excited to find that a box of old dockets and papers had been found in the roof.

“This gave us an insight and first hand connection to the daily life in the 1870s.”

In 1980, Doug and Sue took a leap of faith and moved into the ageing structure after inheriting it from Doug’s great uncle, Robert Brown, who was a bachelor.

Their vision was to breathe new life into the property, which had long been neglected.

“When we started it, it was a shadow of its former self, but we saw the potential,” Sue said.

“It is one of the few, and possibly only, buildings of its type left in the municipality, in that it fronts the main road so is highly visible to the public.

“Located close to the Catholic church (now privately owned), these two buildings are all that remain of what was the bustling township of Moorilim or Muddy Creek as it was originally known.”

“We didn’t know what we were getting into,” Doug said.

“But we were young and ready to take on the world.

“Uncle Bob was a bachelor and lived in the old hotel with his housekeeper. The conditions were very basic by today’s standards, but it was the ’50s and ’60s they were not used to modern luxuries.

“One of family stories is around when electricity became available, the family were not able to convince Uncle Bob to have an electric light in the bathroom. Why on earth would you need to be in there in the dark.”

Sue and Doug’s initial challenges included limited resources and an extensive renovation plan.

Sue said they had to start from scratch. At times it was overwhelming, but they were committed.

During the early years, while renovations took place, they lived with minimal amenities and used a caravan as a makeshift kitchen.

“It was a labour of love,” Sue said.

“It feels like we have always been renovating, and as our family grew, so did our commitment to making it a home.”

The couple made significant updates, turning the once dark and uninviting spaces into a bright, functional family home, with their kids getting involved at times too.

However, it was three years ago when they decided to bring in architect Edwina Thompson from About Architecture in Euroa, who was recommended by their children, to complete their dreams for their home.

“She walked around, and she looked, and she asked lots of questions, and she talked to us about our plans, and then she did up some mud maps basically,” Doug said.

“And it all just went from there; it’s what we needed really.”

Edwina’s designs inspired the couple to expand their vision, and they ended up with exactly what she suggested.

Both Sue and Doug revealed that their plans had evolved significantly from their original ideas, and what began as a simple renovation, turned into a much larger project than they anticipated.

“It was probably three times what we thought it would be and three times as much,” Sue said.

“But it was all worth it, and we are so happy with the results.

“Edwina did a wonderful job connecting the home together and creating a new bathroom and areas that allow a lot of natural light into our home.

“I think the open-plan kitchen and dining area are our favourite spots, but we also love being outside.”

Sue and Doug’s home has had a remarkable makeover in the past 40 years, and as the couple look to the future, with renovations complete, their focus is on spending more time in their beloved home.

“Just being able to have more time here and enjoy it all now will be lovely,” Sue said.

“We love having everyone here for the holidays; it’s a space where memories are made and cherished.”

Reflecting on their journey, Doug said how special it was to have built a home and raised a family in one place.

But the pair did have advice for those considering a similar renovation project.

“Don’t do it all at once. Take your time to think about what you really want,” Sue said.

“Our likes and dislikes have changed considerably over the years. We have probably renovated some spaces twice and made lots of mistakes.

“It’s important to live in the space to understand its needs before making changes.”

“Enjoy the ride,” Doug added, recalling all the late nights they spent working on their home together.

Pre-purchase pest inspections a must

DAMIAN DOLLER FROM PESTOLOGY SHARES EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BOOKING A PEST INSPECTION BEFORE PURCHASING A HOME.

WHEN PURCHASING A HOME, there are many things you will need to consider.

An important consideration is assessing your future home’s condition and safeguarding against potential pest risks.

Damian Doller from Pestology offers Pre Purchase Timber Pest Inspections for customers looking to purchase a new house or for anyone looking to make sure their home is free of timber pests.

We asked him everything you have to know before booking an inspection.

What areas of the property does the inspection cover?

The inspections are on a case-by-case basis.

The standard inspection is based on a roof void inspection, an internal wall inspection and if the house is built on stumps, a subfloor inspection.

If a customer has any specific concerns such as large trees, potential damp areas or old termite damage, this is something we can also focus on during the inspection.

What pests do you check for?

Timber pests including termites and borers and wood decay fungi.

What common pests are found in inspections?

Unfortunately, termites are quite common and sometimes timber borers.

How do you detect pests that might not be visible?

Using a variety of detection devices such as moisture meters, thermal cameras and radar units that detect pest movement within the walls.

How long does the inspection take?

Around two hours for a normal-sized family home.

Damian Doller conducting a pest inspection.
Damian Doller is ready to help you with all your pest related needs.

Are there homes that are more at risk of pests?

Unfortunately, yes. Houses that have issues such as broken pipes, poor drainage or large trees nearby are more susceptible to termite attack.

Even steel frame homes aren’t safe from termites ‒ termites will seek out timber fixings such as architraves, skirting boards and cabinetry.

What can homeowners expect after the inspection is finished?

After the inspection, I ring the customer to discuss my findings and explain any potential issues. This is followed up by a comprehensive report that details the findings and any potential issues that could conceal or encourage termite attack.

Why is it essential to get a pest inspection before purchasing a home?

It’s always better to know if termites are present or if the house is at risk before you go into negotiations. The outcome of a report can be used to negotiate a better outcome for the purchaser.

What are the risks of not getting a pest inspection before purchasing a home?

The number one risk is the presence of live termites. Termites can cause extensive damage in a short space of time. This damage can be expensive to fix and can also be dangerous to anyone living in the house.

What are the risks of pest infestations if they are not treated?

If left untreated, termites can virtually destroy a home. As most insurers won’t cover termite attack, it’s best to identify them before they cause major damage.

What is your follow-up process if pests are found in an inspection?

If pests are identified during an inspection, a treatment proposal will be forwarded to the customer for consideration. If possible, we will try to offer multiple treatment options, so the customer can choose an option that suits their needs.

NOW IS THE TIME TO BUILD!

There’s no doubt that the current economic outlook is now stable & if you were on the fence on whether to build, now is the time to act!

Building costs have now eased after prices skyrocketed over the previous few years, with builders now offering incentives & quicker start times. The COVID-19 block boom is over, the last 12 months we have seen an influx of resale & developer blocks come on the market which has created an oversupply. This oversupply has given buyers greater choice and the opportunity to negotiate a fairer price for land, offsetting the increased

There’s no doubt that the current economic outlook is a little gloomy, but there is a silver lining. Building costs in the past few years have skyrocketed to all-time new levels across the Goulburn Valley. The high costs are driven by an overwhelming backlog of building contracts throughout the region, with most builders having 12 months of work ahead of them to catch up. Notwithstanding this, the future for block investment and residential building looks bright. The COVID-19 block boom is now largely over, the boom that was driven by the high cost of living, that saw seeing inflation and interest rates rise rapidly, and resulted in spiking block prices. Block prices are beginning to stabilise, with many re-sale lots coming back on the market – giving buyers

greater choice and the opportunity to negotiate a fair price, helping to offset the rise in building costs. The next 12 months should give those wanting to build more opportunity to negotiate price with builders. Those looking to build in the next couple of years should take the opportunity to secure a block now as there will be a lack of new development estates and land available over the next few years. It’s also important to keep in mind that developers have paid today’s market price for Englobo (undeveloped) land to develop, and the high cost of developing estates will make it difficult to sell blocks in the future for less than an average of $300,000, depending on size and location.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY

From dream to reality

IMAGINE STEPPING INTO A BACKYARD THAT INSTANTLY TRANSPORTS YOU TO

A

SERENE OASIS, WHERE SHIMMERING WATERS INVITE YOU TO RELAX, PLAY AND ENTERTAIN.

FOR MOOROOPNA RESIDENT Brenda Pryor, this dream has become a reality.

After years of envisioning a modern pool with a spa, she finally took the plunge, transforming her space after removing an old pool that was damaged and could not be fixed.

Brenda’s backyard now boasts the impressive Absolute model, complete with a range of features designed for both fun and safety, and that’s all thanks to the work of GV Unique Leisure Pools and GV Unique Outdoors & Landscaping.

“I wanted something that was going to be safe for my grandkids, and this design ticked all the boxes,” she said.

“The chic, all-inclusive setup features a built-in spillover spa, a splash deck, a gradually sloping pool floor, and a deep-end swim-out bench.

“I went with the silver-grey colour, and I chose to finish around the pool with travertine tiles.

“I also added a heat pump and a solar blanket, which I had installed below ground. It’s one of the best system inventions I’ve ever seen.”

With two grandkids, aged five and seven, safety was a top priority.

“The pool features a safety ledge all the way around, that makes it safer for them to play,” Brenda said.

“It’s a lot safer for them, and I can sit on the splash deck while keeping an eye on them.”

Brenda’s choice of a pool with a water feature was an easy decision, and the installation process was impressively swift.

“I thought it would take 12 months, but I contacted them in January, and it was completed by May,” she said.

“The whole process was great. I didn’t have to worry about anything.

“They organised everything, and even when I changed my mind a couple of times, it was no problem. I just told them what I wanted, and they took care of it.”

Her backyard transformation is impressive. Before, according to Brenda, it was pretty ugly with an old pool and stairs leading to a loft.

However, now, it’s a beautifully landscaped area with a neat, modern and functional layout.

The new outdoor area features a stunning timber roof that adds a modern touch while providing shade, warmth and comfort.

Brenda also incorporated roller remote blinds, making the space even more versatile.

“These blinds allow us to control the light and privacy effortlessly,” she said.

“On hot days, we can easily pull them down to create a cooler environment, and they’re perfect for entertaining in the evenings and also great in the winter keeping it warm.

“I spend a lot of time outside, so this space is perfect.”

GV Unique Leisure Pools operations manager Shannon Hill highlighted the growing interest in home upgrades.

“We’ve noticed a significant influx of clients wanting to improve their backyards and add pools in, especially as life settles down after the pandemic,” Shannon said.

“People appreciate not having to co-ordinate multiple trades; they want convenience, and with our streamlined process, we handle everything — from permits to installation. If any issues arise, we’re quick to address them.”

Brenda echoed this sentiment.

“Having everything organised by one company was a huge relief,” she said.

“I just wanted a beautiful space, and they made it happen without the stress.”

Reflecting on her nearly 14 years in her home, Brenda expressed how much her outdoor space has evolved.

“This area is so much more enjoyable now that I have a beautiful pool and entertaining space,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to summer and making more memories out here with the grandkids.

“They absolutely love the pool and can’t wait to swim. It’s their favourite spot. I can see them using it for years to come,” she added with a smile.

For anyone considering a similar backyard transformation, Brenda highly recommended working with professionals who can streamline the process.

“It’s a one-stop shop for GV Unique Leisure Pools, and they have done a wonderful job,” Brenda said.

“They handle everything, and you can trust them to get the job done right.”

Brenda’s backyard is not just a pool; it’s a vibrant gathering space that enhances her family’s lifestyle, creating cherished moments for years to come — it’s her backyard oasis.

If you’re thinking about a backyard upgrade, perhaps it’s time to take that plunge, too.

“You won’t regret it, this area is now my favourite part of my whole home.”

Avoiding cost of living pressures

COST OF LIVING PRESSURES HAVE HIT EVERYONE HARD ACROSS THE BOARD.

BUDGETS ARE BECOMING tighter, interest rates are going up and so are prices.

GV Finance Brokers’ Simon Quattrocchi shares everything you need to know about how to alleviate those cost of living worries, and what he recommends for first time homeowners and current homeowners.

What do you recommend for people to help alleviate cost of living pressures?

The cost of living has been affecting all Australians hard. With costs going up, it can be difficult to control your budget and keep your spending low.

Simon said there were many things you could review in your finances to ensure your spending is where it should be.

“Always review your utilities every year to check to see if there’s better deals out there. Review your insurance (as well),” Simon said.

“It’s a good thing to pull your bank statements out for the last three months and individually check every transaction you’ve made to get an idea of where you’re spending your money.

“You may have direct debits in there, a gym membership you’re not using any more, and all of a sudden, you might find there’s $150 to $200 a month

that’s just gone, that’s been wasted.”

Simon recommends reviewing your bank statements at least once every three months, and highlighting payments that you are okay, and you need to keep in green, payments that you should review and see if you can find a cheaper rate in yellow, and unnecessary payments you should cancel in red.

“You will find that statements are by far one of the best tools to help with your budgeting because that tells you exactly where you’re spending your money,” Simon said.

“Unfortunately, you might have already trimmed it back as much as you can, and that’s why there are a lot of people looking for assistance.”

What do you recommend for people looking to purchase their first home?

Whether you’re looking to buy by yourself or with a partner, there are lots you need to do to prepare for the big purchase of your first home.

“Keep the savings going because that’s going to be fundamentally to important towards actually completing the purchase,” Simon said.

“Really hone in on your budgeting. Start understanding you’re going to have rates, you’re going to have insurances, you’re going to have some external

costs to the purchase of your home.”

Simon recommends paying off any debt you have, including any buy now, pay later services, car loans and credit cards.

“Debt does hurt when it comes to borrowing power, so as a first-time buyer, get your budgeting under control and your savings, and try not to get yourself into debt,” he said.

Simon said that now was the right time to start those savings and get into the housing market, especially with the First Home Guarantee making it so you only need a minimum five per cent deposit.

“I know to save is certainly challenging, but if you can get your five per cent plus cover your small amount of costs, you do have a good opportunity to get into a home with the guarantee,” he said.

“You get up to $600,000 with the home guarantee scheme in regional areas, so I’d certainly be trying to take advantage of that.”

What would you recommend for someone considering refinancing their home?

Simon said there were a couple of things you could do and GV Finance Brokers could do for you before you need to consider refinancing a mortgage to get the rates down.

“Banks have been good and bad at renegotiating interest rates, it has been difficult to determine their discounting” he said.

“We try to review clients every year, and we do actually go into our systems and try to automatically get a client a cheaper rate without having to refinance them.

“Sometimes we’re successful, sometimes we’re not.”

For homeowners who are struggling with multiple repayments, there are options that you can look into.

“One (option) is to lower the interest rate. The sad thing with that is (homeowners) are wanting to get back into a 30-year term to get the repayment down as well,” Simon said.

“So that’s a little bit of negative in the sense that you have just dragged your home loan out a little bit longer, but people looking to do that is purely from the cost of living, that is eating too much into the everyday living budget.

“The other option is debt consolidation, if you have built up equity in your home, this may help you. With drastic interest rate rises on home loans, you may have a car loan and two credit cards, they become too much for you to handle.

It could also be because cost of living has just increased so much, or you’ve got dependants, and it’s now becoming a bit too much pressure, so putting them into one cheaper bundle can certainly make life a lot better.”

GV Finance Brokers can help you consolidate your debt by combining your repayments into one bundle.

“We just work out what equity you have available in your property, so as long as you’ve got the equity, we usually recommend up to 80 per cent to avoid mortgage insurance,” Simon said.

“I enjoy working with people to bring their ideas into reality and create something to tell their story.”

Behind many artist’s work, there is often a compelling story, and whether it’s his own or someone else’s, Tim thoroughly enjoys building a narrative into his work.

A beautiful example was a mural he completed for the Benalla Street Art festival.

STORY: KELLY CARMODY

“I had purchased an old, beat-up pedal car and while driving home one day I was reminiscing about ‘simpler’ times as kids and this spawned a mural idea,” he said.

“I wanted to portray a message of simple fun, ‘the good old days’, so I used the peddle car, my grandchildren, a family member’s dog, and my property to represent my idea.

“When the painting was complete, people were remarking the image was ‘pure joy’.”

Pure joy indeed, akin to all his remarkable work spanning both oil paints and the intricate detail he now achieves using spray cans.

Tim’s journey in the artistic world is one that will remain for generations to view for years to come.

And if you want some of that Tim Bowtell magic on your own property, well, it’s as simple as reaching out to him with an idea.

So, take a look around — what spaces could be transformed?

With Tim’s vision, beside your idea, your dream of a beautifully adorned property is just a step away from reality.

Nursery ideas for boys

CREATING A NURTURING SPACE FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE CAN BE FUN AND FULFILLING, WITH ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES FOR THEMES, COLOURS, AND DÉCOR THAT REFLECT YOUR STYLE, WHILE KEEPING COMFORT IN MIND.

HOWEVER, WITH SO many girls’ options available, the Our Home team decided to reach out to Sabac on High ownerTracy Hayward for some inspiration.

What’s trending? What are some themes people can look into?

And how can we create a space that’s not only functional but has beautiful styling to match?

“Currently, we have a beautiful ‘Baby Africa’ themed range of prints in store, and they are just the sweetest prints and perfect for a boy’s nursery,” Tracy said.

“Purchase one or make them a set and have a feature wall in the nursery. Both ways would work, and their colours are very soft so could really suit any space.

“You can always choose décor items that can transition as a child grows, and neutral furniture works well for different themes later too.

“A soft area rug can add warmth and comfort and there are some gorgeous lamps out at the moment that are not only an eye-catching piece, but create a soothing environment for bedtime.”

Freeze 4-5 hours (or overnight) until firm. Remove from freezer 5-10 minutes before serving in scoops.

TIP

Make sure the cream is well chilled before beating to help prevent separating.
