AUTUMN 2015
Creating good vibes at home There is nothing quite like freshcut flowers to add good vibes to a living space. Our cover story is a perfect example of how extra touches, as simple as a vase of flowers or indoor plants, can impact on our sensory enjoyment of our homes. Shepparton photographer Nicole Williams’ one-bedroom apartment may be small but it’s big on style and comfort. Visitors often comment on the inner-city abode’s Scandinavian and vintage-inspired style, mood-enhancing aromas from an incense burner, and the positive affirmations which meld with the decor. We are also delighted to share design and decorating ideas from a 36 sq family home in Nagambie which was two years in the planning. Mark and Michelle Burgess have created a stunning home packed with contemporary flair. Their gorgeous open-plan home is a functional, stylish family haven which we feel privileged to share. We also look at a DIY renovation at Katandra West, beautiful gardens in Tatura and a man cave where music reigns over a beer fridge. Tallygaroopna mother and daughter Julie and Lucy Bonanno share what will be on their menu this Easter. Many of you will remember Julie from television’s the Great Australian Bake Off in 2013 and Lucy from Junior MasterChef in 2010. Whether you are building, renovating or simply want to add new life to your home decor, we hope you find inspiration from this issue. Happy homemaking!

AUTUMN 2015
Nicole regularly changes the positive affirmation on her blackboard, which she made with paint from Bunnings.
SHEPPARTON-BASED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER NICOLE WILLIAMS moved into a former beauty salon in the city’s central business district a year ago. She has since made it her own unique space with plants and beautiful flowers in pots, artwork, inspirational typography and antique wooden furniture. She said it had been, and still was, a conscious and timely process in making her humble apartment a home. “The home is one of the few places where you can truly be yourself,” Nicole said. “I wanted to make it my own. That’s why I’ve taken my time to make it my place. “I don’t want to clutter my home with things that don’t represent who I am.” It’s the last place you would expect to find between the banks, restaurants and shops. Nicole, 22, moved into the apartment with very little and has gradually bought pieces from local boutique shops and opportunity shops. “A lot of the furniture I buy is because of its character,” she said. “Little dints show the history behind it and it’s not just a piece of furniture. I like that about certain pieces.” Some things are old, but some things are new. Nicole admitted her expensive taste while pointing to her favourite piece in the apartment — her first art purchase by Sydney-based artists Vicki Lee and Ted O’Donnell. “It’s a digital print of lilies,” Nicole said. “They’ve used a ridiculous amount of paint throughout the series — about 60 litres or something. It’s really amazing.” She also loves her sofa from Plush, which feels very cosy, like the rest of the space. Nicole’s visitors seem to agree. “As soon as people walk into the apartment they tell me that they feel at home,” she said.

<<< 11 “They say that they like coming over — they like the way it smells, how comfortable the couch is and how they feel at home. ”Nicole’s apartment smells of sandalwood and white sage drifting from an essence burner and it’s hard not to feel positive with the feel-good inspirational quote on the blackboard that sits on a wooden industrial trestle table and currently reads: “Be in love with your life — every minute of it” — a quote by American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac. “I change what I write on the blackboard regularly,’’ Nicole said. There’s always something interesting to read or look at including the magazines that are stacked up into piles next to each other. One stack nearly reaches Nicole’s hip (she’s quite petite). “I haven’t been able to let go of my magazines,’’ she said. “I love the look of magazines and books. I think the reason why I buy so many is because I’ve always been a dreamer and wanted to be in a magazine myself.’’ Nicole specialises in wedding and engagement photography and has resisted the idea of opening up a rather small room she keeps closed off to use as her working space. “I want to make sure I’m in an environment where I feel like I’m not going to work,’’ she said. The couch, the floor, the trestle table (and the local eateries) have all worked for her so far — but she is considering putting a desk in the main entrance because it would still be in the open space and natural light. It took Nicole nine months to get a “gigantic’’ television in her apartment (a gift from her parents). But the technology became a slight burden to her apartment’s minimalist style. “There is only one spot for the television so having to move furniture for such a thing kind of messed things around for me,’’ she said. “But it’s worked out. I haven’t had a TV for more than a year so it’s been interesting. I spend less time on social media now and I absolutely love crime shows.’’ While the decor of the apartment is unquestionably creative, Nicole has managed to keep it simple. Apart from a built-in robe, her bedroom only has a bed. But the place is still fun and youthful, just like Nicole, with splashes of colour in things like a cushion on the couch and a frame on the wall that fittingly reads “There’s no place like home’’. v

Struggling with the rising cost of your domestic and commercial power bills? Have you considered solar? Along with the benefit of massive cost savings, you can protect yourself from future rising energy costs and increase the value of your property.
CE N A N I F NS OPTIO BLE* A AVAIL
Think solar is out of reach? See what one of our clients says about their recent commercial solar install.
Andrew Westblade – Brokerhouse “After continual increases in power bills for our commercial premises in Shepparton, we approached Byers Solar for a quote to assist with the reduction of the bills using solar. Clint from Byers Solar set out a detailed quote that forecast the power we would produce through the year and the savings that would be gained. Those savings worked out very similar to our budget and finance for the cost of the equipment. We are now three months down the track and have received our first bill and were rapt to see it drop by 70% which was enough to cover our finance payments. If you want to reduce your power bill, we highly recommend Byers Solar.“
Want to experience similar savings in your home or business? Talk to our experienced team about a no obligation free quote. Locally owned and operated for over 10 years, Byers Solar, a division of Byers Electrical, can help minimise your power bills.

Relaxed family living is enjoyed by Michelle and Mark Burgess and their children Lucy and Harry in Nagambie.
MARK AND MICHELLE BURGESS’ DESIGN BRIEF for their new home in Nagambie was simple: open-plan living, and room for the family to grow. They spent two years visiting display homes and planning the build before taking their ideas to Davis Sanders Homes. The result, a stunning 36 sq home spread over two residential blocks, has evolved into the perfect retreat for the Nagambie IGA supermarket owners and their children Lucy, 14, and Harry, 12. A wide and imposing rendered front facade creates impressive street appeal and the selective use of natural stone on the portico wall and timber slat privacy screens add contrast.

<<< 22 Michelle drew on her passion for interior design and skills honed during a previous renovation project to add her signature style to the now six-year-old home. Her aim was for an uncomplicated decorating theme to ensure the home remained fresh and contemporary for years to come. Earthy tones of cool grey, soft brown and neutral cream are replicated throughout, creating synergy and flow from one area to the next. Splashes of colour are used sparingly to add interest; bright red stools liven up the kitchen while aqua is the dominant theme in the theatre room, reflected in the artwork and ornamental pieces. “Using small areas of colour means I can change things easily, by re-covering a chair or buying different accessories,” Michelle said. The selective use of different materials inside creates stand-out features. A double-sided fireplace is clad in stone and a custommade red gum timber bar is prominent in the games room. The continuation of a vaulted ceiling in the living room to the undercover alfresco area links the two zones which offer great views of the sparkling in-ground swimming pool. “We tend to use the outdoor area all the time, the kids and their friends love the pool and we have the pizza oven for winter,” Michelle said. The family is spoilt for choice when entertaining with no less than five indoor living spaces including kitchen/dining, family room, theatre room, games room and study/rumpus room.

The outdoor living area is well used year round particularly in winter when the pizza oven is popular.
<<< 25 Occupying the centre of the home, the living areas split the bedrooms; the master suite is at one end while the children’s bedrooms, bathroom and guest room have their own wing. “That was part of the design plan; when people come into our home they see the living area — while the bedrooms, which can sometimes be messy, are out of sight,” Michelle said.
Storage too was integral in maintaining order so cupboards are visible in most rooms but the usual family clutter that is evident in many homes, is not. Outside the careful planning continues. A line of Manchurian pear trees under-planted with camellias screen the backyard fence, and tropical palms, succulents and water-wise plants complete the resort-style look. v

Simply the Best:
1980S THROWBACKS FOR AUTUMN STYLE It was the era of neon spandex, playful patterns, geometric shapes, bold colours, and Tina Turner’s song Simply the Best, and it’s back. This autumn, step away from understated modern design and go back in time as you draw inspiration from the daring decor combinations of the 1980s. Dulux stylist Bree Leech said homeowners could recreate this trend in their home using simple techniques, such as selecting a wall with an interesting architectural element and creating a feature. A window ledge provides the perfect landscape for this idea. Simply highlight in a bright hue and complete the look by opting for carpet in a strong tone, such as charcoal, that offsets the coloured wall. Bree said a simple stencil could also be used to create a striking feature with large graphic shapes. “Draw them onto the wall, mask it off, then paint in colours that tie back to other elements in the room,” she said. The autumn colour palette was influenced by the Pop Art movement and will feature warm ambers, vibrant blues, sea greens and graphic monochrome patterns, according to Dulux colour and trends expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Autumn style will take its cues from design movements where form did not necessarily follow function. It allows us to reconnect with a time when there were fewer restrictions on our creativity,” Andrea said. She said a fresh splash of colour could lift the vibe in any room, and was the perfect way to bring in the new season. v

SIMPLE
Scandinavian
Pictures: Mike Baker for Brilliant Lighting.
Simple Scandinavian style is set to be the next big thing in the world of interior decor.
“Sometimes it takes on an industrial edge but the look is always clean and modern.”
The look is defined by a limited colour palette which often sticks to muted neutral and charcoal tones, or black and white with a pop of ontrend pastel colour.
She said the look could be recreated in the home by using graphic patterns in throws, cushions and artwork in simple black and white, pale timber furniture and whitewashed floors.
Unfinished timber accents, light-filled airy spaces, modern design and matt black metal are also key features. Interior designer and trend forecaster Bree Leech says it is easy to replicate the look at home. “Simple Scandi is where graphic geometry and clean lines meet organic and relaxed finishes,” Bree said.
Sheepskin or fur used as a throw, rug or cushion and simple white accessories such as jars, bottles or vases also complement the look. Where lighting is concerned, industrial pendants that encompass contemporary elements are on the money and Bree said it was best to look for graphic designs that featured facets, cubes or polygons. v
CHOOSING SHEETS FOR
a great night’s sleep At the end of a long day there is nothing more soothing than to slip into a comfortable bed made with clean, fresh sheets. There are endless options when buying beautiful bed linen: cool cotton, luxurious silk and comforting flannelette are just some of the choices you have when dressing your bed. Then there are different weaves, thread counts and fabric mixes to take into account. Our Home takes a look at some of the popular varieties.
COTTON Perhaps the most popular choice for bed sheets, cool, crisp cotton is a non-allergenic natural fibre that is soft, durable and comfortable and doesn’t irritate sensitive skin. Cotton/poly blends Blends have the advantage of staying crisp and unwrinkled; hence they stay looking fresher for longer. They don’t breathe like 100 per cent cotton so can be uncomfortable during hot and humid weather.
SILK Nothing says luxury quite like pure silk sheets. Silk is extremely soft and can be expensive to purchase. Silk requires washing on a delicate cycle with gentle detergent only.
BAMBOO A relatively new fabric to the bed-linen collection, bamboo has a feel similar to fine cotton. Bamboo fibre is advertised as being thermoregulating, which means the sheets will keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. A natural fibre, bamboo is hypoallergenic, antibacterial and antimicrobial.

AUTUMN 2015
FLANNELETTE Cotton flannelette is a traditional winter fabric that Australians opt for when the weather changes in late autumn. Flannelette is a cosy winter choice, particularly for children’s beds.
THREAD COUNT Thread count is the measurement of sheet quality and refers to the number of threads contained in a 2.5 cm square of fabric. Generally, thread counts between 200 and 400 are the best sheets for daily use while higher thread counts are considered luxury sheets. Sheets with a thread count below 200 often pill easily.
SATEEN Refers to the weave of the sheet, sateen is characterised by having more vertical threads than horizontal. Sateen can be delicate and generally doesn’t have the durability of standard weaves. They do have a shiny quality and add a touch of elegance to the bed.
EGYPTIAN COTTON Egyptian cotton sheets are made from high quality, long-fibre cotton that produces exceptionally soft, durable fabric.
PERCALE Percale can be a cotton/poly blend or 100 per cent cotton and refers to the tight weave of the fabric. Percale is soft and durable, wrinkle resistant, is of medium weight and washes very well.
ORGANIC Organic fabrics are not treated with chemicals and are ideal for those who have chemical sensitivities, or just prefer a green lifestyle. v

If you are searching for a unique, cost-effective decorating idea for your home and are keen to take action to live your best life, consider creating a vision board. Visualisation is a powerful tool, and making your own board full of images that inspire your dreams, as wild as they may be, can help you to achieve your ambitions. Harmony Place vision board workshop facilitator Cilla Saxon has years of experience working with this tool. “Creating a vision board is fun, relaxing, enlightening and even therapeutic but best of all you are consciously creating your future,” Cilla said. “By setting out your hopes, dreams and aspirations on paper you can visualise them into reality.” She said the boards could be used for particular projects or to incorporate all aspects of someone’s life, career, health, leisure, home and relationships. “I date and sign my visions boards as a contract with myself and the universe. It is interesting to see at the end of the year what has transpired,” she said. Take a look online and you will find plenty of inspiration to kick-start your creativity. Simply search for “positive quotes” or “inspiring imagery” and choose images and words that stand out to you. It could be a photo of a beach, a cottage in the mountains, a quote that invigorates you — anything. Then simply print the images out. If you don’t have a printer at home, you could pop the files on a USB and take them to be printed at an office store or the local library. You can also cut out images that catch your eye in magazines, but
ensure you have a good selection of magazines to choose from such as health, travel, fashion — or you may be limited for choice. The next step is to play around with the arrangement of the images on the vision board, and pin them on. Place the board in a spot where you will see it regularly, it could in your bedroom so it is the first thing you see when you wake up. The idea behind the vision board is to add clarity to your desires. It is a form of goal setting, as the process itself may help you realise what it is you want in your life. Seeing it each day also keeps your ambitions at the forefront of your consciousness. What you hope to attract into your life may change over time, and so your vision board may evolve, and you may choose to update it. While it may sound like a load of hogwash, vision boards are recognised in psychology as a useful tool. Shepparton-based psychologist David Jones said a vision board was a tool that could be used in coaching psychology and educational psychology, and vision boards could also be helpful in treating mental illness. “People who are experiencing an ongoing depressive condition could benefit from exposure to positive imagery which could lift their mood,” David said. Vision boards are also used in the fashion world — designers have used them for many years to inspire their collections. So, what are you waiting for? I’ll leave you with one last thought to ponder as you embark on your vision board journey, a favourite quote of mine by Eleanor Roosevelt: “The future belongs to those who believe in the power of their dreams.”v

DIY MAKEOVER CAREFUL PLANNING AND A WILLINGNESS TO GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY HAS RESULTED IN A KATANDRA WEST COUPLE COMPLETING A STYLISH HOME MAKEOVER. STORY SHARON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY JULIE MERCER

WHEN RETIREES CATHY AND HEINZ van den Hurk decided to modernise their Katandra West home they used their own skills and know-how to complete the bulk of the work. Tradesmen were called in when needed but the major transformation — new flooring and a fresh coat of paint — was undertaken by the couple. The result of the three-month project is a contemporary living space featuring an on-trend colour palette of varying shades of grey. Golden bamboo flooring replaced the existing dark slate and carpet, and timber dado panelling was removed allowing the newly plastered walls to soar unencumbered to the cathedral ceilings. Heinz recalls the challenge of preparing the floor for the upgrade and the sleepless nights he spent planning to ensure every board slotted neatly in place. “I started ripping up the slate on the seventh of January, I remember it was a 40-degree day and I was using a jack hammer, it nearly killed me,” Heinz said. Five days later and the slate tiles were gone; then came the task of smoothing out the uneven surface of the concrete slab before he could lay the 105 sq m of new flooring. Cathy chose the paint colours and spent days standing on scaffolding preparing the walls and painting; a task made more difficult by having to cut-in around exposed ceiling beams. “I lost count of the metres of masking tape I used,” Cathy said.

items the couple shipped to Australia when they emigrated from The Netherlands in 1982. “We have several different types of timber, but they work,” Cathy said. An earlier renovation project saw the van den Hurks remodel their bathroom with floor-to-ceiling grey tiles, a walk-in shower, chrome tapware and gloss white vanity, creating a space worthy of a luxury hotel. According to Cathy, Heinz is a perfectionist and meticulously planned the refurbishment for several months, gaining inspiration from home shows and the internet. “Things have to be done well, otherwise I won’t bother doing it,” Heinz said. v

personalities of its owners Vince and Rhonda Vincitorio — bright, open and generous.
“We moved back with nine tandem trailer loads of plants and five trailer loads of furniture.”
Bright blooming flowers including 100 roses of every hue contrast with spacious open lawn areas that have hosted many open garden events, generously conducted by the couple to fundraise for charities.
The couple set about redesigning the garden they had established but which had been in another family’s care for more than a decade.
Vince and Rhonda developed the garden — incorporating many quirky elements — not once, but twice. “We built our home 51 years ago, ours was the first house in the street,” Vince said. “We lived here for 27 years and raised our four children.” The couple then decided to sell; they bought a larger block to build a home and studio to accommodate Rhonda’s artistic flair for creating beautiful oil and pastel paintings, but 12 years later their first home was re-listed for sale.

The striking white trunks of two lemon-scented gums dominate the front yard and give the illusion that native plants will reign. But as you follow the curved edge of the garden beds you find mixed plantings of roses, hollyhocks, oleanders, bougainvillea and gardenia; all flourishing under canopies of ash, elm and silver birch trees. Rhonda loves the Mediterranean colour scheme of orange, red and yellow — perhaps in homage to her husband’s Italian heritage — and this is reflected in many sections of the garden.

Quirky mosaic elements crafted by Rhonda and re-claimed items sourced by Vince add to the individual style of the Tatura garden.
<<< 47 One area has been recently revamped and planted out with gold roses,a deep burnt orange bougainvillea and fragrant gardenias; all anniversary gifts to the garden-proud couple when 50 years of marriage was celebrated. Vince is quick to acknowledge that Rhonda is the one with the “green thumb” but it’s his flair for sourcing and constructing the quirky and curious elements of the garden which add depth and character. A timber boat bought at a garage sale has been filled with white sand and shells, topped with heavy glass and christened Tatanic in reference to Tatura. It creates conversation in its new use as an outdoor table, and a disused Dethridge irrigation wheel steadily turns away in a shady corner, powered by a windscreen wiper motor. There’s a gorgeous summer house complete with thatched roof, and numerous shady sitting areas offer relaxing places to enjoy the scents and colours of the garden. Room has been made for Rhonda’s new hobby of creating intricate mosaics. One vibrant piece is a backdrop for a raised, paved seating area and another, a cylindrical bollard, is the perfect family Christmas gathering place. Working together to create the garden has been a shared interest for Rhonda and Vince and one that will continue as they gather inspiration and collectibles on their various travels. v

This autographed picture of Neil Diamond (left) was presented to Rhonda by the veteran entertainer’s staff during a 1990s concert tour. “Rhonda used to paint to Neil Diamond’s music so when he toured I contacted Sony Music and asked if he would receive a painting from her. His people said the only person he was going to speak to in Australia was (journalist) Tracy Grimshaw. We went to his concert in Melbourne and four days later there was a knock on the door and a courier delivered this,” Vince said.
VINYL RECORDS LINE HIS SHED walls, musical instruments are scattered around and album covers, posters and memorabilia tell the story of Vince Vincitorio’s life-long interest in music. When he was a small boy in southern Italy, Vince remembers skipping school to follow the musicians who played at funeral processions and, in later years, he played in bands and fulfilled an ambition to be a radio announcer.
Vince loves the music of that era but it’s also reflective of the time he met his future wife, Rhonda, near the jukebox in the local hangout, King’s Café in Tatura. Vince and Rhonda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October 2012 and the music shed is a timeline of their life together. There’s a framed photo of Vince’s prized FJ Holden, his extensive collection of hats and a vinyl copy of the couple’s special song, Lloyd Price’s Personality.
He likes to have music playing wherever he goes, a yearning that has caused him trouble at times.
For 10 years Vince shared his favourite tunes with the Goulburn Valley as the breakfast radio announcer for OneFM.
Vince laughingly recalls working at the former Shire of Rodney and arguing with his superior for permission to install a radio in his truck.
“I always played my own music, anything from the fifties through to modern. The only criteria was it had to be bright and happy so people had a good start to their day when they were on their way to work,” Vince said.
“Eventually I was allowed to, but I was told not to drill holes anywhere. Of course six or seven years later we got new trucks and they had radios fitted,” Vince said. The shed is decked out in 1950s-style with bright red bench seats, a black and white checked table top and bowls of Fantales lollies.

Precise clipped hedges, manicured lawns and mass plantings of roses create a visual feast of grandeur and style.
Similar paving forms an outdoor area in the private backyard, with a sunken fire-pit, a popular gathering place during the evening and cooler months of the year.
But for all its formality the garden is welcoming and a tranquil place to be. That is due in part to Ret, a friendly down-to-earth person who deals with life’s challenges by spending time “scratching around” in the patch of ground that she, partner Pete Green and son Leon Ahmat call home. The 1950s-style home was originally surrounded by gum trees with the associated leaf and bark litter creating a natural-looking mulch understorey. Fast forward to 2015 and the garden has evolved into a cottage-style design which perfectly complements the tasteful house renovations. Clipped pittosporums act as sentinels planted at either end of the front border that is filled with standard iceberg roses, ajuga, erigeron and snow-in-summer. She spends about 10 hours a week maintaining the garden and doesn’t need to try too hard to find an excuse to head outside. “I’ve always been the type of person who is outside doing stuff. I love beautiful spaces and I find it very good for the soul to be scratching around out here,” Ret said. The formality relaxes somewhat in the backyard. than chocolate Easter at the Bonanno family’s Tallygaroopna household centres around two things; eating great food and spending valuable time with family. What goes on the dining table is of course an impressive part of the day, with both Julie Bonanno and daughter Lucy connoisseurs of the kitchen. Julie appeared on Nine Network’s The Great Australian Bake Off in 2013, while Lucy competed on Junior MasterChef in 2010. “Easter is really important in our house, we almost celebrate it more than Christmas,” Julie said. “We have always shown cows at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney as well, and that’s where I met my husband, Rob.” On the menu for Good Friday is a family favourite, a delectable crumbed salmon recipe that can be made in three simple steps.
Crumbed Salmon Fillet Serves: Two – 2 salmon fillets – 5 slices multigrain bread – 70 g butter – 1 tsp mixed herbs – 1 tsp lime and chilli seasoning – 1 tsp lime rind (finely grated) – ½ tsp salt Blend the bread to crumbs in a food processer and add herbs, salt and then melted butter. Pack handfuls of the bread crumb mixture onto salmon and bake in a moderate oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Serve with potato wedges.
“The salmon is a really easy recipe and it is a bit of a healthier option too,” Julie said.
Carrot Cake
“It is a favourite for us, we always have salmon on Good Friday,” Lucy said.
– 1 cup self-raising flour – 2/3 cup plain flour – ½ tsp bicarbonate soda – 3 tsp mixed spice – 2/3 cup brown sugar – 2 cups grated carrot – 2/3 cup vegetable oil – 3 eggs – 2/3 cup sour cream Cream Cheese Frosting – 2 x 250 g blocks of cream cheese – 1 tsp vanilla – 100 g softened butter – 2 cups icing sugar
For the sweeter tooth, this delightful carrot cake topped with an Easter motif is the perfect choice. “I like to steer away from chocolate cake at Easter, because I find by lunch time, everyone is over chocolate,” she said. “Once again, the carrot cake is a slightly healthier option in comparison as well.” This simple recipe is ideal for children to lend a hand in the kitchen. “You don’t even use the Mixmaster with the carrot cake, you just stir it and it is very simple to decorate as well,” Julie said. Goulburn Valley Grammar Year 10 student Lucy recently returned from a World Challenge trip to Africa, and said immersing herself in another country’s cuisine and culture was an amazing experience. She hopes to continue with her passion for food, and eventually study food science and nutrition. v
