‘Thank you for shopping local’ Tatura Ritchies IGA upgrades have been named a state-of-the-art development. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
It’s estimated that the Tatura Ritchies IGA upgrades have cost roughly $18 million, with the state-of-the-art development already showing obvious benefits to locals. Ritchies IGA + Liquor national marketing manager Chris Jonker said residents of Tatura now had a world-class supermarket and liquor drive-thru on their doorstep. “The new Tatura store is based on our Fine Food and Wine model with many inclusions not seen in your typical supermarket and liquor store,” Chris said. “Sushi is made fresh in-store daily, and there is an extensive gourmet range, dry-aged meats, cheeses from around the world, a massive range of liquor including limited-release whiskey and so much more. “This is without doubt a state-of-theart development that can save people significant time when doing their weekly shop.” The Ritchies Maclean Store recently won an International Award for Retailer of the Year and was voted the best IGA in the world. Chris said the Tatura store was very similar. With the drive-thru bottle shop and supermarket now in full swing, the final stages of the development are set to finish before March next year and will include six retail opportunities. “Investments of this size are a great sign of confidence in the town,” Chris said.
The Drive-thru Bottle Shop is open.
“The more significant benefit to the town as a whole is the local employment of over 60 new staff and the flow-on effect we expect to see. “As the store grows in popularity, we will look to employ even more locals. “We would like to thank the town for their support. Ritchies, like Fishers before them, are all about the locals, and we’ve been overwhelmed with the support to date. “Thank you for shopping local. Without the support of locals, projects like this don’t happen.” Supermarket supervisor Luke Allan said the upgrades were exciting and much needed, and now feels like the destination to be. “Come and check it out for yourself. It’s amazing,” Luke said.

Waterwheel Tyre Centre moving Business growth is happening in the industrial area of Tatura. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Waterwheel Tyre Centre will be expanding its space this December and heading into the bigger shed next door where JV’s Paint and Panels is currently located at 105 Ross St, Tatura. Owner Mick Payten said the move was exciting and encouraged people to head out to the industrial side of Tatura to see the array of services. “So many businesses out this side of town are growing and getting bigger and bigger,” Mick said. “It’s great that we are growing too, but it’s also great for our town and the surrounding areas with such amazing services on their doorstep.” Waterwheel Tyre Centre services include wheel alignments, suspension checks, trailer and horse float repairs, on-site farm services, and, according to Mick, anything that has anything to do with tyres. “We stock leading brand tyres and do a bit of everything in here. Brakes, exhausts, we even have fishing supplies, bait and tackle,” Mick said. “Why not? There are lots of great spots to fish out this way. “I have a great team, and we are excited to have more space to grow the business further.” Business changes will take off at the end of December, with a grand opening in the new space on January 20 next year. For more information on Waterwheel Tyre Centre, phone Mick on 5824 1077.

Get ready for another magical year of Tatura Carols by Candlelight.
Jingle all the way to carols Warm up your vocals for this year’s Tatura Carols by Candlelight. Carols are a symbolic way to celebrate the Christmas season, creating an atmosphere of festivity and joy. They add to the overall ambience and excitement of the holidays, and the Tatura Lions Club is excited to be back again this year to host the Tatura
Carols by Candlelight on Wednesday, December 13. Tatura Lions Club volunteer Malcolm Campbell said the evening had an exciting line-up with performances from locals and students from both Tatura primary schools. “The night will kick off with a sausage
sizzle, but everyone is more than welcome to pack a picnic and enjoy the night,” Malcolm said. “It’s always a fun night for the town, and we look forward to another year.” Singing carols often brings people together, fostering community and tradition.
It’s a shared experience that can unite friends, families and strangers during the holiday season. So warm up your vocals and head to the Mactier Gardens for an unforgettable evening. “The event is set to start at 6pm and finish around 9pm,” Malcolm said.

Kindness Kare founder Kate Sidebottom with client and Tatura resident Allan MacAllister.
Kindness is like confetti, sprinkle it everywhere Kindness Kare brings happiness and support to the lives of those who have been dealt some hard cards. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
When Kindness Kare founder Kate Sidebottom was 21, she was given an opportunity that ultimately changed her life and pushed her into a career that today inspires her daily. It inspires her to bring happiness, peace, laughter, joy, independence, love, friendship, and freedom into the lives of those who have been dealt some tough cards.
Kindness Kare offers respite, palliative and nursing care, community and social interaction, domestic assistance, mentoring, education and end-of-life doula support. The company supports children right up to the elderly and prides itself on providing exceptional care to its clients with unique support options to ensure they feel valued. “We do a lot of personal care, community access, some household duties and yard maintenance, this all assists people with staying at home
and maintaining their independence as much as possible,” Kate said. “Sometimes just providing a bit of inhome support and companionship can allow family members or friends who are the carers a bit of a break and some time out for the week too. “It’s important that our clients know they can relate to us on a human level, and that’s something we’re proud of.” Eighty-year-old Tatura resident Allan MacAllister started receiving Kindness Kare services two years ago, and he said their services were invaluable.
“You can live your life to the fullest when someone else is helping you with the jobs that might be a little bit more difficult as you get older or unwell,” Allan said. “I trust them, and they have a downto-earth approach. “I don’t know what I would do without them now.” For more information regarding Kindness Kare services, please phone Kate on 0422 852 392 or email admin@kindnesskare.com.au

Tatura Farm Supplies celebrates 50 years A legacy of commitment, innovation, and community—Tatura Farm Supplies celebrates 50 years in business. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Celebrating half a century in the business world is a remarkable achievement that requires a unique perspective, unwavering dedication and a substantial amount of hard work. For Tatura Farm Supplies, reaching this milestone is a testament to its enduring commitment to good old-fashioned service and honest advice — a legacy that still thrives today. It’s a legacy that, with pride, the original owner’s daughter, Caroline Minns, stepped up to continue, and it’s a legacy she holds close to her heart. Today, it’s a legacy deserving of a celebration. One that stemmed from humble beginnings took undeniable strength to continue at times and, at the core, shows the essence of community. In July 1973, Bruce and Delphine Minns founded Tatura Farm Supplies at 195 Hogan St.
Formerly CJ Mitchell and Co Hardware and an undertakers. Today, the location is occupied by the Tatura Police Station. Neil Stewart and Bobbie Collison were inaugural employees, and alongside Bruce had a devoted approach to farming supplies. After joining Combined Rural Traders, a buying group that began in NSW, Bruce became known as “Your local bloke from CRT”. Bruce sprang into action and initiated an advertising committee to ensure that all CRT outlets in Victoria achieved maximum exposure in the press and regular special catalogues. At the time, it was a completely new style of rural marketing, and according to Bruce’s daughter and current owner, Caroline, it worked. “It was a great initiative, and it gave “local blokes” a leading edge on their competitors,” Caroline said.
Bruce Minns initiated “Your local bloke from CRT”.

Caroline and Bruce Minns
“In 1982, he organised a CRTsponsored Goulburn Valley Racing Club Meeting in Tatura. It was a fantastic event, with nearly all Victorian CRT members in attendance. “His hard work saw him awarded the first CRT Shareholder of the Year Award for 1982 and 1983. Bill Mouser joined the business in that time. “I think Dad’s love for horses, thoroughbred breeding and the hope to one day have a runner in a Melbourne Cup provided many opportunities to expand the range of stockfeed the business provided.” After working closely with her father on school holidays and between university, Caroline officially joined the business in 1990. In January of 1996, Bruce decided a new location for the business would be advantageous. The Hogan St property was being outgrown, and getting trucks in and out in the heart of town was becoming more complex. So, the dream was carried out in the industrial area on Ross St, Tatura. “At the time, the Tatura Saleyards was right across the road, so it was a great location to move to, and the business continued to grow,” Caroline said. “However, nothing comes without tough challenges, and primarily, the years of drought were hard. “Dad was always so driven, and he worked tirelessly with various committees to promote Tatura Park as a venue for many horse events, always

offering great services, and alongside Lex Bunn, he had much to do with International Dairy Week from its humble beginnings.” Bruce sadly lost his life in 2010 after a two-year battle with cancer. His dream was for Caroline to keep the business going, which is precisely what she did. “Many people doubted I could do it in such a male-dominated field,” she said. “I lost many customers in those tough years after his passing. However, with hard work, long hours and support from my husband Martin Ward and our staff, we got there, and now we get to celebrate this wonderful milestone.”
Caroline Minns has worked in the business since 1990.
Tatura Farm Supplies has seen many changes over the years and now caters not only for dairy and beef cattle, sheep and horses but also poultry, dogs, cats, rabbits, fencing requirements, hardware, work boots, tools and fodder seed supplies, both pasture and lawn. Today’s team assisting Caroline is her husband Martin, Kelvin Smith and John Maher. They continue to thrive, hold strong values, build relationships, and remember Bruce and his dedication daily. “It feels like he is here with me every day at work, and when things get tough, I find myself asking him what to do,” Caroline said.
“My husband and I often joke about how I might do things and if he would like it, but hey, I am doing it. “He was a pioneer of his day, and I am so proud of him for what he achieved and taught me. “Every day, I am fulfilling his dream, and I am so glad I stuck with it. “I wish he was here to celebrate this with us.” Bruce was a loving husband to wife Delphine and a devoted father to children Caroline and Jonathon. His unwavering commitment to his trade, family and community is a testament to the business’s 50 years of success.

Spreading cheer through giving The Reverse Advent Calendar is back and spreading joy over the festive season to people in need. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
This holiday season, Tatura Community House has once again arranged the clever initiative of the Reverse Advent Calendar. The initiative that kicked off in November is all about giving back to people less fortunate in the community through the generosity of giving. How it all works is simple. You collect your box from the Tatura Community House, and for 20 days up until December 8, you are to place one item per day in the box. Items can include food products, clothing, toys or other essential items. At the end of the designated time frame, you return your box to the community house, and it will be donated to people that are doing it a bit tough over the holiday season. Tatura Community House manager Nadine Pichler said although they were nearing the end of the initiative, it’s not too late to come and collect a box and get involved. “It’s such a lovely idea for families to get involved in and do together,” Nadine said. “It also gives children an opportunity to experience the joy of giving. “We appreciate all the time our volunteers put into the project and are so thankful for the community members who also get involved.”

Group on a special mission A group of local ladies has taken on a special mission. Girls on a Mission is a local Tatura group of women of all ages who catch up once a fortnight for fellowship and to share their crafts. Originally, GOAM was a group started by Generations Church members who crocheted blankets and donated them along with Bibles to outback Australian missions. More recently, the focus of the group has been to showcase the many craft talents of the ladies to produce items to sell to fundraise for community projects. Some of their projects include greeting cards, sewing, knitting, plant propagation, painting, jam and chutney making and crocheting. These crafts are also available to buy at Generations Op Shop, where you can find them once a fortnight crocheting and enjoying some tea in the Coffee Corner. “We meet once a fortnight on a Monday morning, and it’s a gathering for girls to get together and talk and also do our crafts,” Lisa Ussher from GOAM said. “So, at the moment, we are doing fundraising for a freezer here at Generations Food Bank.” The group is open to everyone, not just church members. If you’d like to join the group, please speak to Lisa at Generations Op Shop at 119 Hogan St, Tatura, or phone 5824 3059.

Banishing bugs Are you ready for this summer’s increased spider and insect activity? STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
After growing up in Tatura on a rural property, Pestology Pest Control owner Damian Doller found a keen interest in all things creepy crawly from a young age. After studying Natural Resource Management at RMIT, he worked in the pest control industry in Mildura. However, his interest in natural resource management led to a career back in the Goulburn Valley, managing facilities, native and outdoor spaces and agricultural land. This year, Damian and his wife Emma decided to take a leap of faith, and Pestology was born. The business supports clients in the Goulburn Valley and surrounding areas with pest control methods to manage various pests and prevent infestations while enhancing health and safety. “We aim to ensure local properties and businesses are protected from pests and the damaging effects they can cause,” Damian said. “We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from the community, particularly in Tatura, where we live with our young family.

“It’s also been rewarding to partner with local organisations and charities donating our services and having an opportunity to give back to our wonderful community too.”

Mes Amours Boutique owner Kirsty Richardson.
New space fits perfectly New rustic location for Mes Amours Boutique. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
What started as a dream for Mes Amours Boutique owner Kirsty Richardson five years ago has turned into a thriving business that now adorns a new location on Tatura’s main street. The new rustic location on 123 Hogan St, aligns with the boutique style and has brought Kirsty’s ideas together in a space she had always imagined for the business.
“I am excited to be back in the hub of the main street and to be able to help service and support the local community,” Kirsty said. “Our new space is stunning, and the older classical building is a perfect fit for the boutique.” Still retaining the original collections, Mes Amours Boutique has something for everyone. From baby wear, kids, teens and adult clothing, and a range of accessories and giftware, Kirsty said it’s a place the whole family can shop.
“We stock a collection of artwork, homewares and accessories from a range of other local businesses,” she said. “It’s lovely to collaborate with other like-minded locals to bring the best of the best to Tatura. “We now have a new men’s range made by an Australian brand in store and a range of special occasion wear for ladies.” The boutique has also created a consultancy space where they can team up with other businesses to offer
unique services like specialised bra fittings and styling support, which in the past they have found to be quite successful. Mes Amours has a complimenting boutique in Nagambie, and both stock leading brands, such as Betty Basics, Sass, St. Goliath, and Eve Girl, with new brands Daisy Says and Holster footwear also now available. “Everything has come together beautifully,” Kirsty said. “It feels like home.”

Tatura Museum volunteers Judy Foster and Kerry Gross.
Preserving Tatura's history Tatura Museum is seeking information on the iconic Rosella parrot and wording.
The Tatura Museum is reaching out to the local community for information and images related to the iconic giant-sized Rosella parrot and accompanying wording displayed at the museum. Both pieces are currently undergoing the quotation process for restoration, slated for early next year. Volunteers Judy Foster and Kerry Gross of the Tatura Museum are keen to gather any available information on these significant pieces.
“We know that both the wording and the parrot originated from the Rosella Factory. However, we are seeking any photos of these pieces on the original building,” Judy said. “Additionally, any details on their origins, such as whether they are the original or only pieces, and information on their creators would be invaluable.” When Rosella was sold to Lever and Kitchen, which later became Unilever in 1963, there were six factories, and Tatura was one of them.
NOTARY PUBLIC
Under Unilever’s ownership, the brand was sold to Stuart Alexander, a privately owned import-export company, in 2003. Currently, the brand is held by Sabrands Australia, which acquired it in April 2013. Kerry said both pieces held significant value to Tatura’s history. “These pieces are an integral part of our town’s heritage. After the sale of Rosella, they were generously passed on to the museum,” Kerry said. “It’s vital to restore and preserve our town’s history by reinstating these
artefacts on the museum building for everyone to appreciate. “Our museum attracts visitors from around the globe, and we believe that restoring these pieces will further enrich their experience. “Your contribution would be invaluable in reviving and preserving this essential part of our town’s heritage.” If you have any information regarding these significant pieces, please contact the Tatura Museum on 5824 2111 or email taturamuseum@gmail.com

Handcrafted initiative Country Women’s Association Group knits bears for Tatura primary schools.
Care Bears have been knitted with love for more than 20 years by the Country Women’s Association Group. The group’s purpose is to spread hope and joy to children going through difficult times, and they are given out by hospitals and emergency services all over the region. However, after a conversation between a teacher at Sacred Heart School in Tatura and the co-ordinator
of Rodney Junior CWA Group Lyn Trezise, the bears have now found another purpose. They will become a part of the school buddy systems in both Tatura primary schools. “It’s such a lovely idea,” Lyn said. “At the beginning of next year, when the Preps start their schooling years, they will be assigned a Year 6 buddy who will gift them one. “We are excited for the students to receive them, and we hope they bring
comfort, are something they can hold close and will help them throughout their transition.” Thirty colourful knitted Buddy Bears have been delivered to Tatura Primary School and 42 to the Sacred Heart School. Care Bears will remain in local hospitals and continue being given out by the emergency services. The bears will now serve two purposes, and is another lovely initiative giving more children a reason to smile.

Jacqui has since redesigned the space and given it a makeover, turning it into the go-to spot for people to hang out. “We want to be able to provide a space where groups can meet and have a nice, friendly environment,” she said. “We wanted to create a nice, relaxed environment for people to use.” The space is free to use and can be used for one-offs or even weekly or fortnightly meetings for community groups. Currently, the op shop sees one group which uses the space. TATURA’S Booming | December 2023
Tree drive set for another year Fresh Christmas trees ready to order. As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to infuse your home with the warmth and charm of the holidays. And what better way to do so than with a fresh, aromatic Christmas tree from the Tatura Lions Club’s annual tree drive? Once again, the Tatura Lions Club is thrilled to present its traditional tree drive, offering an array of fresh, vibrant, and real Christmas trees that range from 1.8 metres to 2.1 metres in height, available at the affordable price of $85 per tree. Tatura Lions Club volunteer Malcolm Campbell said the yearly tradition was a fantastic fundraiser for Tatura’s community. “All proceeds from the tree sales go directly back into our wonderful community,” Malcolm said. “And who doesn’t love the look and smell of a real tree in your home? “It’s a magical time of year, and we are happy to be doing it again.” Mark your calendars for the collection dates on Saturday, December 2 and 9, between 11 am and 1 pm, at the Mactier Gardens, opposite the police station on Hogan St, Tatura. For added convenience, delivery options are available for a fee of $10 per tree within a 10 km radius of Tatura or $20 for locations further out of town. To order your Christmas tree and give back to the community, please call Glenda on 0411 298 113 or Malcolm on 0429 683 775.

Mia, Jamie, Jody Vincitorio and Mal are excited to open a 1960s inspired diner in Tatura soon.
1960s inspired diner coming to town You can expect to see black and white lino flooring, classic booths, and mementos of time every way you look, in the Happy Days inspired diner that’s coming to Tatura. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Inspired by the American television sitcom Happy Days, the owner of JV’s Paint & Panel, Jody Vincitorio, has decided to close the business and open a ‘60s diner across the road, currently the Ross St Café. Jody said he had been watching the café across the road for the past few years, and the time had come to take a leap of faith and follow a childhood dream. “I have always loved diners and enjoyed watching Happy Days on TV while growing up,” Jody said. “I’ve been collecting ‘60s memorabilia for 30 years now and have finally found a place where all can
enjoy it. “It will be like stepping back in time and hopefully become a place where people will sit, enjoy a burger, listen to some tunes and relax while eating their food rather than ordering and getting straight back on the road. “Life’s busy enough as it is. Take 10 minutes and enjoy it.” A Kyabram business has brought JV’s Paint and Panel stock, and Jody will be closing the business doors at the end of December. Over the Christmas and new year break, the Ross St Café is set to take on a transformation inside and out. The café will remain open, with all work taking place after hours and weekends.
You can expect to see black and white lino flooring, classic booths, and mementos of time every way you look. You will also receive the same professional service from the current employees. “The girls will be wearing the pink and white striped uniforms complete with white caps — I think they are excited,” Jody said. “Sixties music will rock all day long inside and out, and there will be seating outside, too. “I will be there helping and hopefully won’t get in the way. It’s a big change to what I’ve been doing for 40 years. But it’s a dream come true.”
Down the track, Jody hopes to open the diner to private bookings as a venue where people can come together for events and special occasions. The diner’s name is yet to be confirmed, and Jody said residents would have to watch the space. In the meantime, Jody wanted to thank his valued customers from JV’s Paint & Panel. “I can’t do both, so the time has come to close up,” he said. “Thank you to everyone for the ongoing support over the years. “Come and visit me at the diner for a hot dog and a milkshake.” The diner will be open Monday to Friday for breakfast and lunch from 6 am to 2 pm.
Public speaking final success Lilijana Keane was the runner-up in the Lions V District Junior Public Speaking State Final. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Tatura Primary School Year 6 student Lilijana Keane has come runnerup in the Lions V District Junior Public Speaking State Final, held on September 17. The Maiden Gully hosted the final – Marong Lions Club, where Lilijana delivered a speech on a strange world record set in history. “I chose to do my speech on the world’s tallest man,” Lilijana said. “And I delivered it as if I was the man, which gave it a cool perspective of the actual person.
“I really enjoyed the process of writing the speech, getting help from a teacher to bump it up a little, and then performing it in front of my class and then total strangers. “At first, I was nervous, but the more I practised my speech, it got easier.” The Junior Public Speaking Program aims to encourage students to participate in public speaking, help build their confidence and allow them the opportunity to hone their natural skills in front of a variety of audiences. The freedom to present their speech, unaided and uninhibited, allows the audience to see their unique, charismatic personalities.
Students get to use their imagination, as well as take part in opportunities that expand their research skills and knowledge. Lilijana went through three stages before coming runner-up in the final and said the whole competition was a lot of fun. “I didn’t even know it was a competition at the start — our teacher tricked us,” she said. “That probably helped our nerves at the beginning. “But once you get up there, it doesn’t feel as scary. “I learnt a lot.”

MINI FIELD OF WOMEN As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Goulburn Valley Health hosted the Mini Field of Women on October 24 at Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. This was a great way to remember and pay tribute to those impacted by breast cancer. The pink lady and the blue man silhouettes symbolise the more than 20,458 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. The white lady symbolises the more than 3,255 women and 36 men who die from breast cancer each year. GV Health McGrath breast care nurse Michelle Parish attended the event. Michelle has a passion for raising breast cancer awareness and shared information on the importance of early detection and regular breast screen checks. Community members, staff and residents were able to pay their tributes to loved ones and enjoy pink cupcakes.
SEASONS GREETINGS On behalf of GV Health and everyone at our Tatura campus, we wish you a happy and safe festive season. While this year has not been without difficulties, GV Health and community members have come together to overcome them. We are grateful for the support from the community, local businesses and service providers. Have a great festive season and we look forward to continuing to provide excellent care and services to everyone in 2024.
FACILITY NEWS VOLUNTEERS
To improve patient care and experience, we have recently introduced ceiling-tracking hoisters throughout the facility. The tracking hoists will assist in moving patients and sitting them upright. GV Health and the community reference committee funded this change. Following a submission to the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, GV Health secured funding to replace airconditioning units at the facility. The replacement of airconditioning will see individual in-room controls and aid in improving infection control, humidity and air quality. Work has started and will be completed in four stages, finishing on Monday, March 4, 2024.
Volunteers are an integral part of our Residents Lifestyle program. We are seeking a volunteer capable of driving a minibus to assist our lovely residents as they get out and about the town.
