New traditions for Christmas Eve This year four-year-old Evie Fennell will have a special present to open on Christmas Eve. The Shepparton younster ’s mum Bridgette Fennell has followed the traditions her family kept when she was young but decided this year to start a new one for Evie. “When I was young my mum had a tradition where she would let us pick one present each on Christmas Eve; I want to do something similar but a little different for Evie, ” Miss Fennell said. “I ’m going to purchase a big box for her to open on Christmas Eve and Àll it with fun things, ” she said. “I plan to put in new pyjamas, hot chocolate mix, popcorn and a Christmas DVD to watch together, a Christmas book to read before bed, something new to wear the next day and a colouring book to keep her entertained, ” Miss Fennell said. Christmas Eve boxes are popular online and are generally given to children at sunset on Christmas Eve. The idea is to give children exciting activities to do with their family before going to bed.
Children’s Christmas Eve box ideas:
Miss Fennell got the idea from a friend who made one last year and said she had been looking at examples online ever since. Other Christmas traditions Miss Fennell keeps are visiting Santa for a photo and taking her daughter to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. “I used to go looking at lights every Christmas with my parents, ” she said. “I loved going Christmas light hunting so I wanted to continue that tradition with Evie. ” Miss Fennell said she liked continuing old traditions but was excited to have a new one between Evie and herself. “Spending time watching a movie and reading a book is a nice way to spend Christmas Eve together, ” she said.

Plenty for motorcycle lovers AJ’s Motorcycles’ two-storey showroom is bursting with Christmas gifts for every family member this holiday season. Accessories manager Mel Jones said AJ ’s was full of the latest most popular items in the industry. She said their most popular item at this time of the year was the wide range of apparel. “We ’ve got casual Fox apparel starting from age four and up, including tees, board shorts and hats, ” she said. “We also stock the new 2016 riding apparel for men, women and kids from Fox and Alpine Stars. ” Mrs Jones said the store had a wide range of items for children including toy models, a KTM training bike and protective apparel. “Parents come in looking for protection for their kids; we sell boots, goggles, gloves and armour, ” she said. AJ ’s also stocks lunch sacks, drink bottles and backpacks which

make for great gifts for children in time for the new school year. For thrill-seeking adults, AJ ’s is offering a special run-out deal on the 2015 KTM 125 SX with factory sticker kit for $8000. Its normal retail price is $10 000. AJ ’s is the largest motorbike dealership in Victoria so it is no surprise the showroom is jampacked with motorcycle options from the EXC range, with prices starting at $14 000 including full registration. AJ ’s provides ongoing support for its customers through its workshop and large range of aftermarket parts. The workshop is an authorised roadworthy centre, which services and maintains all bike models. “You can bring your bike in, even from other stores, ” Mrs Jones said. The store has a large collection of stocking Àllers such as wallets, phone cases and key chains perfect for Kris Kringle gifts.

Quirky Christmas gifts Everyone is unique, so leave an impression this Christmas with a special gift that you won’t find anywhere else in Shepparton. Just Me Patsy has cool and quirky presents for those special women on your Christmas list and will help you decide on the perfect gift. Business owner Patsy Winter said customers just needed to know the person they were buying for and the staff at Just Me Patsy would take care of the rest. “Write a list of who you are shopping for, not what you want to buy … we can sort that out for you, ” Mrs Winter said. Just Me Patsy has operated in Shepparton for Àve years and stocks a unique selection of fashion, accessories and giftware for women, with many items designed and produced in Australia. Mrs Winter said the items in-store were not “run-of-the-mill ” and many of the brands stocked, including EMU footwear, could not be found in other local stores. “We just have great stuff that
is unique, original and interesting … it ’s all good quality and it ’s just quirky stuff that I think is cool. ” While Mrs Winter does take requests to reorder some items, stock generally operates as limited edition. Not only is there a great range of products in-store, but Just Me Patsy covers a range of budgets — from costume jewellery to designer handbags. For smaller gifts or stocking Àllers, there are plenty of bits and pieces such as bathroom accessories, candles, diffusers, incense and quirky ornaments for the home, including a limited edition collection of Christmas themed décor. But if you cannot Ànd the right gift in store, Mrs Winter will know exactly where to direct you. “I send customers all over Shepparton. ” To Ànd out more about the store and upcoming VIP shopping day, ‘like ’ Just Me Patsy on Facebook and sign up to the store ’s database.
Patsy Winter will be surrounded by gifts in her store this Christmas. (Santa Claus not for sale).

A perfect time to give Christmas is a time associated with happiness, spending time with loved ones, a lot of food and gift giving — but imagine someone in your neighbourhood not having anyone to visit on Christmas Day or a child waking up on Christmas morning and not having one present to open. Not-for-proÀt groups work to make Christmas a brighter time for the less fortunate. This year the Community Fund Goulburn Valley is running two appeals: the ‘Baskets of Joy ’ appeal and the annual Gift Giving Tree appeal. Baskets of Joy, or washing baskets, are being delivered to local businesses and organisations where employees are asked to collect donations of non-perishable food items and essentials for families in need this Christmas. Baskets will be collected and delivered to Shepparton FamilyCare for distribution to struggling families throughout Greater Shepparton. “It ’s well understood that Shepparton is a place that has had signiÀcant challenges and they ’re ongoing, ” FamilyCare chief executive ofÀcer David Tennant said. Mr Tennant said FamilyCare aimed to reach as many people in need as possible this Christmas. “What we would like to see is a reduction in the families needing our assistance and there have been examples in the past where we have provided support to people and when they ’re back on their feet the next year, they ’re helping others. ” Mr Tennant said he was overwhelmed by the
generosity emerging during Christmas time. “It ’s a real expression of community, and Shepparton should be proud of that. ” This is the Àrst year that Community Fund Goulburn Valley has partnered with Greater Shepparton City Council and FamilyCare for the Baskets of Joy appeal. Orders for baskets close on Monday, December 14 and they will be distributed to families the following week. The Gift Giving Trees appeal asks people to leave an unwrapped gift for a primary school aged child who would receive very little, or possibly nothing, at Christmas. The Community Fund Goulburn Valley chief executive ofÀcer Cheryl Hammer said the fund would collect the gifts and hand them out to a local primary school. The school is selected based on its overall socio-economic status and every student receives a gift. Last year, some workplaces also got on board and had their employees purchase gifts to leave under the Gift Giving Trees instead of running the usual ofÀce Kris Kringle. Gifts do not have to be expensive and go directly to local families in need. For more information about the appeals, phone Cheryl Hammer on 5832 8221 or visit www.thecommunityfund.com.au
The Gift Giving Trees will be up at the following locations from Tuesday, December 1 until Christmas Eve: • Shepparton Marketplace • Woolworths Shepparton Marketplace • Woolworths Shepparton Archer Street • Riverside Plaza, Kialla • Santa’s Hut at Harris Scarfe, Maude Street Mall, Shepparton
Doing good at Christmas The Good Guys Shepparton will play Secret Santa this year as it surprises a deserving local individual or family with a much needed gift this Christmas.
Rodney Arthur, Matt Ciavarella and Alan Cooper have plenty of fun appliances for gifts this Christmas at The Good Guys Shepparton.
Page 10—‘Ultimate Christmas Guide’, November, 2015
Shepparton store general manager Rodney Arthur said he was thrilled to be able to provide support and give back to the Shepparton community at Christmas. “Doing good is at the heart of everything we do at The Good Guys and we are committed to continuing our community support at both Christmas time and long into the future, ” Mr Arthur said. “We understand that Christmas is meant to be a time of joy and togetherness but it isn ’t always possible because of circumstances. “We are working with our cause partners to identify a deserving individual or family in our community to grant their Christmas wish and spread our ‘doing good ’ joy to those who need it most. ’ ’ The Good Guys Shepparton
supports The Community Fund Goulburn Valley, Orange Sky Laundry and Ministry of Food Australia through its local giving program. The local giving program sees a percentage from each transaction, in-store and online, donated to the store ’s local community partners. Customers are encouraged to participate in the local giving program by choosing which charity they want their donation to go to by dropping a special Doing Good token in the dedicated token box for their chosen charity as they complete their transaction. Mr Arthur noted there was sure to be a range of small appliances on the Christmas list for many Shepparton residents this Christmas. “In the lead-up to Christmas, small appliances have been Áying out the door, with the NutriBullet a key favourite for locals, ” he said.

Add someone in need to the Christmas shopping list The joyous and generous spirit of Christmas will be in full swing during December at Riverside Plaza, Kialla. The Christmas Gift Giving Trees, organised by the Community Fund Goulburn Valley, will be up from Tuesday, December 1 until Christmas Eve, in support of struggling children and families in the Goulburn Valley. The Community Fund Goulburn Valley ’s chief executive ofÀcer Cheryl Hammer said about 600 gifts were given out last year to children at a local primary school and three kindergartens, and the fund was hoping for similar Àgures this year. “Rather than asking people for money, it is a great way for people to be able to support a family or kids who might otherwise miss out, ” Ms Hammer said. Donated gifts need to be suitable for
primary school aged children and can be left unwrapped in the large containers under the Gift Giving Tree at Riverside Plaza. Santa will be visiting the plaza to pose in photos with children (of all ages) and take Christmas wish lists requests from Saturday, November 28 until Christmas Eve. Local company Dale Wright Photography will be taking the photographs. This will be the Àfth year that Dale Wright Photography has been involved in the Santa photos, and Riverside Plaza is proud to continue supporting local businesses. With specialty food and retail stores, customers can tick off any remaining presents on the Christmas list and stock up the freezer ready for the festive season.

Gifts for any skill level It can be tricky finding an appealing gift for the men on the Christmas shopping list, but regardless of his skill level, there is something for your dad, grandpa, brother or husband at Ultimate Fasteners.
Dean Jones holds some Christmas gift ideas, a Milwaukee drill and Kincrome cooler, in store.
Page 16—‘Ultimate Christmas Guide’, November, 2015
Whether the gift is for a novice handyman — or handywoman — or an experienced tradesman, Ultimate Fasteners will have a suitable and practical option to keep them busy. “We are not all about the farmer or the mechanic or the engineer, we are also about the home handyman, the car man or anyone who does something around the house, ” business co-owner Dean Jones said. Of course there are plenty of nuts and bolts in store, but customers can also Ànd a top range of power tools, from brands including Kincrome and Milwaukee, machinery, welding products, workwear and much more. Mr Jones expected that the
limited edition toolkit with a portable Bluetooth speaker would be a popular choice for the younger or beginner handyman. “It ’s priced really well and it ’s something a little bit different. ” A limited edition range of Christmas gift ideas, starting from $9.95, is also available at Ultimate Fasteners. Mr Jones said customers were welcome to make requests for speciÀc orders. “If we haven ’t got something in stock, we will try and get it in for you, ” he said. Ultimate Fasteners is proud to be a local company supporting the community. “We are locally owned, employing local people and investing back into the local community. ” Kincrome is currently running a competition for customers to review one of its products and go in the draw to win one of 10 of the toolkits with a portable Bluetooth speaker. Perfect for summertime Gift-giving season is also a great opportunity to get ready for the party season as the warmer weather tempts people to host dinner and drinks in the open air. ‘‘Tis the season to treat yourself to something you not only want, but something you might need to add to the outdoor entertainment setting this summer. Harvey Norman Shepparton’’s furniture and bedding franchisee Neil Kuhl said summer was the time when a lot of people started thinking outdoor furniture and entertaining and potentially considered buying themselves a larger item or an item to share for Christmas. ““People wouldn’’t traditionally think of Harvey Norman Furniture as a Christmas gift destination but we have a range that might suit some customers,”â€? Mr Kuhl said. Barbecues and outdoor furniture are a popular choice at this time of year and Harvey Norman stocks a range of barbecues starting
from $99, including brands like Sunbeam, George Foreman and Masport. There is something to suit all needs. ““We have complete kitchen barbecues right down to small portable barbecues,” Mr Kuhl said. He said a recliner chair was a great idea for parents or grandparents, and there were plenty of ideas to deck out children’’s bedrooms in the new year with new manchester and furniture, including bunk beds. Customers are reminded that Harvey Norman also stocks a variety of decorator items for indoor and outdoor settings, including ornaments, large mirrors and colourful canvas prints for those bare walls that need some sprucing up. A range of outdoor furniture at Harvey Norman is made in Australia and Mr Kuhl recommends getting in quick because sold-out furniture can take six to eight weeks to order.
Neil Kuhl says barbecues are a great idea for the summer season.

Cooking is on-trend this Christmas Gadgets are a good way to put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas and shoppers can find trendy items to impress family and friends in the electrical department at Harvey Norman, Riverside Plaza. “This year, it ’s all about the nutritional blenders like the NutriBullet and the Nutri Ninja — they are going to be huge, ” electrical department franchisee Joe Marruso said. He said the popularity of cooking shows had encouraged more people to get into the kitchen and experiment and he expected kitchen appliances to be a popular choice this Christmas. “People are buying the more expensive and higher quality products because of all the cooking shows demonstrating all the things
you can do — cooking is fun now. ” Even the standard staple items in the kitchen can make great gifts. “Gone are the days of boring kettles and toasters — this year we have a range of great colours for kitchen appliances, ” Mr Marruso said. Televisions and home entertainment items are a classic choice, especially as a gift for the whole family. “A new big screen will never go astray, ” Mr Marruso said. He said giftcards were always a great option, as the product diversity in-store could make it difÀcult to pick the right personal items and everyone ’s budget was different. “One of the best gifts could be a giftcard because we sell so many things and the amount on the giftcard could contribute to the bigger gift they really want. ”

Give Christmas a sweet smell Discover a fragrance for everyone’s personality at John Anderson Pharmacy this Christmas. The staff are trained to help you choose the right gift for your loved ones from the pharmacy ’s range of prestige makeup, skincare and fragrance brands. John Anderson Pharmacy sells an array of makeup brands and is the only place to Ànd coveted brands Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancôme and Shiseido in Shepparton. Pharmacy assistant Renee O ’Loughlin suggested gift packs as a present for loved ones if people were struggling to Ànd the perfect gift. “Makeup gift packs are really popular because you ’re getting something extra, ” she said. “The packs offer variety, which is perfect if you ’re not sure what to get someone. ” Classic fragrance brands are available for men and women at John Anderson Pharmacy, including Narciso Rodriguez, Valentino, Christian Dior and Prada.
Mrs O ’Loughlin said mini perfume gift sets were available if you were not sure what scent to purchase, allowing the recipient to try a bit of everything. Estee Lauder has two gift sets available, the Àrst featuring four bottles of perfume for $59 and the second with Àve bottles for $70. The next step up for fragrance sets is the Chloe perfume gift box with three bottles for $120. Mrs O ’Loughlin suggested gift packs by MOR cosmetics for Kris Kringle gifts with their attractively packaged sets starting at just $12.95. “They offer a variety of products and they ’re very appealing, ” she said. A range of homeware items are available from John Anderson Pharmacy, including candles and room diffusers. John Anderson Pharmacy also offers free gift wrapping services in store for any gift purchased, leaving you with more time to shop.
Staff members Alex and Jacinta at John Anderson Pharmacy can help you pick the perfect gift for loved ones this Christmas.

With the holiday season coming up and some long road trips ahead for many families, Shepparton Telstra Stores ’ managing director Scott Kelly suggested a mobile tablet which could be used at home on wiÀ or out and about on the mobile network. “Kids can sit in the back seat of the car and stream movies, Facetime and Facebook and all sorts of things, ” Mr Kelly said. He said mobile tablets were also popular with people who did not use internet at home but spent a lot of time travelling remotely. Mr Kelly said handsets were a common gift in the Christmas season and there was a handset on the market for any individual needs or requirements. “The iPhone and Samsung handsets are always very popular at this time of year. ”
He said there were limitededition deals coming up, particularly with prepaid phone plans, and bundling and data sharing options to suit speciÀc needs. Mr Kelly also encouraged people to get on board the NBN connection and enjoy faster internet. “Shepparton is in one of the highest penetrating areas in Australia with access to the NBN network … it was one of the Àrst spots in Australia to have the most widespread coverage of NBN rollout. ” NBN connection will be mandatory for all households and businesses needing internet connection. Shepparton ’s Telstra stores have a ‘Tech Bar ’ service to assist customers with the set-up and navigation of their new devices. For full details on plans and terms and conditions, visit your local Telstra Shop at Shepparton Marketplace or in the city.

Right tool for the right job Whether you’re buying for the professional tradesperson or the do-it-yourself home owner, Total Tools Shepparton can help you tick some Christmas gift items off your list. Stocking a full range of power tools from leading brands including Milwaulkee, Makita and Hitachi, the Benalla Rd business also sells hand tools, automotive equipment and air compressors. Owner Ray Cox has traded under the Total Tools banner for about 12 months and said the business had a strong emphasis on supplying trade quality tools for a variety of applications. He said the plethora of home improvement and renovation programs on television had led to increased numbers of customers coming through the door and seeking advice. “They come in and ask for advice about which tools they need for whatever project they ’re planning. We help them Ànd the
right tool for the right job, ” Mr Cox said. Full tool kits including spanner and sprocket sets, tool boxes, work lights on stands, ladders and tools and accessories for cutting, polishing and spray painting are available along with builder ’s pencils, measuring tapes and ratchet straps. For the metal workers there is a selection of welders, helmets and welding rods for large and small jobs. In the lead-up to summer, large pedestal fans with water misters are a great option to cool down the workshop or outdoor entertaining area. Mr Cox said the Total Tools Christmas catalogue would be released in early December and was packed with specials and gift ideas. For those hard-to-buy-for family members and friends, there are gift cards and the business offers a lay-by facility.

Precious gifts for the whole family Everyone’s style is catered for this Christmas at Prouds The Jewellers. All the classic coveted gifts are available, including earrings and gold bracelets for women, and dog tags and watches for men. Store manager Lyndell King said new styles were arriving in time for Christmas, with the tree of life and inÀnity symbols on trend this holiday season. “The tree of life symbol is really catching on in Shepparton, it is everywhere at the moment, ” she said. “We also expect our love story necklace, where you buy the outside pendant and change the inner discs, to be popular this year. ” The Maude St Mall store is offering a Christmas special Love Story pack including the outer pendant and three interchangeable discs for $139. Ms King also noted some styles were becoming increasingly fashionable gifts for men.
“Bracelets are becoming more popular, as well as dress rings, ” she said. Jewellery is not just for adults at Prouds The Jewellers. Ms King said the store stocked a great range of children ’s items for Christmas. Signet rings, sibling pieces and identity jewellery are available in fun designs. This year customers have the chance to purchase a Jewellery Care Plan for purchases of $200 or more. The plan comes at an added cost, but covers most jewellery maintenance services. Customers have the option to purchase a three or 10-year plan, which will cover up to the original price in maintenance repairs. “You can come in up to two weeks after the purchase date and elect to buy the care plan, ” Ms King said. The store has more than just jewellery on offer this Christmas with money boxes, jewellery boxes and crystal all at reduced prices.
The Love Stories necklace is anticipated to be one of Prouds The Jewellers’ most popular gifts this Christmas.
