Spring is springing, and for this garden buff, you will find me seeking out handy hints and ideas for my patch.
I will also find some time to attend the Friends of Gargarro open garden festival in Girgarre at the end of October.
If my garden were larger than it is, more like a farm, I would find myself at the Elmore Field Days at the start of October, getting innovative ideas from the 700 exhibitors on show.
Closer to Echuca Moama, spring is all action along the Murray River with Sweat vs Steam in October and the massive Murray Paddle and Barry Beehag Ski Race in November.
If throwing a line in the river is more your thing, the Campaspe carp catch is on October 20 in Rochester to help remove this pest from our waterways and enable our beautiful native fish to thrive.
The Rural Ambassador competition at this year’s Echuca Moama Agriculture Show in November is set to be huge.
I will be looking around the pavilion comparing my cooking to others before finding a good spot to view the massive Saturday fireworks display.
Spring is Spring Racing season, with the annual Melbourne Cup Day at Echuca Racing Club filled with racing, fashion, entertainment and family activities in the heart of country Victoria.
Local favourite, the Moama Bowling Club Gunbower Gold Cup at the Gunbower Racing Club is also on October 5.
On Thursday, November 7, I will be getting frocked up for the Vivid annual Oaks Day fundraising spectacular at Junction, Moama hosted by Jo Stanley, with a special guest appearance from 2015 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne.
To round out my adventures I’m jumping on and off the bus at the much-loved choose-your-own-adventure wine festival, Perricoota Pop and Pour.
This year you might find me at one of the VIP Pop and Pour packages, travelling between Echuca Moama’s wonderful wineries in a horse-drawn carriage. So many events to look forward to, I can’t wait.

Kate Miller-Heidke playing live
KATE MILLER-HEIDKE IS PLAYING IN ECHUCA FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY.
The award-winning singer-songwriter traverses the worlds of folk, pop, opera and musical theatre. She has performed on stages as varied as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Coachella, the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Eurovision Song Contest, the Sydney Opera House, and the Roebuck Bay Hotel in Broome.
And now, after long months locked away writing, Kate is hitting the road to play in dozens of beautiful theatres around Australia on the Catching Diamonds Tour.
Kate will be playing her greatest hits and most beloved pop songs, performing tracks from her original musicals, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical and the brand new Bananaland, and some unexpected covers, taking requests and telling stories from across her varied career.
Excitingly, she’ll also be debuting new material from her forthcoming sixth studio album, which will explore the Gothic folk genre.
This is a special opportunity to see Kate in intimate, stripped-back mode, accompanied by her longterm collaborator Keir Nuttall on guitar.
The bendy poles from Eurovision will be there emotionally, but not physically.
“Playing live has always been at the heart of what I do I live for it,” Kate said.
“I can’t wait to get back to some places I haven’t been in ages, and some I’ve never been to, and connect with my amazing audiences across Australia.
“Regional crowds are some of the greatest people to play for.”
Like all Kate Miller-Heidke shows, the Catching Diamonds Tour will celebrate voice, storytelling, emotion, humour, and music that transports and transcends.
Catch Kate Miller-Heidke at Echuca Paramount on Thursday, September 26 at 7.30 pm. Tickets at the box office or at echucaparamount.com/

Unplug and play at Jigarre Jammin’
PEOPLE COME FROM FAR AND WIDE TO STRUM, SING AND JIG AT THE JIGARRE JAMMIN’ CAMP.
The camp is one of two weekends a year in Girgarre, where the monthly Jigarre Jammin’ session extends to the whole weekend.
The other Jigarre Jammin’ camp is held in April. Jigarre Jammin’ organiser Irene Labbett said about 30 odd campers set up in each camp.
“Technically, it starts on Friday, but people start rocking up earlier in the week,” Irene said.
“It is quite casual and they catch up with friends and jam around the park.”
On Friday night, the camp holds a ‘walk-up’ concert, with Jigarre Jammin’ sessions on Saturday and oldtime gospel singing on Sunday.
There is no need to practice before coming along, or if you don’t own an instrument, the group has some you can borrow.
“People seem to really love the open mics, being able just to walk up and perform,” Irene said.
“Together, they form little bands and perform songs they learn over the weekend.
“You can come along and listen, or you can come along, sing and perform.
“If you have any sort of skills at all, if you have learned a few years of guitar, say in your youth and have not done anything since, we keep it at a level for people who are not professional musicians.
“We make it easy for people to play along.
“We put the words with the chords up on the screen, and the songs are kept in a simple, catchy format.
There is no need to book, but the committee asks that if possible, book by visiting www.girgarre.com.
au/jigarre-jammin.
This is so they know how many people are expected to camp over the weekend and can accommodate everyone.
Jigarre Jammin’ Camp is on Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29.
Jump up for basketball
THE ECHUCA MOAMA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION WILL BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT IN SEPTEMBER.
A week after the Junior Country Jamboree brings the best under-12 players to the border, juniors of all age divisions can get involved in the action as the EMBA hosts its annual basketball tournament.
The event features more than 100 teams that flock to Echuca for a three-day basketball festival.
The sheer volume of players and teams, around 1000 in total, has in the past necessitated the event to spill over across the region, as far as Kyabram and Rochester in some cases.
While competing teams may come from across Victoria and as far as parts of NSW, local competitors also form a key part of the field.
Last year saw 20 EMBA teams compete, the most ever, join the tournament across the age-grades, from under-12s up to under-18s.
The tournament will be held from September 27 to 29 at the Echuca Basketball Stadium. For more information on the annual tournament email info@echucabasketball.com.au

“It is drive-through, so it is extremely quick.
“There is a lot of food on offer as well, specials and seasonal items on the drive-through menu.”
A lot of the food on offer at Latte Lane can also be made gluten-free

High tea, art and flora
AT THE GIRGARRE OPEN GARDENS FESTIVAL, A SELECTION OF LOCALS SWING THEIR GARDEN GATES OPEN AND WELCOME THE PUBLIC TO VIEW THEIR AMAZING CREATIONS AND DESIGNS.
As part of the Girgarre Open Gardens Festival, from 2 pm, Bonshaw Estate will host a high tea on its sprawling lawns, along with artists, musicians and flora demonstrations all day.
Girgarre and Surrounds Open Garden Festival co-ordinator Lorraine Warde said people could spend considerable time in each garden, including a new garden this year.
“We try and have a new garden each year,” Lorraine said.
“And the new garden this year, it is a very unusual garden.
“It has a lot of things on display, quite a diverse range of garden art on display.”
The Gargarro precinct will be open on the day, including the nursery, botanical gardens and café.
The festival is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who enjoy nothing more than helping their community and seeing the joy on everyone’s faces during the event.
“It is where you get different ideas from different gardens,” Lorraine said.
“It is all run by volunteers and we have volunteers manning the gate and working in the kitchen at Bonshaw.
“The nursery will be open and we will have plants for sale.
“We had one lady, one of our volunteers, and she was going around the different gardens and her poor husband, because she was going ‘Clarence, see this. You can do this …’
“And that is what it is all about getting new ideas for your own garden.”
All funds raised go directly to Girgarre’s Community Car and Friends of Gargarro Botanical Gardens.
“We use the community car for doctor’s trips to Melbourne, Bendigo, and Shepparton, it helps people in the town get around,” Lorraine said
“And the good part is it picks people up from their door and drops them back again.”
On the day, a barbecue will be held using products from businesses to raise money for the local kindergarten.
Girgarre and Surrounds Open Garden Festival will be held on Sunday, October 27 from 10 am to 4 pm.
Start from the Gargarro Botanic Gardens, 481 Winter Rd, Girgarre.

Markets, fun and food — you can’t beat it
TONGALA, ONE WEEKEND, GRAB A BARGAIN; THE NEXT, KICK BACK AND RELAX AT EATS AND BEATS.
Tongala Eats and Beats is an alcohol-free event for the whole family.
The music concert with a market, food vans and kids’ activities will be headlined by Grim Fawkner, with support from Jessica Lorraine and special guest Toby Brooks.
“There are lots of kids’ activities, face painting, all the old school games, bubbles and things like that, to keep the kids involved where the music is,” Tongala Development Group secretary Amber Townsend said.
“There is a designated seating area, and we encourage people to bring their picnic blankets and kick back on the grass at the Tongala Soundshell and shire lawns,” Amber said.
“Set up for the afternoon for some nice relaxing vibes and support the market.”
For those after a bite to eat to go with the beats, a range of food trucks will be on-site, including HarryOs, the Port Ice Creamery, smoothie truck, and so much more.
Angela expressed thanks to the major sponsor of Tongala Eats and Beats, the Community Bank Tongala, and other businesses that support the event.
Tongala Community Garage Sale
The weekend before Tongala Eats and Beats is the Tongala Community Garage Sale.
More than 50 houses in the town participated in 2023, and Angela thinks even more homes will participate this year.
“People pay their registration to be included in the map, but then all the money that they make in their sales remains with the sellers,” Angela said.
“This is a way of supporting and giving families an opportunity to generate extra revenue, and it ties in with our vision of sustainability.
“You can tell who is registered as they have their numbers up on their gates, and balloons and things.
“There is normally a general start time for everyone, and it is just a great day for the town.
“We have a lot of people walking around, being really sociable.
“We encourage people to visit the street art, the murals and the monuments on the main street as well.
Tongala Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, October 5 — pick up a map from the Kiosk in Mangon St, Tongala.
Tongala Eats and Beats, Tongala Soundshell will be held on Sunday, October 13 from 11 am to 3 pm.

“We have a display of grassland grasses and a few plants and flowers that grow in the grasslands, out towards Mt Terrick.
“When you have native flowers in the garden, it attracts native bees, which are good pollinators for all different types of plants.

Food and wine festival a treat
CELEBRATE STANHOPE FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL IS ON AGAIN THIS YEAR.
“We had our inaugural festival in 2022, and it was a roaring success,” Stanhope Food and Wine Festival committee member Christine Dicketts said.
“This led to a successful festival again in 2023 and our hopes are high for 2024.
“We had over 750 people and just the perfect weather; it was a lovely day.
“All in the main street of Stanhope.
“We blocked off the street and had picket fences from the shire, and with the artificial grass, it just looked terrific.”
Now a mainstay of the Campaspe event calendar, the festival brings the community together and highlights the region’s great food offerings. The street party will include various activities, food and wine from local vendors, music and children’s entertainment.

Sweat vs Steam challenge on
RUNNERS ARE SET TO TEST THEIR METTLE AGAINST THE MIGHT OF ONE OF ECHUCA’S HISTORIC PADDLE STEAMERS.
The annual Sweat vs Steam will return on Sunday, October 6 with entries open for various race events.
Ten kilometre and 5 km runs are available, with juniors 6–12 able to take part in a 2 km Junior River Run, and under-12s having the option of the 600 m kids dash.
The unique aspect of Sweat vs Steam is that runners across all events will face off against one of Echuca’s historic paddle steamers, who will be racing runners to the finish line.
River conditions determine how fast the vessel can move on the water, so runners can’t be sure how long they have before the steamer sounds its arrival.
Each distance is staggered so that all competitors have an opportunity to take on the paddle steamer.
“Obviously, the big (drawcard) is that all participants are racing against the paddle steamer,” event director Sarah Mulkearns said, ahead of the 2023 event.
“So that in itself, and just the Echuca Port area, to be able to run through the Discovery Centre … is really unique for all the participants.”
Sweat vs Steam started in 1998 as a half-marathon event and has grown to into its current form, with almost 400 entrants taking part last year.
The event serves as a community fundraiser, with the proceeds going to community clubs, schools, and not-for-profits.
“Since its inception that was the whole premise of the event, so any funds that are raised from the event go back into the community,” Sarah said.
Last year’s event raised $15,000 which was distributed back into the community.
Sweat vs Sweat will be held on Sunday, October 6, with the 10 km event starting at 8 am from Hopwood Gardens, Echuca. To enter Sweat vs Steam, visit www.sweatvssteam.com.au

Walk supports HeartKids
TWO FEET AND A HEARTBEAT IS FOR HEARTKIDS’ FAMILIES TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THEIR HEART KIDS AND HAVE A MOMENT OF REFLECTION FOR OUR HEART ANGELS.
HeartKids is a not-for-profit organisation that uses lived experience to support children and their families who have been born with or have acquired childhood heart disease, CoHD.
In Campaspe, River Powles and his mum, Carly, are the ambassadors for HeartKids; hence, the Rochester event is called River’s Run.
All are welcome to join a fundraising walk for HeartKids in Rochester on Sunday, October 13 in support of children like River.
The event honours our heart angels as well with a special memorial at 10am before setting off on the walk.
Every day, eight children are born with a heart defect, that is, a family every three hours whose life will change in a heartbeat.
Four lives are tragically lost each week.
This event is a 4km walk in honour of the four lives lost each week to congenital and childhoodacquired heart disease.
Or you can choose to do 8km in honour of the eight babies born each day with CoHD.
CoHD is the leading cause of death in Australian babies under the age of one.
Over 80,000 Australian children and adults live with CoHD, with the impact extended to their many family members and carers.
Unfortunately, undergoing heart surgery is not a cure.

Let him entertain you
FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, PAUL HOGAN HAS MADE SINGING ROBBIE WILLIAMS’ HITS AND WELL-KNOWN NUMBERS OF HIS OWN.
“When I left high school, I was sort of lost for a while,” Paul said.
“Then, at the age of 25, I was doing a lot of local music theatre shows, so I did a Bachelor of Music Theatre in Ballarat.
“Then I went back to working in an office for about five years.
“I joined a Robbie Williams tribute show and I remember doing our work Christmas break-up party and I mentioned that I did a show at work.
“My boss saw me, and the next week said, ‘I think you should resign’.
“And I’m thinking what do you mean? and he said, ‘You are wasting your time here. You work hard, but you should be performing’.
“And so, from age 35 to now, I’ve been performing full-time.”
Robbie Williams is not the only persona Paul has, also performing Beach Boys, Frankie Valli, and Michael Bublé shows.
“Funnily enough, I didn’t know too much about Robbie Williams in my late 20s, when he was really big back in 2001, 2002,” Paul said.
“I was at uni, and when I sang swing songs, somebody said, ‘You sound like Robbie Williams’.
“And I’m like, ‘Who is Robbie Williams?’”
“I did a bit of research, and there was a tribute band looking for another singer to do Robbie Williams, and I auditioned and got the part.
“From then on, I thank the real Robbie Williams because he actually gave me a lot of confidence to get up and perform.”
Paul likes singing many of Robbie Williams’ lesserknown numbers and his ballads.
“I love singing Go Gentle,” Paul said.
“It is a great song, but it sort of never got anywhere.
“I sing No Regrets, that’s a little bit more well-known.
“Robbie does so many ballads that I can’t throw in every single ballad in a row when you want to get people up on the dance floor.”
At The Australian Robbie Williams Show, expect to be entertained with swooning, singing and dancing with the crowd fully involved.
The Australian Robbie Williams Show will be held at the Rich River Golf Club on Saturday, November 2 from 9 pm, with free entry, visit: www.richriver.com.au/events/

Spring market revamped
KYABRAM’S ANNUAL MARKET DAY IS HAVING A SPRING MAKEOVER, WITH A NAME CHANGE AND MORE ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDS.
Now called the Kyabram Spring Market, the day-long community market will be filled with family fun for all.
Tied in with the Kyabram RV Country Music Festival, the spring market encourages locals and visitors alike to shop locally in the lead-up to Christmas.
Kyabram Chamber of Commerce president Deanne Stagg knows that there will be plenty on offer up the street on the day.
“We are changing up the kid’s activities in 2024, with more family fun,” Deanne said.
“There is not really anyone to single out; quite a few different and varied outside traders are coming into town for the day.
“The service organisations will also be set up down the street so people can get information from them.
“There is a community, there are the local traders, and there will be many food choices from different businesses.
There will be giveaways at the market from participating businesses for vouchers to use over the weekend.
A highlight every year is the Kyabram traders holding sidewalk sales.
This year the sidewalk sales will continue from all day Friday and into Saturday morning.
Deanne hopes for good weather, which will always add to the event’s success.
“It is a good day, with all the people in town it adds to the atmosphere and that is a big part of having the spring market,” she said.
The spring market will be full of general and community-based stallholders with an eclectic mix of products such as honey, arts and crafts, plants, homewares, jewellery, handmade body and bath products.
Buskers will bring the sounds of the Kyabram RV Country Music Festival to the street.
A bus will run all day between the Kyabram RV Country Music Festival and the bush market to help bring visitors to the main street.
Along with the Kyabram Spring Market, the Kyabram Uniting Church will hold an exhibition and sale of Cam Tomfon’s photographs, with proceeds going back to the church.

Water ski racing gets up
BEEHAG 100 WATER SKI RACE IS SET TO RETURN ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16.
Beginning at the Torrumbarry Weir Boat Ramp, racers make their way to Will’s Bend from 9 am.
The return leg is scheduled to begin at 1 pm to finish back at Torrumbarry, clocking up 100 km in total.
The event was created in honour of the late ski racing legend Barrie Beehag, a member of Moama Water Sports Club, serving as director, treasurer and president in his 19 years.
In 2023, team Sapphire took the win, reaching the finish line in 39:01.31.
Their crew consisted of driver Tim Pickford, observer Brian Griffin, skier Lachlan Nix and Aiden Cuff. It is expected that more than 100 teams will participate in this year’s event, with entrants in last year’s event coming from across Victoria and NSW, as well as Queensland.
Ski racing is currently suspended due to an ongoing review by Ski Racing Australia, following consecutive fatalities in the sport.
However, Beehag organisers are confident the event will go ahead and have continued to plan for both Beehag and next year’s Southern 80.
The Beehag 100 will be held at Torrumbarry Weir Boat Ramp from 9 am on Saturday, November 16. For more information, visit: www.beehag100. com.au/

Discover rare classics
ROCHESTER MOTORING CLUB SHOW AND SHINE IS A VEHICLE SHOW WHERE YOU WILL FIND A BIT OF EVERYTHING.
Rochester Motoring Club president Merv Wild said there will be cars, trucks, motorbikes and possibly even a tractor or two.
“We call ourselves the Rochester Motoring Club, and vehicles over 25 years old qualify for membership,” Merv said.
“We have many and varied members, and we don’t have any restrictions on the club.
“In many other clubs, you have to attend x number of meetings per year or x number of events per year, but we decided that we wouldn’t have that restriction.
“We have 150 members and 169 cars registered in the club itself.
“We ran the show and shine in 2019, hoping to attract 100 cars and a couple of hundred people.
“We wound up with 360 cars and 1000 people.”
Merv has two cars in the club, including a 37 Oldsmobile and an EJ Holden Premier.
“The EJ has only 61,000 miles on it, so it is in pretty nice condition,” he said.
“Although it has been completely rebuilt because she got drowned in the floods in 2011.”
“I was just looking at the Rochester Motoring Club list, and we have everything from old Chevys on the list.
“We have an AJAX, which is an unusual one, a Bentley, we have a bit of everything in the club.
You can make the most of the day and examine all the cars, trucks, motorbikes and maybe a tractor or two, and there will be food vans and a market on-site.
Entry fee for all show vehicles is $5 entry, with a gold coin donation for entry to the public.
Rochester Motoring Club Show and Shine is made possible with the support of Campaspe Shire, Shannon’s Insurance, and the Community Bank Rochester.
Rochester Motoring Club Show and Shine, at Rochester 4Rs — Rochester Racecourse Recreation Reserve, Diggora Rd, Rochester on Saturday, October 19 from 9 am to 3 pm. For more information visit: www.facebook.com/ rochestermarket.vic.3561/

Click go the shears for a cause
THE ANNUAL MATHOURA SPEED SHEAR AND CANCER FUNDRAISER IS BACK IN THE SHEDS THIS YEAR.
The event raises money for the Mathoura Bra Fence, which is then used to support locals undergoing cancer treatment.
“It is a community event that has shearers turn up and enter a shearing competition,” Mathoura Speed Shear organiser Anna Robinson said.
“There are four events open, seniors, intermediate and women that shearers can enter.
“The prize money is not yet sorted, but it has increased in the open events.”
In addition to the four events, the Aussies will face the Kiwis in a Trans-Tasman battle of the fastest crew.
Speed shearing rules are simple: the quickest shearer to shear a sheep to ‘shed standard’ wins.
There is also an award and cash prize for the fastest shearer on the day across all the categories.
“In 2023, we had so many shearers that we started to run out of sheep,” Anna said.
“We had to limit the length of the contractors’ competition at the end of the day so as to not run out of sheep.
“The whole day was really just amazing.
“I’d like to thank the committee that helped put the day on, along with all the shearers that turned up to support the community.
“We had an amazing turnout last year.
“It was an awesome crowd, most likely the largest we have ever had.”
The day guarantees entertainment for all, with activities for the kids as well as food and drinks.
Registration starts at 9.30 am, with shearing from noon.
The Mathoura Speed Shear will be held at the Mathoura Recreation Reserve, Morris St, Mathoura on Saturday, November 2.
Catch carp to save rivers
HELP REDUCE THE CARP POPULATION AND ENABLE BEAUTIFUL NATIVE FISH TO THRIVE IN THE MAGNIFICENT LOWER CAMPASPE RIVER.
“For 10 years, we’ve held the carp catch at Strathallan Hall,” Strathallan Family Landcare member Veronica Groat said.
“People would come to the hall, but unfortunately, it’s going to be demolished due to flood damage.
“After the 2022 flood, we decided to go ahead with the carp catch and moved it to Rochester, right next to the bridge that leads to Kyabram.”
On the day of that Campaspe carp catch, Veronica reached out to Macca at ABC radio to spread the word.
Later, she headed into Rochester to gather supplies.
“I was in the IGA when I got a call from someone saying, ‘Hey, people are already gathering down by the river,’” she said.
“It was only 10 am, and we weren’t scheduled to start until 12. But we ended up with the biggest crowd we’ve ever had around 300 people.
“We had 250 people officially sign up, but with all the grandmas and grandpas, the total was closer to 300. It was wonderful.”
At the 2023 catch, 261 carp were removed from the Campaspe River between Kyneton and Echuca.
October is proving to be the ideal time for the event, as the female carp are full of eggs. “For the past 10 years, we’ve been pulling carp out of the river at the perfect time, when they’re loaded with thousands of eggs,” Veronica said.
“Each carp removed means thousands of fish that won’t be entering the system.”
The event features three categories: Under-10, under-16, and open, with support from Tackle World and VRFish.
The next Campaspe carp catch will be held on Sunday, October 20. Registration begins at 11 am, with fishing from noon to 3.30 pm at Rochester River Reserve in Rochester.

Young musicians to shine at showdown
THE GARGARRO BOTANIC GARDENS PRESENTS THE ANNUAL SHOWDOWN AT THE SOUNDSHELL, A YOUTH MUSIC COMPETITION FOR THOSE AGED BETWEEN 12 AND 18.
“It came out of the idea that there is not much opportunity for young people in the area to perform,” Showdown at the Soundshell committee member Lisa Smith said.
“There is a lot of music in Girgarre, but it tends to be with older people.
“So we decided to do something for younger musicians.
“We did it for the first time last year, it is called Showdown at the Soundshell.”
Each young person submits an application, including a link to a video of a previous performance.
If selected, they can perform one song or musical number.
“Every young person submits their application, then they perform a song,” Lisa said.
“Then the three judges do their thing.
“And the finalists come back for a showdown, they perform one final song.
“And out of the performance, the judges work out who the winner is.
“Last year, we had 19 performers.
“I think the youngest was 13, and we had singers, a band, a saxophonist, guitars, ukulele players, duos, everything you can imagine, keyboard players.
“The talent was from Moama, all the way down to Gippsland, down to Bendigo, across to Shepparton and even Melbourne.”
In 2023, first prize was $1000.
The format for the 2024 Showdown at the Soundshell is not set in stone until the organising committee knows how many applications they have.
“If we get a similar number of kids, we will probably do it as one day, but if we get more, then we will break it into age groups,” Lisa said.
“Last year, all applications got a spot at the showdown.
“The talent blew us away.
“It was really fantastic.”
Showdown at the Soundshell will be over the weekend of November 16 and 17 at the Gargarro Botanic Gardens Soundshell, Winter Rd, Girgarre.

Dip paddles in to raise funds
THE COURSE AND DATES FOR THE MASSIVE MURRAY PADDLE, FORMERLY THE MURRAY MARATHON, A FIVE-DAY RACE ALONG THE MURRAY RIVER, HAVE BEEN PROPOSED.
The race is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 18 in Yarrawonga and conclude on Friday, November 22 in Koondrook.
Competitors may opt to race on only one or two days, but those who take on the entire course will travel 415 kilometres along the Murray River.
Day three will see participants conclude at Moama beach, before racing on to Torrumbarry on day four.
“We’re up to our 55th running of the race, so we’ve (been) going on a ridiculously long time,” event organiser Shannon O’Brien said.
“Hopefully, this is going to be our big year postCOVID, post a couple of floods.
“We haven’t really been in the true spirit of the entire race for quite a few years now, which has been very difficult, but so far it’s looking really good.”
The event has a variety of options for paddlers of all different crafts and ability levels.
“The only thing that we require is that you use a paddle, whether it’s a kayak, canoe, rowing, even surf club boats, stand-up paddle boards, we invite pretty much everybody,” Shannon said.
“Based on that, we have a very good matrix of all the different paddlers over 50 years and how people paddle.”
There are also options to compete in teams or as part of a relay.
Along with the thrill of competition, the Massive Murray Paddle has also been a significant charity event over the years.
“We make it the prerogative of all the different paddlers to raise their own money for charity, and we just collate the amount and allow people to attach themselves to charities or local causes that are very close to their hearts,” Shannon said
Last year, Echuca Moama Canoe Club’s James Graham claimed overall race honours in the event.

“The ute competition is on again, with great prizes on Saturday and classic cars on Sunday.”

“The ladies running the pavilion are doing an excellent job; they look after all the ages and everything.”

“They can go on to bigger things like the finals in the Northern Districts shows and the VAS competition.”
On Sunday, showgirls and showboys will be on the lawn, along with a big pet parade.
In 2023, more than 300 doughnuts were eaten at the Saturday night doughnut-eating competition, with it returning in 2024.

“They help us with the printing costs and everything else we do.
“We look forward to everyone’s participation and hope the 2024 Echuca Moama Agriculture Show will be a huge success.”
