Welcome
If it hasn’t become apparent yet, I, the journalist who writes most of the What’s On each season, am not a local resident.
However, I frequently visit Echuca Moama and engage with all the region has to offer.
Feeling like I’m already there, at the Echuca Moama Steam Iron and Trades Revival with all the steam-powered machinery, vintage vehicles, and traditional trades on the King’s Birthday long weekend.
You will find me riding the miniature trains, dining on the damper, and keeping warm by a fire pit in the Steam Revival Hub, watching the night time fire twirling show.
At Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival, you will find me jookin’ and struttin’ away to the likes of 19 Twenty, 8-Ball Aitken and Lady Valiant.
I’m expecting to be enchanted by Moama Lights in the picturesque Horseshoe Lagoon.
Then, I’ll slip on some ice skates and take them from a twirl, finishing the night with a bite to eat and a beverage in the American Hotel beer garden.
Now for something a bit personal, I have been learning to run.
I will make my first public jogging appearance at Run Echuca Moama, where I will run the 5 km to raise funds for the Opening Doors Project.
Once I’ve had my fill of running, I’m heading to the Rich River Golf Club to watch and count back from 501at the 2024 Darts Pacific Masters and Australian Darts Championships.
I’m rounding out my winter visit with a drive up to cluBarham to grab dinner and a show, with the rock ‘n roll festival promising to teach me to dance the swing and jive.
See you all soon.

Steam-powered weekend
CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA’S RICH INDUSTRIAL HISTORY, THE ECHUCA MOAMA STEAM IRON AND TRADES REVIVAL IS ON THE KING’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND AT ROTARY PARK, ECHUCA.
The steam revival showcases various steampowered machinery, vintage vehicles and traditional trades.
There will be displays of steam traction engines, vintage steam engines, working Clydesdales, vintage classic cars, militaria, classic trucks, vintage tractors and sheep shearing by hand.
For those interested in lost trades, there will be leather carving, blacksmithing, operating the iron forge, rope making and many more.
Echuca Moama Steam Iron and Trades steam engine organiser Neil Hutchison pulls the steam engine collection together from far and wide.
“I’m an enthusiast, having had steam engines all my life,” Neil said.
“If you come to the rally, we will probably see half a dozen steam engine brands that have survived to today.
“I was brought up with them, with dad being right into them.
“He was a shipwright for many years, and steamboats and engines were the natural progression.
“When we were kids, we used to be so excited to get up to the steam rally every year, as it was just great back then.
“It was a great family affair, with many people and steam engines running here, there and everywhere.”
The revival pays homage to those days by celebrating Australia and the region’s rich industrial history in a family-friendly way.
The steam revival will feature the popular Schloss Toys, where people of all ages can make traditional wooden toys.
For the kids, face painting, an animal nursery, and mini railway rides will keep the younger steam enthusiasts amused.
The Steam Revival Hub will be activated all day with food trucks, fire pits and live music.
On Saturday, the Steam Revival Gala comes alive from 4 pm until 7 pm with live music, food, a licensed bar, an evening steam show, and a fire twirling demonstration.
With so much to see and do, this revival is perfect for families, history buffs and anyone who loves a little nostalgia.
Daily and weekend tickets are available online, as well as cash or card at the gate.
Echuca Moama Steam, Iron and Trades Revival will be held on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9, at Rotary Park, Rose St, Echuca. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.steamrevival.org.au
Rock it out at Echuca Workers
JOHN WOOD AND DAVE ALLEN: OUR ROCK AND ROLL JOURNEY IS DINNER AND A SHOW AT THE ECHUCA WORKERS CLUB ON SATURDAY, JUNE 29.
Long-time rock and roll singer and performer Dave Allen is one half of the act.
He met John Wood, famous for playing Tom Croydon on Blue Heelers many years ago when he was sitting in the front row of one of his shows.
“I first came across John when he was at a show we did somewhere,” Dave said.
“And I said to the crowd, ‘Geez, this bloke down the front here looks like John Wood.
“And the crowd is going, ‘It is, it is,’ and I’m saying, ‘Oh, it definitely looks like him.’
“Eventually, I got him up, and he did Johnny Be Good with me.”
John and Dave will harmonise from Rock Around the Clock to the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s to today.
“We have a parallel liking of music, with the things that he likes, I like,” Dave said.
“We were just talking away one day and said, ‘Let’s do a show about our rock ‘n roll journey.’
“We got together, and it all came together.
“The concentration is on music, it’s not on acting, it’s not on other things.
“John sings quite a few songs, and I sing a lot.
“John, throughout the night, talks about the different things that have happened to the artists, giving lots of general information, but there is not too much talking and plenty of dancing.”
The show includes numbers from Elvis, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, Bob Dylan, and Cliff Richard, as well as Australian classics from The Angels.
The Echuca Workers Club may host a meet and greet with a glass of wine with John Wood and Dave Allen on the night to chat about the show, with more details to come.
Keep an eye out on the Echuca Workers Club website for tickets for John Wood and Dave Allen: Our Rock and Roll Journey dinner and a show on Saturday, June 29 at www.echucaworkers.com.au/

Hit the green for par three championships
IF YOU WANT TO TEST YOUR SHORT GAME AND POTENTIALLY WIN SOME PRIZES, TEE OFF AT KYABRAM PARKLAND GOLF CLUB.
Kyabram Parkland Golf Club will once again host their par three golf championships for both men and women this June.
The women’s tournament will have 36 holes on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.
The men will play 54 holes on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.
The unique par three design and elevated greens, with hole sizes ranging from 124 to 219 metres, will test the players’ short game.
The men’s event started in 2005, and the women’s event started in 2006.
Since then, they have been a staple part of Kyabram’s sporting calendar.
Event organiser Naomi Cartwright emphasised the degree of difficulty of the par three championships and how they will challenge all golfers.
“The par three-course tests the short game. You don’t have that extra shot to play with, so you have
to be pretty spot on with your drives, and it’s not really forgiving,” she said.
“The uniqueness of the course certainly challenges those shorter elements of your game.”
Naomi was thrilled with the interest in the tournament and believed that the competition would have full participation.
Despite last year’s women’s tournament only fielding 50 players, Naomi and Kyabram Parkland Golf Club believe there will be double the number of players for this year’s edition.
“Our maximum field for the men’s event is 90; we normally get around that number yearly,” she said.
“The women’s event was in a transitional phase last year, with only 50 ladies taking part, but this year we are looking to double that, with entries so far looking promising towards that goal.”
Even though the tournament is open to amateur golfers, players have turned pro following the championship in the past.
“Any amateur golfer and all ability golfers can enter, and it’s a great course for any type of player,” Naomi said.
“Over the years, we’ve seen quite a few golfers who have turned pro, like Cameron John, Steffanie Vogel, and Zach Murray.”
With thousands of dollars of prize money up for grabs between both tournaments, including first place taking home more than $400, the excitement for the competition is palpable.
All the Kyabram Parkland Golf Club staff are working hard to make this year’s iteration of the tournament the best yet.
“Everyone is excited about the event, and the ground staff is working hard to improve and maintain the course to the best of their ability,” Naomi said.
“We are all quite keen to get it up and running again this year.”
Car club gets engines revving
ENGINES ARE SET TO REV AT THE NISSAN NIGHTMOVES TRIAL, WHICH WILL ONCE AGAIN RETURN TO HEATHCOTE FOR ANOTHER EXHILARATING EDITION.
On Saturday, June 22, the public will be invited to watch the event, run by the Nissan Car Club of Australia and sanctioned by Motorsport Australia, with cars new and old set to tear around a competitive distance of about 150 km.
Starting at Heathcote Showgrounds, heritagestyle cars from the 1970s and ‘80s including Ford Escorts and Datsun 1600s, will be in action, while some newer turbo four-wheel drive cars will compete.
The course starts in Heathcote, before making its way through the Redcastle, Rushworth, Heathcote and One Eye state forests, with roads closed for competitors.
The event is set to start from about 4 pm, with the rally expected to finish around 11.30 pm, with plenty of people expected to travel from interstate to catch a glimpse of the action.

Splash into swim challenge
DO YOU WANT TO SWIM THE DISTANCE OF THE SOUTHERN 80 IN A WARM INDOOR POOL WITHOUT LEAVING ECHUCA?
You can participate in the Campaspe Shire Council winter swim challenge at the Echuca War Memorial Aquatic Centre.
After the success of the 2023 Winter Swim Challenge, Campaspe Shire Council aquatic facilities co-ordinator Marcus Maher knows it is a terrific concept.
“You feel that in winter, the motivation to swim goes out the door a little bit, with the cool mornings and cold nights,” Marcus said.
“The Winter Swim Challenge is about encouraging people to come in and swim.
“Different methods of swimming suit different people.
“It could be people who are pretty new or getting back into swimming during winter.
“People who already swim once or twice a week just might want to swim that little bit extra, and many come in for another day a week.
“Or it might be people that already swim 10 laps a week, once a week, and want to try and improve their swimming and go that next step and do 20 laps.
“Everyone has their own internal goals, which they can work towards.”
The Winter Swim Challenge is also called ‘Swim the Murray’ and includes a map on the pool hall wall of the Murray River and how far people have travelled. Don’t worry — you are not expected to swim the whole Murray River over the winter.
The route is set within the Campaspe Shire boundaries, making it 100 km from Echuca to Torrumbarry along the river.
“Last year, we had one swimmer that made their way there (to Torrumbarry) and then started to make their way back to Echuca,” Marcus said.
“We had a husband and wife battling each other and others that increased their laps a little bit.
“In the end, health and fitness are important for all, and we felt that doing this challenge got people into the centre and created a competition for them to participate in.”
At the end of the challenge, EWMAC will have a prize draw for people who have visited a certain number of times over winter, including something for the person who swims the furthest.
For more information, drop into the Echuca War Memorial Aquatic Centre on the corner of High and Service St, Echuca or visit www.campaspeaquatics.com.au/Pools

FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS WINTER, THE KYABRAM TOWN HALL GALLERY IS EXHIBITING WORKS BY THE KYABRAM ART GROUP.
“This will be our very first exhibition, and for most of us, it will be the first time we have ever done this sort of thing,” Kyabram Art Group member Maria Radanov said.
“It is kind of special to us.
“We have been working on the exhibition for the last year and a half.”
Amanda Hocking, a practicing artist, runs art classes for the Kyabram Art Group in the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery community gallery.
“Amanda comes over once a week for five-week blocks,” Maria said.
“There are about half a dozen participants, and she runs the classes, facilitates the activities and gives advice on our artwork.
“We do acrylics, water paints and drawing.
“This is the third year we have been doing this, and most of the participants have been coming for that time.
The Kyabram Art Group is open and welcoming to new members who would like to learn to create art in any medium.
“We are just amateurs, some of us are beginners, and some of us are a bit more practiced,” Maria said.
“It doesn’t matter what stage people are at.
“It would be fine if they had never been into art before but wanted to try it.
“If they are well advanced and just want a support group, that would be fine too.
“We have got a broad cross-section of capabilities and interest levels.”
If you want to join the Kyabram Art Group, contact the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery.

Light up your nights
MOAMA LIGHTS IS AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED, THURSDAY TO SUNDAY NIGHTS FROM FRIDAY, JULY 5 TO SUNDAY, JULY 28.
Murray River Council’s award-winning Moama Lights will again light up the Murray with incredible displays from July 5, with tickets available to purchase now.
Set against the backdrop of Moama’s Horseshoe Lagoon, Moama Lights is a sound and light trail sharing stories from across the region through state-of-the-art installations, projections and cuttingedge moving light technology.
Running over four weekends in July, the festival will see the return of the popular ice-skating experience and the American Hotel beer garden.
Created and produced by world-class design studio Mandylights, this year’s theme, Enchanted Nights: A Celebration of Light, honours the captivating beauty of Horseshoe Lagoon.
Inspired by Banjo Paterson’s evocative poem The Daylight is Dying, the show will capture elements of nature that come to life when the sun sets, allowing the vibrant night-time ecosystem of the lagoon to shine through.
From illuminated ripples dancing on the water’s surface to the projection of children’s artworks onto the landscape, every element showcases tales of the bushland’s mysteries.
The event will see the return of spectacular Indigenous artworks crafted by the talented hands
of First Nations artist Warrick Keen and, once again, the brilliant Alkina Edwards, a contemporary Yorta Yorta artist from Echuca Moama.
Murray River Council Mayor Frank Crawley said this year’s event was not to be missed.
“The 2024 event is another brand-new experience celebrating the wonders of nature through an everchanging display of captivating colours, spectacular sound and amazing local art,” Cr Crawley said.
“We’ve also got the other festival elements returning this year, so we look forward to people enjoying the outdoor ice-skating rink, the American Hotel beer garden, food trucks and neon light installations all set up in the Kerrabee Soundshell area throughout the event period.”
Those keen to get their skates on can do so from Saturday, June 29, in Kerrabee Soundshell, just a stone’s throw away from the Moama Lights show.
Moama Lights is presented by Murray River Council and sponsors Moama Bowling Club, Rich
River Golf Club, Echuca Moama Accommodation Association and The Border Inn.
After multiple sell-out years, visitors are encouraged to get their tickets quickly, available now, along with further information at www.moamalights.com.au

Performers excited for Winter Blues
YOU KNOW A FESTIVAL WILL BE GREAT IF EVERY MUSICIAN TELLS YOU THAT THE LINE-UP IS FANTASTIC AND THEY CAN’T WAIT TO PERFORM AT IT.
That is the case with this year’s Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival.
8 Ball Aitken is one of those artists who can’t wait to perform in Echuca.
“We are going to play our party rock and fun stuff,” 8 Ball Aitken said.
“We will keep it interesting with different songs at different sets that will keep people returning for more.
What’s On
“I am bringing my cigar box and three-string slide guitar.
“Anyone who loves cigar boxes and slide guitars should check out my show.
“I love that a little box can make so much noise, a little cigar box.
“It will be so exciting to be back in Echuca playing the blues.”
8 Ball Aitken will play tracks from his Ice Cream Man and Swamp Boys albums at Winter Blues.
Asked who he was looking forward to hearing at Winter Blues, 8 Ball Aitken mentioned Corey Legg and an Echuca Moama Winter Blues favourite, 19 Twenty.
The blues rock band Lady Valiant is playing at the festival for the first time.
Lady Valiant singer Glenna Lynes is excited about playing Winter Blues.
“We have a lot of new stuff and we will be playing some new things in Echuca for the Winter Blues Festival,” she said.
“We are in the process of recording, so keep your eyes on Lady Valiant news, which we will update as we get things going.
“We have wanted to get down there to play for ages, so we are really excited.
“I just want to catch as many people as we can when we are not playing, and I want to meet people, I want to hear new sounds, I want to make new friends, new fans, I am seriously excited.”
One of Glenna’s recommendations for Winter Blues, like everyone, is 19 Twenty.
Lady Valiant is looking forward to catching up with Julian James as well.
“And not just to see people that we know, like we have seen Sweet Felicia and the Honey Tones a few times, and she is amazing,” Glenna said.
“I haven’t seen Marshall and the Fro, and they pop up when we have streaming stuff on and I am really keen to catch them as well.”
Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival will be held from July 25 to 28. For everything Winter Blues, go to winterblues.com.au/

Winter wildlife wonderland
SINCE OFFICIALLY JOINING THE ZOOS VICTORIA FAMILY IN OCTOBER 2022, KYABRAM FAUNA PARK HAS BEEN GROWING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.
Situated on 55 hectares of parkland and wetlands, the park is home to more than 350 animals including Tasmanian devils, quolls, dingoes, koalas, kangaroos, wombats, echidna, emus and southern cassowary.
A matriarchal meerkat mob is positioned beside the café, so you can view them while warming up with your morning brew before setting out for a wildlife adventure.
The expansive wetlands are a hive of activity yearround, perfect for bird noticers and twitchers alike.
A newly refurbished bird hide built among the trees allows for a unique 360-degree vantage point to see various native bird species.
At least 36 species of migratory birds visit Australian wetlands each year, with many travelling more than 20,000 kilometres to the Northern Hemisphere and back.
Among them are great egrets, nankeen night herons, brolgas and royal spoonbills.
It’s good news if your little ones love ducks too.
You can see Pacific black ducks swimming with their chicks, colourful red rumped parrots in tree hollows, and even endangered freckle ducks, blue billed ducks and musk ducks.
If cold-blooded animals are more your thing, then you must check out the new Reptile Habitat.
The climate-controlled habitats are home to stunning snakes, lizards and amphibians.
Kyabram Fauna Park general manager Paul Lavars said even prehistoric beasts have taken up residence, but may only be in town for a little longer.
“Dinos at the Zoo has been a huge hit with the community,” Paul said.
“The 16 animatronic, life-sized dinosaurs have to migrate to the Northern Hemisphere after the winter school holidays (July 14), so rug up and visit while you still can.
“Over the next 18 months we will be building new habitats and creating interactive spaces for families to learn about Zoos Victoria’s Fighting Extinction programs.
“We also have plans to improve amenities for guests, including new green spaces to have a picnic, seating areas and new paths.”
As part of the Victorian Government’s Kids Go Free program, children under 16 can visit Kyabram Fauna Park for free on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Ranch packed with activities
ENJOY A LEISURELY HORSE TRAIL RIDE THROUGH THE MAGNIFICENT RED GUM FOREST, FOLLOWING THE RIVER TRAILS, WHILE BUILDING A FRIENDSHIP AND SPECIAL BOND WITH A HORSE AT BILLABONG RANCH.
Billabong Ranch trail rides are suited to all ages and riding abilities, from seven years old and up. Those new to horse riding are instructed on basic riding skills, and if needed, a child’s horse can be led.
Billabong Ranch owner Kerri Acquisto has all the activities the ranch has to offer, running all through winter.
“Over winter, it is our normal opening hours, and then over school holidays, we are open every day,” Kerri said.
“We have a school camp that runs each school holiday.
“It is a horse-riding and activity camp.
“We get people from all over Melbourne and throughout NSW.
“We have been doing them for a long time now, so we have many kids who have come through from never having ridden a horse to working for us.
“And now we have their kids coming here too.
“We get everyone from those who want to learn to ride to those who have a horse but come for
the social side of it as well as being able to ride different horses each day.”
The Billabong Ranch is not just about horse riding. The ranch has a family fun park with activities for everyone, no matter your age or ability.
Choose from indoor mini golf, pedal boats, rock climbing, walking and feeding your favourite animals, playground, beach volleyball, table tennis, outdoor ten-pin bowling, frisbee golf, indoor archery, camel rides, bungee trampoline, merry-go-round and pony rides.
The fully licensed family cafe is open all day, so you can relax over a bite and beverage while the children enjoy the pedal boats or a pony ride.
Billabong Ranch holds school camps and school holiday camps and is ideal for large-group getaways. It can accommodate up to 160 guests at any one time in bunkhouse cabin-style accommodation, with onsite catering that can satisfy most dietary needs.
Billabong Ranch can also come to you with camel and pony rides, an animal nursery, carriage rides and hires.
Billabong Ranch is at the corner of Glanville and Tehan Rd, Echuca.

Tribute shows attract fans
THE BEST TRIBUTE ACTS IN THE COUNTRY PLAY AT THE RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB IN MOAMA, AND TUSK THE FLEETWOOD MAC TRIBUTE SHOW IS NO EXCEPTION.
Penny Jones plays Stevie Nicks in Tusk — The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show.
“We have played the Rich River Golf Club five or six years in a row,” Penny said.
“The crowd is fantastic, it is always packed, and it is always a good night.
“People go up and stay on purpose just to see our show.
“If you are after a fun night, that is what we are all about, with everything sounding great.”
Penny has been playing Stevie Nicks since 2011 and has run Tusk — The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show herself since 2015.
“I was a cover band singer all through my 20s, and one of our sound engineers said one day, ‘You sound a bit like Stevie Nicks at times. Maybe you should look at doing a Fleetwood Mac show,” Penny said.
“And I was 24 then and thought it was a joke.
“Then fast forward to 2011, and I joined an 80s show that had a side project of Fleetwood Mac.
“The minute the guitarist heard me sing, he said, ‘We can put you in our Fleetwood Mac show’.
“And I thought, let’s see how well I can sound like Stevie Nicks, how well I can actually do this if I give
it a try, and that was it, that was how the show came about.”
Penny’s two favourite Fleetwood Mac songs to perform are Edge of Seventeen and The Chain
“They are the most intense, impactful songs,” she said.
“I mean, Edge of Seventeen is just like an explosion of sound, and everyone hears it; they all rush up immediately.
“The Chain starts soft and builds up to a monstrous climax, and everyone sings and loves it.
“All the musicians in the show are incredible, the best of their kind.
“We haven’t scrimped on talent to deliver a different kind of show.”
Tribute shows coming up at the Rich River Golf Club over winter, with free entry:
• SOS - ABBA Tribute Show, Saturday, June 8.
• Tusk - The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show, Saturday, July 13.
• Queen Rocks - Queen Tribute Show, Saturday, August 31.

Church hosts special events
THE ECHUCA MOAMA UNITING CHURCH IS A PLACE OF WORSHIP AND HOSTS SEVERAL INTERESTING AND FUN ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR FOR VISITORS TO THE REGION AND THE COMMUNITY.
The winter Makers Market will be held on Saturday, June 8, including Devonshire teas by Loris and her team and a hot dog stall.
At the Makers Market, you will find a range of artisans selling lovely handmade wares, a cake stall and local produce.
The Echuca Moama Uniting Church has become nationally and internationally known as a venue for unique musical performances.
Broken Creek Band singer and fiddle player Erin
Heycox is ‘really’ looking forward to collaborating with the church in June.
“We would rather make music in a beautiful space, like a hall or a church, because we play acoustic instruments, and these rooms were built to house music and are where the instruments shine,” Erin said.
“They are our favourite gigs because we love that the audience is sitting and listening, and we can talk and tell stories, laugh and create that experience.”
Broken Creek band hails from Picola, playing folk music inspired by the Australian landscape of the border towns, using banjo, guitar, and fiddle, offset by Erin’s lovely voice.
With 50 years of singing together, the Victoria Welsh Choir’s performance in July will be memorable.
Victoria Welsh Choir member Garry Salsbury is one of three local Echuca members, along with up to 35 other members from around the state, who will travel to Echuca for the performance.
“We travel to different venues and do many country performances,” Garry said.
“We look forward to performing in a church, as the Uniting Church has fantastic acoustics.
“Anne Peace has done a fantastic job organising our performance and the many other performances they have at the church.
“It will be a mixture, but part of our constitution, if you like, is the maintenance of Welsh music.”
Harmony of Harps Pete Gibson and friends will be a performance from members of Harper’s Bizarre, mostly on Para-Celtic harps.
“Harper’s Bizarre are a group of dedicated harpers focusing on central Victoria,” Pete said.
Pete is unsure of the musical pieces performed at the Uniting Church as Harper’s Bizarre holds its annual harp camp in July, where up to 50 harpers learn new material that will be performed in August.
The Echuca Moama Uniting Church is at the corner of Hare and Pakenham St, Echuca.

More than a tribute band
WHETHER YOU’RE A BROTHER OR WHETHER YOU’RE A MOTHER, YOU’RE STAYIN’ ALIVE, STAYIN’ ALIVE, WITH THE AUSTRALIAN BEE GEES SHOW PLAYING AT THE ECHUCA PARAMOUNT ON AUGUST 9.
Australian Bee Gees Show founding member Michael Clift plays Barry Gibb in the show.
Luckily, he had some time before going on stage at the group’s Las Vegas residency to share details of the group’s visit to Echuca.
“We have been here (Las Vegas) for 13 years and been performing together for 28 years,” Michael said.
“We were doing our own music and not getting too far and there were a lot of tribute bands around Melbourne in the mid-90s, so we thought, let’s do something.
“Then we looked at what people weren’t doing and thought, ‘Why aren’t they doing the Bee Gees?’ because they are such a fantastic act, Australian, and all the songs are beautiful.”
After touring for five or six years, the tribute act started looking for United States-based agents, which led them to tour the US until they got the numbers to hold their own on the Las Vegas strip.
The Australian Bee Gees show performs from a modern perspective as if the group was still touring.
“We do the whole catalogue, not just the ‘70s disco, we do a lot of ‘60s, their ballads like To Love Somebody and I’ve Got to get a Message to You, we do all of those,” Michael said.
“And then songs from the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, right up into the early 2000s, just before Morris passed away.
“The show is two 50-minute sets in a theatre, and even that is not enough to fit in all of the popular songs, so we do some medleys, and in five minutes we might do 10 songs.
“For anyone thinking of coming, definitely come along, it is a good show, a Las Vegas show.”
The Australian Bee Gees Show, Echuca Paramount Cinema, Friday, August 9. Tickets are available at the box office or online at echucaparamount.com/movie/the-australianbee-gees-show
Early harvest olive oil stands out
RICH GLEN OLIVE ESTATE RECENTLY LAUNCHED ITS ULTRA-PREMIUM 2024 EARLY HARVEST EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL.
Produced for its amazing health benefits, this limited edition cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is the purest of olive oils with zero additives and a high volume of healthy antioxidants and polyphenols.
Early Harvest olive oils are, on average, harvested two months earlier than most other olive oils and pressed within four hours of harvesting to retain the nutritionally prized antioxidants and polyphenols.
Rich Glen’s 2024 Early Harvest is proving to be a standout.
Unlike most olive oils, the intense golden/green hue is truly unique and is why it’s presented in a bespoke clear bottle.
An intense grass-like bouquet and a herbaceous, peppery flavour linger on the palate, leaving you with a lovely warmth in the throat.
“Early Harvest is a unique olive oil that many of our clients seek out intentionally for its health benefits, taking it daily as a tonic or adding to all aspects of their food,” Rich Glen Olive Estate owner and creative director Ros Vodusek said.
Located 9 km west of Yarrawonga, on the Murray River’s rich organic soils and sandy loams, Rich Glen Olive Estate continues to build a strong reputation for quality EVOO products.
Now growing over 35,000 olive trees, this innovative Australian brand is reaching stores and homes across Australia while breaking into new international markets with its extensive array of over 195 gourmet food, skincare and wellbeing products, all EVOO-based.
Rich Glen’s annual Early Harvest is a limited edition EVOO with only 3000 bottles produced in 2024.
Rich Glen Provedore is at 137 Belmore St, Yarrawonga and 519 High St, Echuca, online at www.richglenoliveoil.com
Johnno’s Run changes name
THE COMMUNITY LIVING AND RESPITE SERVICE’S MAJOR ANNUAL FUNDRAISER HAS UNDERGONE A REBRAND, WITH THE EVENT TO BE KNOWN BY A DIFFERENT NAME IN 2024.
Johnno’s Run will now be known as Run Echuca Moama, with the event entering its 11th year of raising funds for CLRS.
CLRS chief executive officer Leah Taaffe said while the name had changed, the event would remain the same.
“We are trying to attract people to come to EchucaMoama to participate in the event,” Leah said.
“It’s about trying to make it really clear that it’s a publicly accessible event.”
The reason for the name change is to alleviate some of the confusion in the past and ensure the event is open to all.
“We received a lot of feedback from people that they didn’t understand it was a publicly accessible event,” she said.
“They thought it was someone’s run previously.
“So opening up the name … makes it really clear it’s open to everyone to come and participate.”
The event will continue to support the Opening Doors Project, a CLRS initiative to raise funds to build disability housing.
“The Opening Doors project is a project that we deliver that builds homes for people with disability
in our local community,” Leah said.
“It’s been running for 10 years now and we have in that time period delivered five projects.
“Those projects are providing homes for 22 people with disabilities in our community across four shared homes in 10 units.”
Run Echuca Moama will be on Sunday, August 4 from the Kerrabee Sound Shell in Moama, crossing over the Murray on both the new and old bridges.
It will once again offer 21.1 km, 10 km and 5 km options to run, walk or wheel. There will also be a junior event.
For more information, or to enter visit clrs.org.au
The club will hold multiple race meetings during the season, including a big event on Friday, July 26 to coincide with the Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival.
Echuca Racing Club Manager Jarratt Farley said he was excited about the winter season, particularly the meeting on the Winter Blues Festival weekend.
“The winter season is looking pretty good, particularly with the Winter Blues Festival race, which is one of our top four race meetings on the calendar,” he said.
“For that one, we have courtesy buses from town and music acts at the racecourse.
“It’s usually a great day and a significant part of the Winter Blues Festival.
“From a club perspective, getting that attendance and getting people out and about at the racecourse throughout the winter period to enjoy country racing is important.”
Echuca Racing Club has a range of quality facilities, including The Pavilion, an exclusive entertaining area that provides an array of dining and hospitality packages on race days.
“We’ve got The Pavilion, which can seat 400 people at any one time, so on race day, it’s a really good option for some people to come and enjoy,” Jarratt said.
“We always have dining packages available at The Pavilion, and for some of our bigger events, we have complete food and drink hospitality packages.
“Anyone who is interested can contact us at the office, and we can advise them about what packages are available on certain days, but there is always something available to book.”
Apprentice jockey Rose Hammond is expected to feature during winter after winning the Perricoota Station Handicap aboard Mr Saxabeat during the Echuca Cup race meet.
Jarratt said Rose would be a significant draw for crowds over winter and would be riding in the next few race days.
“Rose is a local apprentice who mostly rides for Johnstone’s, and she’s going very well at the moment,” he said.
“If all goes well, she will feature quite heavily in our winter events; she’s done a few rides in the city now, which is really good.
“She’ll be a drawcard for the locals over the winter period.”
Jarratt and everyone at the Echuca Racing Club are excited for the season ahead and keen to host locals and people from far and wide.
“Yeah, everyone at the club is really excited; we want to race,” he said.
“Whether it’s winter, autumn, summer, or spring, we are always keen to showcase our track and facilities.
“We hope that people can come and enjoy it.”

Snag a bargain in Stanhope
STANHOPE COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE MARKET AND CAR BOOT SALE IS THE PLACE TO SNAG A BARGAIN OR SAY GOODBYE TO SOME WELL-LOVED HOUSEHOLD ITEMS ON THE SECOND SUNDAY OF THE MONTH, ALONG STANHOPE’S MAIN STREET.
“We are adding to the variety of stalls with a car boot sale, where people can sell from their car boot and minimise the handling of the goods and books involved,” Stanhope & District Development Committee member Christine Dicketts said.
“We started it years ago to promote Stanhope, and I think we have. We do get quite a crowd coming through each month,” Christine said.
Excess funds generated from the market go to the emergency fund set up to support members of the community who have undergone trauma and need help.
The emergency fund has been running for as long as the market, and according to Christine, it helped quite a few families at that time.
There is live music each month at the market, a barbecue, and the local cafe, which is open for takeaway, roast meals, and coffee, along with a town favourite, the op shop, and the local supermarket.
Shaque-A-Taque on the main street features unique handcrafted woodwork, Australian décor, good old Aussie humour and locally handmade gifts and novelties.

Do the jive at river festival
ROCK BY THE RIVER FESTIVAL 2024, WITH A LINE-UP OF ACTS PERFORMING CLASSIC ROCK ‘N’ ROLL NUMBERS TO GET YOU UP AND DANCING, IS ON AT CLUBARHAM FROM AUGUST 22 TO 25.
Swing and jive to Uptown Catz, Alley Catz, DJ Angelo, The Zephyr Project and Jump ‘n’ Jive.
Everyone will be dancing to the bop, with dance lessons all weekend.
It will be the first time The Zephyr Project will perform at the Rock by the River Festival.
“We are a three-piece rockabilly swing jump rock band based in south-east Queensland,” The Zephyr Project frontman Neil Scott said.
“We have played together for over 20 years in various venues, from little town halls to festivals.
“And look forward to having a good time at beautiful clubs like cluBarham.
Zephyr is a European term for a cool breeze, but really, the band’s name came about because of a car.
“I particularly desired it, but my father would never let me have one because it would have been a chick magnet in its day,” Neil said.
“We ended up with an Austin Kimberly.
“It was every young man’s dream to have a Zephyr Mark 3.
“That is the origin of the band’s name, and of course, it is always a working project and a work in progress.”
The Zephyr Project is known for playing the quirky b-side covers of classic rhythm, blues and swing music.
“We do some very early Gene Vincent numbers and a couple of very early Ray Charles,” Neil said.
“Ray Charles does some lovely rhythm and blues sort of swing style songs.
“We don’t do the peppermint twist.
“We just go off course a little bit and dig up those quirky but very appealing numbers that people go ‘Oh, I haven’t heard that for years’.
“We get an absolute buzz out of doing these gigs.
“We get vicarious joy when other people are having fun, and hopefully, people are also having fun.”
Rock by the River Music Festival, cluBarham, from August 22 to 25. Tickets are available at cluBarham or clubarham.com.au/whats-on-atclubarham/

CAMPASPE VALLEY MINIATURE RAILWAY RUNS THE FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH, FROM MARCH TO DECEMBER EACH YEAR.
Campaspe Valley Miniature Railway Inc. president Colin McConnell has been involved with the miniature railway for 25 years.
“I got involved because I wanted to build a steam traction engine, and I needed to be a member of a miniature steam club,” he said.
“The only one in the area was the miniature railway, so that is how I became involved.
“Basically, for the last 100 years, people have been making little scaled-down models of things and looking for somewhere to run them.
“So, these little model miniature railways popped up around the country.
Over the King’s Birthday weekend, the Campaspe Valley Miniature Railway will run steam trains at the Echuca Moama Steam Iron and Trades Revival.
Tickets to ride the miniature train are available on the day at the ticket office at the Campaspe Valley Miniature Railway station, and tickets are cash only.
If you are under six, you will need an adult to ride the train with you.
You can find the Campaspe Valley Miniature Railway at Rotary Park, on the corner of Crossen St and Campaspe Esplanade, Echuca.
Miniature trains run the first Sunday of the month, March to December, from 10 am to 3 pm.

Time to gather the ‘iron’
THE AMERICAN IRON ECHUCA TRUCK
DISPLAY WILL RETURN TO ROTARY PARK
ECHUCA FOR THE 16TH YEAR ON THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 7 AND 8.
American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter president Tony Murphy said the Echuca truck display was the group’s main show for the year.
“The main aim of the club is to preserve the past for the future, that’s our motto,” Tony said.
“All these old transport vehicles and trucks are a part of Australian history.
“Because if we didn’t have the trucks, there would be nothing in the shops.
“Most of the members have club-registered trucks over 25 years old.
“We have trucks that date back as far as the early 1900s, and this Echuca display gives everybody a chance, when the sun starts coming out again, to come out and display their rigs.”
A vast range of trucks will be on display, not just American brands, even though the event is called American Iron.
“Then there are also English trucks like Bedfords and Commer and different trucks like that,” Tony said.
“There are various trucks, from light utilities to heavy trucks and road train-rated trucks.
“Several classic cars will be displayed, with the local car club bringing cars along.”
Before the display opens to the public, the American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter will gather at Echuca Bandicoot Brewing on Friday night for drinks and food for members and their families.
In 2024, the chapter will not be hosting an official dinner, opting to allow everyone to buy their meals at the Moama RSL on Saturday night.
A shuttle bus will run from Rotary Park to the Moama RSL for those staying with their trucks and wishing to have a few beverages.
Anyone who drives up to the gate in a rig to be displayed, entry to the American Iron Echuca Truck Display is free for you and your passengers. Tickets will be available to purchase for a day or the weekend for adults at the gate with kids under 16 free.

“We’re very lucky that we have so many accommodation venues that we can host the players and their families, and also, it’s really central, so we’re very lucky,” Echuca Moama Basketball Association president Lisa Baker said.
“It’s also a major fundraiser for us as well, and it’s in the school holidays, so you sometimes get
