SUMMER RECREATION IN FULL SWING Urban Outdoor Connection Engaging the Youth of Mecklenburg County This week, the Urban Outdoor Connection camp helped a group of 7-9 year olds learn the basics of exploration. The camp, which is based out of McDowell Nature Center, picks campers up each morning at Sugaw Creek Recreation Center. These campers, many of which are exploring the outdoors for the first time, get to participate in handson activities such as fishing (see photos), kayaking, hiking, creek walking, and outdoor cooking. Today, campers explored the prairie and made tie dye bandanas. On the last day of camp, they will explore Reeds Gold Mine for buried treasure! Funding for this camp including supplies and field trips is made possible by a partnership with the Arts and Science Council, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Partners for Parks.
