Who Will Be Top Dog at the 2014 Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival?

Dog lovers may cast votes online, April 7-21, for the “Top Dog” of the 2014 Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival presented by Purina and Harris Teeter.

Contestants submitted photos of their canine companions in March, and an independent panel of judges selected three finalists based on cleverness, originality and a written essay.

The “Top Dog” winner will be announced at the Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival. The winning dog will receive a year’s supply of dog food worth nearly $300 from Purina as well as ‘wagging’ rights for the entire year.

Bark in the Park this weekend at Rural Hill

The 2014 Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival is Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., at Historic Rural Hill, 4431 Neck Road in Huntersville. The festival is free to attend and features contests for dogs, vendors, performances by the Ultimate Air Dogs and much more!

NAIA Cross Country Partnership and Bid Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Department is partnering with the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority/Visit Charlotte to submit a bid for the 2015-2016 NAIA Men’s & Women’s Cross Country National Championships. The bid deadline is June 1, 2014 which is traditionally held on the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving. Sixtyfour (32 men/women) teams or 320 runners per gender and approximately 1500 fans will visit the selected city which could result in 500-550 room reservations. A 5K women’s course and an 8K men’s course with 4-6 finish line chutes and automatic timing equipment is required.

Register Now for the 17th Annual 'Rodney's Great Kids' Triathlon Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is now taking applications for the 17th annual “Rodney's Great Kids Triathlon” on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, 800 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m.

Last year more than 100 youngsters participated, both boys and girls. Organizer Rodney Sellars says that while lots of kids can run or bike or swim well, this event is designed so they have to do all three. “It's great fun and helps foster youth fitness,” Sellars added.

Advance registration runs through Friday, April 25 and costs $20.

Athletics Men’s Basketball B-League: Winter Playoffs On April 22nd The Men’s Basketball B League ended their Winter Playoff Games. There were a total of 6 teams that participated this season. Team No Limit Auto came out on top as the Champions of the Men’s B League with the win over team Mallard Creek.

Women’s Basketball Spring league will be starting on Sunday April 27 th at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center with nine teams participating in the league.

Co-Rec Volleyball league April 23rd Co-Rec Volleyball league BB winter season came to an end. There was a total of seven teams that participated in the league this season. A Really Good Team closed out the season with the championship win

The triathlon is held in the Aquatic Center’s pool and on streets outside. Competition in swimming, biking, and running stretches over a course with ageappropriate distances.

Separate competitions are held for boys and girls in age categories 8 and younger, 9-10, 1112, 13-14, and 15-17.

This event is named for Rodney Sellars, who has worked at the Aquatic Center as a supervisor since it opened in 1991 and has taught thousands of youngsters to swim.

Sellars began the Great Kids Triathlon as a way to get kids involved in a fun and healthy activity. He was named County Employee of the Year in 2007.

Intergenerational Egg Hunt Mallard Creek Recreation Center hosted the 3rd Annual Intergenerational Easter Egg Hunt for preschoolers and senior citizens. Nearly 100 preschoolers, children from spring break camp and seniors from the Senior Nutrition Program hunted for 1, 200 eggs. Additional activities included tattoos, games, crafts and visiting the Easter Bunny who had a treat for everyone.

Easter Egg at Sugaw Creek Recreation Center Approximately thirty (30) participants met Tuesday, April 16, for the Annual Easter Holiday Program. The kids had plenty of activities to keep them busy: arts & crafts, group games, Easter Egg Hunt, trivia games, giveaways and photos with the Easter Bunny. Community & Recreation Center Services Spring Break Camp at Tuckaseegee Recreation Center During the CMS spring break, Tuckaseegee Recreation Center offered a 4-H Film Making Camp. Campers had the opportunity to interview staff at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center, First Tee at the Revolution Sports Academy, and other various people around the county. The camp participants also learned how to edit the footage they recorded using the latest film making software. This week-long event lead to each camper presenting a mini movie that they created throughout the week to their peers.

Also during the spring break camp, campers were able to participate in another 4-H curriculum called, “Quest for Speed,” which teaches students how to build and operate race cars while using K’Nex (similar to Lego pieces). While building their cars each student had the challenge of using different pieces to create a source of power such as rubber bands, rubber propellers and/or balloons to power their cars. Campers were given the option to use other K’Nex pieces to personalize their cars as well. On the last day of camp, all the campers gathered in the gymnasium to race their cars.

Spring Break Camp at I/BRC Ivory/Baker Recreation Center held a Spring Break Camp April 14-18, 2014 with 12 children participating. Children took part in many activities including playing board games, active games in the gym, arts & crafts, looked for 4-leaf clovers (and made keepsakes of them) as we took a nature walk in the area. The campers went on a field trip to Latta Plantation Nature Preserve where Sarah spoke to the group about the different wildlife that lives in North Carolina and after lunch we walked on a nature trail and enjoyed being outside.

Mallard Creek Recreation Center celebrated Earth Day this week. The children truly enjoyed all their projects. During the art class children created an owl sign, reading “Give a Hoot! Don’t pollute!”, a paper bag Muppet trash bag and more. During the painting class children colored inflatable globes, ‘Family Tree’ frames carved from a wooden biodegradable flower pot and more. The children especially enjoyed a storytime reading of “If a Tree could Talk.”

Community & Recreation Center Services Mallard Creek Recreation Center Preschool Programs Mallard Creek Recreation Center hosted the second program in the “In the Woods Series� with Easter in the Woods. The program began by the children listening to the book The Easter Egg by Jan Brett. They learned about cardinals, robins, chickadees and their eggs. The children followed a trail into the woods to find Easter Eggs left for them in nests by the Easter Bunny. The trail led them to an Easter tree and eggs scattered for them in the meadow to collect. While on the trail they learned about mud as there was plenty left from the recent rain and they took the time to stop and observe all the new leaves that were growing on the trees. They were fascinated with the bird nests and they made their own nest from materials that birds would utilize. The program finished with them making their own eggs to take home. Hickory Grove Recreation Center Easter Egg Hunt On Saturday April 19, more than fifty (50) children ages 3-6 years did not let the rain stop them from dashing to collect a bunch of plastic eggs which contained candy and prizes. Before the Egg Hunt started, the children worked on Easter art and craft projects to get them excited about the big event. Over 20 golden eggs were found for extra prizes!

Community & Recreation Center Services Albemarle Road Recreation Center “Spring Break Camp”

Park and Rec will Offer Free Swim Lessons Beginning in May Beginning in May, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will offer free swim lessons for youth, ages 3-12, at Ray’s Splash Planet, 215 N. Sycamore Street in uptown Charlotte.

Swim lessons will be offered in monthly sessions and will take place on Saturday mornings.

The first session will cover May, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

Lessons will continue throughout the year.

During Spring Break, Twenty-three area youth between the ages of 6 and 14 participated in a sports camp at Albemarle Road Recreation Center . Throughout the week, campers were given the opportunities to be introduced to sports such as basketball, soccer, flag football, track and baseball. Coaches came out to teach basic skills, per sport, to enhance participants knowledge of the game. After learning the basic skills, campers competed against their peers. The participants were also given the chance to partake in a 4-H project “Rubber Band Powered Cars” which is also offered as interactive motor sports class. Families interested in participating in the free swim lessons are required to attend a preregistration event on Tuesday, May 6 at Ray’s Splash Planet. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Both children and guardians must be present at the pre-registration event. Applications will not be accepted after 6:30 p.m. on May 6. If applications exceed the number of available spots, a public lottery will be conducted.

On Friday, April 18th, Berewick Recreation Center hosted their 3rd Annual Easter Egg Scrambler Event for Preschool and Elementary aged children. There were 35 children in attendance, who also made Easter crafts, such as picture frames, magnets, and color scratch eggs. They also participated in an Easter egg hunt on our playground and took pictures with the Easter Bunny. The children and their parents had a blast at this special event. Easter Extravaganza @ Berewick Recreation Center!

Tuesday, April 22, 2014, Berewick Recreation Center partnered with the Afterschool Enrichment Program to provide a bonus Easter Event! Staff members Kimberly Golden and Richard McNeill held an ‘eggstra’ special Easter egg hunt on the playground and a few rounds of trivia questions to give away Easter Baskets donated by an outreach group. There was three age groups with over 60 participants. Children who collected the most eggs from each group as well as the children who answered the most trivia questions received filled “Easter Baskets” as prizes.

Ivory/Baker' s Mini Chefs The Mini Chefs class held at the Ivory/Baker Recreation Center made healthy and delicious Chicken Tacos and Ice Cream Sandwiches. The 6 mini chefs learned about Safety in the "Kitchen," the 5 food groups and "Choose Your Plate", how much of each food group one should have at each meal, before making their meals. Children (their parents) took home a copy of the "Choose Your Plate" coloring sheet and handouts to plan their next healthy meals, along with a copy of the recipes the children made.

Community & Recreation Center Services CMPD Hosts 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at I/BRC During the Spring Break, the Metro Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department hosted a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at the Ivory/Baker Recreation Center as well as had several guests speakers for the children and parents who attended on Friday, April 18. Over 75 participants attended this event. It was a great event for the community to come together and participate in.

Biltmore Blooms with MeckSeniors Forty-four seniors attended the Biltmore Blooms tour in Asheville, NC on April 16. The MeckSeniors enjoyed a self-guided walk through of the historical Vanderbilt House, reviewed the indoor garden display and visited the blooming gardens of tulips, orchids of all kinds, and various other flowers at their leisure. Seniors were able to relax and enjoy a meal on the Biltmore Estate property.

Community & Recreation Center Services I/BRC Celebrates Earth Day No matter the weather this past Earth Day, April 22, 2014, 36 volunteers came together for a Community Service Event at the Ivory/Baker Recreation Center. Volunteers mulched and re-landscaped the front and back of the recreation center in a matter of 6 hours total. Some of the groups/organizations that attended were from: FedEx, Southwest Airlines, a few UNCC students, the League of Conservation Voters (providing snacks and water), Direct Digital LLC (donated a shovel & planted a Carolina Jasmine), and Morris-Berg Architects. A BIG KUDOS goes out to Ken Carlson (Horticulture) for providing all the materials and Lori Saylor (Volunteer Services) for sending the volunteers to make this Earth Day a success.

4th Annual Hats off to Parks MAY 2, 2014 5pm-8pm To kick off the Inaugural RomareFest, Romare Bearden Park will host the Annual Hats Off to Parks.

Funds raised will help Partners for Parks, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and partners like you build a playground in memory of the youth and teachers lost in the Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy. Over 2,500 Volunteers will help complete the playground this October. Hats Off will feature wonderful food and desserts, cash bar, reverse raffle and entertainment by the Tams!

Therapeutic Recreation Therapeutic Recreation learns Curling The TR Section was invited by the Charlotte Curling Club to learn how to curl. Staff learned the fundamentals of curling and also learned how to use a pusher for Paralympic/wheelchair curling. TR is excited about a potential partnership with Charlotte Curling Club to start a Paralympic/Wheelchair curling team in the winter.

Therapeutic Recreation Youth Spring Break Camp The Therapeutic Recreation Section youth had a very busy spring break! They visited Lazy 5 Ranch, where they were able to take a hayride and feed a variety of animals. They also got to visit Dan Nicholas Park and ride a carousel and dig for gems.

Wrapping up the week was swimming and bowling! Campers and staff had a great spring break! School’s Out Club Youth is open to kids ages 6-12 with disabilities.

Residents Invited to Learn about Extension to Little Sugar Creek Greenway at Community Info Session Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation invites residents to learn about a 2-mile extension to Little Sugar Creek Greenway at a community information session on Monday, April 21, 2014.

The info session is at 6:00 p.m. at Queens University Sports and Conference Complex at Marion Diehl Park, 2219 Tyvola Road, Charlotte.

The 2-mile extension will stretch from West Tyvola Road through Huntingtowne Farms Park.

Aquatics Special Olympic Swimmers Two hundred eighty-four (284) Special Olympic swimmers participated in the local games at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Wednesday, April 23 from 10am – 2pm. The top 3 swimmers in each event will move on to the regional’s in Raleigh.

NC Select Camp Over a 100 of the best 14 and under swimmers in the state will participate in the NC Select Camp at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, April 26 - 27. Some of the best coaches in the state will work with the kids in both Short Course and Long Course settings.

Because of a partnership between Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, Storm Water Services, and Park and Recreation it only took a few hours to make a big difference to the appearance of the Berryhill Nature Preserve.

Volunteers gathered on a recent Saturday morning to clean up the preserve as part of The Great American Cleanup. They removed enough trash, recycling and debris to fill an eight -yard recycling can and 40 yard trash dumpster.

The Great American Cleanup is coordinated locally by Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful. The three-month long event started March 1 and runs through May 31.
