– Think back to your childhood summers at camp. The smell of fresh air, holding your first frog, and the first time you put a worm on a hook to catch a fish. Many of Mecklenburg’s at-risk youth don’t have the ability to afford this childhood “rite of passage.” However, you can help by supporting Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation’s Urban Outdoor Connection program. The program offers five weeklong nature-based summer camps for kids, ages 7-12, who financially qualify. Youth will enjoy outdoor adventure and education-based experiences such as kayaking, fishing, hiking, swimming in rivers and lakes, fire-building and much more. Park and Recreation is asking for your help in raising $9,550 to offer all campers partial scholarships in the amount of $360 per child. You can help the department reach its goal by donating to the camp’s scholarship fund today. The deadline to donate is Aug. 22. Partners for Parks will contribute $1 for every $1 donated to this project up to $4,775.
