Community & Recreation Centers Partnerships At Work @ Southview Recreation Center Southview Recreation has been proud to work with a variety of partners over the years. One of them has been the Senior Nutrition Program. Through that venture , we have been able to provide a cadre of programming opportunities.

One of those is called Seniors on the Move w/ Ms. Lyss, which is a combination of chair exercise and dance moves to the oldies and todays hits. Participants benefit from muscle movement and cardiovascular development. This program takes place on Wednesday @ 11am.

Community & Recreation Centers Berewick Recreation Center: Afterschool Programs This month at Berewick Recreation Center, Art Adventures and Lego Engineering are a hit for the students attending these afterschool programs. In Art Adventures-from making a photo frame to painting butterflies, wind chimes and boomerangs, and much more over the course of a month, we have the children bring out their creative side in this program. As well as Lego Engineering; where children can build whatever their minds can imagine using Legos. Staff also enjoy making projects too as they assist the children.

Community & Recreation Centers Elon Recreation Center: CMS Achieve 225 Recreation Centers for Mecklenburg County have partnered up with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System to offer Achieve 225. Recreation Specialists from each of the centers are visiting school sites once a week to help implement games and activities for grades K-5 to partake in during recess time. They are utilizing games from the well renowned Dr. Recess, who offers games that promote being active, a healthy life style, and honing emotional, motor, and cognitive skills. Each week our Recreation Specialist introduce new games into the curriculum for each school to follow. They get to interact with the children and help the teachers learn new ways to keep their students active during recess periods. The Recreation Specialist, Kelly Hawkins, from Elon Recreation Center is currently partnered up with University Park Creative Arts School. She visits the site every Tuesday and has created a great rapport with the school.

Methodist Homes Recreation Center: Juggling Club @ Shamrock Gardens Elementary In late September, Methodist Homes conducted a juggling demo at Shamrock Gardens Elementary during their Dragon Discussion general assembly. Through fun games and teacher participation, students had a great experience and were exposed to the potential program. Subsequent promotion resulted in the enrollment of 11 participants from the 4th and 5th grades for the 2016-17 program year. MHRC is proud to continue and expand the Juggling Club program concept which originated at Naomi Drenan and classes will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm at the school.

Community & Recreation Centers Naomi Drenan Recreation Center: After School Skate Session Naomi Drenan Recreation Center is starting their After School Skate Sessions at Grayson Skate Park. The program has started up for the fall and will run through November. We have live music played from a local teenager and instructors in the park to facilitate games/instruction/lessons as a part of the $2 fee! Stop by between 3:30PM-5:30PM on Fridays and shred with us, all skill levels and ages are welcome.

Community & Recreation Centers Naomi Drenan Recreation Center: School Out Basketball Camp On Monday, October 3, 2016, Naomi Drenan Recreation Center hosted their CMS “School Out Basketball Camp.” Naomi Drenan basketball camps are designed to bring out the best in young athletes ages 6-18 by focusing on an increase respect for sportsmanship, enhanced fundamental athletic abilities, and a deeper understanding of teamwork and responsibility as they prepare for school and college competition. With an exceptional staff, innovative games and drills, and world-class guest speaker, Chad Frazier, Naomi Drenan Recreation Center’s “School Out Basketball Camp” was an unforgettable experience for our young players.

Community & Recreation Centers Albemarle Road Recreation Center: Youth ‘N’ Motion A.R.R.C continues to hold Youth ‘N’ Motion – a youth program just for kids!

Youth 'N' Motion focuses on keeping kids active and moving. Through various activities and sports, kids will use both their mental and motor skills to keep them healthy. Youth 'N' Motion is open to any child in the community free of charge and class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 4:00pm- 4:30pm.

This week, we learned and played the game of Badminton!

Ivory/Baker Recreation Center – Nature Enrichment: On Wednesday, October 5, Shelby Harrison from Latta Plantation brought a box turtle named Sheldon to continue our program on animals and nature. The program is held every week. Participants to date have completed a nature scavenger hunt, learned about planting schedules, different kinds of birds, and weather.

Community & Recreation Centers Sugaw Creek Recreation Center- Educational Awareness Day Considering college but not sure where to start? If that's you, don't miss the inaugural College Education Awareness Day on November 5th at the Sugaw Creek Recreation Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The program will include college prep workshops and a college fair which will feature public and private college within North Carolina and South Carolina. The registration deadline is November 4th. This is a free program for middle and high school students. Parents are welcome. The day will kick off at 10am.

Sports & Fitness and GC/ALMS Wednesday Night Fights Former Boxing World Champion and Nevada Boxing Hall of Famer, Christy Martin presents Championship boxing at the Grady Cole Center on October 19th.

The main event will feature Charlotte’s own Quinton Rankin (11-3-1, 8 KOs) and a fighter to be determined. The co-feature of the night will be an NABF Flyweight title match between Rosalinda Rodriguez (4-0, 1 KO) and Naomi Bosque (10-7-2, 2 KO’s). Doors open at 6:00PM.
