For the Rookie

To find out what version of Microsoft Windows operating system you are using look no further than the bottom left corner of the screen. The Windows logo called the Start button has changed design with different versions. Looking at the Start button will help you determine what version you are using. Most computers and devices in the District will be using Windows 7, 8, or 10. Windows 10 is the newest version. You can compare your Start button with the images here to determine your version.

Cool Tool www.ProCon.org With this free website, students can prepare for debates, research topics for essays, and read nonpartisan information about controversial issues that is nonbiased. Teachers and students can become more informed about issues in the news. Teacher’s Corner on the website is found at the top right corner which includes Common Core aligned standards for lesson planning and suggestions from other educators how to use the website and reading material in their classrooms. Going Pro with Your Surface Pro Do you have Windows 8? Does your Start Screen look like this? Full of apps and tiles you didn’t put there and won’t ever use?

Well, fixing that is easy! Just click on the Windows logo in the bottom left corner or the Windows button on the bezel frame on the device to get to the Start Screen that has all your tiles.

Step 1: Find a tile you no longer want. For example, the large, green Store tile. Take your finger and press and hold on the tile until your screen looks like the image above.

Step 2: Now with your finger press on the “Unpin from Start” icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Going Pro with Your Surface Pro Adding tiles you do want is just as easy!

Step 1: On the screen with tiles, in the bottom left corner click on the arrow pointing down or you can swipe the screen with tiles up with your finger to get to the All Apps area. Step

Step 2: Find an app you want, and press and hold down on it with your finger

Step 3: Then, with your finger press the “Pin to Start” option located at the bottom of the screen. Viola! The app is now added to the tiles on the Start Screen for easy access.

Dear Askie the Techie, Which version of Outlook should I be using at work? – Lost in Email Dear Lost in Email, There are three different Outlook programs you can use for work. (1) The first one is the Outlook Desktop version that is usually an icon on the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. The Desktop is the fullest featured of the three. (2) The other version is Outlook on the Web within Office 365 that you can get to by going on the Internet at home or work to this website http://portal.office.com. Outlook on the Web is the easiest way to check and send Email from any device with Internet access. (3) The third is Outlook Mobile App for both Android and Apple devices. Is there an easier way for me as a teacher to change the student password for them to login to the computer at school when they forget? – Upper and Lower Case Dear Upper and Lower Case, Thanks for asking. There is a new way to change student passwords that allows the teacher to create an easy to remember one for students to login and then the student is able to make their own secure one. Check out this video on how to do it
