A Note from the Publisher

y goal of this magazine was multi-fold with the heart being to promote local vendors. I wanted boise vendors and mccall vendors to synergistically be able to work together. The last few months have been a beautiful transition of that very thing.I am so grateful for each of our mcwEd partners for promoting this project and for promoting the mccall area. I am a fourth generation mccall resident. I can safely boast that I am a local. Embarking on a project that was going to benefit my community was very rewarding for me mcwEd is committed to help guide inspire and connect individuals with resources and planning assistance to promote wedding and events in the mccall area. I need to thank Heidi wight not only did she come onboard creatively with me and step up as a business partner, but she became my friend. Heidi suffered a great struggle in the moment I needed her the most for this project. In the midst of her hurt, I became the most demanding. In the depth of her sorrow, I buried her in work and my list of needs. Heidi has spent the last few months pushing through the sadness and difficulties that have been placed before her and she went forward on this project. It was not only the true test of character but it was a lesson in friendship brandi, I appreciate your creative spirit. I love your willingness just to “do” on this project. I loved that I needed to give very little direction and you just created. I am excited for the growth of mcwEd and to have you as part of this dream my parents I love you more than words! Thank you for believing in me. To every mcwEd partner who took a gamble in the beginning not knowing how this would look and play out. THaNk yoU! Now let’s go paRTy!!! ImagE: Todd NIcHolS I have known brandi Reiland for 4 years, and I am honored to write about her not only from a professional standpoint but as friends. I’ve always admired brandi’s attention to detail in her work and the level of excellence she provides to each of her clients. brandi represents each of her brides with a creative approach to each of their styles and personalities. Through a busy schedule with work, family and a new baby, brandi always makes the time to invest in her industry. as an editorial writer for mcwed, readers can always expect to find creative and innovative ideas and concepts that will set new trends for events and weddings. brandi and Soirée excel in amazing weddings.... I’ve had the opportunity to work along side her in the past and have coined her the “wedding genius.” I love watching what she will come up with next and I know you will too!

The menu is finalized, décor settled, and you’re giddy about the vendor team you’ve put together for your wedding day. You couldn’t be more confident that each and every detail will go off without a hitch and your vision for the day has been all but realized at this point. But what about the vision you have for yourself, as a bride on the wedding day? Sure you found the dream dress, but have you taken the time to ensure that you are pampered, powdered, and that you will look and feel like a bride on your wedding day? Most will agree that one of the most important aspects of the wedding day and budget will be the photography. Your memories will be frozen in time and that alone is reason enough to regard it so highly. And for this reason, so many brides put a lot of time and effort in making sure their flowers, décor, and attire are perfect so that their pictures reflect the day beautifully. However, in the midst of details, timelines, and color palettes, way too many brides forget the most important (and by far the most photographed) detail of all: themselves. Though some may consider it a luxury service on any other day, they really should reconsider the idea of hiring professional beauty artists for their hair and make up, a necessity for the wedding day. These artists not only make you look beautiful for the most important day of your life, but they are also experts in enhancing your features for photo purposes. Have you ever experienced a photo shoot where once the photos came back you were less than impressed? More times than not it’s the way you feel about how you look in those photos rather than the photography itself. Makeup artists will work with your complexion, your unique features, and work with you on your vision of yourself for the wedding day. Bohemian beach bride? Iconic blushing bride? Or maybe city glamour all the way. Each look will take an expert to pull it off properly, while using industry tricks to ban photo spoilers like shiny foreheads or washed out complexions. Your makeup artist will also know when and how to amp up a feature- like eye shadowand when to tone things down- like bronzer. In short: leave the ratio and beauty formulas up to the experts for the photo-ready looks you’re dreaming of. Your hairstylist will be your go-to hair taming goddess. Armed with the right product to hold the perfect coif, create the most dramatic curl, and keep things looking shiny and healthy all evening long. Whether it’s extensions you desire or a sleek updo, these hair pros know it takes a little extra industry power to help your strands hold for what will be a full day of photos, dancing and merriment. Your beauty team is made up of pros who will enhance your photos, finish off the vision you have for the wedding day, and give you some of the best memories- because often times a bride doesn’t feel like a bride until she’s been pampered like one. Take the time to meet with and browse through portfolios of these beauty professionals. Ask questions, indicate your vision and point out any areas of concern you have. Referrals for reputable beauty pros by your wedding planner are a great place to start; for example Soiree even offers a beauty concierge program that allows you to meet with a beauty consultant who will then match you up with hand-selected artists that will best facilitate the look and feel you’re after. A trial run will ensure that you are both on the same page and that you’re in love with the end result and you can feel comfortable knowing that even the most natural of beauties can be camera ready on the big day. ersonalize your wedding Detail By Detail

pHoTo: ampERSaNd STUdIoS

E

very bride dreams of their wedding at some point- whether it’s right after they become engaged or right after their third birthday- and ensuring it is beautiful and elegant is usually at the top of the list. But more and more brides are putting more emphasis on infusing personality into the wedding, and we couldn’t be happier about it. You can deck your party out to the nines with décor and flowers, but if you haven’t put elements of you into it, your guests just won’t get the same impact or the experience. The fact is, your guests are attending your wedding to celebrate a new union on the surface, but underneath it all they are celebrating you both and your new lives to come. After all, it was your unique backgrounds, hobbies, and interests that brought you together in the first place. By incorporating bits and pieces of your stories into the wedding, you not only create a highly personalized occasion, but you also instantly bring comfort and familiarity to your guests, which automatically lends to an incredible experience. So how do you personalize your wedding with style? Here are some of our favorite ways.

Start with Lifestyle How you live your life is the key to designing your wedding- it embodies so many details. Take a look around your house- would you describe it as clean lined and modern? Or are you more of a shabby chic girl? Do you find yourself happiest surrounded in lots of color, or do neutrals calm you and bring a smile to your face? And look at how you live your lives together- do you love going to the farmers market every Saturday? Maybe

34

a farm-to-table style menu would be perfect for you. Many brides make the mistake of trying to make their wedding into something they’re just not; a pink and green wedding for a bride that wears mostly classic neutrals probably isn’t going to make you as happy as a serene olive and espresso palette would have.

Incorporate Hobbies and Interests Are you movie or literature buffs? Or maybe cycling is your favorite activity. Don’t be afraid to add nuances of your favorites into your wedding. They can be big or small details, from a small graphic on a table number to having something incorporated into your centerpiece design. We’ve seen vintage style maps used as part of invitations for a travel-loving couple and personalized whiskey bars as a nod to a spirits lover in the family. The more you let your guests peek into your lives together the more of an emotional experience you’ll create for them.

Represent the Locale If you’re planning a destination wedding, consider introducing your guests to elements that represent the location. Maybe it’s a certain type of food or wine the region is known for (Huckleberry in Idaho, anyone?) or maybe it’s keeping the design and décor in line with your surroundings- an outdoor lakeside wedding might not mesh too well with gigantic ballroom-style centerpieces. Welcome gifts are a great way to give your guests a glimpse into the location you’re inviting them to- gift them with some necessities for the weekend like water and snacks, but include some region-specific goodies with a note explaining the significance. Using local vendors and resources will ensure an authentic welcome package and set the tone for the weekend to come.

Pay Attention to the Menu Food is one of the highest experience-building elements of a wedding. Remember that people eat with their eyes first. Planning your menu to match your style, interests, and party dynamics is so important, but is unfortunately often overlooked. Food is also one of the easiest ways to personalize your wedding; a southern bride might have mini shooters of homemade gumbo as an appetizer, and grandma’s famous recipe for cookies would never go unnoticed by your guests. A surprise late night snack comprised of the bride or groom’s favorite fare goes a long way- and we’ve seen everything from Krispy Crème donuts to taco bars to hot dog stands. Or maybe having a menu that represents where you both grew up- your guests from various regions will love trying out new things. And finally, consider how you want your party to feel and flow. Do you want everyone mingling all night, or would you rather a more intimate dinner party feel? How the food is served will make a big impact on the experience so discuss your options and vision for the wedding with your caterer before deciding on a menu. et against breathtaking views of pines and rolling hills, Jennifer and Thomas’s wedding was all about rustic sophistication. Wed at the Jug Mountain Ranch in McCall, Idaho, thoughtful details invited guests to experience a relaxed yet refined evening, perfectly speaking to the bride and groom’s tastes. A tent draped with burlap played host to the couple’s nuptials and set the youthful, on trend look for the rest of the event. Burlap could be found on the reception tables, boutonnieres, as well as the brides’ bouquet, paired with a pallet of sunny yellow, black and silvery green succulents. Keeping with the fun vibe, graphic elements such as chalkboard art, marquee letters and chevron textiles were used in just the right places.

“When looking for a venue to host our wedding, we wanted a setting that encompassed the natural aspects of the state we both love: Idaho. Thomas and I met when we both moved to Idaho and we grew to love experiencing its outdoor lifestyle together. Jug Mountain Ranch in McCall became a very special place to us as we enjoyed its mountain biking trails, beautiful golf course and untouched rustic setting. Thomas proposed on one of our favorite hikes at the ranch, making it the perfect location for our big day. Thanks to David Carey and the crew at the ranch, our wedding was the nothing short of perfect.” -Jennifer, Bride 38

fter a long 7 years in the making (5 ½ of which was long distance), Caitlin and Monty’s McCall wedding finally came on a warm September Saturday. Once the proposal happened, planning was in full swing- just six short months from start to finish. In addition to the short timeline, the couple spent their engagement apart too- Caitlin living and planning from New York while Monty working in Texas. Though the bride is a southern belle after having grown up in Louisiana, her family always considered McCall a second home. Monty quickly became familiar with the town as well, and it was a no brainer to hold their destination wedding in the lakeside town. Once the planning was underway, Caitlin knew she wanted to introduce their guests to the natural beauty of Idaho while infusing the day with all the charm and hospitality she had grown up with in Louisiana. The first step was to choose a location within McCall to host the celebration- and they couldn’t decide on just one, but instead chose three! The Long Valley Finnish church had the quaint, southern feel the bride wanted for the ceremony. The wooden church pews were adorned with simple bushels of baby’s breath as the wedding party walked down to an acoustic guitar ensemble. From there guests made a quick trip down the road to the barn at Historic Roseberry for a grand Idaho welcome and cocktail hour. Possum Livin kicked off the festivities with bluegrass folk tunes while guests noshed on Idaho-meets-Louisiana treats such as chicken and sausage gumbo and Idaho fingerling potatoes.

40

Finally the guests settled in for the reception at Shore Lodge, enjoying dinner and mingling over views of the Payette Lake. The room was an equal mix of romantic and rustic with hanging votive candles, wood box centerpieces filled with a variety of

ethereal flowers, and mercury glass. Signature bride and groom sips, state shaped cookies (Texas, Louisiana, and Idaho), a surprise late night snack of sliders and fried chicken, and a live band not only kept the guests up all night, but ensured that no one would find it difficult to feel like they were right at home. The whole weekend was a labor of love and successfully married high style with southern charm. The bride, a graphic designer in New York, designed and printed all of the letterpress stationery from the save the dates to the invitations to the menus and programs, while a calligrapher hand scripted the escort and place cards. Guests were welcomed to the weekend with a sweet basket of Idaho goodies and a pie soiree, and a farewell brunch was the perfect ending to a perfect three days in McCall. The entire celebration embodied Caitlin and Monty as a couple, honored all of the places they had lived both together and apart, and McCall proved to truly be a magical setting for it all. This is why McCall was the perfect backdrop for their summer wedding and hopefully a reoccurring setting for the future they will share. It is as if fate brought these two together. Bridgette did much of the planning herself with the help of family and friends and of course Adam lent his hand as well. Adams mother surprised the couple with a Luau for their rehearsal at Rupert’s restaurant located in Hotel McCall. Family and friends gathered to begin festivities with delicious food prepared by Chef Gary Kucy with a little island flair. The wedding day could not have been more blessed. The sun was shining and it was PERFECT in every way. The wedding day was full of perfection in everyway. The flowers were by Flora and were designed to fit the brides style and showcase the couples taste and personality. They were sophisticated and elegant yet fun and naturally beautiful. The night was topped off with Adam, the groom taking his turn as the drummer of the band. Overall a spectacular day caught with amazing images from Two Bird Studios as well as an amazing video which truly tells Adam and Bridgette’s love story.

Corry and Mike

THE BEST OF MCCALL, ID

orry and Mike’s story begins as if out of a book: One day the cowboy living in California decides to go skiing while a city girl from Chicago decides to frolic with her friends at the Sundance Film Festival. Fate intervenes and their two worlds come together at a local watering hole where she steals the cowboy’s hat and his heart. A custom hat sent to Corry by Mike, a bi-coastal relationship, and a total of 18 months later, the two would be married in gorgeous McCall, Idaho with 80 of their closest family and friends. The setting for the weekend was Mike’s family estate on the Payette Lake. With many of their guests coming from larger cities, the couple wanted their wedding to be a true destination wedding filled with lakeside activities and the best of what McCall has to offer. Save the dates were the first glimpse into the weekend and allowed a peek into the subtle City Girl meets Cowboy theme for the weekend-The cowboy hat and famous red-bottomed shoe became a signature monogram and was seen on everything from the invitations to the smallest details at the actual wedding. Guests were welcomed at the Boise airport with private cars and shuttles, and once up in McCall each guest received a welcome gift that represented both Mike and Corry, including his and her shot glasses 44 and specialty tequila (Mike’s favorite), fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies from Stacey Cakes in McCall,

black licorice, and a weekend itinerary, all packaged up in a cowboy hat for the guests to wear for the weekend. The welcome party on Friday night was a cocktail cruise on The Idaho along the Payette Lake, followed by a southern style BBQ dinner on the beach of Mike’s family cabin. This evening was meant to be relaxing and low key so beach games, swimming, and homestyle faire enjoyed on picnic tables with wooden utensils were a welcomed start to the weekend ahead. The wedding day featured a ceremony along the lake, underneath a custom arbor made from tree branches. Large logs filled with hydrangea, cornflower, dusty miller, freesia and white tulips lined the aisle and lent an elegantly rustic vibe to the setting. Corry, in her ethereal Vera Wang gown, processed down the aisle to join her cowboy and their children to the strums of an acoustic guitar. At the end of the ceremony, the entire group turned and tossed their cowboy hats in the air in celebration of the new Mr. and Mrs.

The city girl meets cowboy theme was continued through the reception décor for the evening with the soft blue hues of the linens and flowers and delicate white capiz shell chandeliers rustling in the wind proving to be a beautiful match to the rustic wooden centerpieces and burlap touches. The couple chose a menu filled with their favorite foods, including a live sushi chef and mini pizzas. Two live bands and a DJ kept the entertainment going all evening long starting with one of Boise’s favorite bluegrass ensembles for the ceremony and cocktail hour, followed up by The Aspen Creek band, flown in from Dallas for true

cowboy flair. A Shot-ski served as the couple’s guest book and was a nod to the first night they met; and finally, the night rounded out with a fireworks show over the lake, something the bride has wanted since she was a little girl. The weekend in McCall finished up with a brunch at the Shore Lodge before guests traveled back down the mountain to get back to real life.

eath had a great year. He had landed the first in history double front flip at the Xgames clinching the gold medal. He was on top of the world and just when life couldn’t get any better he got to marry the woman of his dreams. It was a warm July day with deep blue skies and big puffy clouds a perfect day even when the quick rainstorm moved through the beautiful valley. Nothing could put a damper on Heath and Linnae’s amazing day. Heath and Linnae enjoy the recreation aspect of McCall and frequently visit and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Choosing McCall to enjoy the week with their friends and family was the perfect decision. “Heath and I met in the summer of 2009 through some mutual friends in Butte, Montana at an event called Evel Knievel Days. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we wanted to spend our lives together. We dated long distance between Montana and Idaho then got engaged in the summer of 2011. When wedding plans began, we discussed a destination wedding but wanted our family and friends to be able to attend. We decided that McCall was the perfect destination

as the destination was only 2 hours from our house! We both share a love for the inviting little town of McCall. Between the cute little shops, delicious restaurants, and the pristine scenery- we knew it was the perfect place to have our wedding. When we look at our wedding pictures I always notice something new and beautiful. I know it is in large part because our photographer, Lindy, who knew exactly how to capture the beautiful essence of not only our love but the beauty of McCall. Our ceremony by the lake and our reception tucked in beneath the mountains, we could not have asked for a better backdrop for our wedding day. We even got to see a rainbow during our first dance as husband and wife, if that isn’t good luck, I don’t know what is! The best part about the location of our wedding is that we only have to take a short drive to relive those wonderful memories all over again! We absolutely love McCall and all that it has to offer.”

rundage Mountain Resort has been part of Colbi’s life since she was a child. Her family is very dear friends of the founders of the beautiful resort and so upon her engagement to Daniel Twiss it was no surprise where they chose for their exchange of vows. Dan and Colbi complement each other perfectly. Dan quickly became involved in every step of the process and was overjoyed in how it turned out. When Colbi was describing her dream wedding she continually stated she wanted to dance under the stars. The dance floor was strategically placed on the deck out at Brundage mountain so that the full beauty of Idaho’s starry skies could be taken in as they danced into the night. Colbi’s invites were very unique and included a mock up map showing that the ceremony would take place on the summit of Brundage Mountain. The invite packet also included a matching “What to do in McCall, Idaho” for the out of town guests. Considering the out of town guests is crucial to maximize the enjoyment for everyone. Colbi and Dan’s love for each other was clear from the moment they started planning throughout the entire event. It truly was a magical evening. Colbi and Dan now proudly reside in Boise Idaho where they just recently welcomed their first child into this world. They will of course continue to frequent McCall and their children will also grow, taking in the beauty of the Payette Lake and the majestic mountains at Brundage Resort.

T

HE DIFFERENCE

Wedding Planners, Designers and Venue Coordinators

H

iring the right professionals to make up your vendor team can make all the difference in your planning experience, but in their quest to find the right person for the job many brides become confused at the choices within all of the titles. Do you need a designer? A planner? Or what if your venue already has a coordinator? It’s important to know that there is a definite distinction between each of these roles and becoming educated on the roles these wedding pros play will save brides from a lot of frustration as their planning progresses. Wedding Planner

52

A wedding planner is your go-to logistics pro. The planner is the one that will take your vision and event needs and effectively build your wedding day from the ground up. Budget creation and management, contract negotiation, timeline building and implementation are all ways a wedding planner will put the foundation into place to ensure you are on track and avoid any potential “fires”. Using your budget as a guide, he or she will also refer or hire vendor professionals to be a part of your wedding day dream team- the ones that will create the dynamics and flow unique to you and your wedding. Above all else, your wedding planner should be someone you can use as a soundboard, seek advice, and trust to guide you to the right choices for your wedding.

Wedding Designer A wedding designer is the pro that handles all of the amazing aesthetics of the wedding- the way the event will look and feel, from start to finish. A designer will work with you to hone in on your likes and dislikes, style, and help you to find ways to infuse your personality and unique details into the wedding. This wedding pro will have the tools and team to bring your dream to fruition- ranging from party rentals, linens, lighting, furniture, flowers, décor and even custom built items- and the expertise to weed out from the vast array of choices in the industry to present you with options that work with your style and budget. The designer’s role is to take your vision and expand on it, creating a well-curated, highly personalized and perfectly styled event that will amaze you and your guests. A Note on Planning and Design Services Wedding planners and designers often work together to ensure the most cohesive result for the wedding. However, it’s important to note that it is the industry-wide standard to contract these services separately, even if within the same company, and here’s why: Both services are extremely time consuming, labor intensive, and require full time dedication to be done correctly. By combining the two inclusively, there is bound to be details left out of either process, leading to frustration or lack luster results. No matter what, both planners and designers should be able to provide proof of continued education to ensure they are on top of trends and standards worldwide. Venue Coordinators A venue coordinator is often an employee or sales representative for the venue. It is their job to know the ins and outs of the property, and will handle your lease or rental agreement to reserve the venue. From there it is their job to manage all aspects having to do with the venue’s agreement with you- from staffing, to rental hours, communication with you and your planner/designer, and sometimes even overseeing food and beverage services and banquet orders if catering is provided in-house. What a venue coordinator won’t be able to do is manage or negotiate contracts with your vendors outside of the venue, build a timeline outside of your scheduled hours at the venue, or assist you with any other aspects of planning not related to your ceremony or reception venue. In short, the venue coordinator is there to assist you and your wedding professionals to ensure questions are answered, rules and regulations of the property are adhered to, and everything on the venue’s end is in order to ensure a seamless flow on the wedding day. S

upporting Students The Ins and Outs of using “kids” on your most important day

I

n January, I stopped by the McCall Donnelly High School’s softball booth at winter carnival and tasted a beautifully decorated cupcake that tasted decadent. Imagine my surprise when I found out they were made by a student. Quickly, I learned that Hannah Carter was in fact only 14. The amazing confectionary genius behind the cupcakes was a “little girl”. Skillful artistry and delicious, it was a wonderful combination. Photo: River’s Edge Photography

Frequently it is suggested in wedding blogs and articles to save money by hiring a student. Hiring students often occurs in the field of photography and is frequently followed with a sad tale of disappointment. As an event professional referring students is often frowned upon because of the disasters that often follow hiring a student. If you take a prudent approach, hiring students may provide a wonderful treat for guests. Choosing to support students comes with risks. Here is our quick advice on incorporating students into your wedding day.

1. Doubts? Don ’t do it. 2. Talk to other professionals. 3. Do a test run way before your big day. 4. Don’t simply hire a student to save money. 5. COMPLETELY and fully understand your risks. Wedding Professionals are experts because they have spent years developing their trade. Occasionally though you do have “Hannah Carters” come along that have a passion and a gift. When mcWED asked Hannah if she had always wanted to bake cupcakes? She delightfully responded, “No, I’m going to be a surgeon.” Before Hannah heads off to medical school we get to enjoy her baking. She is one student who you can trust and safely incorporate into your event. With the help of her mom and living in a home with five sisters they can get the job done. We are delighted to have Cupcakes by Hannah as a mcWED Partner. “cupcakes by Hannah” is for birthday parties, weddings, showers, and other events. Hannah we hope you continue to follow your dreams.

(If you know of a student looking to work in the event field please contact mcWED. We would love to link them to intern positions, job shadowing and more)
