Who We Are Marking nearly seven decades of Making Cancer History®, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is located in Houston on the campus of the Texas Medical Center. It is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. The Texas Legislature created M. D. Anderson in 1941 as a component of The University of Texas System. The institution is one of the nation’s original three comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971.
Mission The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

Patient Care In Fiscal Year 2009, more than 96,000 people — over one-third of them new patients — sought the high-quality care that has made M. D. Anderson so widely respected. Of those patients, more than 11,000 participated in clinical trials exploring novel treatments, the largest such program in the nation.

Noteworthy: • M. D. Anderson is accredited by the Joint Commission, the organization that ensures that patients receive the best and safest health care possible. • Our nursing program holds Magnet Nursing Services Recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. • For six of the past eight years, including 2009, M. D. Anderson has ranked No. 1 in cancer care in the “America’s Best Hospitals” survey published by U.S. News & World Report. • M. D. Anderson provided $266.9 million in unsponsored charity care to Texans with cancer in FY09.

Noteworthy: • M. D. Anderson ranks first in number of grants awarded, including 12 Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants, and total amount of grant dollars from the National Cancer Institute. • The Red and Charline McCombs Institute for the Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer is composed of seven centers focused on genomics, proteomics, screening, diagnostic imaging, proton therapy and drug development.

Education More than 6,300 trainees, including physicians, scientists, nurses and allied health professionals, took part in educational programs at M. D. Anderson in FY09. The institution awards bachelor’s degrees in seven allied health disciplines and, in collaboration with the UT Health Science Center at Houston, awards M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In addition, thousands of health professionals participate in continuing education and distance-learning opportunities. M. D. Anderson also provides education programs for healthy individuals, those at risk of cancer, patients, survivors and caregivers.

Noteworthy: • Accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools affirms M. D. Anderson as a major teaching institution. • M. D. Anderson is ranked among the Top 40 Best Places to Work for postdoctoral fellows, according to a 2009 survey conducted by The Scientist magazine. • Of FY09 trainees, 30 percent were full time and the others came to the institution for varying periods of time.
Prevention The Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at M. D. Anderson continues to set the standard in cancer prevention research and the translation of new knowledge into innovative, multidisciplinary care for patients, survivors and people at average or elevated risk of developing cancer. Through pioneering research in the causes and origins of cancer, behavioral science, clinical cancer prevention, comprehensive cancer control and health disparities, the division is dedicated to eradicating cancer through prevention. The Cancer Prevention Center provides cancer risk assessments, screening exams based on genetics, age and gender, personalized risk-reduction strategies, chemoprevention and nutrition counseling. The Behavioral Research Treatment Center provides a comprehensive tobacco cessation program through customized treatment plans that include counseling and nicotine replacement therapy.

Noteworthy: • The Duncan Family Institute for Cancer Prevention and Risk Assessment was established through a $35 million donation from the Dan L. Duncan Family Foundation, one of the two largest gifts ever to the institution. • The division’s research training program for pre- and postdoctoral students has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1992.
Staff M. D. Anderson employs more than 17,000 people, including nearly 1,500 faculty. A volunteer work force of about 1,300 contributes more than 200,000 hours of service annually, equal to 100 full-time employees. Together they work toward fulfilling M. D. Anderson’s mission of eliminating cancer as a major health threat.
Noteworthy: • M. D. Anderson has been recognized as a top employer for workers 50 and over (American Association of Retired Persons), and for programs supporting alternative work arrangements (City of Houston, Houston-Galveston Area Council) and alternative commuting programs (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).
