A Home : A Sanctuary A place where LIFE blooms

“„

Talking about Architecture “I do not believe architecture should speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind. “ “A living space should be a sanctuary. It has to be a place where you can reflect on your life. When one arrives home, there’s a very tranquil feeling.” - Tadao Ando

A home is a place where we feel the most connected on a personal level. Where we can carefreely sit on the floor even though there are chairs and couches nearby ready to serve! It is a place of relief and relaxation after a hectic day from the office, college, or school. I visualized a home as a cozy and open space at the same time. It will give the right amount of exposure towards the exterior while keep spaces to retreat and reflect as well. This is a residence for a family of six members. The parents - Martin and Susanne and four children, three sons and a daughter - Luis, Leo, Anton, and Ella, in order of older to younger.

The site on Betpfad 3 is a dreamland to live in and raise children. Being a hilly site, and greenery on all sides I wanted the project to celebrate this beautiful bond of the site with nature. I used some interesting transitional spaces, a fountain, a garden, a playground, a swimming pool, and an open deck for a playful flow of connection between the interior and exterior spaces. Children feel the happiest where they can run and play around and release their energy. In terms of form, I wanted to keep a very simple form in terms of function and visual appearance. I started with three blocks of private, mixed, and public functions in terms of zoning. I introduced an angle between the forms so that it can follow both the site alignment and the North-South alignment. To achieve this, I introduced a fifty-degree angle between the two blocks. The Eastern block has all the private functions while the Western block has all the public functions. And there is a triple-height shaded deck along with a special family stair. On the first floor, this connecting block becomes a bridge connecting public and private.

In terms of site and surroundings, this location has a north to south slope of about more than three meters. On all four sides of the site are cover with greenery and foliage. And because of the slope, in spite of these trees, the beautiful panoramic view towards South - Eastern side becomes open. A part of the bank of the main river can be seen from here. Such a site free of many constraints of usual sites inspired me to use all of the site forces as much as possible. For example - this site is open to the sun because there are no big structures around except for some trees. I opened the home towards the southern side to allow maximum light, air, and ventilation while keeping the openings minimum in the northern side. This arrangement will help to sustain heat during winter times and keep the house cool during summer times. Also, trees with heavy foliages are used near the pool area to ensure privacy and some shading from the sun. Architecture is not complete until it is lived in. I believe this home can hold all the family members dearly throughout its life.

Some Basic Information

Private zone

Mixed zone

Public zone

Project: Family residence Location: Betpfad 3, 97082 Würzburg, Germany Site area: 2000sqm Floor area: 447sqm Number of stories: 2 stories & roof garden

Form Generation

EAST- WEST ELONGATED FORM (PUT ON THE SITE AXIS, AWAY FROM TRUE NORTH)

SO THE DECISION WAS TO USE BOTH THE SITE AXIS AND THE TRUE NORTH AXIS.

Three Design Parameters Playfulness

Achieving Playfulness t hrough introducing interesting transitional spaces between indoor and outdoor spaces.

BUILDING MASS DIVIDED INTO THREE ZONES: PRIVATE, MIXED AND PUBLIC

THIS FORM WORKED FINE WITH ALL THE REQUIREMENTS, BUT COULD NOT ACHIEVE THE PANORAMIC VIEW

TWO CUBES OF 3.5MX3.5M WERE TAKEN, ONE FOR PRIVATE ZONE AND ANOTHER FOR PUBLIC ZONE. AND THEY ARE PLACED SIDE BY SIDE. THE PIBLIC BLOCK AXIS REMAINS THE SAME TO ACCOMODATE THE ENTRANCE WHILE THE PRIVATE BLOCK IS ROTATED 50 DEGREE ACCORDING TO TRUE NORTH WHICH ALLOWS BETTER SUNLIGHT AND VIEWS FOR THE BEDROOMS. AND THUS WE GET A SPACE IN THE MIDDLE OPENING TO THE BEAUTIFUL PANRAMIC VIEW OF THE HILLS.

Clean Formal Expression

Neat and Clean Formal Expression through use of primary shapes, humble materials, neutral colors.

Using Natural Forces

Using Natural Forces available in the site such as Sun, Views, Air flow, Trees, Slope.

The Symphony of Inside and Outside The main structure of the house holds the primary functions like sleeping, working, cooking, eating etc while the secondary functions like playing, relaxing, walking, swimming, gardening etc flows throughout the site.

The playful transition of space from interior to the shaded deck and finally to the exterior open deck flows through beautiful green pathway towards the fountain and finally towards the playground situated in the southern part.

Home Office Interior Design Home offices are becoming more common recently specially because of the Corona situation. This office area located on the ground floor of the house features a working desk, a lounge chair, two waiting chairs, a stand for product display, a two seated sofa, a storage stand, and a center table.

This design holds all the amenities of a modern home office with a view of the water feature and playground in front of the house. At the same time this space is segregated from the rest of the house with an L shaped curved curtain channel which separates the office from the rest of the house when needed.

Master Bedroom Interior Design This master bedroom belongs to the parents of the home, Martin and Susanne. It is furnished with a king size bed with bedside tables, an entartainment stand with storage space, a walk-in cabinet integrated with the room, and a feature slit window along with the bed.

The design of most of the furniture are inspired by mid centure furniture design. The sleek volume, clear off the ground with narrow legs - these interesting features are kept while mixing a modern minimalist twist. This room resonates a harmony between the old and the new.

The Water Feature : The Fountain A home in such a site should flow outside. To hold the serenety and essense of this place a fountain is introduced in front of this house. There are low and high seating arrangements. One can sit down on the floor of the deck with legs in the water or sit on the bench. The sound of flowing water along with the greenery and chirping singing birds, wind will mix with the feelings of the beautiful panoramic view of the hill. A rustic green stair comes down from the open air deck to this fountain where one can seat and relax, enjoy the evening.
