farewell from the ambassador partners like InvestKL and MIDA, decided to showcase Malaysia’s potential in The Netherlands. The event took place in The Hague and attracted more than 100 Dutch private entities and was hosted by the very influential Dutch employers association. A similar event, called the ASEAN Business Dialogue, took place recently in The Netherlands. It shows that promoting Malaysia’s economic potential in The Netherlands is complementary to the efforts, and requires the strengthening presence of MDBC in The Netherlands.

Dear MDBC Members and Friends, Farewell MDBC A solid and balanced relationship All good things come to an end, like three years of an exciting and pleasant assignment in Malaysia. Working closely together with MDBC and the Dutch and Malaysian private sector is one of the highlights of my stay. Having more than 200 members is a reflection of the solid economic bond between our two countries. It started in the oil and gas sector, with Shell having been here for more than 100 years, and it has developed into the wide presence of Dutch-related companies in all kinds of sectors such as electronics, semi-conductors, agro-based industries, business services, consultancy, maritime and logistics. Another feature of this relationship is that Malaysia has established itself as a significant investor in The Netherlands. Companies like KL Kepong, IOI and Sime Darby have invested in down-stream activities based on palm oil. One could speak of a truly balanced economic relation; Not many people know that for the Dutch economy, Malaysia is an even bigger economic partner than Indonesia. Another Level In the last three years, the cooperation between MDBC and the Embassy has reached another level. After the tragic event of MH17, the Embassy, in close cooperation with MDBC and Malaysian

Government-to-Government visits of Prime-Minister Rutte and Minister of Agriculture Dijksma underlined increasing political cooperation in support of the economic performance in the private sector. In 2014, former Prime-Minister Balkenende, in his capacity as chair of the sustainable growth coalition (of which all Dutch multinationals are members), gave insight into sustainable entrepreneurship that will also shape the economic development agenda of the Malaysian private and public sector for the coming years. The future MDBC has developed into a strong business network organization and is considered to be one of the most active bilateral business councils in Malaysia. It is my strong wish that on this solid foundation it further widens its scope in the coming years. This means a chamber that is able to introduce new services to its members, for example identifying jobs for partners of expatriates, enlarging its very successful student internship program, providing match-making for

incoming trade missions and identifying new business sectors in Malaysia where Dutch businesses have a competitive edge: water in the broader sense of the word (e.g. flood control, water management), bio-based economy, green technology, waste treatment, solutions to a circular economy, just to name a few sectors. In this respect I am happy to see that MDBC has re-joined the EU chamber (EUMCCI). A full membership of the EUMCCI, as a chamber of chambers, gives leverage on lobby challenges and issues to be discussed with government. The ‘evergreen’ (bi) annual MDBC Sustainable Awards event is more than ‘business as usual.’ Supporting CSRactivities of companies will definitely continue to be on the agenda of MDBC in the years to come. It requires the input of all members, as well as the Board and management of MDBC. I invite all MDBC members to join and support the Orange Factory, the KL edition on circular economy, this coming September, in conjunction with the MDBC Sustainability Awards. Thank you Let me conclude by thanking the MDBC and in particular Executive Director Marco Winter, its members and the Board for all its support and cooperation for the last three years. I foresee a bright future with a growing Dutch economic presence in Malaysia in the coming years. MDBC is an unmistakable partner on this journey. H.E. Harry Molenaar Netherlands Ambassador

cybersecurity & risk consulting The world has become increasingly interconnected. The significance of the internet and the world wide web means that almost all organizations now have an online presence, whether it’s via a website or social media platform(s). In this electronic era, more people search online for the products and services they need, often making purchases in cyberspace. It also means that frequently there are new headlines about hackers bringing an organization to its knees. Stolen funds, leaked accounts, bad publicity, and embarassing revelations are front page news. How do you manage your organization’s cyber risk? How can you protect your organization from these issues?

MDBC Connects FAIR brings business development to the members While the MDBC membership community already brings a lot of business development opportunities, MDBC followed the advice of our members in the recent membership survey that more is better and decided to organise the inaugural MDBC Connects Fair at the Orchid Ballroom in PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur. Perfectly timed as part of our 20th anniversary celebrations this year, and to show our commitment to increasing the value proposition to the members as part of our MDBC Strategy 2016 - 2018, the Fair turned out to be a great way to showcase the wide variety of service providers available within the MDBC community.

The MDBC Connects Fair proved to be an excellent new initiative under MDBC’s Strategy 2016 - 2018. The Fair provided exposure and plenty of business leads to the members!

With free admission to all and hosting nearly 50 service providers, attendees were able to sit down with the exhibitors and discuss in one - on - one consultations their direct business needs. It was the ideal place for visitors to find the right service providers to help them start a new business venture, launch a new product / service, or set up a new project. An overwhelmingly positive experience, all participants indicated new business leads from the Fair. Most also already indicated an interest in the next edition! For many more photos of connections being made, please see page 43.

Tastes of europe fest 2016 The Tastes of Europe Fest (ToEF) remains one of the most popular events to celebrate and share the cultural diversity of Europe. Exhibitors at the ToEF (including MDBC members Albatross Exim, Uhrenholt, and Glory International), presented and offered samples of an assortment of products ranging from cheese, bread, herring, and chocolate, to wines, liquor, beer, and uniforms for the hospitality industry. The ToEF, now in its 15th edition, remains a unique opportunity to discover exactly how important gastronomy is in European cultures. This was reflected in the diversity and depth of flavors available in the wide range of offerings, thanks to the 30 exhibitors who participated.

Panelists (l to r): Pranab Choudhury, H.E. Harry Molenaar, YAB Lim Guan Eng, YB Chow Kon Yeow, and Andrew Chan.

Organised by the MDBC in collaboration with The State of Penang and investPenang, the Briefing by, and interactive dialogue with the Hon. Chief Minister of Penang YAB Lim Guan Eng on “Penang’s Transport Master Plan - Update & Implementation” took place at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang in April.

adopting a balanced approach for public transport and highway improvements. In his keynote address, the Chief Minister spoke on the overall Transport Master Plan (TMP) vision, and the interaction between State and private sector required to make the TMP a reality. The central premise of the State’s strategy is simple – which is to “move people, not vehicles”.

In its endeavour to create a highly liveable, economically vibrant and socially inclusive community in Penang, the Penang State Government has identified three major concerns that need to be addressed – Crime, Cleanliness and Traffic Congestion. Through continuous efforts, significant progress has been achieved in reducing crime, improving public safety, and in upkeeping a clean, comfortable environment. Nevertheless, traffic congestion still remains a primary concern exacerbated by the dynamics of economic growth and influx of tourists to our vibrant heritage city – a case of the State becoming a victim of its own success.

YB Chow Kon Yeow (Penang State Exco’s Local Government, Traffic Management & Flood Mitigation Committee Chairman) and Andrew Chan (Director of Group Business Development in Gamuda Berhad; Gamuda is a partner within SRS Consortium, TMP’s project delivery partner), provided an update on the latest developments of the various parts of the TMP, namely Public Transport Network, Highways & Roads, Penang South Reclamation (PSR) Master Plan, and Implementation Program. They also provided details on technical issues and on actual business elements such as upcoming tenders, business opportunities available for the coming 1 - 3 years, and the expertise required.

To meet the challenges ahead, the State commissioned a Transport Master Plan Strategy Report with an aim to improve the State’s present transport system by

in large reclamation works. Both he and Netherlands Ambassador H.E. Harry Molenaar also took part in an interactive panel discussion which was held after the presentations, to share Dutch experiences in infrastructure and transport. AN INSIDE LOOK: HEINEKEN MALAYSIA - HANS ESSAADI Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of Heineken Malaysia Berhad (formerly known as Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB)), who graduated from Hotelschool The Hague with a Bachelors degree, has been the Managing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia since 1 March 2013. Having worked with HEINEKEN since 1991, he has served in various capacities across several different business units and regions. As HEINEKEN Malaysia celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, a couple of significant changes were underway – including a name change which occurred on 21 April 2016 (Guinness Anchor Berhad was renamed Heineken Malaysia Berhad now that Dutch brewer Heineken NV holds 51% interest in the company), and access to an impressive brand portfolio (HEINEKEN has more than 250 best – selling brands around the world). HEINEKEN Malaysia, as a result, would also enjoy access to HEINEKEN’s world-class systems and processes as well as best working practices. MDBC: A brand is a promise of the value you’ll receive. What effect do you think the rebranding to HEINEKEN Malaysia will have? HE: Heineken Malaysia Berhad will continue to be the country’s leading beer and stout company. In fact, we will grow our brand value even more significantly as we are now part of the HEINEKEN Group. This means we stand to benefit from the access to world-class commercial and best market practices from HEINEKEN. HEINEKEN worldwide has more than 250 brands of beer and cider. As we open up to a world of new business possibilities by becoming part of the world’s most international brewer, we are also opening up a world of exhilarating experiences to our partners and consumers. We will be guided by HEINEKEN’s values which are repre-

sented by Enjoyment, Respect and Passion. We shall focus on brewing greater enjoyment for life with brands that people love. Above all, we shall strive to deliver greater results driven by HEINEKEN’s signature passion for quality. MDBC: This is potentially an opportunity to reinvent / reinvigorate HEINEKEN Malaysia. Do you think it’s necessary? If so, in what way will it be different? HE: Allow me to say that we have experienced exciting growth in the Malaysian market for many years, enabling us to build award-winning brands. The corporate rebranding is timely and fitting as we further align with the identity of the global HEINEKEN Group. This change will be instrumental in elevating our company even further in terms of international standards and best practices. We aim to continue winning in the market place by being consumer-inspired, customer-oriented and brand–led. In an evolving market, we will prioritise innovation to meet changing consumer needs by producing exciting products paired with exhilarating experiences. We invite all our partners and consumers to join us as we go from great to greater in this new era. MDBC: A lot of the focus is on how the rebrand to HEINEKEN Malaysia will affect customers, but what about the employees? What changes will this rebranding have on HEINEKEN Malaysia as an organization? HE: Our human capital has always been our most important asset. We are aware that our growth in the last 50 years as GAB were largely due to the passion and dedication of talented Malaysians who made the company a household name. At HEINEKEN Malaysia, our people will continue to come first and we will continue the proud tradition of continuing to make this com-

“The corporate rebranding is timely and fitting as we further align with the identity of the global HEINEKEN Group. This change will be instrumental in elevating our company even further in terms of international standards and best practices.” pany a great place to work. MDBC: And what about the other brands in the portfolio? HE: Our vast portfolio of award-winning brands will benefit from HEINEKEN Group’s world-class marketing practices. As you know, Malaysian consumers are more discerning and open to new experiences as they become more affluent and exposed to global trends. HEINEKEN Malaysia is well-positioned to cater to the Malaysian consumer’s demand for differentiated alcoholic products now and in the future. MDBC: What effect do you think this will have on HEINEKEN Malaysia’s competitors? / Performance in the market? HE: We do not comment on the competition. We can however state that HEINEKEN Malaysia will continue the tradition of bringing exciting, high-quality offerings to our consumers. MDBC: HEINEKEN Malaysia has won previous MDBC Sustainability Awards. The most recent one was for ‘Best Sustainable Supply Chain Management or Logistics Project’, which HEINEKEN Malaysia won for the development of clips which could be attached to existing partitions in transportation crates. This enabled HEINEKEN Malaysia to retain the existing transportation crates after the introduction of the first returnable Heineken bottles in the Asia Pacific region. In what other ways is HEINEKEN Malaysia trying to innovate and grow (sustainably)? HE: We are continually looking at our impact on sustainable development as part of HEINEKEN’s Brewing a Better World program. One example is the recycling of our old bottle crates and using the recovered plastic to produce the new replacement crates. HEINEKEN Malaysia focus

AN INSIDE LOOK specifically on energy and water in supply chain. With an eye on keeping our environment secure for future generations, our Energy Saving Programme (ESP) has been a high priority since 2009 in keeping utility resources’ consumption (electricity, thermal energy and water) as low as possible without compromising the quality of our brews. Some key highlights recorded through the ESP included electricity consumption recorded at 10.69 kWh/hl, a savings of 6.2% exceeding the target of 10.92 kWh/hl while thermal energy usage fell to 86.74 MJ/hl with a savings of 9.6%. Water consumption fell from 4.54 hl/hl in FY13 to 3.99 hl/hl, a 19.2% savings exceeding the FY15 target of 4.79 hl/hl. MDBC: Heineken has strict guidelines on Supply Chain Management. The Heineken Supplier Governance Procedure is made up of a strict four-step process, with the purpose of making sure suppliers are using the right practices and behaving in a sustainable way. Since you are now part of HEINEKEN’s global supply chain, will this have any effect on you and your vendors / suppliers? HE: Yes, we will roll out the HEINEKEN Supplier Code in addition to our local company code. No impact is expected as we already work with similar standards. As the leading brewer in the country, HEINEKEN Malaysia continues to instill world-class practices in its daily operations and supply chain management is extremely important to us. MDBC: How will this affect your operations under / within the industry constraints in Malaysia? HE: All global suppliers are already governed by this code. For local suppliers, we will gradually roll out the assessment process to all our local suppliers. The assessment is carried out by an independent third party vendor appointed by HEINEKEN Global Procurement. MDBC: How do you see HEINEKEN Malaysia fitting into the global HEINEKEN presence? HE: HEINEKEN Malaysia has, in the past, been awarded with the Guinness League of Excellence (GLoE) Award for brewing the best Guinness outside of Dublin – the only brewery in the world to have won the awards five years in a row (2007 – 2011). It obviously is an indication of the brewery’s abilities in producing premium quality beers which is comparable with any other international offering. HEINEKEN Malaysia has worked very hard to maintain our market leadership position in Malaysia via world-class, awardwinning products and we will continue to

do so. We never rest on our laurels and will continue to innovate. As mentioned, Malaysia continues to be a very important market for us. In fact, it is one of the key HEINEKEN markets in Southeast Asia; the increased presence now is testament to this development. This is part of HEINEKEN’s overall global strategy to focus on APAC as the next growth engine. MDBC: How will HEINEKEN Malaysia be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year? Where do you see HEINEKEN Malaysia going in the next 50 years? HE: As part of the celebrations, we announced a special interim dividend payout for our loyal shareholders for the financial period ending 31 December 2016, payable on 15 April 2016. At the recent EGM in April, the company also received shareholder approval to change our name from Guinness Anchor Berhad to Heineken Malaysia Berhad. Following this, we held

a grand party in Bukit Kiara to show our appreciation to all our valued business partners who have worked with us for so many years. As we show our appreciation to a great corporate milestone, we will continue to focus our energies and commitment to ensuring that HEINEKEN Malaysia remains the undisputed premium drinks company in the country. Part of this success is due to us being very consumercentric with respect for local dynamics and sensitivities. I think that’s an appropriate manner to celebrate our rich and fruitful legacy since 1965. As for where we will be in the next 50 years, I do not have a crystal ball but I can assure you that HEINEKEN Malaysia will continue brewing great moments and help Malaysians celebrate their special personal milestones for many more years to come. This is an exciting time for HEINEKEN Malaysia. MDBCONNECTS 2ND ISSUE 2016

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM KOTUG

In 2014, KOTUG International expanded into Asia and since then has grown rapidly in the Asia Pacific maritime market. KOTUG now delivers marine services in several ports in Australia, Malaysia, and Brunei. They are also looking to expand into several other countries in the region. With this expansion comes a need for more information on these countries and their specific maritime market conditions.

The SIP Experiences of Aloys de Jonge at KOTUG. Third year Technical Engineering and Management student at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Aloys de Jonge is interested in international business and aspired to gain cross - cultural experience. Within a couple of weeks of approaching MDBC about an internship in Malaysia, Aloys had completed a Skype interview with Almar van Herk (Area Manager, KOTUG International) and was on his way to his internship in Asia.

“My internship consisted of doing market research and coming up with a business plan on how to enter these targeted countries. I was also responsible for looking into and reporting about other offshore related energy projects in Asia, as these projects also demand the other marine services that KOTUG provides. These were very interesting projects to look into as it gave me insight into the activities of large energy corporations and the shifting energy market,” shared Aloys.

KOTUG International is a Dutch towage company that provides marine services to large vessels that enter ports all around the world. KOTUG supports these vessels during the berthing in and mooring out process at the ports, as well as emergency response and other towage related services. Additionally, KOTUG designs and constructs their patented Rotortug which is considered one of the safest and most versatile tugboats in the world.

contact with his colleagues which he has enjoyed. “It gets me involved in various business activities and my colleagues share a lot of their knowledge and experiences with me, which helps me develop my professional skills and know how. During my internship I was also given the opportunity to travel to places such as shipyards where I was able to observe different workplace cultures and how employees interact with one another and conduct themselves during various work day activities. KOTUG is really international oriented, helping me to achieve my goal of gaining cross cultural experience and working in a professional environment”, concluded Aloys. Aloys de Jonge during a presentation with his colleagues at the KOTUG office in Kuala Lumpur

During the first weeks of his internship, Aloys was offered time and support to gain knowledge about the towage market, the company, and the Asian business culture. Working at a small office, Aloys is in close

MY in NL ASEAN BUSINESS DIALOGUE On 26 May, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague organised and hosted the first ASEAN Business Dialogue. The event, which was coorganised with RVO (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland, or Netherlands Enterprise Agency), mainly targeted Dutch SMEs who are interested in exploring business opportunities in this region, expanding their network and gaining information. Of course the pull factor is a region which has 600 million inhabitants and a USD $2.6 trillion market, the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community on 1 January 2016, and several regional free trade agreements which offer a window of opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in the ASEAN region. The comprehensive program offered a lot of variety: first up was the Plenary session, during which experts and Dutch companies with experience in the region outlined business possibilities in the ASEAN market. The keynote speech was given by Matthijs van den Broek (Business Trends Asia), with Joost Vrancken Peeters (Kneppelhout Korthals Lawyers) moderating the panelists: Hans Biesheuvel (ONL), Frank Bomers (AccelerAsia), Johannes Drees (De Heus) and Marco Winter (MDBC). The 200+ audience had ample opportunity to fire a variety of questions to the panel.

c) Country - desks: guests could obtain in-depth information on all 10 ASEAN countries. To answer the many approaches by Dutch business people on Malaysia, Jurriaan Middelhoff (Netherlands Embassy), S. Siva (MIDA Frankfurt) and Marco Winter (MDBC) joined forces. They were supported by representatives of the Malaysian Embassy and its agencies (Matrade, Agricultural Office) based in The Hague. Numerous MDBC members were present, either involved in various programelements or as registered guests: Airborne, Business Trends Asia, Kneppelhout Korthals, Hudson & Rose, ECN, ABN AMRO Bank, Rabobank, IRO, HLB Van Daal & Partners, and TNO.

Marco Winter with the representatives of the Malaysian Embassy and agencies in The Hague (MIDA, Matrade, Agriculture) Jurriaan Middelhoff with organiser Bram Elmar van Opijnen (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Jason Mariarathanam (HLB Van Daal) and the Malaysian colleagues

It was an excellent event for the MDBC to be present at, to get exposure in The Netherlands and together with the Embassy, to meet prospective Dutch investors in Malaysia.

This was followed by the information mart which consisted of: a) Pitches on the opportunities in the region, with topics such as Logistics, Smart Cities, Energy (biomass), Life Sciences & Healthcare, Maritime and Agro. Orange ASEAN, for sustainable business cases, was also presented. b) Dedicated info - desks with the themes Agrofood, Maritime, Smart Cities, Energy and Financing. MDBCONNECTS 2ND ISSUE 2016

LET’S FUEL THEIR IMAGINATION TO THINK OF MORE INNOVATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS. How do we meet the growing energy needs of the modern world? Not just for today, but long into the future? It’s a complex question to which there is no simple answer. Whatever happens collaboration is essential. And a better mix of different, sustainable energies. At Shell we’ve been working with schools and universities around the world for more than 25 years on the Shell Eco-marathon – an innovative competition that challenges students to design, build and drive some of the most economical vehicles possible. The current record holder is capable of travelling 3771 km on the equivalent of one litre of fuel. It’s an incredible figure. But one we hope to beat this year. And is an example of how we’re working together to help develop a mix of energies that can power and sustain all our lives long into the future. EU - MALAYSIA FTA: A WIN WIN FOR BOTH PARTIES Free - Trade Agreement will benefit both Malaysia and the European Union, says World Bank economist. The European Union-Malaysia Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations were officially launched in Brussels on October 5th 2010, in parallel with negotiations for a partnership and cooperation agreement between the two parties. A total of seven rounds of FTA negotiations have taken place to date. According to the website of the Delegation of The European Union to Malaysia, the FTA negotiations are “ambitious and comprehensive, covering tariffs and non-tariff barriers for goods and services, as well as commitments on other trade-related areas, notably procurement, competition and sustainable development.” “The FTA will remove tariffs on most goods, open up trade in services beyond current General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) commitments and boost bilateral investment, encouraging

EU and Malaysian companies to expand their business into both regions. The preferential access that Malaysia would gain will enhance benefits to the robust and vibrant developing Malaysian economy,” the website said. Dr. Sjamsu Rahardja, senior economist at the World Bank’s office in Indonesia, said in an e-mail interview recently that for the EU, Malaysia’s good infrastructure can offer EU companies a good basis to operate from and supply goods and services in Malaysia, to the region, and to countries which Malaysia also has market access, such as ASEAN, Japan, Korea and Australia. “For Malaysia it would be market access and potential for facilitating more foreign direct investment (FDI) from the EU to use Malaysia as basis of production to supply goods to ASEAN or for services providers to establish businesses in Malaysia. “In terms of market access, EU is the largest single market in the world

EU Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, and Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed during the launch of the EU - Malaysia FTA in 2010.

and having an FTA with the EU can potentially help Malaysia’s standards of quality and technical regulations to comply with EU requirements. But more importantly, such an FTA can inform the domestic reform agenda to strengthen the competitiveness of Malaysia to respond to opportunities given by the FTA,’ he said. When asked how the FTA can benefit Malaysian small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), he said that complying with rules and standards in foreign markets (in this case the EU), cooperation in customs clearance, and access to competitive logistics services are key for SMEs to export directly to the EU. “In this sense, the EU - Malaysia FTA can potentially help address some of the issues, but also inform areas of reforms or institutional strengthening that Malaysia can implement so that SMEs can benefit from the opportunities. SMEs can also be linked as suppliers to other Malaysian companies or MNCs exporting to the EU market. Malaysia can certainly look at the issues that are preventing this from happening,” he concluded. While the EU - Malaysia FTA is still being negotiated, the fact that it is being endorsed and supported by third-party sources and experts, fuels hope that the FTA will come through sooner rather than later. According to media reports in March this year, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Seri Mustapa Mohamed said that the EU - Malaysia FTA will reconvene by June, paving the way for the conclusion of the long-delayed FTA. According to the reports, trade officials from both Malaysia and EU are currently working on resolving longstanding issues that have prevented the conclusion of the trade pact.

EUMCCI

TRADE FORUM & SECTOR COMMITTEEES The EU - Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (EUMCCI) organised its annual flagship dialogue EU - Malaysia Trade & Investment Forum 2016 in April. The EU is the second largest investor in Malaysia and Malaysia’s third largest trading partner, making the Forum particularly significant.

Themed “The Outlook on EU-Malaysia 2020: Trade & Investment Opportunities & Challenges”, the Forum was officiated by YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria (Secretary-General, Ministry of International Trade and Industry), and H.E Luc Vandebon (Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia) at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

The EUMCCI Trade Issues and Recommendations 2016 book, a compilation of position papers from EUMCCI’s eight key industry committees (that MDBC members are also invited to join), with indepth insight into the catalysts that propel each industry, and on ways to improve the business environment with public and private stakeholders, was launched at the Forum. The publication serves as an invaluable dialogue with leaders in their industry as European businesses continue to be integral partners in driving Malaysia’s future competitiveness, supporting Malaysia’s goal of Vision 2020 to become a high income and sustainable nation. The launch of the Trade book was followed by a panel discussion on, “In light of the TPP being finalised, will negotiations on EU-Malaysia FTA be renewed? Will FTA maintain its competitive edge against the TPP?”. Panellists included Sandra Callagan (Trade & Economic Counsellor, EU Delegation), Arividya Arimuthu (Ministry of International Trade & Industry), Prakash Chandran (President& CEO, Siemens Malaysia), and Klaus Landhaeusser (General

Manager - Automotive Sales, Original Equipment, SEA, Robert Bosch). The general concensus was that both the private and public sectors of Europe and Malaysia wish that the negotiations on EU-Malaysia FTA would resume. The Trade Issues publication is a culmination of the annual work of each EUMCCI committee, which looks into key industries to identify the critical issues faced, and proposes appropriate measures to improve the business environment. The EUMCCI Committees are platforms for EUMCCI (inclusive of MDBC) members of specific sectors. The Committees meet regularly to discuss issues affecting their particular industries, hold seminars with guest speakers from the government, academia, and business, and will lobby with the government for solutions to the issues affecting their sectors. Currently, EUMCCI has these Committees: Aerospace, Automotive, Green Building, Healthcare, Human Resources, Logistics & Transportation, Research & Innovation, Smart Technologies / Smart Grid, Wine & Spirits.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT KLM ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES In this 20th anniversary of the Malaysian Dutch Business Council (MDBC), we are putting a spotlight on our special “Founding Members” - those member companies who have been a part of the MDBC community since our very first day in 1996. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, is one of the founding members and at the end of last year, retained its position at the top of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), as the world’s most sustainable airline for the 11th year in a row. The DJSI is the most important international index measuring companies’ sustainable business performance. For no less than seven years, Air France-KLM has also occupied first place as Industry Group Leader in the category Transportation. Together with Air France, KLM has shown its ability to take a leading role over the past years in placing sustainable development in civil aviation on the agenda. The DJSI is an international gauge for the performance of companies that place sustainability front and center in their strategy and business operations. Each year, the number of participants around the world reporting about their economic, environmental, and social activities grows. This creates a broad image of the development of sustainability around the world and among the sectors in question. The Industry Group Leader report lays out what it is that makes the Industry Group Leader stand out from the others in the same sector. The report states: “For the seventh consecutive year, Air France-KLM has been named Transportation Industry Group Leader. The company continues to

demonstrate sustainability leadership in the transportation space, building on its long-term commitment to reduce its environmental impact, increase the company’s social value and local development. Air France-KLM has developed plans for improving its fuel efficiency by optimizing its routes and flight paths which has resulted in a 6.7% reduction in fuel consumption, an 18% reduction in hazardous industrial waste, a 10% reduction in the energy consumption, and a 3.9% decrease in water withdrawals compared to 2013. The company continues to lead the development and commercialization of bio-fuels as an alternative to fossil fuels, in line with the industry’s mid- and long-term commitments to reduce CO2 emissions. On the social front, Air FranceKLM measures and manages its economic impact at the destinations it serves, focusing on developing local economies, engaging with local stakeholders and upholding human rights”. Additional information is available in the AIR FRANCE KLM CSR report. The ‘Smart Energy’ programme is for KLM, the way to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020. Over and above investing in more fuelefficient aircraft and integrating lighter construction materials on board, using biofuel is one of the ways to achieve this target. KLM works closely with suppliers and other parties to contribute towards the use of sustainable materials and resources throughout the value chain. The development of flights using biofuel would not be possible without the partnership that KLM has developed with a variety of organisations that are part of KLM’s Corporate BioFuel programme.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded on 7 October, 1919 to serve The Netherlands and its colonies. KLM is the oldest airline still operating under its original name. KLM has been part of the Air France -KLM group since the merger in 2004. KLM is the core of the KLM Group, which further includes the wholly - owned subsidiaries KLM Cityhopper, transavia. com and Martinair. With Air France, KLM is at the forefront of the European airline industry. Offering reliability and a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism, 32,000 KLM employees work to provide innovative products for our customers and a safe, efficient, service - oriented operation with a proactive focus on sustainability. KLM has taken the initiative for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the airline sector. CSR is more than just a label for KLM. KLM and Air France together want to set the standard for an integrated approach in the airline sector. The CSR policy is directed at customers, employees and society. By signing the United Nation’s Global Compact, KLM has contributed to the UN Millennium Development Goals. In 2015,, Air France-KLM was placed top of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes sector Airlines for the 11th consecutive year. Air France-KLM is also the sector leader in the umbrella category Transport for the seventh time. This covers air, rail, road, and sea transportation, as well as airports. With a small homebase from which to work, KLM has maintained an international orientation from the beginning. KLM’s strength lies in the tightly - knit, worldwide network it has built up with its partners. This network links just about every important economic region in the world, covering 316 destinations in 115 countries. KLM’s Flying Blue frequent flyer program is one of the leaders in Europe with over 25 million members. Air France-KLM is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. Here in Malaysia, KLM can be found at:
