TIME TO CONNECT! Dear MDBC Members and Friends, This is the time to connect! Over the past few months, MDBC has been overly busy connecting; with our members throughout the country; with the business and government community in The Netherlands who have an interest in Malaysia; with a wide variety of colleague Chambers and other stakeholders and of course, with the relevant government authorities in Malaysia. To start off with the latter, this year has seen an increased need for representation and dialogue with the Malaysian authorities when several unfavourable measures for the business community took effect (such as the foreign exchange rules and the changes in the withholding tax). Through strong efforts by, and in cooperation with colleague Chambers such as EUMCCI and AMCHAM, our voices and issues were heard by the Ministry of Finance, Bank Negara, MITI, MIDA, InvestKL, and even up to the Prime Minister; at the time of print we are still awaiting favourable results from these dialogues. The Netherlands Embassy initiated a private dialogue and networking for Dutch

MNCs and SMEs with the Minister of International Trade & Industry, YB Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed, accompanied by the top management of MIDA, Matrade, SME Corp, and InvestKL. The Minister, also in his capacity as MDBC Patron, has promised to do his utmost to tackle the issues that were brought forward. In Penang, we connected with our members and local experts to discuss the above mentioned issues as well as GST matters and the new companies act.

In Johor, we set another milestone for MDBC by launching the MDBC Johor Chapter at Medini @ Iskandar, in the presence of local members, business, and government representatives.

Dutch businesses who have an interest in Malaysia; together with representatives of the Netherlands Embassy in KL, MIDA and Matrade, we answered their questions and explained why Malaysia is a favourable investment destination in ASEAN. Together with InvestKL we also organised a briefing session for a dozen Dutch Multinationals (from current large investors to new entrants to the Malaysian market). In the meantime, here in KL we just continue with what we do best: connecting members and guests at informative events, with a variety of topics and expert speakers. To top it all off, we organised the second edition of our unique MDBC Connects Fair, showcasing the products and services of 35 of our member companies. Looking forward to connecting with you too! MDBC VISIT TO KPMG CYBERSECURITY & DIGITAL HUB

Cybersecurity has emerged as a strategic issue, critical to securing networks, software and data from internal and external threats. It was therefore of the utmost importance to get insights and perspectives on the latest cybersecurity trends, focusing on how these issues range from goepolitical topics to breaches, and how vulnerabilities affect businesses and individuals alike. With this in mind, MDBC invited members to get a briefing on managing their organization’s cyber risk, and how to identify solutions that can improve and protect their digital infrastructures. This event was organised in conjunction with the study-tour to Malaysia of a delegation from the Dutch association of IT Bachelor Programs at the Universities of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands (Program Directors, Deans and Professors). Attendees also participated in a special visit to, and demo of, KPMG’s Cybersecurity and Digital Hub.

MDBC EDUCATION 360: CULTURAL IMPACT IMPROVING PERFORMANCE IN YOUR MULTICULTURAL TEAM The MDBC Education 360: Improving Performance in Your Multicultural Team workshop was conceived to get participants to experience the benefits of seriously looking at cultural issues in the workplace, and of opening conversations on sensitive topics. As social and economic change comes faster and faster, organizations need cross-cultural competences to remain effective and competitive. Yet leaders and workers alike often fail to see how crucial cross-cultural competences are - and that if we don’t improve our skills, we are asking for organizational and cultural gridlock. The business landscape in Malaysia is no exception. Despite Malaysia’s pride in its multicultural make up, there are still struggles to cope with the challenges such cross cultural cooperations bring. Dutch expatriats also have trouble translating what they learn from other cultures into effective behaviours to connect and engage with their Malaysian colleagues.

Led by Marie Tseng from Cultural Impact, the half day mini workshop had participants reflect on their experience to share their thoughts and perceptions. The group’s diversity enabled them to gain immediate insights and feedback. By experiencing open conversation in a safely

guided environment, participants had the unique opportunity to discuss and compare cross-cultural challenges, while gaining confidence in addressing sensitive topics in their workplaces. A key element of the workshop was to provide a framework to make sense of one’s experiences and to generate better outcomes to challenging and frustrating situations that occur at work. A participant chimed in the most valuable aspect of the workshop to be how he “learned to appreciate the differences in cultures and how to deal with them, while reaffirming some of my actions.” By the end of the workshop, participants had gained essential information to adapt faster to the Malaysian – Dutch environment at work. Marie shared practical tips to optimize communication and networking skills, giving participants a sharper edge in understanding the dynamics of multicultural teams – a key factor to effective performance in any organisation. BIG DUTCHMAN OPENS NEW REGIONAL HEAD OFFICE IN MALAYSIA

25 years after Big Dutchman (BD), the world market leader for modern pig and poultry production, made the move to emerging markets in Asia, the company marked another milestone: a brand-new regional head office with logistics centre for the Asia-Pacific region was recently opened in Malaysia. The location is the largest and most modern centre in the entire Big Dutchman family, which is currently active in 120 countries and has about 3,000 employees. Jan Hofstede (President, BD Asia), explained the substantial investment in Asia, “It’s an important step in meeting the increasing demand for livestock equipment, especially by the poultry sector, in this region of the world.” According to Hofstede, this location shows BD’s firm commitment to establishing modern and sustainable systems for animal husbandry and meat production. 60% of the world’s population live in the Asia-Pacific region; the demand for animal products is increasing. “We want to meet this demand by allowing a production that is as secure, clean, efficient and animal-friendly as possible,” said Bernd Meerpohl (CEO, BD Group), adding that this goal requires that Big Dutchman “offers its solutions on site, in close contact with producers and consumers, and takes on its responsibilities as supplier”. Built just nine years after the previous

location, the new centre is five times larger than its predecessor. It is conveniently located near Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur is only 30 km away. The head office and logistics centre fits well into the environment and infrastructure with sufficient room for additional growth. A solar panel the size of two football fields has been installed on the warehouse’s roof to supply green power. Presentation and training rooms turn the location into a centre of excellence for modern livestock production, one of the reasons why Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Second Minister for International Trade and Industry in Malaysia, paid tribute to the company from Northern Germany during the grand opening and expressed his gratitude for BD’s commitment. He watched the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was followed by the traditional and colourful lion dance, as did H.E. Karin Mössenlechner (Ambassador, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands). The BD team celebrated the grand opening of the new regional head office and logistics centre with more than 300 other guests – customers, suppliers and constructors – from all around the world.

Ambassador Mössenlechner added, “This year, The Netherlands is celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations with Malaysia, but the actual engagement dates go back much further, beginning in Johor. Already in 1602, the first friendship alliance between the Dutch and then Sultan of Johor was established, so I am glad we are back at the place where it all started; I hope to see the continuation, and even further strengthening of our close trade and investment partnership as The Netherlands was the second largest investor in Malaysia in 2016 with RM 3.2 billion.” Dr. James Tee shared, “We are very pleased to have the MDBC Johor Chapter here in Medini. This bears testament to the prospects available, and also to the growth opportunities offered in Medini, being the Central Business District of Iskandar Puteri.” Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said, “Iskandar Malaysia continues to welcome all foreign investments that are aligned to its nine promoted economic sectors and provide spill over effect to the economy. It is my sincere hope that the opening of the MDBC Johor Chapter in Medini at the heart of Iskandar Malaysia will enhance the mutually beneficial relationship between the business community in The Netherlands and Iskandar Malaysia.” As part of the launch event, MDBC members were treated to an exclusive tour to view developments in and surrounding Medini. STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DMT

The SIP Experiences of Floris Royer at DMT Environmental Technology. Floris Royer (a Master’s student in Industrial Engineering & Management at the University of Groningen) is interested in international business; this interest led him to apply at DMT Environmental Technology, a market leader in Biogas upgrading and an international organization. “The focus of the student lies on the feasibility of our products in the Malaysian market” explains Harmen Dekker, Director of Sales & Marketing at DMT Environmental Technology. “We expect the student to deliver a thorough analysis on the business case with respect to financial, technical, operational, and legal aspects.

TWOSONS AUDIO The SIP Experiences of Rinse Hoogeveen at TwoSons Audio. Rinse Hoogeveen, a second year Marketing Management student from the Hanze University of Applied Science in Groningen is currently doing his internship with MDBC member TwoSons Audio. Knowing that he wanted to do his internship abroad, but unsure of which country to do it in, Rinse discussed this with a friend who had previously done his internship in Kuala Lumpur with SIP. With this being the first experience (far) away from home (and the first outside of Europe), Rinse wasn’t sure what to expect but trusted SIP and was excited to experience Asia. Rinse ended up getting an internship working for TwoSons Audio, a trusted and very experienced company providing sound & light systems, stage and truss, LED screens, A/V, and event consultancy.

Besides the execution of the research oriented elements, we expect the student to be a representative of the company,” he added. DMT Environmental Technologies (DMT) is the market leader in biogas upgrading using membrane technology. At the pinnacle of innovation, DMT strives towards a clean and prosperous future that benefits the planet and its people. Operating in multiple international markets (USA, Canada, UK, Russia and Brazil to name a few), they’re exploring the Asian market hoping to expand their marketshare with the Malaysian palm oil industry. According to Floris, “I feel honored that DMT has trusted me with such a comprehensive set of tasks and responsibilities. It shows they have great faith in SIP.” “We like our interns to be hands on and to really be in the market. Floris is the right guy to do the job. We can see him maintaining business relationships, identifying potential customers and making appearances at public events such as conventions or networking events. He is eager and very responsible”, says Harmen Dekker. “The most interesting part of my internship is the daily contact that I have with local

“My boss is really focussed on giving all the interns the chance to experience the country and the culture and took me the first few weeks to a lot of restaurants to learn about and taste Malaysian dishes. He also took me to the events that the company had been contracted to work. By means of these activities, I got to directly immerse myself in Asia culture and it gave me a good impression of how the company operates,” shared Rinse. On his internship responsibilities, Rinse added, “Basically, I am the personal assistant of my boss, I follow him to meetings, events, expositions, just everything my boss needs to do. I also have to coordinate on the events of the company itself. I am busy with the online-marketing related activities of the company, developing a website and furthermore also doing research. My school assignment is research on the Chinese market. I am investigating the possibilities of expanding the services and products into the market of China. This is very interesting research, and I am also

contacts of DMT. The added responsibility of the function challenges me to perform on multiple business aspects simultaneously.” Because of the short time span, Floris had to teach himself the products, businessenvironment (markets), and potential customers of DMT in just a few months. Almost at the half way point, Floris is confident that he will finish the internship with the expected results. “Malaysia is officially still in the developing stage and you can clearly see growth happening around you. It is very motivating to see how concepts such as sustainability are gaining momentum, although there’s still a long way to go.” Harmen notes “I have to admit that I’m quite surprised by Floris, even though he is officially still a student, he has already started to behave as a project manager.” Up to this point, Floris has performed most of the research on his own initiative. The ability of Floris to work independently has convinced Harmen that joining the Student Internship Program was a good decision; the flexibility and efficiency of the program has led to fast and effective deployment of the intern. This is one of the most important value adding elements of the SIP.

planning to go to China to experience it in real life.” When reflecting on his experiences so far, Rinse noted that the internship has affected him more than he first thought. “I changed into a whole different person, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience through the work and also by having good conversations with my boss. You need to step completely out of your comfort zone, create a bond with your colleagues, get to know a whole different working method. It is now much easier for me to mix with other colleagues. I really appreciate the opportunity to do my internship abroad. I noticed that “expanding your horizon” is really a fact, and I have still 2 more months to go.” MDBCONNECTS 2ND ISSUE 2017

The MNCs are from Europe (five), Asia-Pacific and Gulf regions (five), and the U.S. (three). For 2017, InvestKL’s target is to attract 10 MNCs. In just six years from 2011 - 2016, RM 3.2 billion or 36% of the RM 8.9 billion investments have been realised. In addition, 5,233 or 56% of the 9,335 highskilled regional jobs are already on the payroll. Of these, 4,318 or 83% employed are Malaysians with an average annual income of RM 114,000 or USD 26,000.

NETHERLANDS EMBASSY NEWS

FINANCING OPPORTUNITIES IN MALAYSIA Ever wondered what possibilities there are to finance the expansion of your Dutch business in Malaysia? On the 29th of May, the Embassy, together with MDBC, hosted 25 Dutch enterpreneurs and MDBC members to inform them about financing possibilities. Rabobank was represented by Allard Voûte. More information about Rabobank’s services to Dutch clients in Malaysia can be found here: https:// rabowereldwijd.nl.

DTIF can offer up to € 15 million in financial support for each project. DTIF is a new instrument that was launched at the end of 2016. Because of its novelty the fund is very open to new projects. Find out more or do a quick requirement check at: http://english.rvo.nl/subsidiesprogrammes/dutch-trade-and-investmentfund-dtif Another interesting fund for Dutch enterpreneurs in Malaysia is the instrument for Demonstration projects, feasibility studies and preparing of investments (DHI).

the opportunities there are in SouthEast Asia. All Dutch embassies from the ASEAN region were present to give tips, advice and contacts to interested enterpreneurs. Needless to say, there was a lot of interest in the Malaysian pavillion. Before the ASEAN business dialogue, and in the presence of two Ambassadors, the Embassy, MDBC and InvestKL organised a ‘Malaysian Business luncheon’, with a dozen larger Dutch enterprises, with varying presence in Malaysia, from longtime larger MNCs to new entrants in the Malaysian market.

The DHI construction aims to increase and enhance the number of Dutch enterprises successfully operating abroad. The DHI construction consists of three modules: demonstration projects, feasibility studies, and investment preparation studies. You can send in a proposal for one of these modules. Dutch government agency RVO.nl was represented by Barry Brouns, investment manager of the Dutch Good growth Fund and the Dutch Trade and Investment Fund. This latter fund is now open for Dutch companies in Malaysia. In particular, it aims to help Dutch SMEs finance their business (investment, trade, expansion etc.) abroad when commercial financing is not available. DTIF might make commercial financing possible again, for example by guaranteeing first losses.
