From the Chairman

Dear MDBC members, friends and contacts,

On 9 June, the MDBC held its Annual General Meeting over Financial Year 2010 (report and pictures in the next edition). On behalf of the MDBC Board of Directors, I would like to thank the members who attended this AGM at the Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel. As a growing Business Council, we value the attendance, support and input of our members while we present the facts and figures of the previous year.

Dato’ Jaffar Indot

I can proudly say that 2010 was an excellent year judging from our full programme of events and our success in achieving a

membership base of 200, reflecting an increase of 500% in seven years. Financially, we have also done well in managing to build up our reserves to approximately 4-5 months of our operating expenses. This was possible because of higher revenues from memberships, advertising and sponsorships and the Student Internship Programme. This reflects that the services and the exposure which the MDBC provides are well received.

Netherlands Embassy and with all our member companies have also substantially contributed to our success.

The excellent trade and investments and the sound diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands further supported our Council’s growth this past year. The good working relationships that we enjoy with the

We can expect the remainder of 2011 to bring more excitement. With much confidence, we look forward to celebrating MDBC’s 15th Anniversary with you, inclusive of the inaugural MDBC Sustainability Awards 2011.

We have an active Board of Directors, who, together with our Executive Director and in various working groups, are involved in the Business Council’s main areas of attention such as internal governance, the internship program, finances, membership and (special) events.

MDBC events - sustainability

For the past few years, the Netherlands Embassy and the Malaysian Dutch Business Council have stood out with regard to organizing activities related to areas such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Governance, Green Technology, Sustainable Development, etc. We have found common ground in wanting to be at the forefront of providing opportunities to share information on Best Practices in these areas. This year, in conjunction with MDBC’s 15th Anniversary, we intend to take this one step further by launching the MDBC Sustainability Awards 2011 (MSA). The MSA, which is strongly supported by the Netherlands Embassy, will be an opportunity to acknowledge, showcase and reward the Best Practices of MDBC member-companies.

During this year’s Earth Hour, MDBC and Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur (CPM) joined forces to go “Beyond the Hour” and help bring a little light into the lives of the Blind. This participation with CPM for the Earth Hour celebration and donation to the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) was in line with MDBC’s focus on supporting sustainability and green initiatives. In addition to switching off all non-essential lights for an hour and fifteen minutes, a fun and exciting “Blind Auction” was held at CPM’s Glass Lounge where guests were able to bid on a variety of items donated by the hotel, its tenants and MDBC members Philips, Pensonic and Air France / KLM. Event contributions and donations were also made by MDBC members SHELL

Awards will be presented in the following 4 categories: 1. Best Corporate Sustainability for Employees 2. Best Corporate Sustainability for Environment 3. Best Corporate Sustainability for Community Development (These 3 categories will be open for nominations among MDBC members only). 4. Best Practices of a Malaysian Partner. (Nominations for this category can be made by MDBC members to highlight the efforts of their local partners, suppliers, (sub)contractors, etc.)

IHG Malaysia Cluster hotels (Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie, Holiday Inn Melaka, Holiday Inn Resort Penang and the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur) also participated in the event. Combining the money raised from the Blind Auction and by the Cluster hotels with the corporate donations, the donations from hotel staff and guests as well as 20% of the hotel’s own energy savings achieved during this event totalled RM 23,374.

LET’S GO FURTHER ON ONE LITRE OF FUEL. We must learn to use energy more efficiently. For 25 years, the Shell Eco-Marathon has supported teams worldwide who explore ways to maximise fuel economy. This year, the Shell Eco-Marathon will be brought to Asia for the first time. It will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and will feature many teams from across Asia. Last year’s winner went 3,771 km on the equivalent of one litre of fuel. This spirit epitomises our relationship with car manufacturers, finding ways to make cars more efficient. And is typical of our ambition to help build a better energy future. Let’s go. www.shell.com/letsgo

SPECIAL event Future Energy with Dick Benschop In line with MDBC’s support and information-sharing on sustainability and green initiatives, we were honoured with the opportunity to invite MDBC members for a talk by Dick Benschop, Vice President for Strategy, Royal Dutch Shell & Country Chair, Shell Netherlands, on “Future Energy”. The event, which aptly took place one day after World Environment Day, was hosted by Netherlands Ambassador H.E. Paul Bekkers. A variety of other guests from the energy sector also joined the talk.

class” which means that by 2050, the energy demand is expected to double, whereby 90% of the growth comes from the developing world. 2: “Easy” energy sources cannot meet demand. Existing and traditional sources of energy (oil, gas and coal) that are easily accessed and harnessed, struggle to keep up with the rising demand for energy. It takes time to develop new fields and we are forced to look further away - offshore, arctic, etc. - increasing the difficulty and expense of energy production. 3: Climate Change. While we should be cutting our emissions, our energy consumption is actually driving up CO2 emissions. How do we deal with this? There are consequences to the increase in all types of energy production. This increase has to be across all sources of energy as no one source can meet demand.

The recent financial crisis has forced industry players to look at the increasingly unpredictable world that we live in. In this unstable environment (politically, economically and socially), there is more volatility in energy demand and pricing. Focus is now on how we deal with our long term energy needs. How do we deal with this volatility? According to Benschop, the industry focuses on 3 hard truths. 1: Rising Demand. With the population growth and increasing prosperity of emerging economies, the demand for energy continues to grow. Segments of the populations in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are experiencing an upward mobility in socio economic classification from “poor” to “middle

For planning purposes, Shell company forecasters produced two energy scenarios for the next couple generations, the world of “scramble” and the world of “blueprints”. In the Scramble world, events outpace actions. Governments generally choose short term solutions that are politically straightforward and local, preferring to rely on indigenous energy sources. Eventually, a more positive phase will emerge with enforced steps to reduce energy demand gradually. Because events outpaced actions, major work at a high cost will be needed to achieve sustainability. In the world of Blueprints, actions outpace events. The general public will put international pressure on governments for change. Different parts of the

world use different approaches to promote energy efficiency and technology development. The most successful approaches spread but diversity makes life difficult for investment. Pressure is created on local, national and international authorities to harmonize arrangements better and to find a balance between the drivers. Meaningful CO2 pricing gives people and organizations incentive to improve energy efficiency and technologies. Reality will likely be a mix of the two worlds. From a policy perspective, consideration must also be given to the rapid pace of urbanization. The global population base might increase so rapidly that by 2050 there will be an additional 2.5 billion people on earth. This will have a huge impact on energy demand and emphasizes the need for energy efficiency. Currently 50% of energy being produced does not reach its destination so is lost. Improving energy efficiency will reduce waste, will make energy cheaper and offers a cost effective means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Benschop added that on the supply side, the combination of renewable energy and gas is of interest at the moment. With renewable energy, the supply is intermittent; gas can be used to fill in these gaps. Gas supplies are more abundant than previously thought. According to Benschop,

the world as a whole has at least 25 years of gas reserves available. Many countries are now looking into this source of energy as the technology is available to efficiently extract this source and it is more environmentally friendly than coal plants. The technological advances, especially in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have helped to increase the total US natural gas resources by almost 50% in the last decade. The challenge now is to get nations like China to be more comfortable with gas as an electricity source. With renewable energy, it takes time (an average of 30 years) to develop technologies to the point where they can be viable commercially. Renewable energy currently provides about 18% of total electricity generation worldwide. Wind is only now approaching about 1% of total energy production, with biomass on an equal footing. Benschop concluded his presentation by posing these two questions for the audience: Are we going in the right direction? And are we going fast enough? After Benschop’s talk, the 70 guests from the energy and related sectors were in the right frame of mind to witness the launch of MDBC’s Sustainability Awards 2011 event (page 3). 7

BE-BASIC and UNIK sign OPBC agreement 19 April 2011 marked the “Innovation Lift-off” date of over 22 selected ecosystem and wealth creation intiatives in Malaysia with high potential for commercialisation, aiming to benefit the innovators, the business community and society at large. One of the initiatives is the cooperation between the Unit Inovasi Khas (UNIK) within the Prime Minister’s Office (currently the Agensi Inovasi Malaysia, AIM) and the Dutch BE-BASIC consortium. An MoU to jointly develop the Palm Oil Biomass Roadmap for Malaysia was signed during the event whereby it is the intention that the BE-Basic consortium - coordinated by Technical University Delft - establishes a similar consortium in Malaysia. This consortium, the Oil Palm Biomass Consortium (OPBC), will focus on the use of palm waste as a raw material for the chemical indusry. Being a “Waste to Wealth” (W2W) initiative, this joint undertaking is considered to be a Strategic Impact Project which can make a significant contribution to Malaysia’s GDP. It is estimated that turning much of the 70 million tonnes of palm biomass and waste into high-value chemicals and biomaterials can generate a global market value of Euro 45 billion. In addition, the joint undertak-

ing will also reduce the carbon footprint in the oil palm industry. A first step in the collaboration will involve the macro-economic impact study of the bio-based economy in Malaysia. The use of palm waste in the production of energy, chemicals and materials could make an important contribution to the effort to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in Malaysia by the indended 40% (as compared to 2005) by 2020. The future Malaysian OPBC consortium will include participation from the Malaysian government, the Institute of Bioproduct Development of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, University Putra Malaysia and other academic parties and actors from the Malaysian palm industry. The OPBC will thus make use of the knowledge and experience that has been developed within the Dutch model of public-private partnerships, such as that reflected in the BE-Basic consortium. The collaboration between the two consortia will also include exchange of students and young researchers and a joint research program focused on green (bio)innovations in the chemical and energy sectors. An important place in the knowledge-sharing process will also be reserved for issues of a more social nature.

New IP Regulations Unveiled The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) announced amendments to the Trade Marks and Patents Regulations on 15 February 2011. Major changes of interest include: Official Fees A noticable change is a significant increase in official fees across the board by about 30% 60%. This is the first fee increase in more than 13 years for trade marks and 15 years for patents in Malaysia. It is hoped that the extra funds will help towards expanding the workforce and productivity of MyIPO that will ultimately translate into benefiting IP owners. Expedited Examination There are now formal provisions for requesting expedition of examination of both trade marks and patents. For trade marks, such a request has to be filed

within four months from the initial application date, whereas for patents there is no time limit as such provided the application has already been laid open to public inspection and a request for examination has been submitted. In any event, the expedited process is not available at all for trade mark applications filed prior to 15 February 2011. Justification for the expedited examination is required through a Statutory Declaration. There are various grounds on which expedited examination may be considered. However, in view of the considerable non-refundable official fee, it is not envisaged that expedited patent examination will be used frequently. E-Filing In keeping with the digital age, MyIPO has put in place an online system to allow certain transac-

tions to take place electronically. As an incentive, official fees payable for e-filing are given a token discount. The system is totally new and most agents have concerns on its reliability and capability, so there may be a lengthy transition period before the majority of applications are filed and prosecuted electronically. Nevertheless, the first steps have been taken. Trade Mark Prosecution There are some changes affecting the prosecution of trade mark applications. In a single trade mark application for each class of goods/services, there is a new official fee payable for the third and subsequent mark in a series of marks. An official fee is also now payable when an applicant requests for an ex-parte hearing to prosecute an application further when the Registrar maintains any objection previously raised.

Patent Prosecution Changes With a view to completing the formalities of an application as soon as possible, the Power of Attorney and statement of entitlement are now required to be filed with the initial application. Otherwise, an adverse formalities report will be issued. The term for requesting examination of a direct (non-PCT) application has been reduced to 18 months from the filing date. MyIPO has advised that the previous two-year term can still be relied on for applications filed prior to 15 February 2011. The next wave of IP law reform is expected to be in the copyright arena, with a Copyright Bill due to be tabled in the Parliament in March 2011. Contributed by Dave A. Wyatt Henry Goh & Co

NL in MY / NFIA / MDBC Penang The Netherlands, Your Gateway to Europe “Many of the advantages that Malaysian companies seek such as expansion into new markets, cost reduction and improved productivity and competitiveness can be realised by working with Dutch partners. Hence, more companies should seek to benefit from them,” shared Jan Soer, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Malaysia.

Speakers at the “The Netherlands, Your Gateway to Europe” seminar

The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), in cooperation with MDBC, the Netherlands Embassy, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and MDBC members: Holland International Distribution Council (HIDC), Loyens & Loeff and TNT, recently held a logistics seminar and networking reception at the Equatorial Hotel in Penang. With the objective of helping Malaysian manufacturers and service providers move up the value chain and to penetrate new markets, this special seminar entitled The Netherlands – Your Gateway to Europe was held for local businesses. Officiated by Penang State Exco for Internal Trade & Consumer Affairs, YB Tn Hj Malik Abdul Kassim, on behalf of the Chief Minister of Penang, the seminar was attended by companies from across Penang and Northern Malaysia. This event helped to create exposure and awareness for Malaysian companies on the many opportunities available for transfer of technology, joint ventures and technical matchmaking as of18

fered by Dutch private and public sectors. These opportunities offer significant, potential benefits for Malaysian companies in the fields of manufacturing, agriculture, life-sciences, green technology, renewable energy and logistics industries. An example of this would be in logistics, Malaysian companies would enjoy considerably lower cost and time savings by leveraging on the Dutch logistics infrastructure, which is regarded as one of the world’s best. The seminar also highlighted the Netherlands’ attractiveness as an investment destination and its unique position as a gateway to Europe’s 860 million affluent customers. The Netherlands offers many benefits and advantages including one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe at 25% (per annum), However, the lack of awareness and knowledge on the Netherlands and Europe in general has been a stumbling block which the seminar aimed to address.

“This seminar brings the information, market intelligence and cutting-edge Dutch technology and practices directly to Malaysia. Local businesses need not travel to the Netherlands on fact-finding trips which would be more costly and challenging,” emphasised Soer. “As competition intensifies with the onset of globalisation, many Malaysian businesses are seeking ways to enhance operations and tap new markets. Event such as this provide exposure to Malaysian companies and we hope will spur them to move up the value chain and also adopt an international outlook,” shared O.K. Lee, Chairman of FMM Penang. The event featured several key note speakers addressing various concerns pertaining to financial and legal matters,

logistics and the investment climate in the Netherlands. They included Dirk ‘t Hooft, Chief Executive Officer of the Holland International Distribution Council, Linnie Mackenzie, Area Director of Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), Eliënne de Vries of Loyens & Loeff and Gerry Power, Managing Director of TNT Express Malaysia. “TNT is pleased to be associated with this initiative. We have a strong base in Penang and we believe that more Malaysian companies should start adopting an international outlook coupled with a greater focus on improving their competitive ability. International trade and transactions are now becoming part and parcel of everyday business,” said Power. As part of the Penang seminar and fact-finding initiative, the small Dutch delegation also visited the TNT facility and several local manufacturers, with the aim to learn more about their requirements as well as how Dutch technology can improve their business, aside from exploring potential joint ventures and smart partnerships. STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Interns Interview - Anni and Olivia Olivia Nauta and Anni Zhou are pressed for time for this interview. The two students from Hanze University of Applied Sciences are working for Malaysian Exhibition Services (MES), the largest exhibition organiser in Malaysia and this is one of the busiest times for the company. The MTA (Machine Tools) was their first show followed by the record-breaking Oil & Gas Asia (OGA). Asean Elenex / Industry Automation exhibition is up in July and in between, there will be launches for upcoming shows such as DSA (Defence) and the new Asia+ Medical. Olivia, a 3rd year student Marketing Communication Management, works at the Marketing Department where she gets to assist with all event preparations, from managing the VIP program to proofreading the show preview and writing articles for the Show Daily. “After all the preparations, it is so special to see the show materialise; personally meeting contact persons behind the emails, checking if banners, sponsor logo’s and signages are in the right places and welcoming the VIPs, there are many tasks to such events!” beams Olivia.

SIP Briefing “MDBC SIP students are knowledgeable, eager to learn and hard working students with pleasant personalities. They have proven to be of great value to our organisation and have added fun to the working atmosphere.”

Anni & Olivia at the Holland Pavilion at OGA

Anni, also a 3rd year student Marketing Communication Management, is active within the Operations Department, which is dealing with contractors and the build-up of the exhibition. “I am responsible for registering all the contractors before the show starts. It is really interesting how the contractors build their stands in just three days; some of the booths look so nice, it is amazing!” Anni explains. During these hectic times, the students enjoy their friendship with colleagues in the office. Outside of work, they travel and see as much as they can, “Especially Malaysian islands such as Perhentian have captured us; the beaches and water are so clean!” they conclude in unison.

This was probably one of the best testimonials ever made on the MDBC Student Internship Program! This positive statement was made by Tom ter Horst, Communications Officer at the European Forest Institute (EFI), during the SIP Briefing on 2 June for interested MDBC members. EFI has had several interns over the past two years.

Dennis de Witt, Company Secretary for Eurogain Consulting, also shared his experiences. A first-time partner in the program, Eurogain currently works with three interns from financial and marketing backgrounds. Representatives of 20 MDBC member-companies attended the briefing, which started with MDBC’s new SIP Coordinator Jolande Jonge Poerink covering the process of the program, inclusive of what member com-

The Intern Interview - Marlies de Boer Marlies de Boer, a final year Financial Services Management student at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, is currently doing her internship with Getronics Asia Pacific. Getronics is one of the leading ICT service providers in the world. They are experts in workspace management services, connectivity, data centers and consultancy. According to Marlies, “My assignment is to help set up the newly

created Business Control Department. I have to apply various materials and concepts covered during my studies.” “I also conducted interviews with the Management of Getronics. Their ability to summarize and simplify complex concepts and the sharing of their experience was a big eye-opener,” Marlies added. In addition to applying her classroom experiences to a real world business environment at a well established international

company, Marlies has had the opportunity to get familiar with the Asian culture. Venturing out of the city, she is set on exploring the local islands and “must do” experiences including trips to Batu Caves, Melaka and the Elephant Sanctuary. “After com-

pleting my assignment, I will travel around Asia for 6 weeks. I’m going to Vietnam, Sabah, Sarawak and Bali where I hope to get my PADI diving license. This will make my learning experience in Asia complete!” Marlies concludes. 23

eu EU helps local SMEs Move Up Biomass Value Chain

available biomass feedstock into green products.

In Europe alone, biomass accounts for almost 70% of all renewable energy and this is further supported by 800 solid biomass power plants already in place across the region in 2010.

The project also promotes collaboration between industry members, research institutions and universities, and government agencies in Malaysia to address its inconsistent biomass supply issues and unlock its wealth creation potential.

The EU-Malaysia Sustainable Production of Biomass Initiative (Biomass-SP), a development cooperation project funded by the European Union (EU) under the SWITCH-Asia Programme aims to develop the biomass industry in Malaysia based on the principles of sustainable consumption and production (SCP).

A similar pattern is also found in other countries rich with biomass resources such as Brazil, Canada, China, India, Indonesia and Thailand, where substantial investments are made in biomass renewables such as nonenergy crops, agricultural waste, forestry residues, municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial waste, etc.

As countries begin to put a higher target for renewable resources in their energy mix, biomass has been identified as one of the major resources for energy which meets these growing ‘green’ aspirations.

In Malaysia, the biomass industry is gaining attraction, but at a slower pace. Being the second largest producer of palm oil, it is widely recognised that the country has what it takes to accelerate the conversion of its readily

To achieve this, the project is running an initiative called the EUMalaysia Biomass Entrepreneurs Nurturing Programme (EUMBENP). Altogether, 50 SMEs will be selected to receive complimentary coaching services related to biomass commercialisation and link to the EU value chain. The coaching services include grant and loan application opportunities, technology commercialisation, EU business partnership and green procurement standards, clean development mechanism (CDM), carbon footprint measurement and ecolabelling, ISO 14001 environmental management standards (EMS), etc. According to the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Malaysia, Vincent Piket, this initiative is an excellent way to foster ties between Europe and Malaysia. Piket said, “There are so many opportunities for Malaysian SMEs to meet the demand in the EU. Many industries in Europe are using renewable energy to power their industries. Things such as wood pellets are highly needed and Malaysia has the raw materials to create them pillared on the principles of sustainable production.” In line with the EU vision to promote climate change mitigation and sustainable development, environmental enhancement is given utmost priority in the proj-

ect. Selected SMEs will receive 50% subsidy to implement ISO 14001 in their operation, while the project also champions carbon footprint measurement initiative for eco-product manufacturing companies. Under its capacity, the BiomassSP also has a pool of investors keen to fund biomass power plant projects where they can generate carbon credits to sell under the clean development mechanism (CDM). Biomass-SP Technical Advisor, Dato’ Leong Kin Mun said, “In its first year, the project has reached out to an estimated 500 biomass stakeholders from various levels of biomass supply chain who participated in the road show seminars held across Malaysia. We are aiming to tap into finding emerging SMEs and we hope to get a diverse pool of biomass SMEs on board so everyone can benefit from the project via the multiplying effects.” So far, Biomass-SP has received more than 100 applications from SMEs to participate in the EUMBENP and 44 have been selected to receive complimentary coaching under the initiative. The programme will help the SMEs to develop the links of biomass industry locally and internationally and coach them to implement sustainable production green business models in their biomass commercialisation activities. The project hopes that more Malaysian SMEs will take heed and get on the biomass band wagon to further spur the growth of the green technology sector in Malaysia, while at the same time contribute to the global climate mitigation effort and create social profit to the environment. 25

Some see this as trash, visionaries see environmental change. Who would have thought that waste from our paddy fields could make a global impact? Well, the visionary mind of a Malaysian scientist did, by discovering a revolutionary method of producing Aerogel using rice husks. Aerogel is a high-tech insulator material that can help reduce energy consumption, but its high cost limited its use. This is where the discovery becomes such a breakthrough. Malaysian Aerogel or Maerogel costs 80% less to produce, making it so affordable that it can be used commercially. At TBWA-TEQUILA, we commend this effort to see beyond what others see. It’s an inspiring example of Disruption, our agency’s tool to help our clients discover new possibilities to seek a better way forward. It is a practice that helps us change the rules. A working methodology and a life view philosophy. It is the art of challenging conventional wisdom and overturning assumptions that prevent us from imagining visionary ideas. Disruption is a necessity for growth and a bigger share of the future. For every brand. In every category. If you’d like to see how we can help your brand disrupt your category, call Aaron Cowie at 012-201 3887 or email him at aaron.cowie@tbwamy.com. He’ll help you see things differently.

tbwa The evolution of the corporate website: five strategies for integrating social media. Six if you include no integration. Your company’s website is not the animal it was five years ago. Whether through the incorporation of a simple sharing mechanism or some more sophisticated form of customer collaboration, the Corporate Website is undergoing a major transformation. Here are five strategies for integrating this thing called Social into your website, in order of increasing complexity and effectiveness. 1) Social linking Social linking is exactly what it says it is. The by now ubiquitous and rather simplistic process of linking users to your company’s social media assets (Facebook page, Twitter profile, Wordpress blog, Youtube channel). While any attempt to engage our customers in the social channels must be commended, Social Linking is in fact less effective

than we might want. The primary reason for this is that you’re actually sending users away from your site, often to a third party property. And then you have to figure out how to get them back to your site. 2) Social aggregation / curation Instead of sending users away from your site to various social media assets, Social Aggregation describes the process of sucking interesting information back into your site - think widgets and Tweet rivers. By curating information or conversations that are happening around your product or service you’re able to harness the power of peer-to-peer influence right there in your website - where the product or service lives. 3) Social publishing A deceptively simple but powerful strategy for harnessing the power of peer-to-peer authority. The humble “share” and “like” buttons allow for the organic dissemination of relevant information from your website within

5 Ways to Integrate Social Media to Your Site personal networks. By including trackable, shortened URLs, you’re not only bringing users back to your site on the basis of a very powerful “friend” recommendation, but you can track where they came from too. 4) Contextual sharing Part social aggregation, part social publishing, contextual sharing describes a scenario in which a user is able to observe their friends’ activity around a product or service. Amazon, for example, uses Facebook connect curate reviews of their merchandise. So if I log in to Amazon using my Facebook account, I am able to see not only anonymous reviews of the books I might want to purchase, but also more importantly, which of my actual friends has bought the same book (and presumably written a review). 5) Unification For us this is the holy grail. Imagine that there is no corporate website, or not as we know it, anyway. Our company’s digital

presence is an amalgamation of all of the above. There’s no distinction between website proper and so-called social media assets. My experience of the product or service on offer is based on my own journey along the trail social bread crumbs that I happen to be following at any given point in time. Finally, in creating digital strategies we always try to remember that while product information is important, what’s even more important is the people who have bought and are already using that product or service. Once we accept this, we are able to leverage their (hopefully) positive influence to bring people to our site, rather than merely disseminating our brochure-ware into the social ether in the hope that it might do some good. green board Protecting the planet is an essential part of our Corporate Responsibility strategy. As a transport company, we cannot ignore our impact on the environment. Our business – transporting goods by trucks and airplane – makes us a key contributor to CO2 emissions that harm our world. In fact, the transport sector as a whole accounts for ca 18% of global CO2 emission output. Our commitment, called Planet Me, is a holistic environmental programme focused on dramatically improving the carbon efficiency of our global operations and engaging our employees through e.g. driver training. Our extended network of suppliers and subcontractors as well as governments and NGOs is joining us in our efforts. Our ambition is to become the world’s first zero-emission transport company. Zero signifies where we want to be in the future: operating zero-emission buildings and depots, managing a fleet of zero-emission vehicles, improving our City Logistics operations, leasing only zero-emission company cars – ultimately, zero carbon output in everything we do. Planet Me is comprised of three focus areas: * Measuring and monitoring our CO2 performance * Improving the CO2 efficiency of our core operational activities * Engaging our employees to adopt sustainable behaviour at all times In 2010, Express published its target to improve the CO2 efficiency index (CO2 target) by 40% by 2020, compared to the 2007 baseline year. So far, our efforts are made a good start. In 2009, total “own”

CO2 emissions were 983 ktonnes, compared with 1,108 ktonnes in 2008. In fact, we have reduced our own CO2 emissions by 11% since 2008. There’s still a long way to go, but the commitment is there and we are on our way. Although we operate in an industry that is a key contributor to CO2 emissions, we care very much about the global environment. We are working on a number of specific initiatives that are tackling our emissions head on. Two of these initiatives are as follows: City Logistics Our aim with City Logistics is to deliver smart zero emission solutions to customers in city locations and to improve sustainability in inner cities by reducing emissions, daytime noise and congestion while protecting and growing TNT’s value.

* Mobile Depot - where independent TNT supply chains are integrated to better optimise TNT’s networks. The Mobile Depot is loaded at a hub outside the city and transported directly into the city centre, from where last-mile deliveries are covered with zero emission transport, such as electric tricycles or electric vehicles. * TNT High Street - where parcels being delivered to TNT Express’ key lifestyle customers located in the same “fashion high streets” in major cities are consolidated and delivered using electric vehicles to reduce the number of visits, save time and reduce emissions. Green Buildings Our new corporate head office, TNT Centre, located at Taurusavenue in Hoofddorp, near Amsterdam, is our blueprint for sustainable building in the future. From

TNT & Planet Me the start, our objectives for the new office were clear: * to create an open, flexible and inspiring work environment * to design and construct a sustainable office as tangible proof that TNT is serious about its ambition to significantly reduce CO2 * to lower costs Completed in early 2011, the new office lies at the heart of our committed, responsible and ambitious organisation. The building, in which visiting partners and colleagues from all over the world can work and connect everywhere throughout the building, will play an important role in helping the new Express organisation reach its goals.

Five projects are currently being piloted in a number of European cities: * TNT Bundling - where deliveries into inner city areas from various independent TNT entities are “bundled” together in a depot on a city’s outskirts before final delivery into the city centre. * City Distribution Centre - where third parties with a limited number of day-time inner-city stops deliver their goods to a TNT depot outside the city boundary and whereby TNT Express acts as a subcontractor to complete the “last mile” delivery. * Innight Distribution - where TNT Express volumes are shifted from day to night, decreasing day-time congestion and allowing customers more time during the day to focus on core activities.
