Marco Winter

DEAR MDBC MEMBERS, FRIENDS AND CONTACTS,

of the Economic Transformation Programme.

At MDBC’s 15th Anniversary last November, we celebrated the healthy economic relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands. During the middle of February, when Malaysia’s trade and investment figures over 2011 were presented, it became clear that the Netherlands has maintained its strong position (please see page 5).

The MDBC also started 2011 well, with our well-attended and very positive New Year’s gathering (pages 13, 20 and 21).

Malaysia’s economic figures over 2011 as presented by the Ministry of International Trade & Industry are certainly positive, and the outlook was further improved with the statistics released by other institutions such as Bank Negara Malaysia and PEMANDU, the latter explaining the results

On a personal note, at this moment I am delighted to share with you my first-hand experiences with the Government’s interest in maintaining or rather, expanding the local talent pool. Having lived and worked in Malaysia since 1993, I was one of the first foreign men to apply and obtain a ‘reverse’ spouse working visa in 1995/96 (foreign man married to a Malaysian woman). Due to red-tape and long delays surrounding a permanent residence application, a PR always seemed far out of reach.

But then last year first MIDA and subsequently the set-up of Talent Corporation provided new opportunities for foreign talents to remain in Malaysia without the hassle of applying (or renewing) professional working visas. Especially the Resident Pass (RP) offers a great option for foreign expats. Due to my work for MDBC and my long-term ties to Malaysia, I was however immediately offered a PR instead. The whole process took only four months, with great support from TalentCorp along the way, and excellent service at and by Immigration Department in Putrajaya. So here I am with my Malaysian red IC, and with appreciation I can recommend you to check out www.talentcorp.com.my to see what your options are! 3

Vice versa, Dutch exports to Malaysia increased by 6.4% in 2011 to a total amount of RM 3.6 billion. Direct foreign investment from the Netherlands into Malaysia also grew by 8.1% in 2011, tallying up to an amount of RM 1. 1 billion in total. MEMBERS’ NEWS KLM introduces Meet & Seat

At the beginning of February, KLM launched their Meet & Seat program, making KLM the first airline to integrate social networking in its regular flight process. Passengers with a reservation can link their Facebook or LinkedIn profiles to the flight they will be on, in order to see who else is on board. They can decide what personal information from their Facebook or LinkedIn account they would like to share with other passengers.

Erik Varwijk, Managing Director KLM: “This new service connects passengers and aims to give them a more inspirational journey.” Meet & Seat is available using Manage My Booking on intercontinental flights only though for now, only on pilot project flights from Amsterdam to San Francisco, New York and São Paulo. Shortly afterwards, it will roll out to other intercontinental destinations.

Logica recognized as leader in sustainable technology services Logica has been placed in the leaders’ quadrant of the Verdantix Green Quadrant Technology Services 2012 report. It was named along with three other companies as offering the most integrated and holistic set of sustainability services to buyers. Logica was recognised in the report for being a leader due to the delivery of a wide collection of innovative, joined up solutions and internal cost cutting sustainability measures.

Logica is one of only four firms awarded the top score for its carbon management programme, which helped the firm to close large project wins such as the implementation of the SIRA sustainability reporting tool for the UK Ministry of Defence.

The report provides a detailed, fact-based comparison of 17 of the leading sustainable technology service providers globally and recognises Logica’s pre-built renewable energy management system that facilitates integration of wind energy to the grid.

“Sustainability continues to be a focus area for Logica so being recognised as a leader by Verdantix is a great achievement,” said Melba Foggo, Global Sustainability Services Leader at Logica.

“In tune with Dulux’s new global brand identity, the KUL SIGN Festival 2012 also promotes positive changes in the world we live in and touches the lives of those around us. This is done through the channeling of a beneficial platform that allows artists, youths and individuals to articulately convey their message in a productive manner against unnecessary vandalism that serves only to churn negative results,” added Goh.

The “Start Fresh” graffiti challenge made its way into the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest graffiti in Malaysia; exceeding last year’s record of 450 meters.

Logica was also rated as “best in class” for its energy and carbon management, low carbon transport and smart metering services.

AkzoNobel’s “Start Fresh Kuala Lumpur” AkzoNobel reached out to the community yet again through the sponsorship of KUL SIGN 2012. Organized by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in an effort to recognize graffiti artists and give them an opportunity to contribute their talent to the city, the Dulux “Start Fresh Kuala Lumpur” wall mural creative challenge held on 25th February 2012 at the Sungai Klang riverbank, bears witness to the gifted talents of 7 local and international graffiti artists.

main agenda is to give back to society and the city of Kuala Lumpur through this artistic display of colors. Apart from the beautification idea, it also aims to educate the public on Green Sustainable efforts through the use of Dulux Weathershield Keep Cool TM paint which is low odor, low VOC and enables energy savings of up to 15%, thus mitigating the effects of global warming,” says CW Goh, General Manager of Deco Malaysia.

Visitors to the festival were able to acquire free colour consultation service at the AkzoNobel booth and enjoy the fun-filled games and activities organised by AkzoNobel.

This creative challenge, which is part of the KUL SIGN Festival 2012, aims to further boost the city’s image as a center that promotes avenues for artistic expression in a positive manner. “As the main sponsor for the KUL SIGN Festival 2012, AkzoNobel’s

The design of these 7 gifted local and international graffiti artists who took part in this challenge, reflect the essence of “Start Fresh” which underlined the importance of paint as a catalyst for positive transformation and the use of colors as an avenue for a “Fresh Start”. 7

MEMBERS’ NEWS EuroAsia helping to make KL more accessible Four out of the twenty four Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations on the Ampang line have recently been implemented with disabledfriendly facilities. Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd infrastructure development director Nor Hasan Ismail said the four stations were Pandan Jaya, Pandan Indah, Cahaya and Cempaka, all of which were expected to benefit an estimated 15,000 disabled commuters. Nor Hasan said the disabledfriendly facilities include ramps, elevators, tactile tiles and wheel-

chair-lifts. He added that the four stations were the first batch to receive disabled-friendly upgrades whereas the remaining twenty stations would be equipped with disabled-friendly facilities by the end of this year. ING Insurance has unveiled its new series called INGeasi For You, comprising three all-in-one, flexible investment-linked insurance packages that offer protection and investment options to suit one’s needs at the different life stages. Designed with simplicity in mind, the three packages - Discover, Achieve and Build - offer customers financial solutions to match their needs when they graduate and join the working world, or as they advance on their career paths or as they start a family and have to plan for their future and that of their loved ones. Bruce Hodges, Deputy CEO of ING Insurance Berhad said that ING Insurance recognised the growing popularity of products that combine the protection and investment elements. This is evidenced by the strong growth of the investment-linked insurance segment of the life insurance industry in recent years. “Customers just starting out in the working world, in particular, are drawn to these products because they can start on a plan with an affordable premium and later top up as their income rises,” he said. The company kicked off the launch of INGeasi For You by introducing a Facebook applica-

tion that allows users to meet their future self, virtually. The application is designed to replicate the Facebook user’s profile and show their future in 5, 10 and 20 years based on their chosen goals and dreams. The application can be viewed and played at apps.facebook.com/future-you. The Discover package is tailored for those in their early 20s and just starting out in the workforce. It offers basic protection and healthcare coverage at affordable monthly rates. The Achieve package is targeted at those in their late 20s and early 30s, offering increased protection coverage and more savings. Additionally, the package also provides specific coverage against female illnesses. The third package Build is designed for families. It provides extensive coverage along with a yearly income benefit in the event the breadwinner is no longer able to provide for the family. The INGeasi For You packages also provide consumers the flexibility to choose from existing combinations of local and global investment linked insurance funds to suit their changing financial needs and risk tolerance. 11

MDBC EVENTS M4M: Business on the Go MDBC invited members to our first Members-for-Members (M4M) event for 2012 entitled “Business on the Go”. With devices enabling us to access and process work now readily available to most people, and with the extensive availability of internet connections, businesses are no longer confined to the office. This means that more of us are doing business while on the go. MDBC therefore organized this M4M event with the theme “Business on the Go” for those who wanted to learn more about the technologies and solutions that are keeping us in touch and productive while mobile. Held at the Regus Kuala Lumpur Central Plaza office, experts were

invited from a variety of companies to share valuable and practical tips. Speakers and topics for this M4M: 1. Regus, Lion Kraaibeek: “Office Facilities Worldwide” 2. LACODEX, Marco Bisschop: “Making your company Mobile Friendly” 3. KLM, Estee Ng: “Travel and Business” 4. Exact Software, Brian Cheong: “Financial Administration on the Go” 5. GREEN BOARD MDBC member company Eco Outdoor focuses on bringing to market Outdoor Lifestyle Solutions based around sustainable design and materials for use in the commercial and residential market. Of particular note is their Atlantis Gro2 Wall v3 Green Walls which may be used as vertical gardens or to help create a green building facade. Let’s start with the basics shall we? What are green walls? It is a wall, either free-standing or part of a building, that is partially or completely covered with vegetatian. In some cases, they may also be covered in soil or an inorganic growing medium. These green walls, or vertical gardens are cropping up in a lot of cities these days. In addition to transforming cold, concrete urban facades into vibrant jungles, they also help deliver more practical benefits such as eco - system services and green infrastructures. Numerous sites around the world have been adding these living structures onto walls (both inside and out) to public buildings, hotels, offices, and most notably, a multi level car park (Westblaak) in Rotterdam.

And what exactly is a Gro-Wall? Well, it’s a modular vertical garden system which is easily created utilizing natural soil mixes to retain nutrients. It enables localized moisture retention and access to individual plants, creating optimum conditions for a successful vertical garden. Launched at the IGEM event in September last year, Eco Outdoor Director Chris Kooijman commented, “Our Vertical Garden solutions from Atlantis allow us to design and install vertical gardens in various Indoor and Outdoor settings with great flexibility. The aim is to bring nature back into our cities, which has amazing ecological benefits for everybody concerned and we have the ability to customise the design, plants and strength of the system to suit any requirement, with the additional benefit of ease of maintenance for our clients”. Structural media, such as the Atlantis Grow Wall, can be manufactured into various sizes, shapes and thicknesses. These media also have an advantage in that they can be made to have a higher or lower water holding capacity depending on the plant selection for the wall.

Eco Outdoor & Green Walls

Utilized in an indoor setting, these products can also be used to create a “green” environment

You can also have pH and EC’s customized to suit the plants and are easily handled for maintenance and repalcements. They are the most robust option for a living wall for both interior and exterior applications. An active living wall actively pulls or forces air through the plants leaves, roots and growth medium of the wall and then into the buildings HVAC system to be recirculated throughout the building. Unfortunately, current building codes still require that all standard air filtration equipment should be installed even with the presence of a living wall installation. This means that active living walls do not improve air quality to the point that the installation of other air quality filtration systems may be removed to provide a cost savings. In urban environments, these walls can also help reduce the overall temperatures of buildings. Plant surfaces, as a result of transpiration, do not rise more than 4 - 5 ˚C above the ambent and are sometimes cooler. They are also a means for water reusage. Plants help to purify slightly polluted water by absorbing dissolved nutrients. Also showcased by EcoOutdoor during the IGEM event last year

was the Dutch Royal Tencate artificial grass. TenCate grass is the global market leader in the field of synthetic turf fibers. Utilized for a variety of sports, TenCate focuses on the turf blades which are an important component of the synthetic turf pitch. This is because they provide the look and feel and are responsible for important performance characteristics like ball roll and sliding friendliness, making the quality of the turf blades essential. Used in conjunction with the Atlantis Turf Cell and Flo - Grid components which can be used to create parking surfaces, access roads and driveways, it can be used to help decrease the ambient temperature and the amount of airborne pollutants being added to the Ozone layer - things that traditional materials such as concrete, bitumen, stone and tiles do. The elimination of traditional storm water collection systems required by impermeable paved areas also provides an immediate cost saving when installing this solution. All together, these EcoOutdoor products are like a breath of fresh air, helping to create a more friendly and sustainable environment in the middle of any city. 17

EMBASSY NEWS 2012 Agenda

Embassy Activities World Press Photo Exhibition First and foremost, we are proud to announce that the World Press Photo Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was once again a great success this year. This highly anticipated event presented the public with a striking collection of over 160 award-winning press photographs from all over the world. A total number of 5,691 photographers from 125 countries including Malaysia participated in the contest, submitting over 108,000 entries in this 54th edition of the WPPh. Out of these entries, 162 winning photos were on display from 54 prize winners with 23 nationalities. The exhibition opening in Malaysia received a large amount of mainstream media attention and simultaneously inspired many more Malaysian journal-

ists to participate in the future. The World Press Photo will hopefully also continue to contribute to public debate in Malaysia and shine a positive light on the Netherlands as a whole, highlighting our commitment to amongst others press freedom. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to TNT Express for their generous contribution towards the creation of the 2011 edition, as well as to Karen Severijnen for her leadership, hard work and concerted dedication in the organisation and coordination of the World Press Photo in Malaysia this year. Besides Kuala Lumpur, the exhibition was also organised in Kota Kinabalu, Malacca and Penang. In conclusion, we would like to thank MDBC members for attending the private viewings in KL and Penang.

On page 5 you have already been able to read the Malaysian 2011 trade and investment figures and that the Netherlands has maintained its high rankings in these economic figures for Malaysia. In continuation of this positive news at the start of this year, we are pleased to cite our ambitious agenda for 2012, which will feature a range of anticipated activities inclusive of scheduled visits by leading Dutch companies from various sectors. Important events on the itinerary will incorporate the visit of a business delegation for the EUAsia Biomass Best Practices and Business Partnering Conference 2012 this early May. Another major event is the upcoming World Gas Conference, which is to be held in Kuala Lumpur in June and will attract a large number of delegates from the Netherlands and countries worldwide. Together with MDBC, we will also be welcoming at least six large student groups from the Netherlands during the first half of the year. All students are invited to attend a joint briefing session at ‘The Gateway’ presented by the MDBC and the Embassy.

Untapped international potential The cooperation agreement for the world’s largest enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project, signed on January 15 by both Shell and Petronas reaffirms the special relationship between the Netherlands and Malaysia. This significant development secures Shell’s longstanding operations in Malaysia for another thirty years. Under the new EOR PSCs, the upstream arms of Shell Malaysia - Sarawak Shell Bhd, Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd, Shell Sabah Selatan Sdn Bhd and partner PETRONAS Carigali (operator) - will continue the development of a total of nine oil fields in the Baram Delta and four oil fields in the North Sabah development area. The recovery of over 750 million barrels of oil from the two PSC areas is foreseen. The EOR PSCs were signed in the presence of the Hon. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The three remaining signees included the President and Chief Executive of Petronas, Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, Chief Executive Officer of Shell, Peter Voser and the President of PETRONAS Carigali, Datuk Abdullah Karim. The EOR projects are pivotal to the agenda efforts of Petronas, particularly the optimization of oil extraction from mature fields in Malaysia in order to maintain or increase the level of national production to cater to industrial needs and promote natural growth.

EMBASSY NEWS A greener future in sustainable construction, housing and design The recent success of the GREENBUILD ASIA 2012 Exhibition & Conference in Kuala Lumpur (1416 February) highlights another effective showcasing of innovations and achievements in the field of sustainable development in Malaysia, namely that of green construction. The Malaysian move towards sustainability in the real-estate sector has been nothing short of a success, ushering in the establishment of a Malaysian green rating system in 2009.

Malaysia is in the midst of its very own green revolution and continues to successfully cater to the increased demand for environmentally-friendly buildings equipped with green appliances, systems and technologies. The architectural wants and needs of various national and multinational industries in Malaysia have undergone substantial transformation in order to counter threats of rising energy prices, ecological devastation and natural resource limits. Malaysia is thus proud to note that local Malaysian Dr. Ken Yeang is Southeast Asia’s most celebrated green building architect. It is also paramount to note that Malaysia was a key diplomatic player in guaranteeing the adoption of sustainable development as a primary principle promulgated by the Rio Declaration.

Malaysia has continued to effectively enforce its pledge as a signatory, which is evident in its increased construction of lowenergy and zero-energy buildings in the country. On the home front, Malaysia is also expecting to launch important legislative developments concerning the domestic use of solar powered units for home owners, already initiated in 2011. The Government anticipates a soft-loan scheme that will secure every Malaysian household with solar panels plated on every rooftop. In order to overcome the reluctance of banks to finance this purchase due to the calculated risk of customer defaulters, Malaysia is in the process of developing a second market for solar gadgets. As one of the most sustainable nations in the world, the Netherlands also strives to maintain its position at the forefront of pioneering technological advances and innovative intentions. The Netherlands boasts an unparalleled tradition of expertise in the field of environmental protection and sustainable energy and possesses a quality building decree standard with a background in EU directives. The Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC), initiated by the Dutch building industry itself, was established in 2008. There was strong need for the endorsement of the concept of sustainability quantification and the establishment of national green building regulations in accordance with international standards. In recent years, The Netherlands has rocketed to the top in the field of sustainable construction, which has contributed to its unremitting efforts in raising the benchmark of green building

initiatives at global level. In order to achieve its climate objectives, the Netherlands continues to take the lead in developing unmatched renewable energy technologies and development processes fit to “green-wash” domestic and international building industries. The scale and speed of climate change in today’s world is unprecedented and the demand for applied knowledge and technology in the field of sustainable energy use, energy conservation and clean use of fossil fuels is evident across sectors world-wide. The Netherlands has made important headway in the fields of solar cell module development, wind farm aerodynamics, Green Gas by gasification of biomass, and carbon dioxide capture and storage. The Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) is among the top-rated in solar energy research in the world with a strong development focus on the next generation of photovoltaic systems. Over the last three decades, the Netherlands has supplied itself and the world with excellent high-standard solar collector systems, a development and implementation process that Dutch suppliers are continuing to advance in terms of efficiency, visual integration and product modularity. The Netherlands thus offers decades of expertise

in renewable energy technologies and is home to a plethora of global leading businesses and research and development (R&D) institutes. To facilitate all this, Cleantech Holland is the Dutch export-platform for sustainable technology products, concepts and innovations. The platform was initiated by the FME-CWM Association, the former Ministry of Economic Affairs and the former Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. One of the primary goals of Cleantech Holland is to develop international awareness around the opportunities associated with the Dutch clean technology sector abroad. In addition, the international cooperation between companies, governments and research institutions is encouraged. The export platform focuses on providing information and conducting research on market opportunities, trends, clients and projects abroad. The Netherlands strictly endorses the need for sustainable change through innovation and leadership and will continue to set new standards in order to realise its transition to a fully sustainable energy structure. We pride ourselves on our reputation for excellence and will continue to enhance our special relations with Malaysia. We envision a better, smarter and greener world!

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Largest SIP intake ever! With a group of 50 Dutch students, the MDBC Student Internship Program (SIP) reached its largest ever intake this February. It shows that an increasing number of MDBC member-companies sees the opportunities and value that such a motivated student can bring to the organisation in terms of project management, business development and interaction between employees on the workfloor. After all, the Dutch students are very used to case studies and problem-solving as part of their education. Cultural Briefings Welcoming and guiding such a large group also means that MDBC has to step up its efforts to ensure the students are wellequipped and can make a good

start with the internship, providing the most value to the internship companies. Therefore MDBC now organises more intense cultural briefings for the students shortly after their arrival. Student Internship Manager Jolande Jonge Poerink and Executive Director Marco Winter explained in-depth about the do’s and especially the don’ts in Malaysia, on the values of Malaysians, and on the expectations of the companies. On top of this, we brought in Marie Tseng of the company Cultural Impact to work with the students in her workshop “CrossCultural Encounters”.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Intern Interview - Sven Janson

Sven Janson with his Chur Associates teammates

Sven Janson, a law student at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, was bored with the internship opportunities available back home in the Netherlands. Craving a taste of something different, the international internships caught his eye and after a discussion with the university’s co-ordinator, he decided on traveling to Malaysia for a stint with Chur Associates. Coming to Malaysia having left the Netherlands when it was -11 degrees, Sven immediately noticed the lush greenery and clear blue skies. He was lucky enough to start off his stay in Malaysia with a couple of free days. Initially reluctant to start work after his mini holiday, Sven quickly found himself enjoying his internship as well. Chur Associates is a young and dynamic law firm and had quite a lot of different tasks prepared for him right from the start. As Sven is active in corporate and property law, they started him out with several agreements to look through, providing him with an impression of how things worked at the firm. After an initial adjustment period, it was time to roll up his sleeves and get really hands on. Given his own file involving a future investment scheme, Sven is enjoying the ability to see clients

and really have to dig into a certain subject to deliver the best possible solution to the client. When asked about his work, Sven said, “I now have the responsibility for a file which makes you more eager to deliver good work. I can’t really discuss my file in detail as it is private and confidential. The firm has also given me a number of tasks which consists of a variety of matters from clerical work, including writing letters and making dossiers, to presenting on legal issues, contract drafting and involvement in cases that the firm is currently handling.” He added, “The law firm where I work is all based on team performance which also means that I get to do a lot of fun stuff during the team building activities. In the first full week I worked here, we went for a team building event in a beautiful park just outside of Kuala Lumpur. It’s nice to do some sightseeing during work time since the weekends just aren’t enough to see everything this area has to offer!” Sven is also fully utilizing this opportunity for discovery. “The weekends around here are filled with trips to other cities and countries. If you stay in KL for the weekend, I can assure you that you won’t be bored with the nightlife.”

The Intern Interview - Jill Schreuder Jill Schreuder, a student at Windescheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, the Netherlands, recently arrived in Kuala Lumpur to begin her internship with MDBC member company Endemol Malaysia. Endemol is a worldwide network of leading entertainment companies and is the largest digital production and independent television company in the world. The company’s creative teams around the world are continuously developing new ideas that are shared via the Headquarters of Endemol in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to all Endemol companies around the world. Part of Jill’s responsibilities during her time here will be to help Endemol Malaysia gain information on formats from from the Endemol HQ and share them with the local team. Endemol has a growing library of over 2,300 formats, or shows, across genres that include entertainment, reality TV, game shows, animation, comedy and drama. Jill is also tasked with looking for new and interesting formats in Premier, the Intranet site of Endemol, which have the potential for development in Malaysia. Assuredly, her exploration and discovery of a new culture and way of Jill Schreuder at the Endemol Malaysia office

life will aid her in brainstorming for new format ideas. “I am in Kuala Lumpur for 2 weeks now and I have discovered a lot of things. My friendly colleagues helped me to integrate within the company and I have made a lot of friends with whom I discover the culture and life within Malaysia and its surroundings.” When asked about why she chose to do her final internship with Endemol Malaysia, she replied that it would help her improve her knowledge and help her become successful. She said, “I want to develop myself more and more every day. I want to learn as much as I can and I think that it is important to do what you like to do. For me it is important to force challenges and to solve the difficulties within a job.” In addition to the tasks above, Jill is also responsible for presenting the new shows. In addition to the regular PowerPoint presentation, she also has to assemble a show reel, an introduction movie of a new and interesting program. Furthermore, she is tasked with assisting Endemol Malaysia with improving communications related to knowledge and information sharing between the local entity and the Endemol group. This report will contain a business orientation with an internal and external analysis of the company, a competitor analysis, target group analysis and stakeholder analysis. In addition, it will contain the answer to the research question, which will be divided into three sub questions. Also included are a financial plan, an implementation plan and recommendations for Endemol Malaysia. 25

MDBC PENANG Visit to the Kulim Hi-Tech Park

Kulim Technology Park Corporation (KTPC) was pleased to welcome MDBC’s delegation led by MDBC Penang Chapter representative John Benoist at its office in KHTP Business Centre on 15 February. KTPC President, Haji Muhamad Sobri Osman expressed his pleasure of receiving the delegation and spoke on business opportunities awaiting MDBC members in Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP), which expand beyond high-tech manufacturing. This was followed by Haji Annuar Mohd Saffar, Vice President Industrial Development & Research, who briefed the delegation on the current status of the development in KHTP especially on the park’s expansion mode, inwards investment and skilled workers creation.

Today, KHTP has attracted 21 major manufacturing tenants (multinationals and local companies), 9 industrial tenants supporting the major tenants, 3 R&D companies/organisations, 5 Smalland medium companies, and 33 service support companies that include several Fortune 500 companies. The latest big manufacturing company to come on board is Panasonic Energy who has taken up some 63 acres of prime industrial land in Phase 2 to build their solar panel and application manufacturing plant.

KTPC President and Vice President

Overall, there was an active discussion covering the subjects of business opportunities, mutual cooperation, the creation of matching human capital to meet industry needs, as well as business incentives that await investors who operate in KHTP.

One of the key advantages that KHTP has is the exceptionally strong government support of the Malaysian Federal Government that continues to fund the project. The Kedah State Government, meanwhile, as a beneficiary of the project in Kedah, has managed the project via its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kulim Technology Park Corporation since 1993.

KHTP, which was incepted in 1996, is now a favourite investment location for multinationals and local manufacturing companies with high-tech activities. Even supporting companies and service providers are gradually realising the long-term potential of locating in KHTP to benefit from its future expansion.

Besides offering larger pieces of industrial land for high-tech manufacturing and its related activities, KHTP also provides the unique service of its own local authority which cuts down facility setup time by as much as 50%. For example, the first Intel plant was set up in only 7 months, whereas, First Solar’s first 4 plants

MDBC members getting an overview of the park from PR Manager Patrick Teh

were completed in about 1.5 years! Semiconductor wafer fabrication plants will also find that KHTP is really conducive for their opera-

Well-arranged lunch as a conclusion

tions because uniquely the park boasts of its own power plant that generates very stable and high quality electricity; provides plentiful clean water with a dedicated treatment plant and reservoirs; and, moreover, KHTP is a

location that is devoid of tremors or earthquakes. Currently, SilTerra, Infineon Technologies and Fuji Electric Semiconductor are producing semiconductor wafers from their manufacturing plants in KHTP. KHTP is also about the full integration of its overall development. Besides creating job opportunities, there is also ample housing and amenities within and very near the park: Primary and secondary schools, university colleges, a polytechnic, hospital, government departments, hypermarket, a recreational park, hotels and motels, as well as, many eateries. Penang being only about about 40 minutes’ drive away via the superb Butterworth-Kulim Expressway is also another reason why KHTP has now attracted over 26,000 workers to its precinct. EU / EUMCCI EUMCCI Celebrates 2012 Europa Awards The EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EUMCCI) showcased the excellence in creativity and innovation of European and Malaysian businesses at its Europa Awards Gala night on 29 February 2012. The event was a platform for EUMCCI to promote and showcase the growth of creativity and innovation among European and Malaysian companies. EUMCCI Chairman David Jones said, “The awards are an acknowledgement of the contribution and collaboration of EU and Malaysian companies working to improve and increase trade between the two territories, using creativity and innovation as their tools.” Minister of International Trade, YB Dato’ Seri Mustapa Mohamed, was the keynote speaker, gracing the event for the second year in a row. The Minister recognised the importance of trade and investment between Malaysia and Europe, stating “the relationship between Malaysia and Europe will continue to grow, especially with the successful conclusion of the FTA negotiations. Our two regions have a great deal to offer each other and will benefit greatly from continued collaboration.”

As always, the Europa Awards are given out in these three categories: 1. Excellence in Trade/Investment into the EU by a Malaysian company; 2. Highest Excellence in Trade/ Investment into Malaysia by a European Investor; and 3. Long-Term Excellence in EUMalaysian Trade and Investment. This year’s panel of judges consisted of Andrea Chua (Executive Director - People, Performance and Culture, KPMG), Yogaretnam A/L Kanagandram (General Manager - Risk Management, Asian Institute of Finance), Chris Tan (Director - NKEA, PEMANDU) and Dr. Geoffrey Williams (CEO, OWW Consulting). Judges focused on four areas of measurement for the awards: financial results (based on ratios rather than absolute figures so as to disregard size of the company), innovative and creative business practices, attractive employment and sustainability. None of the shortlisted companies in the first category “Excellence in Trade/Investment into the EU by a Malaysian company” met the stringest conditions required for a win. While DiGi Telecommunications topped the second category: “Excellence in Trade/Investment The SHELL Malaysia team with their Award

l to r: Frank Saing (Head, Corporate Affairs, SHELL Malaysia), YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Digi Telecommunications representative and David Jones

into Malaysia by a European Investor”, we would also like to give due recognition to MDBC Member company AkzoNobel / ICI Paints for being shortlisted. In the third and main category: “Long Term Excellence in EU Malaysia trade and investment”, Shell Malaysia emerged victorious. In order to win, Shell had to show exemplary business excellence for the past 3 years. It also had to show that it has had a business presence in Malaysia for at least 10 years. In the judges report for Shell, the 4 areas of measurement of the awards were announced as follows: Financial Excellence: The winning company faired very well especially in the ratio of profit per employee. (Judges considered ratios rather than absolute figures for Gross Profit Margin, Net Profit Margin, Return on Investment and Net Profit per Employee).

Sustainability: The company has demonstrated a consistent and long standing commitment to sustainable development and an exemplary level of transparency in its sustainability reports for Malaysia for over a decade. Attractive Employment: The winning company offers unique benefits promoting diversity and communications programs. These trade missions are another way for the Chamber to provide EUMCCI Corporate Partners, local Malaysian stakeholders, associations and companies the chance for capacity building, to observe

and learn standards and policies and create new business opportunities. The missions will be focused on specific project sectors. The first mission, to the Czech Republic and Poland, will focus on green technology, the second mission to Finland and Estonia, concentrating on ICT, innovation society and clean technology cluster. Taking place in April and June 2012 respectively, the Chamber’s objectives are to promote the

focus area sectors and relevant initiatives to facilitate economic and trade cooperation, as well as widening the knowledge of local stakeholders on best practices and standards from Europe. Of the countries to be visited, it is interesting to note that Finland is a prime example of PPP and is the world’s top clean cluster and innovation society. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic has had great interest in Malaysia for events like IGEM and specific industry sectors such as Automotive, Green Technology and ICT.

erator project called GREENEVO which focuses on environmentally sound solutions and technologies. With this in mind, these trade missions are a great opportunity for Malaysian companies to make valuable contacts within Europe for future business opportunities and investment.
