a new netherlands ambassador; but it’s all in the continuity! In the previous edition of MDBConnects former Netherlands Ambassador Paul Bekkers looked back at his 4 years in Malaysia and the positive Malaysia Netherlands ties. Paul also highlighted that it was his privilege to work with the MDBC during these years. Indeed the Netherlands Embassy - MDBC relationship and cooperation has been (and is) excellent! From our side it’s an honour and an encouragement to work with such a positive Ambassador and team, and to initiate activities together to highlight the Malaysian - Dutch cooperation and the Dutch business operations in Malaysia. One such initiative is of course the MDBC Sustainability Awards. We look forward to organising the 3rd edition of our muchrespected Awards event soon and to once again share the best Sustainability and CSR practices of our member-companies. In the meantime we have welcomed new Ambassador Harry Molenaar in Malaysia, who has immediately continued the interest and involvement in MDBC by attending our recent Board of Directors meeting, joining

our recent MDBC events in KL and in Penang and by succeeding Paul as the Chief Judge for MSA’13! With such an active support we have no doubt that we can look forward to sustaining the excellent ties between the Embassy and MDBC. Stability and continuity have been and are important for the MDBC. Therefore it is my pleasure to announce that we just commemorated the 10th anniversary of Marco Winter as MDBC Executive Director. During these 10 years our Council has grown substantially, e.g. in terms of memberships (from 40 to 200+), activities & special programmes (such as SIP, MSA and MDBC Penang) and exposure & publications. MDBC has a good standing in the industry and enjoys positive relations and networks with all stakeholders, inclusive of the Malaysian Government and its agencies.

MDBC held its Annual General Meeting over financial year 2012 at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur Hotel recently. There was a full program that evening which included a dialogue with then Director of Strategic Planning & Policy Advocacy Division of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), S. Sivasuriyamoorthy. Mr. Siva was appointed as the Investment Counselor for the Consulate General of Malaysia (Investment Section) in Frankfurt Germany with effective date 1 August 2013. Included among the countries that fall under his purview of investment will be The Netherlands.

Several years ago, Mr. Siva was also MIDA’s Director responsible for investments from The Netherlands so he was the best person to meet and brief MDBC members on the latest developments in the Malaysian investment climate (such as new incentives, new

It was also an opportunity for him to prepare for his new posting by recieving members’ feedback on the Malaysian investment climate, benchmarking of Malaysia vs other ASEAN countries and getting their input as an investor in Malaysia on what is important to members in their decision making process. Well received and packed with information sharing from both sides, the dialogue with Siva was followed by the launch of the Netherlands Embassy “Responsible Practices for Better Business Manual” app. As a follow up to their hard copy publication, the Embassy made the decision to develop the online app version of their influential publication. Launched by H.E. Paul Bekkers (former Dutch Ambassador to Malaysia, now posted to Warsaw, Poland) and Anne de Graaf (Head of the Embassy’s Trade Department), the app is sure to prove useful to local organizations, especially those looking to partner with Dutch companies. Do keep a look out for it on the Apple App Store! (also see page 25).

Not content with one launch, we decided to do a two for one deal. The MDBC Sustainability Awards (MSA) 2013 were also launched that same evening with H.E. Paul Bekkers and MDBC Chairman Dato’ Jaffar Indot doing the honors and unveiling the new logo for this year’s MSA. A brief Jeopardy! style game followed which led to the unveiling of the MSA categories for this year: * Best Sustainability Communication * Best Corporate Governance & Ethics * Best Sustainable Workplace * Best Sustainable Supply Chain Management OR Logistics Project (Open to members and non - members). For more information about the launch of the MSA, please see our previous edition MDBCONNECTS 2013 - 2 or check the MDBC website. Wrapping up this eventful evening was the MDBC AGM over financial year 2012 and some opportunities for networking with dinner and refreshments by the pool.

than policies shape the energy system: oil and coal remain part of the energy mix but renewable energy also grows. By the 2070s, solar becomes the world’s largest energy source. The scenarios “highlight the need for businesses and government to find new ways to collaborate, fostering policies that promote the development and use of cleaner energy and improve energy efficiency,” Dr. Khong said.

Dr. Khong presenting Shell’s New Lens Scenarios.

SHELL NEW LENS SCENARIO This quarter MDBC members were invited to an engagement on the latest Shell energy scenario entitled “New Lens Scenario: Mountains and Oceans” with Shell’s Chief Political Analyst, Dr. Cho Oon Khong at the Malaysian Petroleum Club in Petronas Tower 2. Dr. Khong advises on political trends and political risk, and leads the external environment assessments for Shell’s country reviews. He joined the Shell scenarios team in 1994 and has led a wide range of country scenario projects over the years. He has also worked on a range of scenario projects with international organizations, governments, universities, research institutions and business companies in Asia, Europe, the US and Africa. He is a member of the advisory panel, Evian Group, IMD, Lausanne and of the UK government’s Asia Task Force. Shell Scenarios ask “what if” questions to explore alternative views of the future and create plausible stories around them. “These scenarios show how the choices made by governments, businesses and invididuals in the next few years will have a major impact on the way the future unfolds,” said Dr. Khong. They consider long term trends in economics, energy supply and demand, geopolitical shifts and social change as well as motivating factors that drive change.

Shell has been using scenarios since the early 1970s to allow generations of leaders make better business decisions. Over time, the Shell Scenarios have gained a global following among governments, academia and other businesses. They have helped deepen understanding of how the world might appear decades ahead. With the world’s population headed toward 9 billion at mid - century and millions of people climbing out of poverty, global energy demand could increase by as much as 80% by 2050. That’s according to Shell’s latest scenarios. The scenarios provide a detailed analysis of current trends and their likely trajectory into the future. The first scenario, labelled “mountains”, sees a strong role for government and the introduction of firm and far-reaching policy measures. These help to develop more compact cities and transform the global transport network. New policies unlock plentiful natural gas resources - making it the largest global energy source by the 2030s - and accelerate carbon capture and storage technology, supporting a cleaner energy system.

Together, these scenarios look further into the future than many other outlooks and highlight some surprising possible developments. Both see global emissions of carbon dioxide dropping to near zero by 2100. One factor is the increasing use of technology that takes CO2 out of the atmosphere (by burning biomass to produce electricity then storing emissions underground). Although the Oceans scenario sees a dramatic increase in solar power, it also envisions greater fossil fuel use and higher total CO2 emissions over the century than the Mountains scenario, which will likely have more impact on the world’s climate. The scenarios also highlight areas of public policy likely to have the greatest influence on the development of cleaner fuels and renewables, improvements in energy efficiency and on moderating greenhouse gas emissions. For more information about the Shell New Lens Scenarios, please visit the Shell website at www.shell.com/scenarios. MDBC members and guests enjoying some networking and light refreshments after the presentation

The second scenario, which Shell calls “oceans”, describes a more prosperous and volatile world. Energy demand surges, due to strong economic growth. Power is more widely distributed and governments take longer to agree on major decisions. Market forces rather MDBCONNECTS · 3RD ISSUE 2013

Visit to the Sime Darby IDEA House MDBC members were recently invited to the Sime Darby Idea House. The House is a socially, economically and environmentally responsive prototype dwelling that provides insight into future tropical living, showcasing the latest in sustainable architecture in its quest to become the first carbon neutral residence in Southeast Asia. Conceived as a test bed for new ideas, this house is a collaboration involving the world’s leading technology and solution providers - architects, engineers, landscaping designers, urbanists, contractors and suppliers. It brings together some of the best innovations, solutions and technology available from these companies in their respective field to improve energy efficiency in homes and reduce the consumption of limited resources. Sime Darby Idea House Green Ideas: *Selected Highlights Orientation, climactic responsiveness and solar energy The house is oriented to minimise heat gain and lower cooling loads. Its deep overhangs provide shade and

weather protection, reducing reliance on mechanical ventilation, cooling systems and its associated costs. The house will have photovoltaic cell technology to harness the sun’s rays as a renewable energy source. Rain / Grey water management “Grey water” from basins and showers is recycled to flush the WCs. Aerating the showers save 64 litres per day. Rainwater captured by the sloping roof is collected to irrigate the vegetation within the development. The water harvested is 100% recycled to cater for a family of five. Natural ventilation The open plan nature of the house, with sliding external and internal walls, capitalises on its ability to be cross ventilated. Orienting the living spaces in a southwesterly direction harnesses the prevailing southwest wind and reduces the need for artificial ventilation. Internal temperature and humidity levels were also lowered. For more information about the Sime Darby Idea house, please visit: www. simedarbyproperty.com.

AN INSIDE LOOK

AN INSIDE LOOK: DUTCH LADY MILK INDUSTRIES - RAHUL COLACO 50 years ago, on 28 May, 1963, Dutch Lady Malaysia was incorporated as a private joint stock limited company called Pacific Milk Industries (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The current dairy market leader here started with the production of a single product - sweetened condensed milk - and has since expanded to a full range of dairy products locally manufactured in its factory located in Petaling Jaya. Previously under Friesland Foods (a Netherlands based multinational cooperative that dates back to 1879), Dutch Lady Malaysia is currently a subsidiary of Royal Friesland Campina, which was formed in December 2008 as a result of the merger between Friesland Foods and Campina. Since its beginning, Dutch Lady has championed dairy nutrition for all Malaysians, with a special focus on the children. Their mission of “Helping Malaysians Move Forward in Life with Trusted Dairy Nutrition” drives them in creating a sustainable platform to inspire the local children. As a special celebration for their 50th anniversary, Dutch Lady Malaysia is giving away RM 1,500,000 to Malaysia’s young hopefuls. It is their belief that every child has the potential for greatness that has led them to provide this support. The money has been placed into the Dutch Lady Inspire Tomorrow Fund and will be made available to 50 selected children from all walks of life. The fund seeks to inspire Malaysian children, especially those underprivileged, “whom very often have the biggest dreams of all”.

At its helm as Managing Director during this special milestone is Rahul Colaco. A soft spoken gentleman with sharp intellect and a quick grasp of situations; he seems to get energized by the fast pace of this consumer centric business. Bringing with him 17 years of experience in multinational corporations across Europe and Asia, Rahul has held various senior positions in marketing, sales, purchasing and finance. He holds a degree in Commerce from Mumbai University and an MBA from the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland. MDBC managed to sit down with Rahul to discuss this significant anniversary. MDBC: 50 years is quite an achievement for any organization. What does this anniversary mean to you? Rahul: This is a special year for us. For the past 50 years, we have championed dairy nutrition for all Malaysians, especially for the children. More children grow up drinking Dutch Lady milk than any other brand and we know we are here because of the consumers (and our employees). We have an important impact on society and to celebrate we are giving back in our own unique way, by celebrating the youth of this country through our Dutch Lady Inspire Tomorrow Fund. Looking forward to the future 50 years, we will continue facilitating the development of society, by providing a platform for the children. MDBC: Dutch Lady has accomplished quite a lot since its humble beginnings.

Rahul with the Dutch Lady Marketing & Sales Conference 2011 group

What are some of the top accomplishments you’re particularly proud of? Rahul: Our overall impact on society is that Dutch Lady is synonymous with milk in Malaysia. We have been running a specific campaign since 2007 together with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on World Milk Day (held on 1 June), which provides us with an opportunity to focus attention on milk and celebrate all aspects of it; the natural origin, nutritional value, the economic importance of milk in rural areas as well as in the entire food chain. We have also done quite a lot to help educate people on the importance of nutrition for children, specifically through our school milk program. We are working with government entities such as the Ministry of Education to help teach nutrition to the people of Malaysia. We even go into the deep remote areas of Malaysia and the hard-to-reach places where it’s even more important to get the information to. We have also started a Dairy Development Program to help improve the quality and quantity of fresh milk here in Malaysia. Started in 2008 in cooperation with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the program brings Dutch dairy experts to Malaysia to conduct knowledge transfer to local farmers during workshops. The program has developed into a platform for farmers to network and share their ideas with the DVS officials and also equips farmers with a better understanding of safe practices and milking techniques. This all helps to improve the livelihoods of everyone involved in the dairy industry. Internally, we created a culture; we introduced a change program called Passion for Blue (PfB) which re-strategized our business focus and company development. PfB is unique in that it was innovatively designed to create and build a winning business culture within Dutch Lady. It focuses on strategy development as well as people development. Also CSR is integrated in everything we do. We want to help Malaysians move forward. CSR has a deeper significance for me, it’s not just showing that we do something; it’s doing something that will really help society.

AN INSIDE LOOK

MDBC: As an industry leader, it is sometimes difficult to remember that you have a responsibility to be innovative and new. Can you tell us about how Dutch Lady innovates? Rahul: A lot of it is driven by the expansion or changes in our portfolio. From Dutch

“We believe in the diversity of our people. In the management team alone we have 6 people from 5 different countries which is a melting pot of background diversity.” Baby Sweetened Condensed Milk (which we discontinued in 2011 because it was not in line with our commitment to improve the health of our customers), to the packaging we use, improving nutritional values and reducing sugar levels. In fact, there has been a 50% reduction in the sugar levels since 3 years ago; this adds up to about 3,000 tonnes less sugar annually. For us, it was a matter of figuring out how to do that without sacrificing the taste of the product. And a lot of it is through our Research and Development (R&D) findings. 1988 was a key year for us, it was the year we invented growing up milk with specialized ingredients and formulation. And in 1975 we launched UHT milk. These two are big pillars for us. We were pioneers in the industry for developing these two items. Also, we don’t have a sexy Google culture here, but we believe in the diversity of our people. In the management team alone we have 6 people from 5 different countries which is a melting pot of background diversity. Innovation is not just about a product, we were the first private sector company to offer 90 days of maternity leave to our employees, so you have to look at other aspects as well. Like safety. We look at the

safety of our employees through the lens of their children, like how will this affect your children if you don’t take care of yourself? Also, technology - what are consumers thinking. What flavor milk should be available? We have a continual improvement mindset. We were the first YouTube partner when they launched in Malaysia. We are beginning to also engage consumers more for innovation, there is more digital interaction. Consumers are happy and they are more engaged, there is an exchange of information. It allows us to create an emotional connection with our consumers which helps drive the loyalty they have to Dutch Lady. When Malaysians choose Dutch Lady, it’s an emotional choice. Its suitability, value and nutrition; moms know smart kids are not just academically smart but they also use their brain holistically. MDBC: Being at the helm of an organization like Dutch Lady at such an important milestone must be exciting. In addition to being able to enjoy the benefits of having done it right for the past 50 years, it also means you must look forward to the next 50 and lay the groundwork now. What do you see as the future of Dutch Lady in Malaysia? Rahul: For the next 50 years, it’s all about continual growth. There is a huge opportunity still here because even though we are the market leader, our market share is only 20%, so there’s definitely room to grow. We will continue to educate Malaysians in a fun and innovative way. The cycle of change is faster so we have to be more agile, doing it with fewer things, in a bigger and better way.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM THE INTERN INTERVIEW: Jeroen Nijsen Jeroen Nijsen is an Intercultural Communication Master student at the University of Utrecht who is currently doing his internship at Shell Malaysia’s corporate affairs department. Initially hesitant to begin his first office job, he reeled a bit at the idea of working in a cubicle, which he associated with a dronelike existence of an office worker, afraid that it would make him “just another cog in the machine,” he has since settled in and has started to see the benefits of working at such a large organization. Jeroen’s work activities are spread out across Shell Malaysia’s communication department. When asked about his responsibilities there he shared, “I am managing the Sustainable Development grants program, editorializing internal news stories and attending external events. However, most of my workload deals with the organization of the Shell Malaysia Innovation Summit which is to take place on 24 and 25 September. In general, the level of responsibilities that I am getting at Shell far surpasses

my expectations, which is great because the challenging work is very motivating. Besides, I believe that it would take me a year or more to gain the same learning experiences that I have had here if I were working in a less challenging environment.” Since Jeroen is doing this internship in the context of his Master’s degree, he has kept an eye out for cultural differences. His conclusion so far? “While you can generalize about things like directness, saving face and the conception of time, in the end, there are as many cultures as there are individuals. This is why I like to go out of the office and see something of the outside world during site visits and external meetings as I generally get to deal with a lot of different people in various capacities; also, the business lunches are usually quite good!” As for how all of this is affecting his distaste of being ‘another cog in the machine’? When Ben van Beurden (Director, Shell Downstream) came to Shell House for a townhall session recently, he casually skimmed over Shell operations in countries spanning every continent and Jeroen was able to catch When MDBC SIP Manager Jolande Jonge Poerink gave a presentation at Corlijn’s University, she immediately jumped at the chance of doing an internship here in Malaysia and she applied to join the program. As a result of the matchmaking process, MDBC paired Corlijn with AQ Services and after a Skype interview with AQ, she packed her bags and began her adventure here in May 2013.

THE INTERN INTERVIEW: Corlijn Steen Corlijn Steen is a facility management student at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. She is currently doing her internship with MDBC member company AQ Services International. Two years ago Corlijn first came to Asia and spent her summer in Indonesia. That trip made such an impact on her that it convinced her to visit the region again.

“I was assigned as an assistant business manager. My main responsibility is to manage the fieldwork for all the projects that have been assigned to me. During my placement I have been working for the Malaysian team and my goal is that AQ Services will allow me the opportunity to handle a project independently,” said Corlijn. AQ Services is a performance, research, coaching, training and consultancy firm with a strong focus on the front line. One of the products that AQ Services provides their clients is insight into the client’s performance; they do this by developing

a glimpse of the immense magnititude of Shell’s operations worldwide. “At that point, it hit home that even though I may contribute very little, it is still very exciting to know that I am part of such a mind boggingly massive enterprise.” He added, “Perhaps the most important realization for me is that it is not a bad thing to be a tiny part of a large organization, as long as I am reminded every now and then of all the groundbreaking things that are going on in the big picture. With that in mind, my cubicle isn’t so bad a first office after all.” tailored mystery shopping programs. Mystery shopping is the core activity of AQ Services. “Through this program, I have the opportunity to work in an environment where 14 different nationalities are employed. The differences in language, culture and behaviour is not always easy, but it is a great experience!” added Corlijn. Learning to balance her responsibilities between work and school assignments, she is enjoying the opportunity to further explore the region. When asked about it, Corlijn said, “I am currently living with three other Dutch interns in the city center. During the day, I am working with locals and in the evening, the other interns and I venture into the city. This combination makes my time in KL memorable. Doing my placement here not only shows the practical side of the theories in text books, but it also teaches me to work and collaborate with other cultures. It is a double beneficial experience to do a placement in Asia!” said Corlijn. MDBCONNECTS · 3RD ISSUE 2013

INNOVATION

Did you know....

Frequent travelers stuck at the airport during odd hours or catching a late flight know what its like to really need some coffee as a pick me up. Dutch coffee company Douwe Egberts set up a vending machine capable of picking up on facial movements and recognizing a yawn, prompting it to fill up a cup for you. The machine detects yawns using a

combination of Midi tunes and facial recognition software. Essentially what happens is that the facial recognition software can monitor different aspects of the face to set different settings like volume. If someone’s mouth is open wide enough, a certain level of noise is registered and the machine dispenses the coffee.

NETHERLANDS EMBASSY NEWS

Sit down with the new Ambassador

H.E. Harry Molenaar

Without needing much time to think about this, the Ambassador replied, “The overwhelming economic dynamics, as you can see from the construction activities and consumer spending around you. Although, I have to admit, my experiences are still limited to my first weeks in KL.” Referring to his meetings so far, he added, “Either representing business, diplomatic or government, all counterparts are equally positive about trade and economic opportunities. On a personal note, the freedom to move around freely comes as a big relief, almost a cultural shock after my work in Iraq where I was always accompanied by close protection.” The Ambassador has been enjoying exploring various places in KL and the typical lunches at the local wet market with his wife Dr. Loes Nas. A long way to get here… It took the Ambassador a long time to get back to South East Asia. After his posting in Bangkok in the 1980’s, postings in Africa and former Soviet Union countries followed. No matter which posting he received however, there was a common denominator in his work – the importance of trade and economic work. Now back in the region, he is keen to continue his work in this area saying, “Especially in countries where government and business are closely tied, an embassy can facilitate, introduce and promote business opportunities. An embassy should therefore always be accessible and open. In this regard, I realize I have big shoes to fill, knowing the high appreciated approach and work of my predecessor and the embassy team.”

It’s only been a few weeks but we have already had the honor of interviewing the new Dutch Ambassador, H.E. Harry Molenaar. Seated on one of the orange chairs in his new office and with the regular busy KL morning traffic in the 26

background, the Ambassador was happy to sit with us and share his first impressions, experiences and thoughts about his tenure here in Malaysia. What are your first impressions?

Eager to explore… “Malaysia and The Netherlands have established strong economic ties and share a few important similarities. Both Malaysia’s and the Dutch economies are bigger than their footprint, Malaysia being at the heart of South East Asia while The Netherlands provides a gateway to the European Union. I am eager to further build upon, as well as to explore, possibilities to extend our relationship in all fields, including cooperation in the field of innovation and knowledge institutions. By materializing new opportunities, we hope to contribute to the economic development agenda of Malaysia

NETHERLANDS EMBASSY NEWS

to become a high income nation by the year 2020.” What to expect these coming years…. The Ambassador quickly refers to the good foundation he aims to build upon, representing values of Corporate Social Responsibility, openness and outreach to all our counterparts, be it in a more formal or interactive setting. “CSR especially, has been put high on the Dutch policy agenda. I am therefore pleased with the great success of, among others, the MDBC Sustainability Awards (MSA) as well as the launch of our CSR application.” Apart from the MSA, the new Ambassador stresses the importance of the good cooperation with the MDBC. MDBC and the Embassy complement and reinforce each other’s work. “The good reputation of the MDBC has reached The Hague as well. MDBC was referred to as one of the most active business councils during my preparatory meetings in The Netherlands. I had the honour to meet the Board of MDBC upon arrival, in my first week, and underlined our commitment.” The focus is definitely not only limited to KL. Economic dynamics in Johor and Penang are also put high on the agenda. “In fact, I already planned my first trip to Penang and I am anxious to also meet the MDBC members in Penang and the Northern Region in late September. Johor is to follow shortly.” In addition to our partners within Malaysia, the Ambassador stressed the wish to cooperate with our colleagues at the Dutch embassies in the region, underpinning the growing importance of ASEAN as an economic region. Challenges and opportunities: “Let’s do business” All in all, a wonderful challenge. It’s also a challenge from an organisational perspective. “We’ll have to fulfill our ambitious agenda and maintain our service levels with less manpower.” However, a challenge also creates opportunities in itself. “We have to think out of the box, cooperate and involve our partners.” The Ambassador is confident and again, looking forward to meeting you soon!

DIALOGUE

TalentCorp: RP-T/PR-T update - MDBC Members RP-T / PR-T Update MDBC is proud that we are one of just a few Business Organisations selected by TalentCorp as its partner. Our expat members benefit from this collaboration by receiving a recommended referral for their Residence Pass - Talent (RP-T) or Permanent Residence - Talent (PR-T) application. 3 MDBC members share their experiences.

Lisette Scheers I’ve been in Malaysia for 9 years and have worked with many clients such as Bank Negara, Maybank and the BIG group. I have a daughter (who goes to a local chinese school) and I wanted to stay in Malaysia because as an entrepreneur it’s all possible. You’re at the source of where everything comes from.

Dr. Wim Botermans I came to Malaysia with my family in 2008. Apart from the very pleasant living conditions, our main reason for staying here are the business opportunities available in this country. Malaysia is strategically located in ASEAN and the government continuously strives to provide a business – friendly environment. Compared to Singapore and Hong Kong, there is still ample opportunity for affordable business development in various sectors.

As a growing and new economy, there’s an incredible vibe and energy to explore new and different opportunities. Everyone helps each other out if they can and are rather encouraging - which is not always the case in Europe. You can keep your overheads low if you do your homework rent is affordable, furniture is affordable and living is affordable. You can still have your nasi lemak for RM 1.00 after all. Malaysia as far as I’m concerned is the place to be - great location, great weather, friendly people.

Lion Kraaijbeek I’ve always considered Malaysia home but since I’ve got my PR-T it truly is. I’ve been married for 17 years to a Malaysian and I’ve been hoping to get a permanent residency this entire time. Now I’ve finally got it - thanks to TalentCorp! Having this PR-T feels like freedom. No more worries and uncertainties about work permits and other setbacks that occur to you when you stay in Malaysia under almost any other status. I have applied three times before at the Immigration Department, but I had apparently almost zero chance of obtaining a PR. TalentCorp was my last chance, really. It worked, and it worked fast. It feels like a new lease of life and that’s a great feeling. Malaysia has now finally become a real “home”...

With L.Inc, we contribute to setting the stardard in the country and as a workforce provide a location where you can learn to create and produce at an international level. With Nala, my second company, we try to preserve our beautiful heritage and promote the printing and handicraft industry in Malaysia. Everything is locally produced and made by hand!

With this RP-T visa, I can work and live here without having the stress of reapplying every year. At an emotional level it also makes you feel like investing more and going the extra mile. I was impressed by the professionalism at TalentCorp. They were willing to help and had the patience to answer the phones and call back whenever it was necessary.

The services of TalentCorp came at the right time; under this program, we could get 10 year work and residence passes (RP-T) for the whole family. This is particularly relevant since my wife Tanja (who works as a finance and strategy consultant) did not need to extend her initial work permit. I found the application process quite easy since the whole process is on–line. In our case it took about 3 months to complete and we found the people at TalentCorp very friendly and client oriented, thus providing a seamless and efficient service.

The office in Putrajaya is also efficient - helpful and they serve coffee! Very unexpected and a welcome change to the usual bureaucracy at the other government offices. Everyone speaks English well, is polite and understanding. It was crucial for me to get this RP-T as I am a single mother and whether my daughter could attend a local school depended on it. GREEN BOARD

SIME DARBY & UKM: CHAIR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Team together with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Education and H.E. Vincent Piket (former EU Ambassador to Malaysia).

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) relationship with Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) began in early 2010 with the creation of an endowment Chair, the UKM – YSD Chair for Sustainable Development – Zero Waste Technology for the Palm Oil Industry. In line with the foundation’s activities to promote conservation of the environment and the protection of the ecosystems, this Chair is a testimony of a powerful synergy and partnership between university and industry. The Chair provides vital funding for the development of a critical area of knowledge – to transform palm oil mills into green, carbon neutral factories with zero waste discharge while simultaneously sustaining revenues and ensuring long term productivity and sustainability of the palm oil industry. The expert holding the Chair has been appointed for a two to three-year term with the main function of spearheading researches related to the mission of the Chair. UKM and YSD decided to widen their search for the first Chair holder at the international level to select a wellDr. Pieternel Claassen

respected expert in the field who would be unbiased and independent in carrying out the objectives and mission of the Chair. After considering many candidates worldwide, the current, and first, Chair holder, Dr Pieternel Claassen, a senior scientist at the Wageningen University (UR Food & Biobased Research) in the Netherlands, was selected. Dr Claassen is a renowned scientist and an expert in the field of fermentation and hydrogen production. In addition to her main function of carrying out research related to the mission of the Chair, she is also responsible for soliciting external research funds, assisting and encouraging publications while protecting intellectual properties and fostering R&D collaboration and commercialisation. To achieve its mission and vision, the Chair will integrate the utilisation of biomass produced by palm oil mills, i.e. palm oil mill effluent (POME), empty fruit bunches (EFB) and fibers to produce hydrogen (the ultimate renewable fuel), high value bio-fertiliser and animal feed. Hydrogen produced will power the mill with zero carbon dioxide emission.

include researchers from local research institutes and universities such as the Malaysia Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), University of Nottingham Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and international institutions such as the Wageningen UR in the Netherlands (an institute well known for research in converting biomass to valuable products) and Feng Chia University, Taiwan. This collaboration has created a consortium of Malaysian and global experts working together for a universal cause. UKM provides the intellectual and theoretical inputs in the relevant areas of research, national and international networks of researchers and research funds, fundamental research infrastructure and inflow of students and researchers for capacity building. Sime Darby meanwhile, through YSD and Sime Darby Plantations, provides funding for the Chair and R&D activities, direction of research relevant to the industry, industrial R&D experience and networks, infrastructure and expertise for commercialisation. The 6 research thrust areas for the Chair are: • Hydrogen for power and steam generation • Composting of bio-solids for organic fertiliser • Hydrogen production from biomass • Pre-treatment of biomass for hydrogen production • Algae production to sink carbon dioxide • Water recycle and reuse

Other valuable products, such as mixed alcohol, could also be produced in the process. This is a home grown innovation for the sustainable development of the palm oil industry, which resonates with the vision of the Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC) announced by the Prime Minister of Malaysia in May 2011. The research will be conducted collaboratively, not only among UKM and Sime Darby researchers, but will MDBCONNECTS · 3RD ISSUE 2013
