Delmarva Irish-American Club

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2019 • NOON • 57TH STREET TO 45TH STREET 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 45th Street Village: Irish Festival Live Music By Kevin O’Brennan And The Shoreline Band Fun, Food, Frolic And Spirits In Support Of Local Charities And Scholarships

Welcome

Welcome to the 2019 St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival! The event is sponsored by the Delmarva Irish-American Club and is presented as a family affair for all to enjoy. The DIAC was founded in 1980, and its first membership drive resulted in 75 members. Today, we have close to 300 members. Over the years, the club – a 501(c)(3) social organization – has donated more than $500,000 from the proceeds of the annual parade and festival. These donations go to scholarships for local high school students and to other local charities and organizations. The early parades were very small affairs. The club had few members, and perhaps because of our Irish zeal, we insisted on holding the parade on the true St. Patrick’s Day, regardless of where in the week it fell. So naturally, if it fell on a Tuesday in March in the mid-1980s, participants and attendees were not large in numbers, but they were dedicated. After the second year, Buck Mann and Rick Meehan took over the parade, and it immediately began its steady growth to the very popular event it is today. Buck convinced the club to have the parade on a Saturday and arranged with Rick’s help to secure the 45th Street Village parking lot for an Irish festival. Soon, Irish music and Irish dancers were entertaining thousands of parade viewers who would follow the end of the parade into the parking lot. Beverage and food sales were a logical addition, and the club had found a way to defray parade expenses and even raise money for its charitable endeavors. All these years later, it is still Buck who starts the parade promptly at noon, and it is Rick who organizes the 45th Street Village parking lot and oversees all the entertainment and fund-raising events. In addition, more than 100 volunteers work some aspect of the parade. The event now is one of the highlights of Ocean City’s shoulder season and is the unofficial start of summer for the town. Thousands of people come for the parade, choosing this weekend to visit their vacation homes or book a hotel room for a fun-filled beach weekend. The parade is a sea of green, alive with bagpipes, school bands, civic organizations and, of course, the colorful and creative floats. This year’s parade will be the biggest ever, with record numbers of entries and spectators expected. Seeing parade participants and visitors alike dressed in their finest green can’t help but make you smile. They are certainly making an Ocean City memory that will last a lifetime. Our deepest thanks to the Town of Ocean City, The Dispatch for handling the program from start to finish, our program advertisers, volunteers and benefactors who help make this parade possible. And a special thankyou to the owners and merchants of the 45th Street Shopping Center for their continuing support. We wish everyone the generous blessings of St. Patrick!

Grand Marshals Frances and Michael Patrick Kelly have owned property in Ocean City since 1994. After spending many summer vacations with their families in Ocean City while growing up, it became clear to them that they would one day make it their permanent home. They made that dream a reality when they officially became residents of Ocean City in 2003. Fran and Michael have been living in the Caine Woods neighborhood ever since and have never regretted their decision.

Fran is the daughter of Angela (nee Connelly) and Daniel Schaech. She is one of eight children and grew up in Woodlawn, Md. Fran joined the workforce after graduating high school and began working for C&P Telephone Company. During her career, the phone company underwent several name changes. She retired after almost 29 years of service from the company now known as Verizon. Once retired, she took on a role of caregiver for her aging parents until their passing. Fran is a member of the Delmarva Irish-American Club, where she heads the Membership Committee. In addition, she is an appointed member of the Ethics Commission for the Town of Ocean City. Fran is also an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church where she enjoys volunteering and community fellowship. She is very passionate about raising money to find a cure to end Alzheimer’s.

Michael Patrick Kelly is a product of the Kellys and the Fran and Michael Patrick Kelly Murphys, and is a true, 100-percent Irishman. He is a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, Md. Not much for the classroom, he started his career in the construction field more than 38 years ago. In 2003, Michael started his own company, OC Local Construction Services, and loves working with property owners in Ocean City. He is a member of the Delmarva Irish-American Club and an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church. Michael enjoys spending time with his parents, Francis and Dolores Kelly, 89 years old, who still live in the family home where he grew up as a child in Woodlawn, Md.

Fran and Michael love to travel. However, they don’t have to go far to sit on a beautiful beach; they have one right in their own back yard. They enjoy watching the Baltimore Orioles and Maryland Terps and are Ravens season ticket-holders.

Family is a huge part of their lives. Their daughter, Danielle, lives in Lutherville, Md. Daughter Kimberly, her husband, Mike, and their two daughters live in Perry Hall, Md. Daughter Tara lives in Nottingham, Md. Their grandchildren, Madisyn and Morgan, spend at least four weeks every summer in Ocean City with them. Every day is an adventure, and they love it.

“We love the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It has been a family tradition for many years. We march together and carry the American and Irish flags proudly. We are humbled and honored to be the 2019 grand marshals,” Fran said. 4

Letters Of Thanks From Local Students The following are letters of appreciation from local students who were awarded scholarships from the DIAC.

My name is Jessica Bennett and I am a recipient of the Delmarva Irish-American Club tuition assistance scholarship award for the 2018-2019 academic year. I’m continuing my education at Wor-Wic Community College this fall semester, and I am so grateful to have received this scholarship. I grew up in Milton, Delaware. My family was very troubled, and I grew up seeing, and learning from, the hardships of life. Three years after the divorce of my parents, at the age of 11, I moved to Berlin, Maryland, to live with my father. Now 18, I was recently promoted to a manager at my full-time job at Walmart, and I’ve graduated high school with two semesters of college already completed. I did this through taking AP classes and utilizing the dual enrollment program at Wor-Wic. These past months have led to me moving out of my father’s house, who recently passed, and now, living on my own, I am more grateful for the scholarship than ever. This scholarship will help me in pursuing a degree in general studies, and take the pressure of being able to afford school off my shoulders. I am extremely thankful for the scholarship and the opportunities it has presented to me. Thank you for contributing to my education. – Jessica Bennett Thank you for your scholarship towards

12

my education. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life. – Jenna Shumate I want to take the time to thank you for awarding me the Delmarva Irish-American Club tuition assistance scholarship award. I am very grateful to have received this scholarship, and I hope to make the Delmarva Irish-American Club proud as I pursue my education and golf career at Mount St. Mary’s University in the fall. Thank you again for your generosity. – Matthew Kinsey I am very honored and thankful to learn that I was selected as the recipient of the Delmarva Irish-American Club scholarship award of $1,000. I will be attending Salisbury University in the fall, majoring in secondary education, chemistry. I plan to pursue a career in teaching at the middle or high school level. My ultimate goal is to return to Worcester County Public Schools to teach. Thanks to your generous scholarship, I am one step closer to achieving this goal. This scholarship that you have awarded to me has reduced my financial burden, which allows me to focus on my education. I thank you for your confidence and generosity. – Michael D. Scott

Letters Of Thanks From Local Students I cannot thank you enough for this generous gift. This scholarship will help me accomplish my dream of graduating college. Thank you again! – Nyaire Purnell

Thank you for your generosity and supporting me in my future endeavors. – Caroline Kurtz

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for selecting me to receive your tuition assistance scholarship award. These funds will be contributed to my tuition at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I will be studying turf management. Your support is greatly appreciated as I pursue my academic and professional goals. – Tyler Johnson

Thank you so much for helping me pay for my college education. I am very grateful for your $1,000 donation as well as the contributions made to my fellow classmates. Once again, thank you for your help and generosity. – Justine Graham

My future goal of attaining a career as a chiropractor will begin with foundational courses in several sciences at Salisbury University. The scholarship awarded me by the Delmarva Irish-American Club is the muchneeded financial aid that I need to get started. I wish to thank the members in awarding me this scholarship and assistance.

I will put to good use this tuition assistance with the hope of eventually serving this community as a practicing chiropractor. Thank you very much for your help as I begin this big step toward preparation for the future. With the generosity of the Delmarva Irish-American Club, the financial burden I am facing has eased somewhat. – Zachary Pilarski I would like to thank you so much for your generous scholarship to assist me with college costs this upcoming year. This community has never failed when it came to supporting me and my goals, and I would not be where I am today without you all. No matter where I will be in the world, Ocean City will ALWAYS be my true home. Thank you for all of your support. I appreciate it more than you know! – Maggie Bunting I attended Stephen Decatur High School and received your scholarship during Senior Night. I am truly honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Delmarva Irish-American Club scholarship. I want to thank you for choosing me, as I greatly appreciate it. Your scholarship will help me tremendously in achieving my goals while earning my degree in architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park. Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous gift. – Spencer Carbaugh 13

Parade Flashback To 1985

In a new annual installment in the program, we flashback with a photo to a previous parade in Ocean City. The parade has always been a family affair for the organizers, and the three kids pictured helped their parents over the years in numerous facets of managing the parade. Pictured, from left, in 1985 are Danny Roarty, then 13 years old, and the late Michael Mann and Kellie Meehan, who were both 5 years old at the time. File Photo 17

The Ocean City-Ireland connection: The Irish say ‘a whale of a time,’ when they mean something is, was or will be immensely fun. Ocean City, meanwhile, is an immensely fun place and has an ocean, which is where whales live. Coincidence? Hardly. We therefore recommend having a whale of a time this St. Patrick’s Day Parade weekend. In other words, it’s time to shamrock ‘n’ roll.
