Blood vessels are like tiny garden hoses lined with muscle cells that are smooth in appearance. When the smooth muscle lining relaxes, blood vessel diameter increases. Known as vasodilatation, this increases blood flow. Nitric Oxide (NO) is a key vasodilator produced in the body from the amino acid arginine. The body’s preferred source of arginine for NO production is citrulline. Arginase is an enzyme that breaks down arginine, thereby limiting the production of NO. GLYCO- CORE™ Glyco-Core™ increases the water-carrying capacity and volume of plasma, thereby supporting heavier workloads and enhancing vascularity (more prominent veins) and muscularity (more muscle fullness, definition and hardness) As glycerol draws water into the plasma, creatine draws water into the muscle cell to promote volume-induced anabolism and, over the long term, muscle hypertrophy. Glycerol (1,2,3-propanetriol) has been used to induce hyperhydration in an attempt to offset the deleterious effects of dehydration during long-term aerobic exercise. When glycerol is consumed orally, it is absorbed rapidly, primarily in the small intestine. It is reported to be distributed evenly among all fluid compartments, and promotes hyperhydration by inducing an osmotic gradient. When glycerol is consumed, the plasma glycerol concentration increases in proportion to the dose ingested, thus, without supplemental glycerol ingestion, there will be a decrease in the osmotic gradientresulting in a loss of hyperhydration. A clinical study recently published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research reported excellent findings with a pre/post-workout drink for those training to build a bigger, leaner body. The results were similar to a 2006 study that demonstrated when essential amino acids (EAA) were administered to a group of lifters during four weeks of intense weight training, testosterone levels were enhanced in conjunction with reduced muscle breakdown. The group not receiving EAA had a drop in testosterone levels after four weeks, suggesting EAA are effective for attenuating muscle strength loss during initial high-volume stress, possibly by reducing muscle damage by maintaining an anabolic environment. Reducing cortisol is an effective way to enhance muscle recovery and growth. This most recent study showed nearly 50 percent reduction post–exercise muscle damage with a 6-gram dose of EAA. BCAA’s are both anabolic and
anti-catabolic because of their ability to significantly increase protein synthesis, facilitate the release of hormones as growth hormone (GH), IGF-1 and insulin, and help maintain a favorable testosterone-to-cortisol ratio. ALLIGATOR ABDOMINAL STRETCH
Stretch out your abs before and after your ab exercises. Lie face down on the floor and press up on your elbows or hands and try to look back at the wall behind you and stretch through your abs and lower back. Relax back to the floor and repeat for 10 stretches.
REVERSE ABDOMINAL CRUNCH Lie on your back with your hands placed gently behind your neck and head for support. Cross your feet at the ankles and raise your legs to a 90-degree angle to your body. This is a small movement from your lower abs. Lift your feet toward the ceiling by contracting your lower ab muscle and squeezing. Try not to use motion to get your legs moving upward, focus on the abs to do the lift. Repeat the exercise for 25 reverse crunches.
ABDOMINAL CRUNCH Lie face up on an exercise ball, or on your back on the floor, place your hands gently behind your neck or across your chest for support. Your feet should be flat to the floor with a bend in your knees. Contract your abs, raise your torso up as far as you can, this motion is done by rounding your chest in the ribcage. Exhale, breathe out, on the contraction of the abs and inhale, breathe in, on the release. Repeat the exercise for 25 crunches. OBLIQUE CRUNCH Lie on your side and place one arm in front and the other slightly behind your head with your elbow toward the ceiling. Execute the movement by crunching toward your side, focusing on contracting the side of your abs, moving your elbow in toward your hip. Exhale on the contraction and inhale on the release. Repeat the exercise for 25 crunches, then switch sides and do 25 more.
TRAINING TIP: When you advance in these abdominal exercises, meaning when your ab training gets too easy from building up your ab muscle endurance, then challenge yourself and shoot for three sets of each exercise with a rep range of 30-50 reps per set - Now that will get your abs burning for sure! With direct focus on your abdominal muscles, these exercises will get you closer to that sexy strong midsection you’re longing for.
KILLER CRUNCH
This is one of our favorite exercises. Start by sitting on the edge of a flat bench or chair. Place your hands behind you on the bench for support, let your legs hang, feet together, at a slight downward angle from your body. Try to keep your body at this slight angle for intense ab training. Then contract your abs in an upward crunch position by crunching your knees back up to your chest and remember to exhale, as you contract and inhale on the release. These really burn and are a great way to really attack the upper, middle and lower abdominals - we don’t call these crunches “killer” for nothing. Repeat the exercise for 25 crunches.
HYPEREXTENSIONS
Don’t forget the other side of your abs - your lower back! When done on a Hyperextension machine, start by positioning the pad under your thighs. Place your hands across your chest or behind your head. Start at the top of the movement with your body in a straight line from head to toe. Execute the movement by slowly lowering your upper body to a 90-degree angle by releasing the muscle contraction, squeeze in your lower back, glutes and hamstrings, but don’t rest at the bottom of this movement. Keep a continuous movement of the exercise by raising the upper body back up to the parallel position by contracting your muscles again. Repeat the exercise three times with 10-20 extensions in each set.
