“YOUNG & STRONG at 68” On January 5, 2011 I celebrated my 68th birthday. It is scary how fast the years are flying by.

Coming from a track and field and dance background of my youth, I discovered bodybuilding at age 39 and it changed my life. To the sport of bodybuilding and health and fitness I am truly dedicated. To me it is the most exacting, fascinating, demanding, selfish, disciplined sport.

I did not tell you all these personal things about me to brag, but just to let you know that I am a very busy person. Like most of you, I don’t really have any down time. So what’s my point?

My point is that most people say they do not have the time to stay fit, well neither do I and I haven’t competed in years. However, I still find time to stay in shape. It is important to me as it must be for you in your wanting to succeed.

Now here is the truth no gimmicks just facts.

Staying fit by weight training and doing daily cardiovascular exercises is the anti-aging bullet.

Now combine that with the proper diet and for anti-aging you really have the Silver Bullet!

You have all heard this before. Well stop and believe it. No matter how busy you are you need to take the time to take care of yourself.

Times are changing. From 20 years ago the age of 40 today is totally different. While your average athlete calls it quits long before they reach the top of the hill, after cresting the 40year threshold this group of competitors managed to resist the lure of retirement. Some have even spanned their playing days into their 50’s, 60’s, or in one case, their 70’s. I started competing at age forty in 1983, which at that time in bodybuilding, this was unheard of. Someone told me I was a Master’s competitor. I replied, “Master what?” Age is a state of mind. I still talk about older people and often forget I am talking about myself.

You have more control over your longevity and life expectancy than you may think. Sure, into how long you will live your genetics and family history are factors; but your lifestyle choices may be more important. In fact, what determines how long you will live your genes prob12

ably make up less than 30%. The rest is your lifestyle and your environment. Did you know that scientific studies show that the choices you make now - the things you do this year, can halt typical signs of aging and may even reverse them? By this time next year you could be in better shape, have fewer aches and pains, and have more energy than you did 10 years ago.

But you need to know what those things are;

THE FIVE PRINCIPLES OF FITNESS AND LIVING WELL

Cardiovascular Fitness Anti-aging exercises.

With exercise you can “age proof ” yourself.

For being fit and healthy after age 40 this is an essential part of your program. For every year after that it becomes more and more important.

Walk, run, swim, dance, cycle etc., just move your body for 30 to 35 minutes a day.

Muscular Endurance is the ability to hold a particular position for a sustained period of time, or to repeat a movement many times, measures your muscular endurance fitness level. Example; lift a 5lb weight 20 times.

Muscular Strength is the ability to exert maximum force. It is possible to have greater muscular strength in one area, than in another.

Example: great strength in your arms but a weak lower back. One very important point to remember is that weight training builds lean mass which increases your metabolism and helps you burn body fat. As you age weight training also increases your bone density which is very important.

Flexibility is the ability to move a joint through its full range of motion or the elasticity of the muscle, or basically how limber you are. I am muscle bound. I failed at stretching. I could never find the time to stretch and for that now am paying the price. Can you improve at any age, yes you can. Had I regularly stretched years ago, I would have been better off - hint, hint and hint!!!!

Diet & Nutrition are very important and healthy eating should become a permanent lifestyle change. Anti-aging foods can enhance your health, energy, mental fitness and slow many of the changes that are signs of growing old. Most longevity experts say that free radicals are the main cause of aging. From the damage caused by these free radicals it is believed that anti-oxidants can protect the body.

High ORAC ratings means the food has high anti-oxidant potential and thus rates as a good anti-aging food. Cinnamon, all beans, fruit, artichoke hearts, omega-3 fats in fatty fish like salmon, butternut squash and leafy greens are good for you. All are good choices to make, but most importantly stay away from all processed foods.

What is it that I do specifically to stay in shape? Well here goes… I choose to stay fit.

To keep me focused I make fitness goals. I aim to do cardio every day. If I get it done 5 times a week, I consider it a success. On my scale I also have a stop mark. When my weight reaches that mark, I will not let it go over it. On my eating I immediately cut back and on cardio and on weight training increase my level. I weigh myself every morning. Some may say that this is not necessary, but it works for me. I am very conscious of what I eat and on contents of what I am eating am fastidious about knowing, reading or finding out the nutritional facts. On some foods I can quote you calories, carbohydrates, sugar, fat and sodium content. Know what you are putting into your body. I also take supplements. I believe the majority of adults do not achieve their daily nutritional needs. So much of our food is processed. Many of us miss meals each day because we are so busy. I base my supplement needs on my level of activity ( I still consider myself an athlete), my age, what foods I do eat and what I am missing.

My favorite supplement, which also has antiaging properties, is L-Arginine, followed by Creatine and Glutamine…I could go on and on. However, Infinite Labs® new Infinite Force™ is now my favorite because it includes

From time to time based on medical, physical and other factors I do however revamp and reorganize my supplement regimen such when I train hard for muscle endurance and strength, I add Carno Cre™.

Believe me I am not perfect, I do have my cheat meals. I believe if you are going to cheat you must enjoy yourself and then get over it. Occasionally Eddy’s ice cream calls me at 10 o’clock at night. I don’t want to be rude so I eat it! Not only what I am eating is bad, but at night that is even worse. However, by doing extra cardio I usually punish myself. Trust me it is worth it. Outside of my cheat meals my basic diet consists of white meat chicken, or turkey, and fish. I do not eat beef, pork, lamb or cold cuts. I love veggies, salad, sweet potatoes, brown rice, oatmeal, egg whites and fruit. I drink a lot of green tea, on occasion coffee, and no sodas or juices. These are my basic foods and I work around these food staples.

I do train clients daily and do get in mini workouts.

For my major training I go to the gym three to four times a week. My home gym for the majority of my bodybuilding career has been Bev Francis’ Powerhouse Gym in Syosset, New York. When I can, I still like to train heavy, but not too often. It is really not necessary anymore and is just an ego thing.

MY NORMAL ROUTINE When I train, I usually do straight sets. My normal routine and I vary it often is DAY 1 Legs; quads, hamstrings and calves DAY 2 Back and Chest DAY 3 Biceps and Triceps DAY 4 Shoulders and Abs I USUALLY DO THREE TO FOUR MOVEMENTS PER BODY PART WITH 12-15 REPS.

MY FAVORITE MOVEMENTS BACK one arm dumb bell rows, cable rows and dead lifts CHEST decline barbell press cross over cables QUADS leg press, squat machine and extensions CALVES seated calves raises SHOULDERS cables TRICEPS kick backs, laying down overhead extensions biceps DB curls, close grip preacher curls HAMSTRINGS decline hamstring curls, hyperextensions

MY MAJOR STRENGTH MOVES SQUAT 325 lbs.

LEG PRESS 630 lbs. 4 reps DEAD LIFTS 315 lbs.

ONE ARM DUMBBELLS ROW max. 150 lbs., 3 reps, 100-125 lbs. 10 reps DONKEY CALF RAISES two male heavy weight bodybuilders on my back…those were the days!

I try to do cardio every day and if I achieve 5 days out of 7, I consider it a success. I do cardio in the morning and at night sometimes I do cardio. If I am over my goal weight I do cardio A.M. and P.M. To change your lifestyle you have to make a conscious decision. No one can do that for you. When you are ready to, you will do it, or as with most people, when their doctor finally tells them they have a health problem, when they scramble to change unfortunately, sometimes it is too late.

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT AND AT THE END OF THE DAY IF YOU CONSUME MORE CALORIES THAN YOUR BODY NEEDS (DOESN’T MATTER IF THEY ARE CARBS, PROTEINS OR FAT), YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT, AND IF YOU CONSUME LESS, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.

J: WOW, the woman who made time stop, can you explain this?

L: Well, I have been very fortunate. I inherited good genetics and have maintained a life style that has enhanced my genetic gift. To maintain my athletic fitness and slow down the aging process this has given me the ability. On January 5, 2011 I celebrated my 68th birthday and of participating in bodybuilding September will be my 29th year. However, I still feel young and still have a much younger look than my age, all this without any plastic surgery. However, I did have hip surgery two years ago and because of my excellent condition had a very speedy recovery. For surgery I went into the hospital on a Friday and was in the supermarket shopping the next Thursday.

J: Well said and your photo’s say a lot.

When you started Bodybuilding how old were you?

L: At age 39 I discovered bodybuilding and it changed my life. However, I must say that in my teens I was a Track & Field athlete. I ran the 60,100 and 220 yard dashes and the 440 relay.

In National competition’s I was placed in the top 5. Additionally, I also tried bicycle racing, but knowing the inevitability of it happening at some time decided falling at that speed wasn’t something I would like to do. Just before I discovered body building I started to play tennis.

However, once I picked up the weights tennis was history. Rounding out my background when I was a youngster and in my late teens was classical ballet and in my early twenties modern jazz. I always thought that I was a total athlete and if I wanted to, that there wasn’t any sport I could not do.

J: How has bodybuilding changed your life?

L: To start off, I am divorced, I have one son who since he was 4 years old I raised by myself.

I believe the challenge of raising my son and having a full and demanding management career, while also being a very active community service person, to say the least was extremely hectic. When I found bodybuilding, it just opened a new dimension in my life, which in some ways in my life helped me balance all the demands. It gave me discipline which allowed me to make personal achievements not only in my professional career but, also in bodybuilding. The opportunity to meet so many new and interesting people was the bonus it gave me.

J: Tell us how you got started in Bodybuilding.

L: My brother invited me to go with him to R&J Gym in Brooklyn, New York. It was like throwing a fish into water. I picked up the weights and somehow automatically knew what to do. The next thing I knew competing and bodybuilding became a form of life. To me it is the most exacting, fascinating, demanding, selfish, disciplined sport I know. I loved it at first sight and love it even more now.

J: Having competed over 37 shows Worldwide your Bodybuilding Stats are substantial. In 1983 1st Heavyweight & Overall AFWB (The women’s bodybuilding sanction before it became NPC) your very first show was the Ms. North East Atlantic States.

L: During my career, I was a top five National Competitor and won the Team Universe heavy weight title twice. I also Competed in the Master Worlds 4 times and was placed second twice.

J: From your stats is there one or two that you would like to mention?

L: Winning the first team Universe competition was great and competing in the World’s Championships was fantastic. I was in my fifties at the time.

J: When did you turn Professional?

L: At the IFBB Night of Champions May 2004 I was granted my Pro Bodybuilder Status.

J: Outside of Bodybuilding you also have a very successful life. Tell us about it.

L: I wouldn’t exactly say, “outside of bodybuilding.” Because since I started it has always been a part of my life. However, alongside of bodybuilding in corporate America I maintained a very successful management career.

This included working for five Fortune 500 companies up to the level of Corporate Director while I competed. My career was of the utmost importance to me and bodybuilding was second. However, I was fortunate to be successful in both areas.

I am a certified personal trainer. For two years I owned a private training studio. In the Tribeca section of New York in my home where I train my private clients, I now have a fully equipped personal training studio. I love my current life style. My hobby is now my business. I have fantastic clients. I feel blessed. In addition, on exercise and nutritional programs I give lectures and seminars, and of training techniques at sports conventions and shows I display presentations. Currently I am serving as a National (NPC), Professional (IFBB) and International (IFBB) judge. In addition, I have been a US delegate and judge to the World Universe Championships and for my longevity and dedication to the sport of bodybuilding have been acknowledged. So you can say I have a very fulfilling life inside and outside of bodybuilding.

J: Because you are a big part of my history as well as my success I would like the readers to know of our history. At the Mr. America Gym in the early 1980’s I first met you. Because of your intense training ability I noticed you right away.

J: What sports are you involved in now?

JT: I am currently focused on Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu.

J: How old were you when you started your fascination with sports?

JT: In 2002, when I was 6 years old, I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

J: OK, first I would like to talk about Jiu Jitsu; this sport has a history and a reason behind it. Jiu Jitsu is a martial art combat sport and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century, which was itself developed from a number of schools. It teaches that a smaller and weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger and stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be applied for sport grappling tournaments, mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions or self defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through grades/belts.

JT: To train for this sport you must be dedicated, especially for the use of the proper technique.

When I train I can beat larger opponents due to the use of proper technique. I have numerous successful Jiu Jitsu championships, starting with my first win in 2004, as a beginner in the NAGA (North American Grappling Association) World Championships. I have won 25 first place championships, including the 2005, 2006 and 2008 NAGA World Champion in my weight divisions. At my last competition, I won my weight division in Las Vegas at the 2009 Olympia World Championships (Champion Expert No-Gi Division).

J: How long have you been involved in Martial Arts?

JT: Since the age of 6.

J: There is a new name for kids who are involved with MMA, they call it “Munchkin MMA”, and there has been some concern about its safety.

JT: I think it’s kind of a funny name! I believe that if you have the right trainers and with enough practice, there is very little danger. There are many safety rules that we have to follow; and there is also special equipment we have to wear for safety. I have never had any significant injury doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but I have had them while doing wrestling and playing tennis.

J: For your age you have some major accomplishments, especially with the North American Grappling Association (NAGA). It is America’s largest mixed grappling tournament circuit with over 100,000 competitors worldwide! I’ve learned that NAGA has been the leader of the grappling revolution for many years and has even pushed the sport forward by providing a fun and fair environment for athletes and schools enabling them to engage in competition in order to perfect their skills and to foster positive and social family-oriented behavior. In addition, much of the current boom in MMA awareness can be directly traced to NAGA’s dedication and building a grassroots fan base with a pool of MMA-ready grapplers.

As NAGA goes, they are the sport of grappling.

JT: I think NAGA is best for teens. I am very proud of my record with them; as I said before I am a 4 time NAGA World Champion. I have also won 13 other championships with NAGA and Long Island Pride in both the Gi and No-Gi divisions. I have been lucky enough to grapple above my weight division and to have won championships for both NAGA and Long Island Pride.

J: You also have experience with wrestling let’s talk a little about that. What is the difference between wrestling and Jiu Jitsu?

JT: Wrestling’s emphasis is on throws, take-downs, and ground control with no submissions, whereas most of Jiu Jitsu’s focus is on ground control and submissions but not nearly as much on takedowns.

J: Tell us about your Wrestling Record.

JT: In 2007 my record was 12-0; in 2008 it was 11-1; in 2009 I was 21-1 and in 2010 15-2, including the 2010 National Tournament in Orlando, Florida.

Although I did not win the National Tournament, I did place high enough to be awarded the All-American Wrestler status.

J: Who inspired you to be involved in Martial Arts?

JT: I had originally started to learn self defense, but my grandfather and father really wanted me to pursue it further. My dad is an expert in Martial Arts and Boxing.

J: What are your tips on achieving such success and what is your secret?

JT: You need to work hard, train a lot and follow rules. My secret is to be very fast and strong for my weight, and not to give up.

J: I know that you have trained with 3X Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion Derek Panza; that’s really special; did you know he started training at the age of 8?

JT: No I did not! Derek is really cool, I was a little nervous the first time I met him because he’s so good and I didn’t want to mess up. He told me he had started training young like me, he’s great and he made me feel very comfortable.

J: I interviewed Derek and this is what he had to say about you; “I trained John for several years. He is a hard worker and he competes to win, he’s great! Any child that harnesses his energy into some-

thing positive, especially sports, can only be a good thing. I believe sports has the ability to keep kids away from drugs, alcohol and most vices that plague many young people today, especially as they approach high school and college. Building good healthy habits as a child will easily carry over into adulthood. I am sure John will train throughout his entire life and become a great martial artist.”

JT: That’s so awesome!

J: Tell me about the other trainers/coaches that you have or have had?

JT: For Jiu Jitsu, I am training with Alexander Socca, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion and & World Champion. In the past, I’ve also trained with Deividas Taurosevicuis, former IFL Lightweight Champion. For Wrestling, I am trained by 20 time USA National Champion T.J. Hill and 2 time World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist Vougar Oroudjov.

J: That is impressive, how do you find time to study and train?

JT: My dad keeps me on a strict regimen. I am allowed to train as long as I keep my grades up, so I study hard.

J: Because of your involvement with bodybuilding you have been on the local news and you’ve had coverage in high profile magazines. Does this affect your friends in school?

JT: No, not really. They mostly think it’s cool, if anything, they kid me about it.

J: I believe your grandfather introduced you to bodybuilding, how did that come about?

JT: My grandfather has been lifting weights for almost 50 years. When I was nine years old, he asked me if I wanted to get stronger for my Jiu Jitsu. I was very enthusiastic and I got strong very fast and did many things that most kids my age couldn’t do, like many consecutive pull ups and almost double my body weight on the bench press.

J: In our last training session you showed me that you could do 57 pull ups, I have to ask, what number are you up to now?

JT: Since you train me Joe, you know the most I’ve ever done at one time is 60. Now I have been concentrating more on form and less on reps. I do a full upper body workout and limited leg routine to avoid anything that might affect my growth. I figure that when I am as old as my grandfather is today, I will have been lifting weights for 58 years!

J: As per your grandfather’s request, you started on a supplement to increase your recovery and at the same time gain some muscle.

uccess in any sport requires many attributes. Athletes, professional or amateur, are always looking for ways to improve their performance. SHOULDER PAIN, INJURY, AND SURGERY ARE A GROWING ISSUE WITH TODAY’S ATHLETES. ATHLETES ARE STRONGER AND PUSHING THEMSELVES HARDER THAN YEARS AGO, UNFORTUNATELY PROBLEMS AS MENTIONED CAN ARISE AND DERAIL YOU. The solution to minimize these issues is Pre-Hab! Pre-hab is the addition of specific exercises to enhance your joint mobility, muscle flexibility, and strength, leading to overall performance and preventing injuries.

The most common complaint with athletes is anterior delt pain. It begins minor, and before you know it, pain has limited your workouts, and performance. Upon examination of athletes, the most common objective finding is limited shoulder flexion and reaching behind their back, towards the small of their back. Pain with these movements is reproduced in the front of the shoulder. Assessing strength of the shoulder in various positions reveals pain and weakness. Athletes should have an MRI, if the weakness is significant, and the clinician notices clicking or popping with weakness.

injury, trauma, as well as wound healing for post operative patients.

It has also been used for muscle growth, in weightlifting, bodybuilding, and endurance sports. According to some reports, BCAAs act as a metabolic fuel during exercise, but its best used to negate catabolic effects associated with extreme training.

BETA ALANINE is the rate limiting precursor of carnosine. Supplementation with Beta-Alanine has been shown to increase the concentration of carnosine in muscles, decreasing fatigue in athletes and increasing total muscular work done. Not all supplements are the same, I recommend INFINITE LABS® products because they use the best ingredients available, and all of these ingredients are proven to work effectively.

CORRECT JOINT MOBILITY Athletes lifting incorrectly, leads to improper muscle recruitment.

The biggest cause of shoulder impingement is posterior capsule tightness. The head of the humerus is not able to sit back in the capsule as you move your shoulder in various positions. The rotator cuff tendons become pinched in this space, causing inflammation and possible bone spurs. My first treatment with athletes after evaluating them is Manual Manipulation. This can include deep tissue release techniques, joint mobilizations, nerve manipulation, and spinal assessment. Going through all these techniques is like setting a reset button in your muscles and allows the healing process to occur.

PROPER LIFTING MECHANICS Number one incorrect thing I witness with my athletes is their set up with exercises that involve pressing. Squeezing your shoulder blades back together is so important and rarely performed. Not doing this simple maneuver places all the stress onto your anterior delts and increases the strain on your rotator cuff tendons.

IMPROVE MUSCLE FLEXIBILITY Muscles in pain become tight and weak. For the shoulder, stretching your upper traps, levator scapula, lats, biceps, and chest muscles are important. These key areas will allow proper movement of your shoulder and shoulder blade when lifting.

CHANGING YOUR WORKOUTS Athletes get caught up in the same routines and never change their workouts, reps, and volume. Changing your routine, reps, angles of movement, and volume will allow optimal physique development, muscle balance, and improved muscle flexibility.

Several studies found that independent of hormone influence or substrate influence, decreased cell volume (cell shrinking) leads to cellular catabolism or protein breakdown, while increased cell volume (cell swelling) leads to anabolism or protein synthesis.

AN OVERVIEW The active phase of training is highly catabolic. That means the very act of exercise places tremendous stress on muscles causing them to breakdown.

If the athlete/bodybuilder doesn’t have a strategy for recovery, excessive micro-trauma will be experienced by the muscles being stressed through training and recovery will be significantly delayed along with the sought after results.

It’s important to recognize that the thing (heavy training) you MUST do to build muscle is also the trigger setting in motion events responsible for the exact opposite result you want to accomplish.

You see, intense training results in an enormous metabolic demand, as much as 300% higher than basal requirements where it concerns structural protein mechanics.

The act of exercise causes a negative nitrogen balance as increasing cortisol, adrenalin and glucagon (all catabolic hormones) levels are elevated simultaneously and devastating to muscle tissue.

If certain amino acids aren’t ingested during this very critical high stress environment, protein degradation and muscle wasting will occur and that’s a very bad thing.

Concentrations of L-glutamine (L-glutamine Serum levels) in both muscle and the bloodstream fall markedly during and after strenuous exercise. When muscle releases glutamine back into circulation this event marks the onset of a severely catabolic environment. So you need a strategy.

THE STRATEGY Since it’s understood that exercise induced stress is the very trigger responsible for causing excessive micro-tethering (ripping) of muscle fibers and that L-glutamine’s presence within muscle is critical particularly during periods of high stress it stands to logic that a strategy to minimize micro-trauma to muscles be applied with the goal of accelerating the speed and degree of recovery.

An understanding of the importance of “quantitative” recovery is beyond critical! Do you want to recover a little or a lot? If you only recover a little will you be able to lift as much or run as fast? Again, I can’t emphasize enough that the strategy selected must produce complete and absolute recovery prior to that muscles next scheduled bout of exercise.

Without it, you will continue to work your butt off only to realize inconsequential progress.

Failure to reach goals will not be for lack of drive or hard work but for failure to implement a formidable RECOVERY strategy.

BACK TO THE “EVENT” Again, exercise induced stress during what is known as the intra/phase of training is responsible for accelerating the onset of a catabolic state.

In response to stress (like exercise), skeletal muscle may need to prematurely empty, dump or begin leaking L-glutamine back into circulation.

When this happens you can bet that disaster is imminent. This event can take place during the athlete/bodybuilder’s warm-up set.

THE PROBLEM At the conclusion of the warm up set and in response to the various signals subsequently triggered, cortisol levels begin to spike.

If you didn’t know, cortisol has a well documented and devastating effect on muscle and its release can become proportionate to the degree of exercise induced stress placed on the body.

When L-glutamine serum concentrations are low, skeletal muscle is forced to dump back into circulation its L-glutamine stores causing muscle to become susceptible to the catabolic effects of cortisol, hence, the need for Infinite Labs® Glutamine MTX™.

Above all, you need to understand that building muscle requires stimulating muscle protein synthesis (MPS). MPS simply refers to the process by which your muscle cells build proteins.

From a business standpoint, selling a protein supplement is a catch-22. It’s pretty clear that consumers want to buy them, whether because of the convenience, taste, scientific proof, marketing, or all four. Making a protein supplement isn’t easy, however. The high-quality dairy proteins (namely, whey and casein) that scientists have spent the most time studying in healthy, resistance-exercising subjects aren’t dirt-cheap. This, combined with the fact that the marketplace is saturated with products (i.e. highly competitive), means that profit margins are frequently as thin as your average Facebook friendship. The catch-22 arises from the fact that it is widely believed that a supplement brand will not be taken seriously unless it offers consumers a protein.

If you stimulate MPS enough, your muscles cells will eventually accumulate protein, or as scientists say, they’ll experience a “net protein gain.” This causes them to increase in size. Unless you gain, it’s all in vane. Remember this.

Eating protein stimulates MPS about 4-6 fold more than it reduces MPB. In other words, for healthy people, the MPS, or anabolic, side of the equation is of far greater importance than the MPB, or catabolic, side. Keep this in mind the next time you read an ad for a protein supplement with “anti-catabolic” properties.

But let’s leave the business aspects aside and focus on building muscle. Now that you’ve purchased a jug of your favorite protein supplement, Infinite Pro™, what do you need to know to put it to the greatest possible muscle-building use? The “Top 12” list shown here answers this question. It was largely derived from a paper I received from Stu Phillips, PhD, of McMaster University, one of the world’s leading scientists studying the effects of combining resistance exercise with protein supplementation.

The paper, which Phillips co-authored with Keith Baar, PhD, of the University of California at Davis, reviewed the latest scientific research on the subject. When reading through the list, please note that unless otherwise specified, wherever I’ve used the term “protein,” it refers to proteins isolated from milk, almost always whey, which is the most studied protein to date.

Whether or not the same statements can be made for other commonly eaten proteins (e.g. beef, chicken, tuna), or whole foods in general, remains to be seen.

THE TOP 12 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Resistance exercise (lifting weights) stimulates MPS. If you (a) lift weights and (b) eat protein immediately afterwards (post-workout), MPS rises more than if you do (a) or (b) alone. Combine (a) and (b) repeatedly, and your muscles will gradually become bigger.

Your muscle cells are continually synthesizing and breaking down protein. If muscle protein breakdown (MPB) exceeds MPS, your muscles will eventually shrink.

Leucine belongs to the well-known branchedchain family of amino acids (BCAAs). It is largely responsible for the ability of protein feeding to stimulate MPS. Consisting of 100% whey, Infinite Pro is naturally rich in leucine.

On a gram-for-gram basis, milk protein (whey) stimulates MPS and produces a greater net protein gain than soy.

Recommendations for consuming protein pre-workout in order to promote muscle gains are uncertain or questionable at best.

10 Though MPS appears to be most sensitive to protein consumption immediately after lifting weights, the muscles remain “anabolically sensitive” for up to 24 hours.

Thus, building muscle is not a one-meal deal.

MPS remains elevated and refractory, or resistant, to further stimulation for 4-5 hours after lifting weights and consuming 25 g of whey protein.

Thus, to maximize muscle gains, one should consume an additional dose (20-25 g) of protein every 4-5 hours.

Studies suggest that 20-25 g of protein is enough to maximally stimulate MPS in young men. Phillips and Baar explain that these studies were performed on males weighing about 86 kg (189 lb), “meaning that a 20 g dose would be distributed over a large volume. The dose of protein that maximally stimulates MPS for lighter persons is likely less and it is most likely that it is determined by the circulating blood leucine concentration. It is unclear at this time whether, for example, a 43-kg (95-lb) person would require only 10 g (i.e., half of what an 86-kg person requires) to maximally activate MPS. However, it is safest to assume that this optimal dose of protein is absolute and not relative to body mass and it would therefore be advisable to recommend that athletes consume this dose of protein at each meal to promote and optimize adaptation (i.e., increases in MPS that lead to hypertrophy (increases in muscle size)) and possibly tissue repair.” One serving of Infinite Pro™ contains 25 g of protein, all of it from whey.

I go into every workout with a definite plan and change up my routines often. There are countless ways to perform a workout, and incorporating variety helps keep me interested and motivated.

Music has always been a motivational force in my training, whether I am running or lifting. I prefer fast, upbeat songs...basically anything that gets the blood flowing and inspires great effort. For an intense cardio session I often program my IPOD to alternate between fast and slow songs and then use the beat to help perform interval training.

Q. WHAT IS TESTOSTERONE? A. Testosterone is the most powerful of the more than 30 hormones that the body uses as fuel for life. On average, an adult male body produces about ten times more testosterone than an adult female body, but females are more sensitive to the hormone. Testosterone is a vital hormone to both sexes – it acts as the currency our bodies use to unleash sexual health, improve mental fitness, build lean muscle mass, maintain bone density and increase red blood cell production.

Q. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FREE AND TOTAL TESTOSTERONE? A. Once testosterone is bound it is no longer bioavailable to do all those wonderful things for our brains, blood, muscles and sex lives that we as males so highly value. Normally, about 40% to 60% of testosterone is bound to SHBG, and most of the rest is weakly and reversibly bound to albumin (another protein). Only about 2% is immediately available to the tissues as free testosterone. Unless you have free testosterone, you don’t have any testosterone.

Q. HOW DOES THE BODY PRODUCE TESTOSTERONE? A. Testosterone is produced naturally by the testicles, by the Leydig cells that are small factories busy converting cholesterol into male hormone. These cells are dormant until puberty when they become active and produce massive quantities of the masculizing hormone, we know as testosterone. Unfortunately, with time, production levels of testosterone falls, and this is when men starting feeling their age, or even worse. This is what is known collectively as “andropause”.

Q. IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAXIMIZE TESTOSTERONE PRODUCTION THROUGH SUPPLEMENTATION? A. Yes, supplements can have remarkable effects, but I feel only when in combination of supportive diet, precision supplementation, and targeted exercise. Adding testosterone boosters without blocking estrogen, or lowering SHBG, seems inefficient at best. Of course, sophisticated, customized injectable hormone replacement programs must be given when a person has severe andropause, but supplementation can also polish and cement the positive effects of testosterone at any level of demand.

Q. WHY IS TESTOSTERONE IMPORTANT TO AN ATHLETE? A. Winners have highest testosterone. Multiple studies have shown that victors of all types of sports, and life, have higher testosterone levels than losers. Even “home field advantage” is a result of athletes having higher levels of testosterone when playing in their own town verses when they play away from their hometown. The will to “get back on your feet”, “fearlessness under pressure,” and “increased strength and endurance” are direct benefits from testosterone and that applies to all athletes in any sport.

Q. WHAT IS SEX HORMONE BINDING GLOBULIN (SHBG)?

A. Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a protein produced by the liver, designed as a way for the body to control the intensity of testosterone coursing through our veins. The amount of SHBG in circulation is affected by age and sex, testosterone or estrogen levels, exercise intensity, and can also be affected by certain diseases and conditions such as liver or thyroid disease, and obesity. Keeping SHBG low is a highly worthwhile endeavor, as this makes male hormone more available for important tasks.

Q. CAN TESTOSTERONE CONVERT INTO OTHER HORMONES IN THE BODY? A. Testosterone converts into estrogen naturally in the body. When this conversion is overactive, the result is too little testosterone and too much estrogen. High levels of estrogen trick the brain into thinking that there is enough testosterone available, thereby reducing the natural production of testosterone. Not only does estrogen limit testosterone, it poisons the body creating a bloated, non-motivated, lethargic, asexual state. Who controls estrogen levels, control testosterone – and nobody is immune to estrogen conversion despite a lot of talk to the contrary.

Q. IS ESTROGEN A CONCERN IN MEN, AND IS THERE A SUPPLEMENT THAT CAN BE USED TO REDUCE OR BLOCK IT? A. Excess estrogen can cause adverse effects like weight gain, low libido and sexual dysfunction in men. When estrogen levels go above a certain limit, the body tends to shut down production of testosterone. This in turn results in

problems of the brain, skin, bones and liver. Excess of estrogen for men can cause them to develop female characteristics like breasts, reduced facial hair growth and a higher voice. There are supplements that can reduce estrogen, but it is more important to prevent the build up in the first place. Natural supplements designed to block the aromatase enzyme are helpful, but others that actually flush the system of estrogen are extremely valuable.

Q. HOW DOES THE BODY KNOW WHEN TO PRODUCE MORE TESTOSTERONE? IS THERE A WAY TO PREVENT THE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK TO ALLOW FOR OPTIMAL PRODUCTION? A. The hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis (HPG) is the main production line when it comes to testosterone manufacturing. This assembly line is controlled by testosterone levels in the blood– when low levels are detected by the brain, it sends the message to the testis to make more. This simple pathway may not be the only axis controlling production levels, however, as researchers have detected a separate system called the neurosteroid axis (NSA) that connects the male mind to the sex hormone machinery. While dose and type of testosterone replacement or supplementation has differing amount of suppression of the pituitary, we concentrate on limiting the time span that it is suppressed, and amplifying the signal once stimulation is desired. Products that mimic or bolster the pituitary hormones seem to blunt the symptoms of suppression, but the only real way to boost the pituitary is to relieve it of the pressure.

Q. ARE THERE ANY SEXUAL BENEFITS TO INCREASED TESTOSTERONE LEVELS? A. Sexual benefits are the fastest and most predictable effect of testosterone, not only improved sexual interest, but also sexual ability. While men with Erection Dysfunction (ED) may still suffer some problems on testosterone, it seems to have a profound effect on confidence, rigidity, and endurance.

While some men report that they feel their penis enlarges, this is most like a result of increased desire due to hormone surges. Since testosterone influences the mind in so many positive ways, partners seem more motivated to have relations, and singles report they have so much success in meeting new ones.

Q. WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD A PERSON TAKE BEFORE USING A TESTOSTERONE OPTIMIZATION PRODUCT SUCH AS CYCLO-BOLAN NT? A. MY GIRLFRIEND LAUGHS AT As every woman should my girl (we’ll call her Stacy) lifts weights regularly. She is no pro bodybuilder, nor pro athlete, nor professionally educated coach. Stacy is, however, a well-read fitness enthusiast of sorts. With a great butt from understanding the mechanics of the most under-appreciated, under-utilized, and ill-performed exercise in gym; the Back Squat.

This is the reason (among others) why she laughs every time she passes someone doing bicep curls in the squat rack, and “ROFL” every time she encounters a “smith squatter” or “sissy squatter”.

Stacy’s perspective is not completely spiteful. For attempting the lift otherwise normally supervised by his coaches she also commends the skinny high schooler.

But as for those who should know better, she can’t help but display a slight smirk each time gym science seems to shamefully ignore real science.

Of the lifts in question and to offer my own opinion on whether it is right or not to laugh at the expense of the following exercisers below I weigh the pros and cons.

THE “SMITH SQUATTER”

For trainees the bar [somehow magically] corrects bad form, and creates a safer range of motion.

REAL SCIENCE With the best of intentions way-back-when for people who had lower back injuries and spinal complications the Smith Squat technique was created. The science behind the idea by placing the shoulders closer (horizontally) to the axis of rotation at the hips was that the contraption took torque away from the lower back. With herniated discs and lower back strain the weight being placed directly above this fulcrum makes it safer for the client.

Until you realize that torque has been transferred to the knees this sounds great. Add in terrible skill acquisition that actually degrades any previous learned squatting ability and you have an exercise that makes one wonder, if not laugh at, the reason for its application.

YOUR SQUATS AS FOR UNSAFE:

THE VERDICT – LAUGH AWAY In healthy individuals the Smith Squat on the connective tissue at the knees places unnecessary strain, robs the squatter of significant core work, takes emphasis away from the glutes, and instills bad skill acquisition that once the individual goes back to the highly superior and more effective, Back Squats will later have to be corrected.

THE “SISSY SQUATTER” (Squatting less than 45 degrees)

“Any lower would be unsafe” “By moving more weight I’m overloading”

REAL SCIENCE Some refer to this as the “half squat”, but when it becomes more of a “quarter squat” I have to throw out any idea that this person is utilizing his time in the gym wisely.

As for overloading: by staying high in the squat you maintain mechanical advantage. With similar weight you also move the load over lesser distance = which equals lesser actual work.

If you want to overload, try getting lower, not higher.

For some reason squat depth is becoming controversial, although I have no idea why. Today as to the benefits and safety of squatting to, and slightly below, 90 degrees research was done decades ago and is only being confirmed. I don’t want to call any names.

From articles produced by a lower level certification company I have heard statements stating that these depths are bad for the knees. These articles only hold up if the person already has complications at the knee, or if the technical aspects of the squat are overlooked. But for the healthy individual who performs the squat correctly, there is no proven science that this is dangerous.

[Quick rant - This is all the more reason for personal trainers to pick their credentials wisely. I also saw first-hand the same company demonstrating movements in a video for the medial head of the deltoid. Just so that we’re on the same page…there is no “medial” head of the deltoid. If there were, it would be in your armpit.

To those mentioned and to summarize research you don’t understand stop trying. I recommend remedial anatomy 098 and physics 101.]

THE VERDICT – LAUGH…AND POINT A LITTLE, JUST SO THEY CATCH ON. Squatting below 90 degrees places no additional stress on the connective tissue or articulation of the joint. To be sure the pelvis hasn’t tilted underneath the spine or “rounded out” the most important thing a trainer should look for at the bottom of the squat is actually back position. As for the knees be sure to keep them in line with your toes, and keep your center of gravity behind your toes on the balls of your feet and heels (termed loosely as “the full foot”.) For the technical aspects on how to properly perform the squat, I would refer out to your local qualified practitioner (CSCS or USA-W).

THE “SQUAT RACK CURLER” I’m not even going to waste our time. It is one thing to attempt the virtue of a proper squat and fail, but it is bordering on offensive to waste this sacred space with a movement so undeserving. If you want to isolate your biceps, be sure you’ve trained much more deserving muscle groups first. Then pick up dumbbells, completely supinate your wrist at the peak, and by all means…get the hell out of my girlfriend’s squat rack.

THE VERDICT – THROW A SHAKER AT THIS GUY. We have too few squat racks as it is. Due to their lack of proper program design, we don’t need more sorority boys and self-tanners crowding them up.

Take a look inside your kitchen. Of what kind of foods you see take notice; and even mark them down. In your freezer do you see microwave meals, ice cream and chocolate cake? And in your refrigerator is there soda, ranch dressing and cookie dough? What’s in your cupboards? Do you have fruit snacks, pop-tarts and granola bars? Let’s go in the other direction. In your freezer do you have frozen veggies, individually wrapped chicken breasts and fish? In your refrigerator do you have cottage cheese, apples and oranges, green peppers and Greek yogurt? In your cupboards are there quinoa, almond butter and canned albacore? Which situation best sounds like you? Ok. Now take a look at your body? Are you slightly overweight, always looking for the next trick to finally get you ripped up and in shape, or are you already there, with a schedule of eating down to a “T”? What is in your kitchen says a lot about you. It tells you pretty much, whether you are going to be a lean, ripped anatomy chart, or one of The Biggest Loser’s next contestants.

Let’s just look at this from a very simple point of view.

Not everyone knows how to eat healthy, nutritious food, because not everyone knows what it is. But as a general rule, the cleaner, less processed foods you eat, the more nutritious they’ll be for you. With that being said, now re-assess your kitchen. How much of the products that are in your fridge, have more than a couple ingredients? The more processed a food, the less a “food” it really is. If your body is being filled up with chemical after chemical, man-made materials really, how do you expect to get in shape?

that you really want, of REAL, WHOLE foods and supplementation you need to find a balance. That is really why they are called supplements. If you fill yourself up with supplements, how WHOLE will you really be? Think whole foods first, and then think supplementation.

It’s a lot easier to eat poorly than to eat purely, I’ll give you that. Food preparation is a huge battle for my clients, who are strapped for time usually. But if you think about it, eating purely can be VERY simple and quick. They actually make organic canned chicken breast now. Stores like Trader Joe’s and Fresh and Easy make instant individually wrapped organic brown rice, and every grocery store I’ve ever been to has bell peppers. That’s three items right there which are extremely healthy and can make a great whole food meal in less than 5 minutes. Protein shakes are even easier to make.

Filling your body with cookies, donuts, instant meals, and soda, will get you a whole lot of good feelings in your mouth, but none in your body. After you eat these things just think of how you feel. Both mentally and physically, you become guilty, and let’s face it, lazy. Because now you feel bad about what you ate your whole stress level changes. So you exercise. And now thinking of exercising as punishment for eating poorly, you want to take away the guilt. And now because you associate your workout with punishment, you don’t get a great feeling, which, no one wants. See how this cycle starts? On the other hand, how do you feel when you eat a spinach salad with chicken breast and raspberries, an orange, and some whole wheat toast; pretty good right? And when you eat this way, because you are doing the right things outside of the gym, the gym and workouts seem effortless, painless, and actually enjoyable. These are the two different ends of the spectrum,

So when you realize what you are eating, you will figure out, what you are. You are what you eat.
