THE UNNAMED HOTEL In the Fall 2003 semester, the students from Intermediate English 2 and Intermediate 3 contributed to the telling of the story of the occupants of the Unnamed Hotel in some vaguely northern African locale, circa WWII, by assuming identities of the various characters.
INTRODUCTION Story by Committee When I entered the bazaar, a couple of merchants were busily bargaining and trying to sell their goods to na誰ve tourists who were looking for souvenirs. Some young boys were leading their donkeys through the narrow streets on their way home. A couple I had met at the hotel, both dressed more appropriately for a vacation on the Hawaiian islands rather than this place, were arguing over the price of gold trinkets. I walked over to a man who was selling fruit and bought a banana. While I ate my breakfast and observed the activities and listened to the sounds of the crowded marketplace, I ruminated over the consequences I would soon face as a result of my article being published in the morning edition of The Gazette. I needed to see Raoul. I needed to speak to him before Dana called Beto. And there was the matter of the newlyweds, Sarah and Ivan, their problem and what they had discovered. If Captain Balthazar interrogated them, the wrong answer could land all of us in deep trouble.
CHARACTERS Captain Balthazar Tall and stocky. Probably in his 40's. No visible wrinkles on his face, but has a scar on his left cheek. Large brown eyes that can almost hypnotize a person when he speaks to them. Black hair which he keeps short. He uses pomade. He's quick-witted and remembers everything he hears. He has an annoying habit of tapping a pencil on a hard surface when interviewing people. This can be maddening and make a person forget what he has already said, even though the captain remembers all. He wears a khaki colored uniform, which is always clean. People have said he must have dozens of them because they never show any sweat stains nor signs of wear. He has been staying in Room 110 at the Unnamed Hotel for a long time. Whether he's on an assignment or a mission of vengeance is unknown.
Beto Medium height and sinewy rather than muscular. Probably in his mid-30's. His face is weathered but still handsome in a youthful way. He has the appearance of a young man who has experienced much that might produce stress in a person less sure of himself. His blue eyes are large and sparkle in a pleasant way but they seem to belie something sinister. He has a full head of wavy light brown hair with just a touch of gray at the temples. He is adventurous and unpredictable. Some people think Beto comes from a wealthy family but it's hard to tell for certain. People say he met Dana in her travels and has followed her to the Unnamed Hotel to try to convince her to marry him. She almost always wears pastel colored dresses whether formal or informal. Nobody can recall having seen her in pants or other ensembles. He's currently in Room 109 right next door to Captain Balthazar.
Dana Medium height and shapely, though not voluptuous. Probably in her early 30's. Her face has a creamy complexion, though there are some small lines beginning to appear around her eyes. The crow's feet do not detract from the beauty of those eyes, however. When she looks at you and smiles, you feel as if you have won some kind of prize. If she does not smile, you had better be wary. She usually displays her long naturally dark brown hair and wears it pulled back from her face. But she has been seen as a blond and a redhead, with her hair curled and short. She is calculating and unpredictable, but can also be very warm and friendly if she likes you. People say Dana is traveling to escape from being captured for some horrible crime, but that may be just a rumor. She almost always wears pastel colored dresses whether formal or informal. Nobody can recall having seen her in pants or other ensembles. She's currently in Room 103 at the Unnamed Hotel. She is often in Room 109 with her friend Beto.
Raoul Tall and thin. Probably in his 50's. His face is lined with age. He has seen and done a lot of things in his lifetime. Smallish green eyes that appear to be squinting all the time as if he is searching for something. Brown short hair with a widow's peak. He's intelligent and logical. If you need anything, such as manufactured identification papers, information or resolution of a problem, he's the man to see. He wears casual clothes that sometimes look as if he has slept in them. He's staying in Room 105 at the Unnamed Hotel, but you can almost never find him there. He's always out somewhere taking care of business.
THE STORY Eduardo Farrera Montoya I hate to go to the bazaar because the merchants rob me when I buy a souvenir. The couple should dress more appropriately for the place. The bazaar is a place where people go to buy souvenirs. After publishing my article, I ruminated over the consequences. In contrast to Captain Balthazar, we could be in deep trouble. It's impolite to be interrogated by Captain Balthazar. I thought about the article. Before that, I had never been worried. I wish that I had never written the article. How could I forget that thinking about the consequences is an important thing for a person who is writing an article? Something that really bothers me is the way I wrote the article.
Liliana C. Mendoza GonzĂĄlez I'm interested in talking with Raoul because I need to talk with Dana. The only way to avoid the problem is by talking to Raoul. I can't find Raoul. However, I need to speak with him before Dana calls Beto. Before Captain Balthazar talks to Sarah and Ivan, I need to talk with Raoul. Almost no one wants to talk with Captain Balthazar. Dana told Beto all about the problem with Captain Balthazar. The moment Raoul arrived, Captain Balthazar was interrogating us. I wish Dana wouldn't call Beto after I speak with Raoul. I couldn't talk with Raoul, which is why all of us are in trouble.
Edgar SinuhĂŠ Esquinca They avoid talking with strange people so they didn't talk with the captain. Reasons shouldn't be given by Dana if she wants to be safe. However, Raoul needs to come at 3:00 pm and I'll talk with him. As soon as I left the bazaar, I went to look for Raoul but he had gone. The majority of the people in the bazaar were worried about high prices. Hearing the stories about Dana, I felt uncomfortable. The moment Beto arrived, Dana was entering the hotel. I wish I hadn't been there. Talking is an important thing for people staying angry, so they need to solve their problem. Something that really bothers me is that they didn't agree about the matter.
Ana Carolina Aranda The man enjoys spending his money at the bazaar. I want to see Raoul so that Beto will not know the truth. Dana is a person in whom I can trust. Once Captain Balthazar knew the truth, Sarah and Ivan went to jail. Most people that lie, like Sarah and Ivan, go to jail. Captain Balthazar said that they had lied to him. Captain Balthazar was arguing about the situation when the police arrived. It is sad that Sarah and Ivan lied to Captain Balthazar because he is a good person. People need to pay if they have broken the rules, which is why bad people like Sarah and Ivan paid for their crime in jail. One thing that annoys me is how an ex-convict from Alcatraz like Captain Balthazar is living in that little town.
Lorena Hern谩ndez Flores A problem with speaking to Captain Balthazar is that we may have a bigger problem. The only way to avoid the problem is by talking to Raoul. I can't find Raoul. However, I need to speak with him. Before Captain Balthazar talks with Sarah and Ivan, I need to talk with Raoul. Almost no one wants to talk about the discovery. Dana told Beto all about the problem with Captain Balthazar. The moment I arrived, Captain Balthazar was interrogating them. I wish Sarah and Ivan hadn't discovered that thing. I couldn't talk with Raoul, which is why all of us are in trouble.
Carlos Ram贸n Berm煤dez L贸pez Merchants dislike bargaining over their products with tourists. Captain Balthazar should understand them because they are foreign tourists and they don't know the rules. A good way to talk with Raoul before Dana calls Beto is to use the phone. In the bazaar where merchants were busily bargaining and trying to sell their goods is an exciting little old wooden house in the big city. Tourists buy souvenirs because handicrafts are wonderful. Most merchants use a lot of techniques to sell their products. Interrogating people about the problems of a newlywed couple is impolite. I published my article in the morning edition of The Gazatte. Later, I saw the consequences of my opinion in the streets. I hope Captain Balthazar hasn't interrogated the couple. The couple, who dressed more appropriately for a vacation on the Hawaiian islands, stayed all day in the hotel.
Candy del Valle He enjoys buying things at the bazaar. He ought to talk to Raoul before Dana calls Beto. The tourists are people who dress more appropriately for a vacation on the Hawaiian islands rather than this place. As soon as he entered the bazaar, a couple of merchants were busily bargaining and trying to sell their goods. The majority of the tourists buy a lot of things. It's boring to sell things in the bazaar. When he was walking, a man was selling bananas. I'm happy (that) I lived in a tourist place. Anyone wanting to travel has to save money. Something that really upsets Captain Balthazar is people who tell lies.
Ana Itza Carillo Carvajal A problem with walking through a crowded marketplace is that you can't see all the products that the merchants offer. Sarah and Ivan should resolve their problems by themselves. I needed to see Raoul because he is a big old friend of mine and I have confidence in him. After speaking with Raoul, I found the solution to the problem. Most merchants are worried trying to sell their products. It's customary to find tourists looking for souvenirs. I was walking through the marketplace when I saw an old friend. I'm glad that I met some people from another culture. Anyone wanting to sell their products has to bargain hard. Something that really bothers me are the crowded marketplaces.

Despite the narrowness of the streets, the boys were leading their donkeys through them. Viridiana Moreno Zúñiga A problem with having newlyweds near you is that you can be in big trouble. The best way to get out alive is by gaining his confidence. Captain Balthazar is a big old bad person with a dangerous crew. As soon as the article is published, people will know about the history of this place. While Sarah and Ivan were talking with the captain, I was praying that that everything would turn out well. It's impolite to listen behind the door, but I have to know what they are talking about. The next day, they told me everything that they talked with him about in the afternoon. The police discovered everything. I'm glad that everybody survived this experience. I hope that bazaar improves and sells things of better quality. Determination is an important quality for a person like me who is working as a journalist.
Farina Flores As soon as Sarah and Ivan went to the ship where the captain was, she couldn't resist a nervous feeling. So while Ivan was asleep, she called the captain. She didn't know how to tell him what they had discovered. Until she had decided - the moment (that) she had told him everything, the captain felt so good because an advantage of knowing about it was they could discover the entire history. The next day, Sarah told Ivan everything and he said he enjoyed the adventure because they met new people, and he said he couldn't stand having said nothing the night before and the next time. She should have said these things before she did anything. The captain told them that this city was the most important of its kind. On the other hand, Sarah and Ivan were happy for the rest of their lives.
Lety Sánchez González Captain Balthazar is interested in interrogating them. I ought to see Raoul. The only way to get the wrong answer is by interrogating them. He published his article. The next day, he was going to suffer consequences. He was thankful that he saw Raoul. To observe and listen are important things for a person who is working on an article. Something that really bothers me is having problems.
Luis Daniel Torres Fregoso As soon as the captain called them they got nervous because they had thought it was going to be a hard interrogation. I wish I had not spent nearly all my money in the bazaar but I wanted to give presents to my family and I am thankful that I bought some souvenirs. After I finish buying in the bazaar, I will go visit other places in Hawaii just to know its culture. Beto told me that Hawaii has a big beach, which is why the government has extended the tourism service. Well, I ought to spend more time getting to know Hawaiian culture and its beaches but I ought to have already gotten my tickets and passport. So I'm glad I checked my passport with Immigration before now.

FabiĂĄn PĂŠrez I dislike finding my friends with problems and I love helping them and other people, so I need to call them. After that, I will tell them they need to walk with care. A problem with calling the captain is that they are very clever. The captain is very hard with his questions and it's not easy to deceive him. They ought to have gone with me for the tickets and they could have entered the immigration office and checked their passports. The only way to have a passport is to live in another country where you don't have any problems and you can buy different things. I plan to buy different things and return with one bag, if not more, to give presents to my family. This bazaar is where different people from around the world can buy various Hawaiian things because it is the only one in the world. After I finish buying in the bazaar, I will go visit a Hawaiian place and get to know its culture. Before I do that, however, I need to go to the bank to check my money. Beto told me that Hawaii has a big beach I need to get to know. Before that, Beto told me that the moment he arrived by plane in Hawaii it was boring. I watched and it was true Well, I ought to visit more places and have more adventure in my life.
Christian Cigarroa As soon as they went to the ship, where the captain was, they had no alternative but to tell the captain everything about their secret. An advantage of telling the captain everything was that he told them they would always have his trust. They can't stand the captain's attitude but it was the first time (that) they saw him. Sarah and Ivan shouldn't stay here right now but they need to resolve their problem. On the other hand, Dana and Beto called about the problem. They know everything and the problem is very dangerous. Something that both Sarah and Ivan know is that every moment the problem grows bigger. While a lot of people knew about the problem, Sarah was desperate; the fact that so many people knew embarrassed her. Dana was going to speak with Sarah about the problem, but she didn't call Dana. The next day, Sarah had to explain the problem to everybody. She wished (that) nothing had happened, but the problem was ever present.
Norma Cecilia Farrera Cunjamá An advantage of talking with Raoul is that he meets a lot of people that could help us with Sarah and Ivan's problem because it is very serious. I ought to call Dana and ask her not to talk with anybody about the problem. Before she calls Beto, we should try to do Sarah and Ivan's article tomorrow because we are their friends. If Sarah and Ivan tell Captain Balthazar, the director of the newspaper, that their article shouldn't be published tomorrow because they have discovered that their information is false, because people lied to them, they could have a bad problem. A good way to resolve this is by searching for other good news for tomorrow. However, we should start with the news. While we are working on this, Dana shouldn't call Beto, who is the director of Section B of the newspaper.
Ana Laura Galindo Tourists enjoy buying souvenirs at the bazaar. The only way to learn about the town is by talking with native people. I think that place is a picturesque small old town. While he is eating his breakfast, he talks about Mexican food. The majority of the tourists bought souvenirs. Dana told Raoul not to say anything about Beto's party. As soon as Sarah and Ivan talked with Captain Balthazar, Beto asked to speak to him. Captain Balthazar is glad that he interrogated Sarah and Ivan. Anyone who wants to travel has to learn different languages. Something that really upsets Captain Balthazar is people who tell lies.
Irene Jiménez González In that moment, I hated to think of that situation and I only enjoyed eating my breakfast and seeing what was happening around me in the bazaar. After a while, I thought that a disadvantage of having good articles is that you always come upon problems. Before I finished eating, I walked a while and found an old friend, who is very nice, and told him about my situation. He told me that a good way to solve my problem was by talking with Raoul about it. Then he laughed and told me that the bazaar was a place where people go to buy things. He told me we should go to that bazaar so I could find some distraction. We would go later. However, I didn't believe that going to the bazaar would be a great distraction. As soon as I told him that, he disappeared and left me alone.
Carla L贸pez Mohedano I enjoy going to the bazaar because there are a lot of souvenirs. The couple should buy new clothes because the ones they have are more appropriate for wearing in Hawaii. Captain Balthazar is a person who is very complicated. Until the article is published, people don't know what to think. Most of the people in the bazaar are really busy. It's boring to hear Captain Balthazar talking about himself. He is so stupid! A large crowd of tourists went to the bazaar and bought the goods of the merchants. I wish I had seen Raoul before Dana called Beto. Now Raoul is mad at me because I told Dana first that I'm a cheerleader. Anyone who wants to speak with Captain Balthazar has to be a very important person. Something that really bothers me is the way Dana tells everything I tell her to everybody.
David A. G贸mez Balthazar enjoys interrogating people. A good way to answer correctly is to know about the theme. Balthazar, who is a great man, was interrogating Sarah and Ivan. Before Balthazar asked the first question, Sarah was nervous. The majority of the questions were answered correctly. It's impolite to ask about themes that you don't know. As soon as I arrived in the place, Balthazar asked me one question. I wish I had answered that last question correctly. Sarah said that anyone (who is) interrogating needs to know the theme. One thing that annoyed me was when Sarah answered correctly.
Graciela Garc铆a Renter铆a Sarah and Ivan like going to the bazaar. Sarah and Ivan should discover stuff with more frequency. The man who was selling fruit was very nice. As soon as Captain Balthazar interrogated them, they started running. While I was talking to Dana, Beto arrived. It's important to recognize that Captain Balthazar is a big man. Until I finished talking to Dana, I hadn't noticed that Beto had been listening to everything. I wish Captain Balthazar hadn't interrogated them. Anyone needing to see Raoul, wants to talk to him about Beto. Something that really bothers me is that they answered Captain Balthazar's interrogation incorrectly.

Maria BermĂşdez Sayaao I hate waiting for authorization. That's why I changed the article. I shouldn't have done it, but I thought that I really needed to change it. Everybody knew what the last article was about in order to give the right answers at the interrogation. Sarah and Ivan will be interrogated by Captain Balthazar. The questions should be based on the article and the answers will be very important, which will conclude the justice of the article. That's why I need to see or talk with Raoul. So, as soon as I had an opportunity to make phone calls, I called him. He would talk with them; they have a very good relationship - except when they are at work. Giving wrong answers at the interrogation would be embarrassing and it would cause problems. The moment I talked with Raoul, he sounded a little bit upset. I should accept that all of it was my fault and I wish I hadn't done that. Anyone who wants to keep their job has to have respect for what others do. Something that really bothers me is to be wrong at work, but this time I admit I did a wrong thing. Everything turns out well. Sarah and Ivan gave good answers and finally, thanks to me, they like the new article better.
Daniela Moguel Raoul enjoys buying new things. Dana should call Beto. Sarah, who used to be a blond, is now a redhead. As soon as Beto knows the latest news, Sarah will be prepared for that. The majority of the people in the hotel were buying gold trinkets. Dana asked Beto if he knew about the news. The moment Raoul started to talk, Dana told him to be quiet. I wish I had seen Raoul. A person wanting to be successful at buying has to work hard. Something that really bothers me is people who don't work.
Francisco Rivera Valls Captain Balthazar enjoys watching Sarah and Ivan. A problem with giving the wrong answer is that it could land all of them in trouble. Sarah and Ivan should have given the correct answer. A good way to give the correct answer is by thinking about it for a while. Captain Balthazar, who is famous for killing people, is talking with Sarah. Sarah and Ivan are thinking. However, they don't have too much time. As soon as Sarah gave the answer, Captain Balthazar was very surprised. Ivan was very afraid because he didn't know if that was the correct answer. While Captain Balthazar was surprised, Sarah and Ivan were very happy. Almost no one gave the correct answer but Sarah did. Sarah said that it was boring to hear the stories about Captain Balthazar. Ivan was very scared when Captain Balthazar questioned him. Before that, he had never been so scared. Ivan should have paid more attention to Captain Balthazar. Sarah is glad that she learned the new lesson. Sarah said that anyone wanting to discover something has to go to beautiful places. Many people are afraid of discovering new places.

The Hawaiian islands, which are located in the Pacific Ocean, are appropriate for travel. While I ate my dinner, I ruminated over the consequences of my article. While I'm talking with Dana, I'm looking for another person. Sarah said that it was boring to hear the stories. Paco was very scared when the captain was questioning him. Before that, he had never been so scared. Raoul should have paid more attention to Captain Balthazar. Sarah said that anyone who wants to discover something interesting never comes to a place like Hawaii.

The Hawaiian islands, which are famous for their hotels, are my favorite place for vacations. While I'm speaking with Dana, I'm looking for Raoul. It is boring to speak with Dana. Something that really bothered me was when Captain Balthazar interrogated them.
Monica Isabel Zepeda Trujillo Sarah and Ivan enjoy entering the bazaar. Dana shouldn't give my phone to Beto. Hawaii is a place where people go to vacation. As soon as Raoul entered the bazaar, a couple of merchants were selling their souvenirs. While many people would rather go for a vacation on the Hawaiian islands, I go to New York. It's not polite to speak a foreign language in front of merchants. I called my friend before dinner. Until that time, I usually chatted after dinner. I'm really happy that I took this class. I've improved my English. A person who wants to have a good job should study before that. I'd really like to know why some people are always getting into fights. By that time, I will have been living on the Hawaiian islands for several years.
Alejandro Burguete Escobar After thinking about all of this, I wish that I had never written the article about Captain Balthazar. Generally, I avoid falling into problems, but now I can't do anymore and I have to solve all this. Sarah and Ivan were in danger. I had to speak with Raoul and Dana to save Sarah and Ivan. A good way to contact them is to go in person to them because I can't trust the telephone. It could be tapped. While I was walking through the city to go to Raoul's house, I checked if anyone was following me. Afterwards, when I arrived at his house, we talked about the problem and decided to go see Dana. When we talked with Dana, she told us her secret - she was a secret agent trying to capture Captain Balthazar - and she gave us advice. "Anyone trying to confront Captain Balthazar is in real danger." After thinking about the problem we went to the port. It was a little old port that doesn't appear to be secure. When we saw Captain Balthazar in an old ship, we saw the perfect opportunity to capture him. In contrast to the previous situation, we were lucky because he was alone. We assaulted the ship and after a short percussion around the ship, we captured Captain Balthazar. Dana gave us thanks because by having written the article she could capture Captain Balthazar, the famous multi-killer of Arabic nations. Finally, all of us (Dana, Beto, Raoul, Sarah and Ivan) went to eat and to celebrate our friendship because of which we are alive now.
Paolina Macias Rosado Captain Balthazar hated waiting to interrogate them, so he did it quickly. A disadvantage of waiting for those people was that he couldn't do anything before that. I had planned to talk to Raoul before Dana called Beto, so that I could call him. I live in a very big city where people go to the marketplace for nothing. That's why there's always a crowd. There are few couples like that in this town. However, there are a lot of common couples. As soon as the couple wake up in the morning, they get dressed very appropriately for nothing. They sometimes lie awake at night, even if they're very tired. The people on Hawaii don't dress appropriately except on special occasions. The majority of people in Hawaii keep up with current events. If people cared more about how they looked, the city would be more elegant. It's boring to hear the stories of Captain Balthazar because they make no sense. He said that they were planning to leave the town, and a woman asked him if the date for leaving was on Christmas. He answered, "No!" Before that, the captain had never gone anywhere. The moment he arrived in town for the first time, his boss asked him if he had a good time on the trip. He said no, because there had been a storm. The storm had flattened the entire downtown area. A large crowd was cheering wildly as the pilot landed her plane safely. Captain Balthazar shouldn't listen to the opinions of the townspeople. He's happy that he never lied to anyone about his life, but it's sad that most of the people in the country don't believe him. When they were sure about the treasure, the captain appeared. He said, "Give me the treasure right now!" Ivan said, "No!" Then they were fighting until the captain killed Ivan with a rock. In that moment, Sarah took a bat and hit the captain in the head. He fell unconscious. Sarah got Ivan in the boat together with the treasure. She left the island and went to the police. Now, ten years later, Sarah has millions of dollars. She lives in a big house, but she still feels sad because her boyfriend is dead.
