Multiple playgrounds around the site

Connecting all playgrounds through the site

From its history as a capital of the old Prussian empire to its history of turmoil and separation in the 20th century and its subsequent re-emergence as the forefront of the liberal democratic world, Berlin has the full spectrum of diversified history. As its re-emergence, it also attracted people from different cultures in this city. Which has over the years created a distinct Barlin culture of multi-diversity. As we have seen from countless other examples from all around the world that with the increase of multi-diversity comes racial tension, xenophobia, and extremism. Art and the artist represent the contemporary situation of a society and its ideals. And as Berlinische Galarie collects, stores, and exhibits all the art from Berlin it also has a unique responsibility to promote this idea of liberal cohabitation.

How can we promote this idea of equality, tolerance, and liberal cohabitation? We can teach our children from a very early age about diversity. An opportunity to bring children from the community to the museum to teach about the history and art, we can obviously do that in a regular exhibition space. But it would be a much more integrated approach would be the museum itself could be a playground for the children when they can come and play and also learn about history and art along the way. Our site for Berlinische Galarie obviously uniquely located within a community. There are multiple playgrounds all around the site. We can link and combine these playgrounds through the site and create more integration. And then we can arrange the functions of the museum around this playground.

Creating a common playground centered in the site

Placing the museum functions around the playground

Ramallah in 2070. Palestine has become an island country. Fractured in different parts. Encircled by Israeli protective walls and segregated and disconnected by Israeli roads and settlements. In 2033, an uprising in eastern Jerusalem which resonated throughout the whole Palestinian region resulted in a crushing defeat of Palestinians and confiscation of the whole west bank except 8 Palestinian cities - Ramallah, Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, Jericho, Bethlehem, and Hebron. The Palestine Authority as a decoy of Israeli control was still able to hold on to power till 2038, but again a revolution threw that authority out of power. People formed a new democratic government that declared independence and formed the state “Democratic Republic of Palestine”. DRP built walls around all-around their cities to stop Israeli control over their remaining land. The 8 walled cities are only connected by a few barbed wired roads that are regulated by the Israeli military and only open for a few hours a day. A country, a collection of walled cities, functionally disconnected from each other and the rest of the world was internationally recognized in 2040. As a result of the Israeli scheme of oppression against the Palestinians seeking independence, the international community backed up from any kind of support or economic activity with the new Palestine State. Being cut-off from the outside resources, Ramallahans realized if they had to survive with their limited resources they have to grow their own food to ensure food security. In 2048, a farming revolution began. Several small scale farms started in Wadi areas. In 2053, A collaboration between farmers and politicians happened which resulted in the formation of the “People’s Assembly”. This assembly was consist of representatives from farmers, doctors, teachers, technicians, politicians, and other professional communities and worked in conjunction with the justice, administration and law department of the government. Thus an idea of “Democratic Socialism” emerged where people elect representatives from their communities and govern themselves. Eventually, Ramallah’s wadis were declared as a special farming zone by the People’s Assembly. A buffer zone was created between housing areas and farmlands to stop encroachment. The whole economy transformed into a farming-based economy. To maximize the growth of the economy, a reinvestment policy was taken where a certain percentage of the revenue from farming has to be reinvested in water and energy infrastructure development. Which directly led to further development and increased productivity of the farmlands.
