In 2015 the government took a decision of transforming Tejgaon Industrial Area into a “business-cum-residential district” by the year 2050. In the year 2050, what would be the identity of this city? As a capital of a country that has ranked “the second fastest growing major economy” in 2016 by the IMF, can we dream that our city can be the next economic powerhouse of South-East Asia? As a response to that decision this project tries to explore the idea of how an existing industrial area can morph into a business district while serving as a sustainable urban development example for the growing megacity.

A high-rise building that is not only a functioning commercial hub but also an icon of sustainability through the use of supplementary space utilization, innovative energy consumption, rain water harvesting and community engagement. Such a high-rise inspires a social change for sustainable design approach in every aspect of the society. The site is by the side of Hatirjheel Lake which is one of the newly developed and highly sought after areas of Dhaka with a great view of the city all around. The design approach was to engage open terraces with the building mass so that they create the opportunity for the user to get in touch with nature. Being detached from the ground plane causes fatigue in work environment in high-rise buildings. The opportunity of getting in touch with the nature while taking a break increases productivity. The terraces also create shaded spaces which accumulate cool air which can be diverted into the building’s natural cooling system. Double glazed glass facades are devised with wind modifier which work as the inlet for the natural cooling system. These wind modifiers also double as wind turbine generating electricity. Gutters in the terraces work as a rain water harvesting system from which water is later used for irrigation and toilet flashes. Overall sustainable solutions are adapted as much as possible throughout every stage of design.

A center for all students to come together- to play, create and grow in unison. The site is located in the middle of three student dormitories, historically used as a dining and gathering space for the entire residential area of the university. The program was to rethink the usage of the site in keeping with the functionalities currently offered by the canteens and student union offices of the area. The design goal was to celebrate the connectivity of students living in the dormitories without disturbing the existing pedestrian layout among buildings, and incorporating other functions around it. Consequently, the amphitheater in the designed site lies at the central zone, which was obtained by tracing existing pathways. Other functions like the multipurpose hall and the exhibition space hold the southern block facing the grandeur of the central court. The café, souvenir shops and other utility functions are zoned in the north-west front side to ensure ease of access. The student union building and badminton courts are arranged in pockets created by surrounding buildings to supplement the central space. In addition to being the eye of all connection, this central space is devised to house various cultural and national festivals like the Pohela Boishakh (bengali new year), National Victory Day and celebratory concerts arranged by the students. Overall, the space is designed to inspire social connectivity among students which in turn will create a convivial atmosphere for the nation’s youth to enjoy. 22

A library should be such a place which will invite people towards the aspiration for knowledge. A university library which is open to its community could be the hub of learning, the essence of knowledge for the whole locality. So the concept for this project is to recognize this library to people easily. The formal expression is a mimic of a “pile of books”. A central glass core will hold the stack of books which will give the first impression of entering a place full of books. Reading spaces and other functions will be arranged around the stack.
