The Section 179 Roller Coaster Ride is Over, For Now…. By Mark Robinson, MDNA Executive Vice President On December 18, 2015, President Obama signed the $1.8 trillion Spending and Tax Bill into law, which includes nearly $700 billion in tax breaks. Among the highlights of this legislation is the extension of more than 50 expiring tax cuts, with more than 20 becoming permanent. The highest profile of these being the permanent increase to the maximum amount a small business can expense under IRS Section 179 from $25,000 to $500,000. This would be reduced if the cost of Section 179 property placed in service exceeds $2 million.
Example Savings*
Used Machinery Cost: $500,000 New Potential Tax Savings: $175,000 Final Equipment Cost: $325,000 Cash Savings on Equipment Purchase: $175,000 *Assuming a 35% tax qualifying purchase This is great news for your customers who are purchasing used machinery, as Section 179 limits will allow them to deduct the full purchase amount of up to $500,000.
The most common question I am asked is, “Are you sure used machinery qualifies for Section 179?” The answer is that almost any type of business equipment qualifies for Section179 expensing, including used machinery, if it is purchased and placed into service within the year it is expensed. Years ago when Section 179 began its roller coaster ride, the MDNA received advice from tax professionals who confirmed that to qualify for this tax code provision, the used machinery must be new to the purchaser. There is no stipulation that machinery be “brand new.” And since the year 2000 the amount that can be expensed has waffled between a low of $25,000 and a high of $500,000 with the qualifying language never changing. MDNA NEWS | PAGE 4
By making this increased expensing limit permanent, it takes away the guess work that end-users had to do every year when considering their options. MDNA members can now tell their customers with confidence that the increased expensing limit is here to stay and will help them save a lot of money as they grow their manufacturing capability through the acquisition of used capital equipment purchases. **This is not tax advice and everyone should consult their own tax experts to evaluate their individual situation.
Excerpt from the National Association of Manufacturers’ Top 20 Facts About Manufacturing: Manufacturers have experienced tremendous growth over the past few decades, making them more “lean” and helping them become more competitive globally. Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed, and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due to the skills gap. Over the past 25 years, United States manufactured goods exports more than quadrupled. World trade in manufactured goods has more than doubled between 2000 and 2013—from $4.8 trillion to $12.2 trillion. Taken alone, manufacturing in the United States would be the ninth-largest economy in the world. Manufacturers in the United States perform more than three-quarters of all private-sector research and development (R&D) in the nation, driving more innovation than any other sector. The cost of federal regulations falls disproportionately on manufacturers, particularly those that are smaller. See the complete list here:http://www.nam.org/Newsroom/Facts-About-Manufacturing/

Trade Shows
The Public Relations Committee decided that MDNA will exhibit at both FABTECH 2016 and IMTS 2016 and is considering exhibiting at TECMA — Expo Bancomer Santa Fé, Mexico City, Mexico, in 2017.
Website
Website Analytics show that we had an overall increase of 33.82% in unique visitor page views to mdna.org. New content is needed for the website and we encourage people to write specialty articles of 1,000 words or less. These articles can be written about your specialty and will have the author’s name and company website for linking purposes. This is a win/win way of promoting yourself and the MDNA. Contact Jennifer Gray at the MDNA office for details.
Video
The PR Committee is working on plans to create a new end-user targeted association video. The committee is creating a survey to be given to end-users. The committee will then use the answers from the surveys to create a factual style video for MDNA to promote its members. MDNA Members can see a complete copy of the January Board Report by visiting the back office.
The PR Committee agreed on a new plan for the MDNA News which will allow them to save money and allocate the funds elsewhere in the new budget. They will offer the already twice per year printed and mailed editions of the MDNA News as an option for members to receive in digital, versus print. Going green!
