Toyota Corolla was launched in Japan in October 1966 as the main rival of the Datsun 1000 car, released a few months earlier than the Corolla.

The first car was produced with a 1000cc engine, a four -speed manual gearbox and a two-speed automatic transmission.

A little later, Toyota Corolla received a 1077cc engine due to increased competition with the same Datsun 1000, thus overtaking the competitor at 100cc.

And in August 1969 the engine was upgraded to a volume of 1166cc.

The first external market for Toyota Corolla was Australia. In 1966, right-handed copies of Corolla began to arrive there.
