Open Day at The Little Saturday 31 August 2019 10:00am-5:00pm
Our annual Open Day gives you a chance to look behind the scenes at The Little Theatre. Behind every actor on stage there is a huge supporting cast, from the lighting operator to the costume department, from the team who man the Box Office to the people who meet and greet you when you arrive. Come and see how it all works:
• Acting • Stage Management • Stage Crew • Sound • Lighting • Wardrobe and Dressing • Prompting • Props • Front of House & Box Office • Wigs and Hair • Costume Hire •… and more… Leicester Drama Society relies on the active support of its members – without them the show could not go on. Find out more and decide if you might like to join the crew.
No need to book – just turn up on the day! Not able to make the Open Day? The Little also holds shorter ‘Open Evenings’ on the Tuesday before each LDS Main House play – see p.26 for further details.

When you start life abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station, it’s difficult to convince the formidable Lady Bracknell of the respectability of your parents and your past. So how will Jack gain the hand of her daughter, the beautiful Gwendolen? And how can Jack and his cousin Algernon persuade Gwendolen and Cecily that they do not need to marry a man named Ernest? Described by its author, Oscar Wilde, as ‘A Trivial Comedy for Serious People’, this is a brilliant and wildly funny story of romance, mistaken identity, perambulators and capacious handbags.

This critically acclaimed double bill by Alan Bennett is typical of his sharp witty writing. The first, An Englishman Abroad, captures the sadness of a man caught between the East and the West when double agent Guy Burgess is visited in his squalid Moscow flat by actress Coral Browne. The second, A Question of Attribution, focuses on Anthony Blunt, who, despite being a known double agent, continued as The Queen’s Surveyor of Pictures until being publicly unmasked in 1979. This amateur production of “Single Spies” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD a Concord Theatricals company.

The hilarious story of eccentric tour guide Lettice Douffet who entertains visitors to a dull stately home by theatrically embellishing history with lurid stories. After her dismissal she persuades, with strong medieval drink, the Preservation Trust’s Inspector to act out dramatic events from history. Unfortunately their re-enactment of the death of Charles I goes wrong with unexpected results. Hailed by critics as one of Peter Shaffer’s funniest plays it had a long West End run with Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in the lead roles. This amateur production of “Lettice and Lovage” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD a Concord Theatricals company.

One of the most exciting works of the 20th century, and the playwright’s personal favourite, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. Set in the wealthy plantation home of Big Daddy and his family, the play focuses on the marriage of Brick, the ‘favoured’ son, and Brick’s beautiful, but desperately frustrated wife, Maggie, the ‘Cat’ of the title. Brick has distanced himself from the world with a screen of liquor, and Maggie strives to break through to find him again. This mesmerising play shows the destructive power of lies, and how families will avoid telling the truth in order to maintain a semblance of harmony and position. This amateur production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD a Concord Theatricals company, and by special arrangement with The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, USA.

ROBIN HOOD…. The story of men in tights! What’s not to like! Deep in the depths of Sherwood Forest lurks an evil Witch. Infuriated by the presence of Robin Hood and his band of faithful followers continuously stomping around her native undergrowth, she makes a deal with the unpopular Sheriff of Nottingham to rid Sherwood of anyone seen wearing Lincoln green. However, Robin will not desert his true love Maid Marian or fail to respond to the Sheriff’s hostile intentions towards her.
‘Not-Much-Use’ the Miller and his Mum ‘Dame Millie Muffin’, who run the local bakery, join Robin’s band to add plenty of laughs and panto slapstick, no doubt with a few fresh cream cakes thrown in for good measure. With all the traditional panto pandemonium wrapped up in beautiful costumes and stunning scenery, join in the merrie-making and revel in the festive spirit at Leicester’s Little Theatre!
Robin’s bow and arrow is all set to hit another panto bullseye – I don’t know about you, but my heart’s all aquiver!

A show about the things you forget, the things you remember, and the things you wish you could forget. But also, there's a bit about bums. An evening of brilliant stand-up from a fast-rising star. NEWS FROM THE LITTLE PARKING ARRANGEMENTS: We are fortunate in having a large reasonably priced public car park opposite the Theatre. However, it is becoming increasingly popular and does get full. We would suggest therefore that, to avoid stress and disappointment, you either plan to arrive earlier than you would normally to secure a place, or consider alternative travel arrangements. ALL-ENGLAND THEATRE FESTIVAL: Following its first appearance in last year’s Play Parade at The Little, Phil Wintle’s production of Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story went on to win ‘Winning Play’, ‘Best Direction’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ awards in the All-England Theatre Festival first round. It sailed through the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, and, as we go to press, has reached a place in the English Finals. Follow its progress on The Little Theatre website www.thelittletheatre.net OPEN EVENINGS: In addition to our annual Open Day (see p.2) The Little also holds an Open Evening on the Tuesday of the week before each LDS Main House Production. Meet at 7:00pm in the bar, but please ring the Box Office beforehand to confirm your attendance, as spaces are limited.
