2015/16 ENROLMENT When a student joins Meadowridge, their family joins too. Getting involved in the school community allows parents to be a part of their child’s schooling, contribute their own skills and knowledge, and make life-long friends with whom to travel alongside on their journey. What does it mean to be a part of the Meadowridge community? It means to live well, with others and for others… to meaningfully share your time and talents to make our school better.

ATHLETICS AT MEADOWRIDGE Athletics are a big part of our school, and for good reason. Our program is purposefully designed to balance fitness, skill development, and sport for all athletes. At its core, student participation is the focus: we want all our students – regardless of age, gender, fitness level, or experience – to have the confidence to try new things and to adopt a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

FOCUS ON FENCING One of the more unique, most highly-subscribed sports at Meadowridge began just seven years ago as a small club piloted by the efforts of one parent, Mr. Gareth Mason. In its infancy, the club piqued the curiosity of students and teachers alike, garnering more fencers and faculty support, including that of Mrs. Connie Chow-Go, a teacher who has been integral to the club’s continued growth.

STUDENTS INTRODUCED TO FENCING AT MEADOWRIDGE

Today, fencing has evolved into a continuum-wide club with over 50 fencers and offers all three weapons: foil, épée, and sabre. Meadowridge hosts the largest, three-weapon school fencing program in British Columbia. Our fencers now compete on the world stage, travelling to compete at provincial, national, and international levels, and consistently place in top rankings. In 2016, we hosted the fourth annual Meadowridge Youth Open Tournament, one of the largest fencing tournaments in the province, which draws in fencers from all over the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, and the United States.

ATHLETICS GUEST SPEAKER

Science Meets Sports

In January, Meadowridge welcomed international speaker and founder of Train Ugly, Trevor Ragan. Students and staff filled the bleachers to learn from his years of experience working with professional athletes, Olympians, and innovators in sports research.

There’s no substitute for hard work, dedication and a relentless desire to be better. As much as everyone wants to or wanted to win, wishing only got us so far. It was the countless hours in the gym, on the court, on the field, and outside of school that we spent working on our crafts that made us better. It was about coming out the other side better than you came in. Work ethic is the foundation of it all because everything is earned, not given. MEADOWRIDGE ALUMNI

Outdoor and Experiential Education Meadowridge offers a learning space unlike anywhere else; here, you’ll find a west coast playground where students and teachers have 27 acres designed for experiential learning, practical exploration, physical activity, and mental wellness. Few schools have the blessing of a forested park traversed by a fish-bearing waterway on campus. Our campus, along with our dedicated experiential learning programs, takes learning outside the traditional four walls of the classroom and into the real world.

How can someone raise money in their community to make a global impact with the skills they already have? How does the fermented biological matter in soft drinks affect specific taste criteria?

GRADE 12 EXTENDED ESSAYS DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

MENTAL HEALTH An inquiry into the perspectives of mental health, what causes poor mental health, and how we can take action to help people with mental health issues.

GRADE 10 PERSONAL PROJECTS MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME

GRADE 5 EXHIBITION TOPICS PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

At Meadowridge, at every grade level, our children pursue questions of personal interest to themselves. While there is a broad category of inquiry, students develop, research, and answer their own questions. In this way, learning becomes active, engaged, involved, and – most importantly – meaningful. These are just some examples… LANGUAGE & LITERATURE To what extent does a change in medium affect the ideas portrayed in a novel, as seen through The Picture of Dorian Gray? BUSINESS MANAGEMENT To what extent does above the line promotion promote the cause of non-profit organizations successfully, as measured by profit margins, such as the Canadian Cancer Society and Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation? HISTORY To what extent were George S. Patton’s personal motivation, leadership style, and battlefield strategy crucial during the capture of Sicily in 1943? BIOLOGY To what extent does increasing the concentration of floral dye affect the petal pigmentation intensity of Dianthus caryophyllus, measured by its absorbance intensity? CHEMISTRY An investigation of the amount of (+)-limonene extracted from different species of oranges by analyzing the concentration using steam distillation and polarimetry. PHYSICS To what extent does the string length of each mass in a double pendulum affect its period and movement?

What were the factors that revolutionized the jet engine’s evolution over the years?

VISUAL ARTS To what extent does the installation of public art influence the attitudes and functioning of modern Vancouver society?

How can I express the culture and history of Korea through pottery in an aesthetically appealing way?

THEATRE To what extent did realistic and expressionistic theatre styles develop modern day scenic design? MEADOWRIDGE SCHOOL 27

There are four strands of a Meadowridge education: academics, arts, athletics, and community service. The well-roundedness of our students is very important to us. We believe in educating not only our students' heads and hands, but their hearts as well; to this end, community service is an integral part of being a member of the Meadowridge community. To me, being a leader is not a title given to an individual: leadership stems from a community. In the Meadowridge community we are all leaders; in the classroom, on sports teams, in clubs and committees, the list continues. Being a leader at Meadowridge has taught me so much, and I’m very thankful for all the opportunities and lessons that have come from it. GRADE 10 STUDENT

In response to the devastating wild fires in Fort McMurray our students organized fundraising and awareness events in support of Fort McMurray. At the end of the week, students gathered on the front field to show solidarity with residents, gathering together to form the words ‘Fort Mac’ on our front field. Capturing the photo was a drone made by a Grade 10 student for his personal project (pictured left). MEADOWRIDGE SCHOOL 29

We are enamoured by the impressive facilities and are comforted belonging to an extended circle of likeminded families. But you and I also know that we wouldn’t stay at Meadowridge if we didn’t feel it was right for our children, that they weren’t being cared for or they weren’t being respected or nurtured into outstanding citizens. It is this steadfast reason that we have given year after year to annual giving.
