Traditional Irish Music was his founding, in 1959, of Claddagh Records to promote and disseminate the best of what was, and is, available in the genre.
In this setting, perhaps the m ost beautiful still in private hands in Ireland, Luggala finally came into its own in the twentieth century. Previously only used as an occasional retreat (and let out to

Delaney (whose works dot the Luggala landscape), Patrick Swift, Anthony Palliser, Barrie Cooke, Sonja Landweer and Camille Souter came to this valley to see their friend Garech a Brun.
He was also familiar, in London, with an important group of artists, including Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. Garech states that Freud taught him to ‘use his eyes’ when he was a young man and the success of this tutelage is evident in the judiciously high quality of the Luggala collections. Although he could not get his old friend, Francis Bacon, to return to Ireland, Browne was Instrumental in persuading John Edwards, Bacon’s heir, to donate to Ireland the extraordinary studio, which now graces the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin.
The eclectic mix of guests to the estate has included the musicians Leo Rowsome, Maire Aine Ni Dhonnchadha, Dolly McMahon, Tommy Potts, Liam O ’Flynn, Sean Garvey and Ronan Browne; the cooks Monica Sheridan, Theodora Fitzgibbon and Clarissa Dickson-Wright and the architects Michael Scott, Raymond McGrath and Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (the designer of the village of Portmeirion, where the cult television series ‘The Prisoner’ was filmed).

Part of Garech Browne’s life is associated with India and its culture and representative of that facet of his interests is a superb Anglo-Indian cabinet from Vizagapatam. Brought back to Ireland by General Sir Eyre Coote, it was acquired from a member of another family long associated with the commercial, life of Dublin, a Jameson.
Luggala and its collections represent two of the greatest periods in Irish culture, the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries. Exceptional pieces from one period harmonize successfully with outstanding pieces from the other. This juxtaposition is a fitting reminder of Luggala’s standing as one of the most important locations of Irish culture in the second half of the twentieth century.

A friend and supporter of Daniel O’Connell, he became, in 1835, under the administration of Lord Melbourne, Lord of the Treasury, First Secretary of the Admiralty and, in 1841, Secretary to the Treasury. He was the first civilian Governor of Malta, from 1847 until 1851, when he resigned because he would not serve under the Prime Minister, Lord John Russell, who had championed the Ecclesiastical Titles Act of 1851 in opposition to the Papal Bill of 1850 to restore a Catholic hierarchy in England. The son of a Coventry draper, he Rose through the rancks of the legal profession to become Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1767. A Barony followed in 17 6 8 and a Viscountcy thirteen years later. During his career his amassed a fortune of some £ 1 2 0 ,0 0 0 although, after his death, his children pleaded poverty and claimed that the sum was only a mere £ 4 ,0 0 0 . The records of the Court of Chancery dism issed this statem ent as ‘a gross untruth’ . He was variously, described as 'at all tim es affecting popularity....fear was the prudence of his life, caution his shield and tem per his fort.’ Lord Clonmell remembered Lord Lifford as saying ‘never give offence to any man; he will have power to resent it.’ After his death, 'upwards of 100 cases’ were waiting to be heard owing to 'the indolence of Lord Lifford, who in the last two years has only given two decrees.’ He died in Dublin of ‘a malignant sore throat.’ The title continues today.

A RARE IRISH MARQUETRY CABINET Irish, early 1 8 th Century
the moulded cornice above two marquetry panel doors, enclosing an arrangement of nine drawers, a centre cupboard also enclosing drawers, each inlaid with a floral arrangement, “birds and butterflies, on an urn,” supported with two cherubs, inlaid with mother-o-pearl and ebony, inside a crossbanded border, the side panels with stylized griffins under the urns, all raised on a later Irish carved stand, with central scallop shell, issuing scrolling leaves and flowers, on cabriole legs, with ball and claw feet, 6 3 " x 34" (160cm s x 86cm s). (1) € 1 5 ,0 0 0 /2 5 ,0 0 0 SEE ILLUSTRATION For a discussion on marquetry inlay on Irish furniture, see the Knight of Glen, “The Marquetry Description of Early 18th Century Irish Furniture”, Irish Arts Review, vol. 1 3 . The survival of this cabinet is of the utmost significance. Illustrated in Sadleir and Dickenson’s Georgian Mansions in Ireland (1 9 1 5 ) is a cabinet, now untraced, probably lost in the wanton destruction of Desart Court (plate XLIV) described as “English and Dutch”. The doors of which are patently by the same craftsman as the present lot. General Browne’s discovery of this piece and the Knight’s researches have ensured that an interesting facet of Irish craft has been recovered.

These four drawings appear to form part of the set of six originals which were engraved with variations to the stuffage and inscriptions in 1 7 5 3 by McArdill. They are vital to the topographical history of Dublin, being amongst the earliest considered vedute of the city and record many details for the first, some for the only, time.

Painted in 1 9 1 2 , titled, various exhibition labels on verso, including a Hugh Lane, Municipal Gallery of of Modern Art, Exhibition “Yeats at Municipal Gallery,” Register No: 4 7 .
'The Dawson Gallery frame and the Dawson Gallery Exhibition label.' Also titled “In a Dublin Waxworks”. (1)
Yeats was at the Dublin Waxworks in Henry Street in 1 9 0 5 , when he sketched ‘Marcus Antony who was assassinated in Rome in the year AD77 by his friends’. ‘Thousands have been heard to say he must be alive’ {sketchbook 1 0 6 [52]). The oil shows a Dublin urchin looking into the coffin with fascination at the figure with a dagger stuck into his breast. In April 1 9 1 4 , shortly before the waxwork show was destroyed by fire, Yeats published in A Broadside a drawing of the waxwork representation of the death of Lord Edward Fitzgerald, again viewed with wonder by a small boy.

Provenance; Talleyrand. Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord, Prince of Beneventc (February 2, 1754 - May 17, 1838). Although a non-believei he was, due to the influence of his father and family, appointed Bishop of Autun in 1789. Excommunicated by the Pope for his support of the French Revolution, he left Paris for London at the start of the Reign of Terror in September 1792. Two years later he settled in the United States where he stayed until his return to France in 1796. Although he supported Napoleon, whose Foreign Minister he became in 1799, he did not always agree with that great man’s policies and resigned his Office in 1807. Thereafter he worked actively against the Emperor’s ambitions, although his treachery was not uncovered in time. After Napoleon’s defeat he represented the restored Bourbon Monarchy at the Congress of Vienna, which had been convened by the Great Powers to settle the affairs of Europe. Napoleon once claimed that he could “ break him like a glass, but it is not worth the trouble” and, famously, that Talleyrand was “ shit in a silk stocking.” Talleyrand’s retort, after his master had stormed out of the room, was “ Pity that so great a man should have been so badly brought up!” His residence in Paris is now the Embassy of the United States of America. € 2 0 0 /3 0 0

His prompt action ensured the victory at Plassey (June 1 7 5 7 ) and given overall command he inflicted a series of crushing defeats over the French General Lally. Returning to Europe, well rewarded, he became an M.P and bought an estate in Hampshire. Following Hydra All’s revolt at Madras he was sent back to deal with the situation. Having visited Hydra AN he died in Madras in 1 7 8 3 .
