INTRODUCTION
Kilfane House, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny Three families have owned Kilfane House, namely the Bushes who built it (and the nearby Kilmurry House, Kilfane Cottage & Dangan Cottage); the Powers (baronets, founder members of the Kilkenny Hunt and the Kilkenny Theatre) who acquired it through the Bushes; and the current owners, the Clarke family. Col. John Bushe, an officer in Cromwell’s army received confirmation of a land grant in this area during the reign of Charles II (1649-85). He and his heiress wife, Mary Gray, settled at Kilfane perhaps in a house on the site of the present structure. In 1706, their son Amyas Bushe, who had married Eleanor, daughter of Sir Christopher Wandesforde of Castlecomer, became High Sheriff of County Kilkenny and is the most likely builder of the present house, which during the course of its existence was extended on more than one occasion, the last major renovation being c. 1845-6. Amongst the Trinity College Collections are the diaries of Viscount Stopford (later Earl of Courtown) who while on a visit to his kinswoman, the Lady Louisa Tighe, at nearby Woodstock, paid a courtesy call on Sir John Power, the second baronet (born 1798), who had succeeded his father the first Sir John Power in 1844, only to find him in the hands of his builder, with the consequence that lunch that day was served not in the formal eating room of the house but in a lesser apartment. Col. John Bushe also had a son, 4
Arthur of Dangan, who by his second wife Mary Forth, had a daughter Letitia Bushe (c. 1710-1757), who is remembered today as a fine watercolourist and painter as well as being a friend-companion of Mrs. Mary Delaney, another talented woman of that century. The Bushes had been people of note in County Kilkenny for some generations. Gervase Parker Bushe (died 1793 and one of the ‘Patriots’ of Grattan’s Parliament), was only son and heir of Amyas Bushe, by his wife Elizabeth Parker, and was MP for Kilkenny city in 1778-83. He was the great-grandson of the previously mentioned Amyas Bushe of Kilfane who had been MP for Thomastown, 1713-14. Gervase Parker Bushe also served as High Sheriff in 1768. In that same year he married Mary Grattan, the youngest daughter of James Grattan, Recorder and MP for Dublin, a sister of the Rt. Hon. Henry Grattan MP. This is the ‘Col’ Bushe who erected the fine water fountain in nearby Stroan, which was recently the subject of conservation. Despite having five sons, Kilfane in the course of time became the home of the Powers through the marriage (and a lease) of Sir John Power 1st baronet (cr. 1836) to Harriet Bushe (died 1853). Previous to that the Powers had been settled at Derrynahinch House, near Thomastown. The first two Sir John Powers were succeeded by Sir Richard Power the third baronet in 1873. The fourth and fifth baronets, sons MEALY’S EST 1934
of the third, died within months of each other in S. Africa during the Boer War, one of fever and the others as a consequence of war injuries, both unmarried and both without issue, their heir in the baronetcy being Sir George Power (died 1928), the fourth son of the second baronet. Like his uncle Richard, George was artistic and decided to make music his profession, training as a singer in Milan and Florence. Later he was associated with the London based D’Oyley Carte Company, who became famous for their presentations of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. But all that is to jump ahead in time. The heydays of the Powers and of Kilfane would have been in the first half of the nineteenth century. Major J.H. Connellan D.L. of Coolmore, Thomastown in his account of The Kilkenny Theatre 1802-1819 which was published in 1913 tells us: ‘It so happened that

shortly before the close of the eighteenth century two brothers, co-heirs of their uncle, named John and Richard Power came to reside in County Kilkenny. The former established the Kilkenny Hunt, and having married a daughter of Mr. Bushe (who was then dead), took a perpetuity lease of Kilfane, and there settled. His brother Richard had especial aptitude for acting, and, finding a congenial soil and a few practised amateur actors, conceived the idea of establishing a county theatrical company and giving performances for the benefit of local charities.’ The Langrishes of Knocktopher, the Floods of Farmley and Flood Hall and the Tighes of Woodstock were amongst these gentlemen to trod the boards of the Kilkenny Theatre, then housed in a building adjacent to the current Left Bank, just steps away from Kilkenny Castle. participating in the surrounding community both through friendships and through local organizations. Hal Clarke died in Atlanta in November, 2015.
Kilfane House which now hang in Rothe House, depict the former as a huntsman while the latter is portrayed as the Prince of Denmark, his most famous role. Miss May or ‘Maisie’ Power, the last of the Powers to live in Kilfane House, shortly before her death in the mid-1960s, presented the Power of Kilfane portraits to her kinsman Edmund, Count de la Poer of Gurteen-lePoer, Kilsheelan, Co. Tipperary, who in due course gave them to The Kilkenny Archaeological Society at Rothe House. Miss Power and her sister Vera Florence, were well known local figures. Like their ancestor Sir John, the first baronet, they both rode to hounds and it is as a huntress with the Kilkenny’s that we see Vera, later Mrs. Evans Johnson of Kilfane Cottage, in the photograph above, taken in the courtyard of Kilkenny Castle c. 1910. The future Lord Ossory, who later still became the 5th Marquess of Ormonde (died 1949) is the tallest man to her right.

THE CLARKE FAMILY The Clarkes became interested in Kilfane in the 1960’s when traveling through Ireland. In the early 1970’s, the family acquired the house and grounds thereby saving Kilfane from demolition and embarked on a multi-year effort to restore the house and to make it the summer home for Mary Louise and Hal Clarke. Kilfane became a vacation house for other Clarke family members, including the Clarke’s three children, their spouses and children. Hal and Mary Louise Clarke loved living at Kilfane in the summer, entertaining family and friends and 6
Hal Clarke was born in 1914 in Atlanta, Georgia USA. He had a long and colourful career that commenced in the office of the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto that came to an end upon the invasion of Pearl Harbor, after which he decided to volunteer for the U.S. Naval Reserve. After his Officer’s training at Princeton University, he was posted as Communications Officer to the newly commissioned LST373 that sailed to Europe. He participated in invasions at Sicily and was at Normandy at H-hour on D-day. He was then stationed in the Judge Advocate General’s office in Shanghai in the latter years of the War before returning to Atlanta soon after its conclusion, where he established Clarke and Anderson, a law firm where he specialised in real estate law and savings and loans law. The firm later expanded and became Mitchell Clarke, Pate, and Anderson. He was appointed by President Nixon in 1969 as the Democratic Member of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in Washington D.C. and during his tenure succeeded in transferring the Greensboro Federal Home Loan Bank to a more central location in Atlanta. He then returned to Atlanta in 1973 to resume the practice of law. Over his career he was very active in several prominent bar associations, including the Atlanta Bar Association (where he served as president), the ABA (where he was chairman of the Corporate Section, and later as Section Delegate to the House of Delegates), and the International Bar Association, where he played a key role in the establishment of the Association’s Building Society Committee, later serving as its chairman. However, law and diplomacy were but two aspects of this fascinating character, and his diverse interests were clearly reflected in the array of other organisations and societies that he was involved in, for instance: the Atlanta Historical Society; The Atlanta Branch of the English Speaking Union; the Ansley Park Civil Association; the Metropolitan Club of Washington D.C.; the Commerce Club; and the Piedmont Club in Atlanta, to name a few. He was also an active alumnus with his alma mater Washington and Lee University, and a member of the Board of Visitors of Emory University. In Ireland, he was a member of the Kilkenny Archeological Society, the Friends of St. Canice’s Cathedral, the Tulleherin Heritage Society, Kilfane Church, and others. A deeply religious Presbyterian, Mr. Clarke was ordained an Elder in 1959 and was an Elder Emeritus of Christ Church Presbyterian at time of his death. When in Ireland, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke MEALY’S EST 1934
worshipped at Kilkenny Presbyterian Church. His charitable and philanthropic legacy can be seen locally in the Kilfane Handball Club, the land for which was donated by him, together with the trophy for the Hal Clarke Cup. Hal Clarke married Mary Louise Hastings in 1951. Mr. Hal Clarke Snr. The couple had three children who worked with the senior Clarkes in the restoration of Kilfane. Over the years, five generations of Clarkes have visited and enjoyed Kilfane, its grounds and the local community.
SIR ANTHONY O’REILLY Possibly Ireland’s first billionaire, Sir Anthony is certainly one of Ireland’s most colourful personalities, and is best known for his sporting and business career. He represented Ireland, the British & Irish Lions, and the Barbarians, during his rugby union career, culminating in his inclusion in the International Rugby Hall of Fame.

His legendary business career included such illustrious roles as CEO, Chairman, and/or major shareholder in a variety of national and international companies, such as H.J. Heinz Company, Waterford Wedgwood, and Independent News and Media, to name just a few. He is also a well-known philanthropist, having established a number of charitable foundations, and made significant contributions to charity and education on a local and national level. He has been well-known throughout his career as a patron of the arts and an internationally renowned collector of fine & decorative art and antiques. A diverse array of antiques and decorative arts, many of which adorned his residence at Castlemartin in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare, are offered in this sale and the collection reflects his exquisite taste.

Collection can only take place during normal regular hours. Mealy’s shall not be responsible for lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed lots, if not collected within the allotted time frame. All lots not removed are subject to the minimum warehousing charges outlined below. Lots not removed within thirty days of the sale may be re-sold by auction or private sale without notice to the buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer, in respect of any loss, shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the purchaser of the lot. Storage and warehousing charges: Please note that there will be no charge to purchasers who collect their lots within five working days of the sale. After five working days has passed, a transfer and administration charge of €20.00 per lot will be payable and a storage charge of €2.00 per lot per day will then come into effect. These charges are payable by the purchaser to Mealy’s and are subject to VAT. House Clearance & Specialised Sales: the charges outlined above relate to our regular gallery sales. House Clearance sales and other specialised sales are subject to higher removal and storage charges that will be notified to buyers where relevant. Buyers should confirm the storage and warehousing charges for such sales in advance of bidding. If any buyer fails to comply with any of the above conditions, the damage recoverable from the defaulter shall includwe all loss arising from any re-sale of the lot, together with the warehousing charges and expenses in respect of both sales, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the auctioneer against the defaulters liability and may be appropriated in settlement of the liability. NB. Mealy’s do not offer packing or dispatch services. We strongly recommend that all bidders consult a professional shipping company. A list of approved service providers is available on request. 6.) FORGERIES: If within 30 days after the Sale of any item, the Auctioneer receives a notice in writing from the Buyers by Registered Post that such an item is a deliberate forgery, together with the necessary evidence to satisfy the Auctioneers of such an allegation, then the Sale of that item will be rescinded and the net Purchase monies refunded (less any outlays incurred by the Auctioneers) to the Purchaser.

TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR BUYERS
7.) CONDITION OF LOTS: All lots at auction are sold ‘as is’. Mealy’s act as agents for the seller and as such, are dependent on information provided by the seller. Whilst efforts are made to inspect lots and act reasonably in taking a general view about them, we are unable, in the normal course of business, to carry out detailed examinations of lots to ascertain condition. In addition, Mealy’s are not restorers, conservation experts or related professionals. Buyers are provided with ample time to examine lots and ascertain condition, and by bidding, accept the duty and responsibility for inspecting, examining and investigating lots that they intend to bid on. Imperfections, defects and other condition issues are not stated in the catalogue description. Mechanical objects of any age are not guaranteed to be in working order. 8.) CONDITION REPORTS: Condition reports may be requested by buyers in advance of the sale and our employees may be able to assist buyers by providing such reports. However, these are provided for guidance online, without legal obligation or prejudice to standard terms and conditions of sale. Such reports are merely the gratuitous opinion of Mealy’s employees or operatives. Neither Mealy’s, nor the seller, accept any responsibility for the condition of lots or for the content of condition reports. Subsequent disputes arising in relation to condition and/or the content of such condition reports will not be entertained. 9.) ABSENTEE BIDDING: Absentee bidding is available to prospective purchasers in the form of commission bidding & telephone bidding. However, registration for absentee bidding must be completed by 5pm on the day preceding the sale. Mealy’s accept no liability for acts or omissions relating to bids received after this deadline. From time to time, Mealy’s will entertain absentee bidding requests received after the deadline has passed, but this is at the discretion of our employees and Mealy’s accept no responsibility for accuracy in the execution of such bid requests received after the deadline. All items purchased by absentee bidders are sold as is, and are assumed to have been viewed and inspected by the purchaser. In the case of commission bids, these will be executed by Mealy’s as cheaply as possibly, having regard to the reserve (if any) and competing bids. If two bidders submit identical commission bids, the auctioneer has sole discretion to determine the successful buyer, but will generally opt for the first commission bid received. Telephone bidders are reminded that telephone lines are inherently subject to technical issues. It is strongly advised that telephone bidders leave a ‘cover bid’, e.g. a commission bid with their maximum bid price, to account for situations in which technical issues result in telephone bidding problems. Once an absentee bid is received, a contractual agreement is in place and the bid cannot be revoked without express agreement in writing signed by the auctioneer. 10.) ONLINE BIDDING: Mealy’s offers online bidding services to those who cannot attend the sale via the-saleroom.com & artfact.com. Bidding registration for online bidding must be completed by 5pm on the evening preceding the sale day. A surcharge of 3% will be levied on the ultimate hammer price, in addition to the regular buyer’s premium of 20%, for successful purchases executed using this service. Since online bidding is hosted by 3rd parties, Mealy’s accept no liability whatsoever for disputes arising from same. We strongly encourage all prospective buyers to utilise our absentee bidding services in priority. Online bidders contract with the online auction host directly, not with the auction house. However, by registering with an online auction host, the bidder: - authorises Mealy’s, if they so wish, to charge the credit card given to the online auction host, in part or full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased -confirms that he or she is authorised to provide these credit card details and is indeed the account holder 11.) AUCTION DISPLAYS AND ONLINE IMAGES: Images are used to display items for Sale at Auction. This service is merely a reminder to the customer of items viewed previously during exhibition days. We do not guarantee the quality or condition of the item viewed, the accuracy of the display image or guarantee the item on display is the item being sold. Subsequent disputes arising as a result of such image displays will not be entertained. 12. MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL ITEMS AND POST - 1950 FURNITURE: Mechanical & electrical are sold as ‘antiques’ only, for decorative purposes. There is a duty on the buyer to have such items checked for compliance with safety regulations by a qualified expert. Please note the Auctioneers offer no after sale guarantee whatsoever with regard to mechanical and electrical items. We accept no subsequent liability for any damage, loss or injury arising from the use of the foregoing. All items of furniture in this sale are offered for sale as works of art. Such items may not comply with safety regulations and should not be used functionally unless inspected by a relevant expert. 13.) EXPORT OF GOODS: Buyer’s intending to export goods purchased at Mealy’s should ascertain the following in advance of bidding: - Whether an export license is required - Whether there is any specific prohibition on exporting/importing goods of that character (e.g. CITES regulations) 14. DISPUTES & AGENCY: In the event of any dispute arising in relation to any of the foregoing, the matter shall be referred to an Independent Arbitrator to be agreed between the relevant parties. As auctioneers, we generally contract as agents for sellers whose identity, for confidentiality reasons, is not normally disclosed. Accordingly, a buyer’s primary contract is with the seller. 15. THIRD PARTY LIABILITY: All members of the public that enter on our premises at any time, for whatever reason do so at their at their own risk. Inaddition, Mealy’s will not be responsible for any damage or loss caused to vehicles parked in the vicinity of our premises.
By participating in our sales, all bidders and buyers acknowledge that they have read the above terms and agree to be bound by our conditions of sale.
