Matty Ryan cantered throughout his sixty five years with the sparkle of the jewellery he created, the grace of Frescobaldi - his beloved mare, and the humanity illustrated by his epic fundraising for charity. Sleep was never his priority, given his motto Life if for Living. He believed that enjoying oneself was far more important than sleeping. A jeweller by trade, who counted Princess Margaret and others connected with the British royal family among his esteemed customers, it was often said that he could talk with crowds and keep his virtue and walk with kings nor lose the common touch. Many of these aristocratic customers were also his close friends. He was famous for his love for racing, the hunt and other equestrian pursuits; bolstered by his astute skills in socialising and networking; his sartorial elegance and connoisseurship; and his charitable endeavours, especially those relating to the North Tipperary Hospice Home Care, for whom he raised €1.5m during his tenure as chairman and chief fundraiser. Lesser known strings to his broad bow were his photography, jam-making, the dying art of hand-writing and his first place in the Irish leaving certificate examination in Algebra. His home over the shop on Liberty Square in Thurles was ‘stuffed with beautiful artefacts’. A selection of these are now offered for sale, including jewellery, paintings, furniture, works of art, ceramics, and other personal property.

Valuation. He also held land in the parish of Glenkeen, barony of Kilnamanagh Upper, while John Greene and Francis Greene held land in the parishes of Clonoulty, barony of Kilnamanagh Lower and Relickmurry and Athassel, barony of Clanwilliam. The latter was held from Colonel Ashworth. Nicholas B. Grene, born 1806, married Catherine only daughter of Clement Willliam Sadlier of Shrone Hill, county Tipperary and was succeeded by his eldest son Clement James Grene in 1882. John Grene of Cappamurra married Anna Maria Delaney and died in 1877 when he was succeeded by his eldest son James William Grene. In the 1870s John Grene of Dublin owned 611 acres, while Nicholas B. Grene of Grenepark owned 791 acres in county Tipperary.

The house at Grene Park dates from the mid 19th century and was built for Nicholas B. Grene. Griffith’s Valuation records Nicholas B. Greene occupying a house valued at £29.15 shillings, held from the representatives of Robert Usher. According to the records on Irish landed estates, John Grene (or Greene) held land in the barony of Kilnamanagh

Lower, county Tipperary, from Robert and Helen Usher from the 1830s. His daughter Maria married James Barry of Sandville in Limerick in 1837. His son Nicholas Biddulph Greene held the townland of Clonaspoe in the parish of Oughterleague, barony of Kilnamanagh Lower from the representatives of Robert Usher at the time of Griffith’s

This William IV period house still contained many of its original contents untouched and in their original setting, including several quality pieces of William IV period furniture, together with portraits, landscapes, decorative arts and other chattels. The entire contents are presented in this sale.

452 A Chinese zesede shuijing (purple quartz or amethyst) ritual vessel or talisman, Qing Dynasty, possibly Qianlong, the tall perfect crystal of large proportions, profusely and exquisitely carved and modelled as a gnarled and knotted plum blossom tree segment coming into bloom, decorated with birds, branches and flowers and flanked with stalks to its sides. Resembling in its complexity a miniature scholar’s rock, the crystal exudes the typical qualities of a garden rock, namely zhou, shou, and tou (rough, craggy and holey) and bears Shang period type script denoting water along the sides; with wide top and a narrow base (cloud top and rain base), and also two inscriptions, the first Nei Fu, i.e. the Interior part of the living quarters of the palace, the second inscription is Yang Xin Dian, i.e. the Hall of Mental Cultivation. From 17231736,Yang XIn Dian or the Hall of Mental Cultivation effectively became the centre of Yongzheng’s working life and therefore was the centre of the Qing empire during that time. Qianlong followed his father Yongzheng in ruling China from the Hall of Mental Cultivation. 9.5” (23cms)h. Elliptical cavity 2.5” (6cms)w x 1.5” (3.75cms)d. Provenance: The property of Lim Boon Keng, OBE (Chinese: 林文慶; Peh-ōe-jī: Lîm Bûnkhìng; 18 October 1869 – 1 January 1957), the Chinese doctor, scholar, orator, business man and leader, renowned for social and educational reforms in Singapore and China. To the present owner by descent. Note: Lim, of Chinese Peranakan descent, with ancestry from Hai Teng district in Fujian, China (the first Malayan to receive a Queen’s scholarship) graduated from Edinburgh University in 1892, with a First Class Honours degree in medicine at age 25. He went to China to encourage the Manchu imperial dynasty to seize opportunities for enterprise in China and to enhance their role as bridges between East and West. The Chinese crisis from within by 1901 reinforced with the study of the ‘social condition’ proved particularly shameful for the very sensitive young nationalist to be. In 1912, he was appointed confidential secretary and personal physician to Sun Yat-sen, the first president of the Chinese Republic. Known as the grand old man of Singapore, during the Japanese Occupation, he would sooner feign a drunken stupor rather than co-operate with the conquerors. See illustration
