GLENN COUNTY

FAIR

MAY 16 -19

Welcome...

to the 103rd Glenn County Fair! This year we are excited to honor the Glenn County Agriculture Community with this year’s theme of “Let the Good Times Grow!”. The last year has been trying on our community. We welcome fair time with open arms as a chance to unwind and have some fun with family and friends. The 2019 Fair continues with traditions set year’s prior. Favorite events like The Little Miss and Miss Glenn County Pageants will take Center Stage on Thursday, the Parade on Friday Night, and the Junior Livestock Auction and Destruction Derby are happening Saturday. There are lots of new events to go around too! Thursday at 7:00 PM for the first time at the fair is vintage tractor pulls hosted by the Vintage Iron Tractor Club in Chico and a Tuff Truck Race on Saturday during the Derby. There will be plenty of free, family fun entertainment happening daily around the fairgrounds for all to enjoy. Catch All-Alaskan Pig Races in the Depot Circle, Matt Henry’s Big Bubble Show and Comedy Juggling Performances, Kids Petal Tractor Pulls, Magic by Magic Man Frank, Washboard Willy, Hypnosis and Mind-Bending Shows by The Preceptives and an interactive children’s circus appropriately named the Cutest Show on Earth. Also, open daily is the Orland, Newville and Pacific Railroad and Depot and Heritage Trail. All these shows and activities are free with your fair admission. There will also be local performances aplenty. Local Bluegrass Bands; Willows Bluegrass, Mill Creek Rising and Four for the Gallows will be performing on Friday and Saturday. Music Express, the Orland High School Music Department and Aloha Dancers will also be gracing Fair Stages during the Four-Day run. The talented Amanda Gray from Yuba City will be preforming on Saturday Night. Local talent is also featured in the Flaherty Hall and Arts & Crafts Building through the still exhibits. All your favorite fair foods are back with a couple new foods to enjoy like Thai Thai BBQ and Coffee Café located on the main food row across from Butler Amusements. Don’t miss Faye’s Sweet Shop and all the shopping in the Whitsett Cook Commercial Building. On behalf of the Fair Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers we hope you enjoy your time at the 103rd Glenn County Fair!

Thank You

November 8th, 2018, a day many of us will remember for years to come. When the Camp Fire tore through Paradise, everyone was affected in one way or another. The Glenn County Fairgrounds, like many other fairgrounds and facilities in the area, was opened as an evacuation shelter. For three weeks, Local, State and National Volunteers worked 24 hours a day serving the needs of those who had lost everything. The Glenn County community stepped up and welcomed the evacuees with open arms. Donations poured in and the list of people willing to donate their time was long. The Glenn County Fairgrounds continues to support those affected by the Camp Fire through housing RV’s on the fair’s property. We couldn’t be prouder of Glenn County and just want to say THANK YOU for helping our neighbors in need! The support, willingness to help and welcoming spirit has not gone unnoticed.

A Favorite Family Tradition

Glenn County Fair Parade

Friday, May 19th at 6:00pm • Downtown Orland Thank you Sheri Sudberry for 25 years with the Glenn County Fair How long have you been helping with the Junior Exhibits? This is my 25th fair, so 25 years of helping with the Junior Exhibits. What do you look forward to every year? I look forward to the kid’s tours. It’s been a real joy over the years to see their face’s light up when the kids see their art on display with a ribbon. It’s exciting for me, I got to see my children and now my grandchildren’s face’s. What are some things that kids can look forward to seeing in this area of the fair this year? The last few years we’ve had a LEGO display, the kids get very excited to see this. I hear this year it’s going to be bigger and better. Can’t wait to see what comes this fair season. Tell us what you love most about your local fair. The community coming together and see old friends. And, Miss Glenn County Pageant is always a highlight.

Where Are They Now? Bailey Morrell

Bailey Morrell is 18-years-old and enrolled as a freshman at Colorado State University. She is double majoring in Agricultural Education with a concentration in Agricultural Literacy and Political Science with a concentration in Environmental Policy. Bailey was raised on a seedstock Hereford and Angus cattle ranch in Willows, California and competes nationally in the show ring. In addition, her and her family also produces almonds, walnuts, and hay. Bailey recently graduated from Willows High School as valedictorian of her class and as an active member of the Willows FFA Chapter where she held chapter, section, and regional officer positions and was awarded in the beef and forage production proficiency areas and as Star Farmer at the state level. She has also been featured in two podcasts, “Off the Farm Income” and “Imagine If.” Bailey plans to pursue a career in the Agricultural law or lobbying field to follow her passion of advocating for the future of the agriculture industry and giving a voice to agriculturalists. She remembers the Glenn County Fair as one of her favorite weeks of the year. Bailey raised her own steers for the county fair and was successful in the show

ring and humbled by support in the sale ring each year. Bailey was welcomed into the community her freshman year after transferring schools to Willows High School and can recall how fortunate she was to be welcomed as a member of the Willows FFA Chapter and Glenn County Fair community from the very beginning. She has learned many lessons in the nine years of county fairs and thirteen years of showing cattle. Bailey emphasizes that hard work and dedication to your project is the basis for succeeding at the county fair. She uses her experiences talking to community members at the fair each year as a basis for conversations with individuals who are outside of the agriculture industry. Bailey’s most significant advice for young members of 4-H and FFA is to take the time to thank your 4-H leaders and FFA Advisors for everything they have done for you and your project. Also, she encourages members to make the most out of their time in these organizations by building friendships with members from other clubs in our county, and engaging with the Glenn County Fair community. Bailey will always be grateful for the support shown to her at the Glenn County Fair and for the memories.

Katie Boles

Katie believes that the Glenn County Fair is the heart of the community. She has gone from being an exhibitor showing horses, sheep, pigs and steers a long time ago to now being a 4-H leader and teacher in the community. The fair has been a very important part of her life and she treasure all of her wonderful experiences. It is important to Katie to help kids continue to be involved in the fair, whether it be showing livestock, or exhibiting school art and Home Ec. projects. Katie feels fair is something everyone in Glenn County looks forward to and can be involved in.

Shelby Weinrich

Today, Shelby is in a place where she dreamed of being at an early age. Her journey began when she was nine years old. It was a cool January afternoon when she met her first 4-H project. Ironically, her name was Journey. Shelby knew that her life had been changed from this day forward. Journey was a metaphor for the change in her family and the strength this project gave her to be persistent in moving forward. From then on she learned at an early age how important it was to have a hard work ethic, to be prepared, and dedicated to everything she set her mind to. This journey led her to the love of showing swine all across the United States for the next ten years, eventually ending up in Stillwater, Oklahoma attending Oklahoma State University. Shelby is grateful for all the memories, especially those of the

Glenn County Fair. One of her fondest memories was early on when her sisters and she all were in the champion drive together. Although Shelby did not win,she was so proud of all the tears, the hard work, and the friendships she had made throughout her years in the ring. This was another moment that made her realize it is not about winning or losing it is about being grateful for the opportunities and relationships gained throughout life. She is now busy double majoring in agribusiness pre-law and human and family developmental sciences at OSU along with working for Next Level Show Camps and completing her final round of interviews for the National Junior Swine Association Board. Although her career of showing is over, the memories, friendships, and opportunities will always be an integral part of her life and led her to where she is today.
