Colusa Valedictorian I won’t lie and call Colusa the most incredible and impressive place I have ever seen. We are just one in a thousand dots on the map, cars flow through the area like any other town on any other corner of the world, unknowingly overlooking the richness and depth of every beating heart on the sidewalk. No, we are not incredible, but that is not to say that Colusa is not special. To each person in this town, I can see that this small little place of ours has transformed us into a better being. Colusa has nourished our dreams and goals, knowing we might not return one day, but making sure our time here is well spent. These past four years I have seen what the world has to offer without having to leave our small town; the friendships and connections, the smiles and laughs remind us that we are here for each other as a community. Our time in Colusa was not for nothing, it will never be for nothing. It meant something. When I leave for college this fall, maybe I won’t ever recall my sixth period science lesson again nor the endless slides from history, but the way our teachers looked so proud or the way we learned to treat each other like family on that final outdoor trip, those memories will stick with me forever. And maybe one day, we might turn the sky once again and greet the sun together. Edgar Cruz Vasquez, Valedictorian

Colusa Salutatorian I am proud to be graduating from this small town with this class because I believe in the latin saying “sic parvis magna” or greatness from small beginnings. To me, this quote holds hope for the future. That it does not matter if we came from a small town and small beginnings, we can end up wherever we want so long as we are determined and work for it. As we look back on our eighteen years together and remember all of the good, bad, and interesting times just remember one thing. What is coming is better than what has gone so do not cry because it is over, smile because it happened. Chaena Laux, Salutatorian

Maxwell Valedictorian Professor Stephen Hawking once said “Remember to look up at the [stars] and [then] down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up”. As you look up in the sky right now, you can see there are around 100 billion stars about to shine through the night once the sun goes down. As I look at my classmates, I see 23 shining stars about to shoot off into their next chapter. While normal stars are chemically made of hydrogen and helium, these 23 stars are made of perseverance, intelligence, ambition, and so much more. Now that you have all looked up at the stars, look back down at your feet. See where you are now, at the end of one long journey and ecstatic to begin the next. The next journey may seem a little petrifying or confusing, but like Stephen Hawking said, try to make sense of what you see. Through our eyes, we see a world full of opportunities and growth as human beings. As young adults, it is our job to jump into that world feet first and take all the risks that we can. Without risk, we would be holding ourselves back from practicing all of the important lessons that this small community has taught us. This year has not been the easiest for all of us, going through a pandemic at the end of your high school career is a big bump in the road, but try to see it as a lesson of strength. As you reflect on these past 13 years of schooling, see all the good that it has brought us and all of the value you can take with you as you leave this small, one blinking light town. No matter how far we all part ways, the teachers and faculty in this district will always be here for a helping hand and support. Even though you might seem a little lost right now about what you plan to do in the future, the stars and constellations will align as long as you never give up. Remember to stay curious and always be working towards something meaningful to you. You will all shine bright in everything that you strive to be. The graduating class of 2020 will always appreciate the positivity and support that this community has given us even though it has not been the ideal ending we had hoped for. All of our future journeys are waiting for us, but it’s our jobs to take that leap into the new beginnings. To my classmates, go out into the world with curiosity and hopefulness; you all have so much potential and can succeed at everything you put your minds to. Stars are meant to light up the sky when it’s dark, so when it gets tough remember to stay positive and keep radiating your light. Class of 2020: shoot for the stars, you all can accomplish anything you put your minds to. Jilliann Wilson Class of 2020 Valedictorian Class of 2020 President

Maxwell Farewell Speech for Graduation Time. The English dictionary describes the word “time” as “indefinite,” that is one way to explain a concept so vast, but it is not one every person takes into account on a daily basis. For example, going into high school, everyone tells you: “high school will fly by in a blink of the eye,” of course we do not believe them at first. We spend what feels like a lifetime, waiting for the first day of freshman year. Remembering back to that first day of kindergarten, where we were terrified but yet overjoyed with excitement to meet our new friends and classmates. Flash forward, to seventh grade, here we thought we were high schoolers but were not quite there yet. We could feel how close we were but only at the edge of our fingertips. Flash forward a bit more and it’s finally here. We walk into high school as freshman, and it’s like we are the top of the world, but in high school terms, we are at the bottom of the food chain. Blink once and finally here we are at last, in our blue caps and gowns, graduating and parting ways. Where did the time go? Hello everyone, my name is Melissa Ramirez and I am honored to deliver the Farewell Address, on behalf of the Maxwell High Class of 2020. For four years we woke up to the sound of a rooster in the distance and the church bells ringing. In the fall we were enveloped in the bright Friday night lights as they lit up the entire town, and the sound of the announcer reached every house in every neighborhood. In the summer we all smiled as the weather got warmer and the rodeo got closer, we were so eager to bring our community together. Every night we fell asleep to the water tower standing guard and the blinking red light illuminating the center of the town. So many things have been there all along, but yet we do not always take the time to notice them. Then, there are the details that we do notice every time. Like how every morning, Mr. Cabral’s room smells like a Starbucks, or how our class meetings either consist of complete silence or a chaotic mess, there was never an in-between. Or, how every rodeo was either scorching hot or pouring down rain, and there was never an in-between there either. We also realized as freshmen, to never use paper as a base for a homecoming float, it will not make it out of the parking lot. These last four years so many things have happened, in what feels like such little time. As a class, we have cried, loved, and laughed together. But most importantly, we have found our passions. Whether that be serving our nation’s military or furthering our education to become teachers, nurses, lawyers, veterinarians or engaging in many more fields of work. It is beautiful to think that we began as shiny new freshmen with a spark in our eyes, , and here we stand now as young adults, only looking toward the future. Of course, our class’s history is not a beautiful painting, there are some rough edges and tough times we went through. For a long time, we looked forward to our senior year or the year 2020

in general. I mean how cool does it sound to say “oh yeah, I’m graduating in 2020,” it’s iconic. In our heads we had this image, that image was close to perfection. In the last couple of months we and the rest of the world were thrown a major curveball, and to say the least it hurt. What should have been some of our last seasons of baseball and softball, were no longer a thing, our athletes were not going to see home base again. What once would have been our last prom dance, also vanished before our eyes. The senior trip we took so many years imagining and planning, unfortunately could not happen. Many say that the spread of COVID 19 paused the world in it’s steps, but it did much more than that. Someone once said, “Yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that’s why it’s called ‘the present.’” Just because our story of how we graduated into the real world started with a sad beginning, it doesn’t define who we are as a class and as individuals. What is important is how we choose to write the rest of our stories. If you had asked me what I wanted to be in kindergarten, I would have said, “an astronaut, because everything is cooler in space.” Standing here now, I know that although space is fascinating, I know I prefer to one day stand in the White House. Many of us can agree that our dreams and aspirations have grown tremendously since kindergarten, and we have learned that that’s okay. That explains the concept about the future, it only is what we decide it to be. The legacy that we leave behind will be one that we write as time moves forward. By all means, we would not be here today without the staff here at Maxwell High, we are grateful for the legacies that taught us how to write ours. For many of us, you made us fall in love with the careers we have chosen, or have given us memories to laugh about for years to come. We apologize for the headaches, unintelligent questions and comments, and the potential tears. You have been some of our best hellos and now some of our hardest goodbyes. To our parents, where do we start, thank you for giving us the pen and the paper to write our stories. Thank you for giving us the independence to write it all on our own, while admiring from afar and being there through the good and the bad. To our community, thank you for accepting our flaws and allowing us to grow before your eyes. It is the individuals that live here that have pushed us to be who we are. Thank you for everything you have given us. Lastly, to my classmates, as we part ways, I ask you to do one thing, do not forget where you came from. It has been my honor and something I will always hold close to heart that I was among some incredible individuals and got to see your personal growth and development throughout the years. Years from now when you have all accomplished incredible things, it will be my privilege to say I was among you. But, I do have one more thing to ask, as you part ways and leave Maxwell for the last time, pay notice to certain things. As you drive through town, roll down the window and smell the country air from the rice fields and tree orchards, look out and see the mountains of East Park behind you, that same water tower always looming and standing guard, and let the warm wind blow through your hair. You will then arrive at a crossroads, some of us will drive straight, take a left or right. Whatever direction you might take, look back at the blinking red light and know that it is always there to blink hello and say goodbye. Ladies and gentlemen, this is our farewell to you. Thank you. Melissa Ramirez

Maxwell Principal’s Message Dear Maxwell High School Graduating Class of 2020, Throughout your 13-year education, you have worked and studied, practiced and played, and grown. Grown mentally as well as physically. Your graduation recognizes the hard work and accomplishments you have achieved to receive your high school diploma. Let me suggest that the last 13 years were not to end or to conclude a portion of your life but to prepare you to begin a new life. For some of you this will mean a career and the responsibilities of independent living. For others, it will mean serving our great country in the military. Moreover, for others, it will mean college and further years of study and preparation for your career goals. Whatever course your future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years at Maxwell High School as having prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. In addition, I would like to think we, along with your families, have helped you develop empathy for others. In my opinion, this trait is the most important to a happy and fulfilling life. What you say and do matters. Strive to make a positive difference in the world and for others. As you begin a new journey, my advice is to keep it simple and follow your heart. Do not spend too much time planning your future that you ignore the present. On behalf of myself and the faculty and staff of Maxwell Unified School District, I wish to each and every one of you the happiness of a productive life, the respect of your fellow human beings, and the love of family. May the future be yours. I wish you the Best of luck and congratulations to the Maxwell High School graduating class of 2020! Sincerely, Zach Thurman

Pierce Valedictorian I would like to start off by saying how honored I am to be standing here in front of you all. I would also like to thank all the parents, family members, teachers, mentors, and administrative staff who have supported us, and especially those who have stuck with us since the beginning. Here in the Pierce Joint Unified School District, we are privileged to be able to reminisce all the way back to kindergarten and remember how we would all play tag in that AES playground only a mile down the road. We’ve helped each other grow and experienced each other’s joy, sadness, pain, success, and even failure. And through all that, we have grown closer to each other and have truly created a sense of community here in Arbuckle. This is what makes Arbuckle and surrounding areas special, we naturally have what would be a major feat in other places. This sense of community and belonging has been established by only one factor— the people. This small town is full of kind, generous, and empathetic people that want to help each other grow. And it is this environment that has truly allowed the class of 2020 and me especially garner the strength to believe in ourselves. Alejandro Centeno, Valedictorian

Pierce Salutatorian

It was just over eight years ago when my life was changed forever. When my parents made the decision to move from the small town of Maxwell to the slightly larger town of Arbuckle, I remember feeling absolutely terrified. While a twenty mile move may not seem immense to many, to me, it felt like my world was crumbling. Maxwell was all I had ever known; it was my home, my community. Walking into my fourth grade classroom for the first time, I recall being surrounded by strangers, feeling alone for the first time in my life. But, that feeling of loneliness was short-lived. Soon, I was welcomed into friendships by people who I still have the pleasure of calling my closest friends. I built a tight-knit community of people in a place where I thought I could not. Today, I cannot imagine calling anywhere other than Arbuckle and Pierce High School my home became of the amazing communities I built within our small community itself. From the FFA to the staff at Pierce High School, I have found people who have surrounded me with unwavering support. I thank my parents everyday for making the move because it allowed me to learn just how incredible it is to build new circles. I know, as we make our way into the world, whatever our path may be— to college or into the workforce—I am confident we, our resilient class, will find our communities and build new homes.
