Julien De Repentigny

3D Typography

Julien de

R epen tign y Julien de Repentigny is a graphic designer from Montreal, Canada. His work is three dimensional graphic design. Repentigny uses materials such as paper, ice and candy to transform words, phrases, and quotes into works of art. His work fuses words with textures and colors to give them a deeper meaning. Unlike the majority of three dimentional graphic designers of the era, he does not follow the flow of the completely computer-reliant generation.

“I am into graphic design, set design and three dimensional typography, my work is base with neon lights, acrylic, and paper.”

VERSAT I LE & INNOVATIVE REPENTIGNY brings diversity to the world of three dimensional typography. His works ranges from brochure and paper designs for commercial clients and pieces for his own creative endeavors. He has made an incredible spectrum of work ranging from carton designs for milk and perfume, to magazine covers, photographs for shoe companies, and set designs inspired from movie quotes. Set Design (C) Repentigny is known for taking quotes and individual words from movies or play and using them to create sculptures. For example the image on the top left (C1) features a play on words using the word “Rotten” to show how being spoiled with candy can turn someone rotten. The bottom image (C2) demonstrate how sweet “Fame” is. Fashion (D) Working with cut paper, Repentigny designed these sunglasses with the wording “FFFound Binoculars” and “I wear my sunglasses at work”.

Pictured on the right are some sample images showing the variety of Repentigny’s work. Packaging Design (A) Featured on the right hand side is the word “MILK” which was a creative experimental project to create cardboard packaging. The design uses Helvetica font to literally spell and spill out the product inside. Commerical Endeavors (B) Working as both an art director, illustrator, and graphic designer in collaboration with Chris Turner, the “Performance” artwork was created for the Performance Footware Company. Below, (B2) shows a illustration created with real ice for a Mec Plus Ultra flyer.

“The idea for this illustration (E) came from the era we live in. Everything is now being digitalize and the need for paper will soon become obsolete. Ironically the whole image is produce with paper.” —Repentigny

WESTWOOD HOTEL PROJECT

All photos on this spread are works featured in Repentigny’s Westwood Hotel branding project.

This menu, as well as these coasters, envelopes, and door hangers, serve a part of the identity of a boutique hotel. The wooden tones and minimal design of these objects, made out of cut-out letters, are meant to emphasize the prestige associated with this hotel. â€”Repentigny

EXPERIMENTATION: 3 D FONT - HELVETICA In response to his work entitled “Milk”, Repentigny decided to do a collaborative project with another artist, Gabriel Lefebvre, and create an entire alphabet of Helvetica font letters. With these letters, he then created a two set designs.

After the cardboard creations were done, he then recreated them in a series made of styrofoam for one of Montreal’s biggest design angencies, UQAM, in a design exhibition in 2008. The works, reading “08 DESIGN” and “0” are examples of this project.
