August 3-5, 2007 • Lafayette, Louisiana

Welcome to MechaCon 3.0! MechaCon began as the first convention of its kind, combining the genres of Anime, Transformers, and Japanese Culture. Whether you are a fan of one or all of these genres, MechaCon continues to offer something for everyone. Here at our third annual convention, fans can enjoy everything from vegging out on the latest and hottest anime titles to learning the basics of the Japanese language to going back to the origins of Transformers with the 3-part, More Than Meets the Eye episodes that started it all. No matter your preference, you’re sure to find something to enjoy at MechaCon 3.0! Beginning on Friday night, attendees of our Opening Ceremonies and Formal / Semi-Formal Dinner will be entertained by our very own seasoned blend of anime improv on the bayou called “Anime-niacs”. Prepare to kick the convention off with lots of laughs as veteran actors Michael Dobson, Tiffany Grant, Mike McFarland, and Scott McNeil have their improvisation skills put to the test by our host, MechaCon’s own Ai no Shinobi. Friday night’s fun continues with the MechaCon House Party, featuring the spinning stylizations of DJ Wildfire. If music and dancing isn’t your cup of tea, check out our new Midnight Madness in the Dungeon for some late night table-top gaming action! After dancing or gaming the night away, make sure to get lots of rest because Saturday and Sunday will be jam-packed with more things for you to enjoy. Cultural and anime panels, multiple viewing rooms, our extensive dealers room, electronic gaming tournaments, table-top gaming tournaments, our cosplay competition, our AMV competition and more, are just the tip of the iceberg. Saturday’s Ouran High School Host Club event, special concert featuring Lisa Furukawa, night two of Midnight Madness in the Dungeon, and MechaCon House Party: Redux round out the day’s events, leading into Sunday’s charity auction benefiting Faith House, and so much more! We are pleased to have you join us as we continue to grow, and provide you with the best convention experience Louisiana has to offer. Please enjoy our newly optimized MechaCon 3.0... and be sure to join us again in 2008 for MechaCon IV, as we’ll be “Pushing the Sky!” – Team MechaCon

A Word from the Sennin “People in China were asking me about MechaCon.” - Kevin McKeever of Harmony Gold Imagine our surprise at hearing this statement. Word has traveled half the world away about our little convention in south Louisiana. Mr. McKeever told us how the people of China were thrilled to hear that after the devastation caused by the savage hurricanes of 2005, the citizens of Louisiana were recovering and that our anime convention was alive and well. The charity screening of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles at MechaCon in 2006, which benefited The Salvation Army’s Hurricane Katrina and Rita Recovery Effort was considered by most everyone around the world as a wonderful way to reveal the film to public audiences for the very first time. On behalf of the people of south Louisiana, we humbly thank Harmony Gold for this incredible opportunity and we thank everyone around the world for their continued thoughts and well-wishes. Last year’s MechaCon, much to our delight, was very successful as attendance grew to 150% of our 2005 attendance. We expect this trend to continue as we press forward in forging the best anime convention experience Louisiana has to offer. In this, we realize there were some “crowding” issues at points during the convention weekend. As such, we explored the possibility of moving to a larger facility, but with our attendance still below the 2,000 attendee mark, this option was too cost-prohibitive. However, here at our 2007 convention, we’re estimating that the number of convention attendees will reach a level that will allow us to move the convention to a larger facility in 2008. In the meantime, we ask that you’ll pardon the crowded hallways and events at this year’s MechaCon and we thank you for bearing with our “growing pains”. We carefully reviewed MechaCon 2006’s operations and have optimized our space use, as well as the functionality of many of our departments this year to better facilitate the larger crowds and to hopefully keep things moving along in a manner that will be comfortable for all of our attendees. This is a constantly evolving process as we continue to learn from our own hits and misses as well as those of other events. We thank all of our returning attendees for their continued faith in us and our ability to provide an enjoyable anime convention experience. We also welcome all our new attendees with open arms and hope you will enjoy all the hospitality south Louisiana and Cajun country is so well known for. Please enjoy our newly optimized MechaCon 3.0!

Organizer’s Plea

Footnotes

Please be on your best behavior and respect hotel property. We ask that you treat the Hilton as your home away from home. If you deface hotel property in any way, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Attendees of some other Anime Conventions in the past have been less than respectful to the convention facilities and hotel, and this type of behavior has given Anime Conventions a bad name. Please do your part to help change that stigma and show that anime conventions can be classy, too. The continued success of this convention is crucial to whether or not there will be future MechaCons. We sincerely appreciate you doing your part to help ensure that the hotel, convention facilities and your fellow attendees are treated with the utmost respect!

Irrashaimassen!

The Ouran High School Host Club would like to extend our finest welcome to MechaCon 3.0 attendees and ask that you join us as we open our doors to you for an extravagant Host Club event at the Hilton Lafayette. Let us engage your time with music, games, refreshments, surprises, and the company of seven lovable hosts: Tamaki, Kyouya, Haruhi, Hunny and Mori, and the unscrupulous twins, Hikaru and Kaoru. Sign-up for your spot at the Ouran Host Club table near registration before this event, which takes place on Saturday, August 4th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for this event is $6 and is not included as part of attendee registrations.

Returns to MechaCon! With MechaCon being a stop on the Robotech Convention Tour 2007, ROBOTECH fans will be treated to the latest news, industry info, and goodies from Harmony Gold. As a part of this tour, MechaCon is privileged to welcome back Operations Coordinator Kevin McKeever to our event as an honored Industry Guest.

Musical Guest Lisa Furukawa

In 2006, Ms. Furukawa entertained guests and attendees, as well as the ConsulGeneral of Japan and his Vice-Consul at the MechaCon Opening Ceremonies & Formal/Semi-formal Dinner. Now, Lisa joins us for a return performance at MechaCon 3.0... in a Saturday night performance open to ALL attendees! Lisa is a Japanese-American pianist, singer, and songwriter. Utilizing her talents in contemporary and classical music, Lisa’s performances and recordings display a fusion of Japanese folk, alternative pop, and electronica. Lisa has three CDs of original songs published through her Yume label. Her first recording, “This Moment is the Show,” is an intimate CD of solo piano and vocal arrangements. Her second CD, “Pearl Diver,” is a collaborative piece that originated from Lisa’s piano and vocal compositions, but was realized and recorded with cellist, Deborah Shields and percussionist, John Metcalf. Her third CD, “Reaching the Dragon,” was released in May of 2006. Industry Support MechaCon extends its heartfelt thanks to the following donors of prizes, charity items and general swag for our event. It is with the support of these companies that we are able to continue providing you, the attendees, with such a great annual event!

Charity Auction At MechaCon in both 2005 and 2006, we were very proud to have held charity auctions to benefit Faith House, a shelter for abused women and children here in Lafayette, LA. The strong show of support at these auctions really helped to show the anime community’s spirit of caring and concern toward those whose lives have been torn apart by domestic violence. Considering the nature of the service Faith House provides, we feel it is our duty as decent human beings to help them out as much as we possibly can. This is why we need the continued support of the anime community and industry… we simply cannot do it alone. MechaCon is honored to proclaim, since its inception, that the anime community and industry has been dedicated to helping the abused women and children in our community. This auction is our way of showing how much we care… how much the anime fans of tomorrow mean to us. We’d like to thank each and every person who braved the oncoming Hurricane Katrina to join us in 2005, as well as those who joined us in 2006. With your support, we raised $1,579.00 for Faith House at our 2005 auction and exceeded that initial sum by raising $2,590.00 in 2006! This year, we are proud to continue this tradition of helping those in need. Please join us at the MechaCon 3.0 Charity Auction and bid frequently and generously. Once again, we’ve gathered a variety of unique and hard-to-find items for this event... some of which you will never find anywhere else... especially if you are a die-hard fan of Transformers. Our sincerest thanks go to the Grand Theatre 16 for their incredibly generous donation to our auction and for their support of Faith House. Central Park Media, ADV Films, FUNimation, Anime Network and Dark Horse Comics continue to show their support with items that are sure to appeal to even the most casual of anime fans, and plushie fans won’t want to miss Brickhead Studios’ contribution of a homemade Domo-kun plushie! With all this, as well as as-yet-unannounced items, courtesy of some of our dealers, it’s easy to see why this auction is a can’t-miss event!

Plus we will be having a demo of the new Bleach TCG, and a special demo of the Full Metal Alchemist CCG. Come learn a new game and compete with your fellow con-goers for prizes and glory.

Role-playing Games

Aside from the RPG games being run by Jonathan Thompson, the following role-playing games are also available to convention attendees:

Legend of the Five Rings CITY OF LIES: THE OPIUM WAR

Cut Like a Soul Reaper-Eat Like a Hollow! Take on the Afterlife one Soul at a Time! The Bleach Trading Card Game lets you fight as your favorite Bleach character against the forces of worthy opponents. Will Ichigo defeat Menos Grande, or will he get blasted into pieces?

“The Opium War” is a classic adventure, set in the fantasy Oriental world of Rokugan. Here, honor is stronger than steel, and the games of noble -- and not-so-noble -- samurai decide the fate of all. Players in this game will take on the roles of young magistrates, samurai who have dedicated their lives to upholding the law of the Emperor. Can they put a stop to the underworld war that threatens to tear the jewel of the Scorpion lands apart, or will the shadowy forces directing it cast the city into chaos? Be on your guard, for nothing is as it seems in the City of Lies...

Full Metal Alchemist

BESM D-20 (Big Eyes, Small Mouth)

Bleach

From Score Entertainment:

From Press Pass:

Now you can join with Edward and Alphonse Elric as they search for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone... or take the role of the villains that try to stop them! Build your team and match wits against other players to see who will seize the stone and the unlimited power it provides.

Magic - The Gathering From Wizards of the Coast:

The Magic: The Gathering game, created by Richard Garfield, established the Trading Card Game category in 1993. Today, it continues to offer a fan base of more than 6 million players the opportunity to play both socially and competitively through leagues, tournaments and in-store events. Players embrace the competition - based entertainment that puts them in strategic control of bad-ass creatures and spells. MTG is the world’s best trading card game, and we support it with our best efforts in sales, marketing and organized play.

Yu-Gi-Oh! From Upper Deck:

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, two players face off in an all-out battle, engaging in a Match consisting of three duels. The main battles are waged between incredible monsters split into an amazing 20 types, each with their own unique skills and fighting styles. In addition, players can use Spell, set traps, change the battlefield itself, and even fuse two monsters together to form a monster of immense power!

World of Warcraft From Upper Deck:

World of Warcraft is the most popular MMO in the world. We translated that universe to the card table, and we’re confident that hardcore MMO players and CCG veterans alike won’t be disappointed. We’ve done our best to stay true to the MMO in design, and in our CCG, players will find that Paladins are still hard to kill, while Shamans have powers relating to damage, healing, and Totems. Many aspects of the CCG’s strategy will be familiar to players of the MMO. Additionally, by playing the CCG, you can get exclusive items in the online game!

BESM D-20 returns to Mechacon! Come join Michael Lee as he runs a game of this anime-based RPG.

Midnight Madness in the Dungeon!!!!

Up late? Not too sure what to do? Then come down and join us for Mechacon’s first Mechacon’s Midnight Madness in the Dungeon!!!! Night 1: Table-Top Gaming Guest Jonathan Thompson runs a special surprise game to be revealed at the event. Night 2: GM David Giles runs a game of Junk, an RPG set on the world of Joisey, where warriors fight in beer powered Mechs called ‘Cans’ that are made from recycled metal, discarded wood, and just about anything else that can be salvaged. This year, come, sit back, relax and enjoy a not so serious role-playing game of mech combat.

Miniatures Games Star wars

From Wizards of the Coast:

The Star Wars Miniatures line features hundreds of readyto-play miniatures from the Star Wars universe. You’ll find heroes, villains, droids, creatures, and aliens of all descriptions. Now you can play out your favorite movie scenes, add the miniatures to your roleplaying sessions, or trade and collect the miniatures set by set.

Mechwarrior From WizKids:

MechWarrior: Age of Destruction takes place in the 32ndcentury, a world of strong factions and dynamic personalities with long-standing allegiances and short fuses! Conflict can break out at any time, and when your battleforce is filled with three-story-high robot vehicles called BattleMechs bristling with weaponry, combat is explosive and electrifying.

Warhammer 40K From Games Workshop:

The aim of every person who plays Warhammer 40,000 is to pit their force of miniatures against other players across wartorn futuristic battlefields. Win or lose, all battles are entertaining challenges in which you try to out-think and out-play your opponent, taking advantage of what good luck comes your way, but ultimately relying upon sound tactics to win the day.

Anime covers all sides of the entertainment audience, so the anime rating system was created. In a lot of ways, this is the most successful of all rating systems, as it not only gives a recommended age, but also lists the content in the film and parental guidance warning. TV-Y7: Ages 7 and up. TV-PG: Sometimes contains a little violence. 13+: Contains a little mild language and violence. TV-14: Used often in darker anime dealing with catastrophe and violence, as well as crime or murder. 15+: Comedy anime with this rating sometimes has excessive fan-service, which includes scantily clad beautiful women or men. 16+: This is the most common rating among mature anime. Harsh language is usually the reason. A few of these anime have nudity, perhaps mild fan-service, brief violence, and sometimes bloody endings.

ADV FILMS - Rated ‘TV-PG’

17+: This anime is the closest to adult. It has everything from violence to excessive nudity, but no sex.

ADV FILMS - Rated ‘TV-14’

TV-MA: Unlike 17+, this anime has sex, in the soft-core type, but generally it’s the excessive violence and language that gives the MA rating.

MechaCon Policies MechaCon’s Intent

The primary purpose of MechaCon is to provide a fun and safe experience for as wide range of attendees as possible. Our intention is to bring a balance of Japanese traditional and pop culture to Louisiana through Anime and Transformers appreciation. The ratings of programming available at the convention vary. Due to differences in international rating structures, some adult situations may occur in some titles. Whenever possible, we have indicated these shows on the programming schedule to aid in our patrons viewing choices, but parental guidance is ALWAYS recommended.

Hotel Staff and MechaCon

Please remember that you are a guest of the hotel, and that there are other guests utilizing the same facilities. Please remember to be courteous and do not disturb other guests with excessive noise levels. If the hotel staff requests that you quiet down or stop a certain behavior, please do so. If you do not, your badge will be confiscated. We are all here to have a good time, so by acting responsibly, we can continue to bring events such as an Anime convention to Lafayette.

Rules of Conduct

At the registration desk, attendees have access to the MechaCon Pocket Policies handbook which outlines MechaCon’s Rules of Conduct, Security Policy, Weapons Policy and other information attendees need to be familiar with while attending MechaCon. Please request this handbook and read it carefully immediately after receiving it. Once you have read it, please pass it on to your fellow attendees so we can all have a safe and enjoyable convention experience.

Hands-off Policy MechaCon has a strict hands-off policy regarding its mascots, staff and attendees. An extension of MechaCon’s Rules of Conduct, which can be found in the MechaCon Pocket Policies handbook, our hands-off policy basically means that no attendee is to make physical contact with any member of the MechaCon staff, Hilton staff or other convention attendees without first getting permission from the person you wish to make physical contact with. This includes, but is not limited to, unwarranted “glomping”, touching, embracing, or hanging-on.
