Editorial: Late again and even less paoes than last month... Support for the mag. is virtually ni1, apart.from kit reviews, most of the articles in the last four issues having come from a back-log of over two years d9o, and with the problems in getting it produced according to our very lirnited funds, it seems that the next issue may well be the last one....

The CAIIADAIR CL-138 SABRE 6.
No.2 Squadron
SAr{Ir flew the North American F86F Sabre during the Korean part of the United Nations force and this experience miy have been an influence in the decision to order the Sabre to replace the Vampires. However, it was the Canadian built variant that was oidered in :rg1i. Thirty-four aircraft were delivered and entered service in L956 with No.1 and No.2-squadrons at waterkloofrnear Pretoria. They carried, serials from fJO to 383. When No.2 Squadron re-equipped with the Mirage LLLCZ, its Sabre 6,s were transferred to No.1 Squadtonrwho later passed them on to No.85 eOvanced Flying School. The aircraft depicted in this drawing was at the time with No.I Squadron and was in fact the first aircraft to carry out a supersonic flight -in South Africa and is still in service today. The camouflage drawings depict this aircraft's scheme and hence slight differences may aPPear in the patterns on similar Sabt'esrbut not to any great extent.

Although not strictly a SAAF aircraft, several of these machines were used by the SAAF forerunner, the SA Aviation Corps, in the South West Africa campaign in L9L5. LOCKHEED C-13O8 HERCqT:Eq
In Lg62, the SfuUr bought seven Cf3OB Hercul,es from the USA" They have been in service continuously with No.28 Squadron and are serialled 4Ot to 4O7" They were delivered initially in overall rnetal finish with white-topped fuselage and light grey uppef wing surfaces, but are notr cantouflaged Ln the dark earth/d,ark green scheme used by Transport Command. pE HAVTLLANp*p]{114 HERON yh..Z Two Heron series 2 aircraft were by No,28 Squadron from L955 until 1962 when they were withdrawn from service and la.ter sold in the UK. Their colour scheme was overall aluminium with a white upper fuselage and fin. They were serialled 12O and 121 and were initially delivered with the'springbokl
roundals, replaced by rcastlest later in their service life. HAWKER HIND
A large number of Hawker Hindsrconsisting of both bomber and trainer types were delivered to the SAAF in 1940 - L942 for training duties. They carried serials from 1O1 to L99, and from 3OO1 to approx 3O3O, LOCKHPP! HUpSg\"
Two Hudson aircraft, RAF serials P5I63 and PJlf{, were acquired by the SAAF in April L94A for coastal operations and were used by No.32 Coastal Flight at Cape Town. They were then allotted SAAF seriaLs 1351_ and 135e. They are reported to.have been unarmed and do not appear to have turrets from photes. In early L94L they wete handed over to the RAF at Khartoum in exchangL for fi.ve Anson aircraf t. HAT^II(ER HURRICA}{E
different marks of Hurricanes have at times served with SAAF units. Mk.1. Early in Lg3g the S&Ur received six Hurricane Mk.l serialled from 27t to 276" These had two-bladed wooden airscrews. In May 1940, four of these machinesrtogether with six Furies were sent to East Africa with No.2 F1ight of No.1 Sqdlrwhich-was later renumbered as No.2 Sqdn. A further nine were delivered to South Africa, mainly with the three-ntaOeO airscrew and carried the serials from 277 to 285 Meanwhile, the Hurricanes in East Africa had been transferred to No.1 Sq at Khartoum and No.J Sqdn with the new Hurricanes left for East Africa in October L94O" Futther Hurricane Mknlts were diverted to the'SAAF in East Africa fram those being ferried abross the continent from Takoradi to Egypt some of these being allotted SAAF serials up to 299, the others retainingtheir RAF serials. In April L94L, No 1 Sq took its Mk,lts up to EEypt wheie it flew them until September. No.3 Sq also flew Mk.lts at Aden from January to April 1943, whilst No"(o sq flew fhem in the Desert from March to August Lghz-. Mk"11" Many of the SAAF units flew Hurricane Mk.11's during the Desert war, No.1 Sq re-equipped with Mk"llBfs in September 1941n these being replaced by Mk.llDrs in September.Lg42 which the unit flew until re-equipped with Spitfires in November T942. When No.3 Sq left Aden for Egypt -in April 1943 it also went over to flying the IlC .version until receiving Spitfires in February L944. No,7 Sq flew t{urricane 118's from May L94z to 4pril 1943, when it changed over to Mk.llDtsrwhich it flew for the next four months also converting to Spitfires" The two Tac/Rec units also flew Hurricanes in North Africa. re-equipped with the Mk"11 in August L942 and flew them until February L943, and No"{1 Sqdn received its first Hurricane 11B's in East Africa in October f9+?, taking them later to Egypt before re-equipping with Spitfires in Feb L944

In order to give more experience to pilots at O(lUts in South Africa, L54 Hurricane Mk"11B/Cts were transferred from RAF storage at Casablanca, tfre first 211 were flown down whilst the remainder were strippeO. These were to carry serials from 52or to 5354 and were used.mainly by No"rl oru, With the exception of the few Ml{.1ts used in East Africa, all Hurricanes used by the SAAF in North Africa etc were supplied by the RAF and carried RAF serials. x i(

S.A.A.P". Fig4ter Can-r.ollflage: How to miT t]re colours..
by- Keq Smy"
The S.A.A.F. Mirage 111 and Mirage Fl and. some of the Impala Mk.ll are camouflaoed in the standard scheme of deep buff(BS 360) and olive drab(85298) on the upper surfaces with light admiralty grey(B,5697) underneath to a matt acrylic finish. The deep buff and.the light admiralty grey are not available as a ready mixed paint and this has cauSed loca1 modellers when trying to mix their own colours some problems. But now we have the answer. A letter to HUMBROL Ltd on this matter brought
the following reply using their standard range of colours.

Kit Reviews : Hurricane
Mk
by Arthur Cruickshank.
"LLb,/c.
Part of the IPMS project for the fortheoning Hobbies Fair, which r;vill be a representation of part of No"7 ALr DepotrPort Elizabeth in L944, includes models of two Hurricane Mk.Ilc and a single Mk. 1lb "
ln.L/JZna scale, the three main choices of Hurrieane kits are the AIRFIX, MATCHBOX and HbLLnR offeringsrwith FROGINOVA as a reserve, One can forget tft" FROG/NOVA and AIRFIX kits of whatever vintageras there are so many inconsistances in them that the work involved to get them up to scratch is excessive. A11 the kits mentioned are of the Mk".llc versionrmbre or less'riwith options available in terms of decals and extra fittings, such as bombsrrockets and carburettor intakes" To cut a long story short, the r'ecently released HELLER kit is probably the best, but does not warrant the excessive praise lavished on it by the reviewso The rudder outline is suspect and there is only one landing light"The aerial mast is moulded integrally with one half of the fuselages ?S is the aerial anchor on the rudder. During detailing rubbing downrthese do not survive and are best excised at the start of operationsr dS the tail wheel should be" Generally speaking, the major parts do not go together with any precision and the assembly of the basic model (fuselagerwings ) needs more than a 1itt1e attention. Howeverrwhere the reviews are correct is in the outline accuracy of the components and the excellent surface detail incorporated in the moulding" In that respectethis kit is going to last a long time amongst the better kits for the discerning modelIer. Also at last, wâ‚Ź have a Hurricane kit with the tropical air intake and the correct broader bladed propellor for a Mk"1l. There is a good basic cockpit wj-th a decent seat, control columnrinstrument panel(engraved) and gunsight, and decals are supplied for either a MK'"1lC (Trop) of the R,Indian AF or a similar version in the RAF European finish. The main failing with the other kits is their very suspect fuselage outlinesrwhich seems always very close to the Mk,1 length, and with the MATCHBOX kit, too shallow a cockpit canopy" This question of outline accuracy is a very difficult one to adjudicate, for although the basic information is available from many =ou=q"-=, no two of the several that I possess seem to agree. There is a very good drawing in the tAeromodeller I for Jan 1960, but the wing panel detail for the machine gun armed variant is positioned ioo far outboard. The rModel Aircraft' drawings (tvlar 1963) deal only with the MK.l and the early Sea Hurricanerbut seem to be faitly accurate, whilstthe Hurricane monograph in the Macdonald series provides some odd scale drawings these dealing with alternate top and lower surfacess so that there is a lower surface view of a Mk,Ilb when I wanted details of the aforementioned mactSine gun access panels" Therefore, before groarting and uttering that time honoured phrase'back to the drawing board'rI iried the AIRFIX guide to their L/z4tn scale Hurricane and there in the back was all that is needed, even if three times linear scal_e for t/7Zna" Returning to the 7 gO project, I discarded the FROG kit as being too inaccurate and tried to get along with the MATCHBOX version. This I also discarded for having inaccurate fuseJ-age length and cockpit profilerand I eventually settled for the HELLER kit The MATCHBOX kit seems to be making up into a reasonable Mk"1, so I shall" now finish it as the very first one flown in South*Africar dS L1-7LO, illustrated in tA Gathering of Eaglesf'rthe main changes being the elimination of the cannons-and the details on the upper wing surfacesrthe rescribing of the panels and the addition of a second tanOing light " The Mk"l1cfs flown by the SAAF in training roles at tl OTU have some very interesting colour schemes, but are otherwile perfectly standard and need only assembling(carefully) straight out of thr box. The Mk,,llb is also to be finj.shed in a novel manner, dirk earth overall on top surfaces with blue underneath and wittr'standard roundals""It requires that the canno-ns and_ their panelsrbe removed and filled before adding the details of the twelve rqachine guns'that this version sported. page
7
Perhaps someone will write up an account of all the SAAF Training Command colour schemes sometime, and thpse intending to build a model may be reminded that there is a Mk"ltc(Tr:op) in the Museum of Military History in Johannesburg for those who want a source of genuine detail, albeit without a radiator ^"1*Y11.?*'*1'*xx??,*lo*l*1)ip*?*{-?"X*i1-=**xi-*?*xp*p;3*l*wins surfaces " HELLER

North American T-6G"
by Dave Becker.
For some time now, the AIRFIX Harvard has been unavailable and the only kit of^this typ"e available in t/7Zna scale has been the HAhIK T-6G/SNJ. The new T-6G from FIELLER is therefore most welcome and is probably the most accurate kj,t produced'to date. UnfortunatelV, most of the plnel detail is of the raised line variety whichron close inspection, does not look like the real thing., Panelling is generally accuraterbut the baggage compartment door on the rear fuselage has also been repeated on both sides of the fuselage, whereas it should only appear on the port side of the fuselage. The most serious errotr appears to be the wingtips which are too thin and are flat on the undersides. They should in fact, be concave on the underside of'th€ tip with a slight washout on the leading edge" The spinner is slightly too poj-nted but fortunately a separate spinner is given making it easy to model ,the T-6 variants without spinners, The instrument panels do not look like the originals and are best replaced The undercarriage is however finely and delicately moulded but strangely, no undercarriage doors are provided. Decals for a French Air Force and Gabon Air Force aircraft are enclosed, but no doubt many South African modellers will wish to build A SAAF aircraft'" Therefore the underwing attachmeht points should be carefully sanded away and the selection of underwing armament and stores discarded as they a,re not applicable to SAAF aircraft. SAAF T-6G's did carry loop aerials and spinners at one stage, but these are no longer fitted. With the addition of extra window framingrSAAF type underwing armament, wing machine guns and a cowling, SAAF Harvard Mklla and Mklllrs may also be built from this 'humpedf kit also remembering to make s1ight cockpit interior modifications. Canadian-built Harvard Mkllb and lVts have a different rear cockpit and this would need some major surgery in this area to modify this kit. These variants also have a longer exhaust pipe. In-generalrthis kit is a good one if somewhat expensiverthe only fault difficult to correct being the wingtip error mentioned. )c
