HANOVER CHRISTMAS MOTHER
Expenses didn’t beat donations
For the first time in four years, expenses for the Hanover Christmas Mother program did not exceed donations. According to Ron Reed, treasurer of the Doswell Ruritan Club, which spearheads the annual fundraising project, $77,000 was spent in 2011 in helping 865 families. Of those served, 93 were seniors and 1,773 were children.
Reed said the total marks an increase of 82 families and 134 children. Services include toys, clothing gift cards from Peebles, food gift cards from Martin’s, and boxes of canned food. Reed also said that the largest donation of $13,420 came from Martin’s, with about half of that coming from the grocery store chain’s Share-a-Holiday Meal program.
Lizzie Powell: life after cancer By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com
T
he name Lizzie Powell evokes memories of an outstanding track star at Patrick Henry High School, but, more important in her young life, she is known as a cancer survivor. A sophomore at Virginia Tech, she broke all of Virginia’s pole vaulting records while a junior and senior at the Ashland school. She is remembered for the Saturday morning when she cleared 13 feet at Lee-Davis High
School. Although her emotions show at times, Lizzie doesn’t hesitate to talk about her battle with cancer. She talks one-on-one with friends and people about what she went through and also has spoken publically. She gave a memorable presentation to a Hanover County teachers’ group before the start of her senior year at Patrick Henry while she was still in treatment. “She talked about problems she had, as well as problems

Mechanicsville native killed in holiday shooting By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Shirley Patterson cancelled Christmas this year. On Christmas Eve, Robin Sheryl Clapp, her only daughter and a Mechanicsville native, was one of two people murdered in an apparent robbery attempt at a house in the 800 block of North 35th Street in Richmond. Just 10 days earlier, Clapp’s father, Donald Stevens, died after having been hospitalized in Newport News for emphysema. “I told my son [Jayson Stevens] to just come pick up his presents — that we weren’t having Christmas this year,” an emotional Patterson, a Mechanicsville resident, said during a telephone conversation on Thursday, Dec. 29. “Robin was a homemaker and didn’t work. She had a 17year-old son and now we’ve got to start thinking about him.” The other victim was Edward Lee Bowmer Jr., who lived in the house. Bowmer, 60, and Clapp, who would have been 56 in January, were friends, and she was
visiting when they were killed. She was a resident of Varina. On Dec. 26, police arrested Jamal Louis Clemons, 27, after several tips led them to an apartment in Whitcomb Court. A SWAT team entered an apartment and arrested Clemons without incident. He was convicted in June in Hanover County Circuit Court on a probation violation and was sentenced to nine years and eight months with nine years suspended. He was released on Dec. 23 from the Pamunkey Regional Jail. When Clemons fled the crime scene, he took a sports utility vehicle parked outside the home with the engine running. In the back seat was 2-year-old Kaiden Burnside. The SUV was abandoned in a cemetery about a mile from the crime scene, and the boy was found unharmed in the vehicle hours later. Police will seek indictments against Clemons in the shooting deaths of Clapp and Bowmer. Clemons was arraigned by videoconference

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Election 2012: Will it ever end?
Raise your hand if you’re already tired of the bickering and mudslinging heading into the presidential election. As a news junkie, being tuned in to newspapers, magazines, television, radio (you get the idea — all forms of media) is a normal part of this writer’s daily life. Lately, though, as soon as a candidate’s name is mentioned, the cringing begins. Some of the accusations and petty “dirt” that have been unearthed border on the ridiculous. What about the future of our country? How about that, folks? Anybody got some ideas on how to get us out of debt, the unemployed back to work, spurring jobs? You know, returning us to the great nation we know we are. Rather than digging every skeleton out of the closet (and who doesn’t have moments you’d rather forget?!), the emphasis really should be on getting back to business — literally. Who has a plan? What is it? Will it work? There are certainly lots of questions that demand answers, but some of the tactics being used by candidates stray from what is important — and that is our nation’s future. To say this is a critical election year is an understatement. Who brings the qualifications and solutions to the position of leader of the free world? Yes, we have much to consider in the coming months. Our voice must be heard — and the only way to do so is by taking the time to vote. We’ve just welcomed 2012 and here’s one voter who is ready for November to come and go. Well, at least election day.
Etc. ☞ Ah, January. When the month arrives, we know it’s time to turn our attention to government budgets. You can count on The Local to keep you informed as the Board of Supervisors and School Board crunch the numbers this budget season. Melody Kinser

LETTERS | Reader Views
Responding to Tech incident This letter is in response to the letter titled “What Tech needs to do” from Joseph Pierro of Mechanicsville. I see that Mr. Pierro formulated his misinformed opinion from the Richmond Times Dispatch article that once again tried to lay blame for the actions of one disturbed individual on the entire university. Rather than researching the facts of his letter, he instead used these misguided facts and an obvious disdain for an entire university as the basis for his letter. Had he done some research, he may have realized what the Richmond Times Dispatch failed to mention, that the car in question was located at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute which is 2.5 miles from the site of the shooting as the crow flies and nearly four miles by vehicle. It is not a part of campus, and is separated from campus by quite a distance. Situations such as these unfortunately cannot be prevented. There are bad people in this world, and those bad people sometimes do bad things. Even more unfortunately, these bad things sometimes
happen to exceptional people. Deriek Crouse was not only a Virginia Tech police officer, but a veteran of our Armed Forces. He was a father of five and was undoubtedly a member of the Hokie Family. A family that within hours of his death saw some of its youngest members (current students) start a fund for his family that as of the writing of this letter has raised more than $117,000. I have never been a law enforcement officer, an Army see LETTERS, pg. 13

students with special physical and medical needs have,” former Patriots activities director Dennis Minton said. “When she finished, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. She received a standing ovation.” Lizzie’s illness was discovered on her 17th birthday, just a few days after winning the state outdoor championship. She was diagnosed as having a lymphatic form of cancer. There would be surgery a couple of days later and a summer filled with treatments. Six months later, her doctors declared she was cancer-free and allowed her to return to training and competition. Lizzie came back with a vengeance, winning the state indoor and outdoor championships and signing with Virginia Tech. “I had one plan, one goal when I went to Virginia Tech last year and that was to major in pole vaulting,” Lizzie said from her family home as her mother Pat listened. “I wanted to go there and get better so I could compete in the 2012 Olympic trials. I realize now that it’s not going to happen, so I’m aiming for the 2016 trials.” When she got to Blacksburg, she was homesick and still suffering from problems caused by the cancer treatments. “She went from being almost a straight A student to a 2.2 (C’s) grade point average and that’s like failing for her,” Pat said. “Once we identified her problems, the school worked with her. She was able to get textbooks on disc to listen to as opposed to having to read everything and she would get extra time to finish tests and exams. She finished the second semester with a 3.79 GPA (grade point average).” Injuries slowed Lizzie down her freshman year. She also was adjusting to changes her new coach, Bob Phillips, wanted her to make. She now says she is comfortable with the changes. Unfortunately, more injuries
have slowed her down again. “I have a right forearm injury and hamstring problem bothering me,” Lizzie said. “I’m supposed to be out four weeks and that is up. I know I’ll miss our team’s first meet, but I hope to be ready to compete by the time the outdoor season starts.” She has grown and matured since starting college. “I’m comfortable at school now and have a lot of friends and support on and off the track team,” she said. “I intend to continue to work as hard as I can to reach the goal I have for competing in the Olympics, but I also realize that you don’t always get what you want. When I went to college it was to pole vault, pole vault, pole vault. Now I have a Plan B and am planning to major in either occupational or physical therapy.” In many ways it was the strengthening of her faith during her cancer treatments that has continued to be a source of strength and comfort for her. “One day after being diagnosed, I was in Starbucks and a friend’s minister came up and started talking to me,” Lizzie said. “He had heard about my cancer and we talked. He prayed for me and invited me to come attend his church. I’m a Christian and my faith has just gotten stronger through all of this.” At Virginia Tech, she is the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “Some of my friends that are FCA members know my story, but I haven’t told it to the entire group yet,” she said. “I’m sure someday I will.” It’s been almost two and a half years since Lizzie found out she had cancer. She still sees doctors periodically for tests and remains cancer-free. Lizzie is a fierce competitor, and, as the old saying goes, “If the good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise,” she has the determination and ability to realize her dream of competing in the pole vault in the United States track and field trials for a spot on the 2016 women’s Olympic team.

Garden club brings smiles to recipients of Meals of Wheels Photo submitted by Fonna Hohman
On Sunday, Dec. 11, the Hanover Towne Garden Club gathered to create floral arrangements for 60 Meals on Wheels recipients in Highland Springs and Ashland. Members utilized evergreen cuttings from their own gardens, along with purchased flowers and embellishments to craft lovely, miniature floral arrangements that were then delivered by Meals on Wheels volunteers with the meals. This project, begun by Hanover Towne Garden Club in 2006, has since caught on with other Richmond area garden clubs. For some recipients, these festive floral arrangements are the first flower arrangements they have ever received. The workshop has become a holiday tradition for many of the Hanover Towne members who enjoy sharing their love of flowers and gardening to brighten up homes of elderly in their community. The Hanover Towne Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at the Hew Hanover Presbyterian Church on U.S. 301. Guests are always welcome.

veteran or a leader of a university. I trust that any of those groups of people do everything that they can every day in order to protect you and me from many more bad people and bad things than we would ever want to know about. As for “What Tech needs to do,” we Hokies will continue to take care of our family. We also will welcome new friends and family as we always do. If Mr. Pierro finds himself in Blacksburg on any weekend in the fall when we all get together as a family, he is welcome at my tailgate. Michael Woods Mechanicsville
How can school be responsible? In response to the letter written by Joseph Pierro of Mechanicsville, “What Tech Needs to do” – Dec. 21, 2011. I am thoroughly amazed that in this day and age anyone can hold a school responsible for random acts of violence. Sure, each university needs to have a plan to deal with known disturbances or identified threats, but no school in the world can prepare itself for
the kind of crazy acts by individuals that we have seen all too recently. It is obvious that Mr. Pierro has never travelled to Blacksburg and does not have the foggiest idea of how large and open Virginia Tech is. In size it dwarfs Mechanicsville. If we all followed Pierro’s logic, Lee-Davis [High School] would have been locked down when a student was shot a few days ago, another crazy walking the streets. If every time a pickup truck rolled down U.S. 360 or U.S. 301 during the daytime with a shotgun hanging in the back window, then Hanover County would be forced to shut the schools every day. Blacksburg is a city, not just a campus. UVa is housed in a city, Charlottesville. How many
shootings occur there every week? Now close to home, our own VCU campus is located in the heart of a battleground. Do we close school every day because someone is known to be carrying a gun? No, we teach our students to be vigilant and watch out for one another. My daughter went to Virginia Tech, another went to UVa and I have a daughter that is attending VCU. I am fully confident that our universities and their security are doing all they can to protect our kids. If Mr. Pierro thinks for one minute that President Steger is more concerned with Sugar Bowl profits than our children, then he is sadly under a strange misguided delusion. Holmes and Cole take on case of the 7-footer King William and Hanover products help R-MC shut down pro prospect
www.mechlocal.com See slideshow online!
By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com There are very few 7-footers on the rosters of Division III basketball teams and even fewer that show the potential to play professionally. In the championship game of the R-MC Coaches Classic, the host Yellow Jackets faced both in the presence of Farmingdale State junior forward AJ Matthews. Matthews came into the contest averaging 23 points and 14.5 rebounds per game and with his Chris Boshlike build he had the talent to dominate any contest. “The Matthews kid is an All-American quality player,” said R-MC head coach Nathan Davis. “He’s a potential pro. He’s a nightmare matchup.” But Randolph-Macon’s defense, playing no one over 6-7, stepped up to neutralize Matthews in the second half and allow the Yellow Jackets to claim the championship 83-75. “I thought that you’ve got to give our guys a lot of credit for executing our game plan to the best of their abilities and making it tough for (Matthews) to get points,” Davis said. Two of those 6-7 players making it tough on Matthews were local products Dylan Cole, a junior out of Hanover and Akeem Holmes, a freshman from King William. Though he started the sea-

son opener, Cole’s production has increased of late as his tendency of foul has fallen off. “I feel like since I’ve stopped fouling, playing more and being in the game more has really done more for me,” Cole said. In R-MC’s 84-75 tournament opening victory over Baruch, Cole scored a career high 10 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Against the much taller Matthews, Cole’s production did not show up on the stat sheet but he played a vital role on defense. For Davis, Cole’s improvement has given the Yellow Jackets a boost. “The big thing for us and the reason we’ve looked better over the last two

days is because it’s two days where he didn’t get into foul trouble,” Davis said. “He’s an inside presence. He’s a junior so he’s strong. He’s been around for two years so he understands what we’re trying to do and when he’s able to play it makes us a better team.” But even the improved Cole was no match for Matthews early as the 7-footer appeared to be on pace to score 40 while fouling out the entire Yellow Jacket roster. Cole picked up two quick fouls Matthews notched 13 points in the first seven minutes of play. “That’s what it was looking like for a little while but we did a good job of adjusting,” Davis
said. “We ended up switching up and throwing some matchup at him because it seemed like when teams played zone they quit throwing it to him as much.” When sophomore forward Andre Simon joined Cole on the bench with two fouls, the task of stopping Matthews fell to Holmes, who had seen little playing time coming into the tournament. “Once I see the guys in front of me getting into foul trouble I automatically know I’ve got to step up because that means I’m coming in,” Holmes said. “I really didn’t want them to get into foul trouble because I felt nervous the whole time but I was fine

after that. My team trusted me, I trusted them as well.” Holmes’ big-body presence began to neutralize Matthews’ effectiveness and limited him to three points over the final 13 minutes of the half. “He’s been playing really well in practice,” Cole said of Holmes. “He’s been coming along, just making progress every day.” Behind Matthews, the Rams ran out to an early 9-2 lead but R-MC answered with a 15-4 run of their own to take a 17-13 lead. A 7-0 run by Farmingdale
gave the Rams a 20-17 lead but R-MC once again knotted the game at 24 on a pair of free throw from freshman Marcus Badger (11 points). The Rams then pulled out to their biggest lead of the game, 35-26, when Croskey fouled Dyshaun Flournoy (21 points) on a made 3-pointer with less than three minutes left in the half. Though the Yellow Jackets executed their offense well their shots simply would not fall from outside. R-MC finished 1-for-10 see COLE, pg. 27 `
Hawks hold their own against state’s best By Dave Lawrence For The Mechanicsville Local Hanover invited some of the top teams in the state to its Hawks Duals wrestling tournament Friday. Sixteen teams, representing all four VHSL Group AAA regions, one Group AA team, one Group A team, and one private school came to Mechanicville to grapple with the question, “Who’s best?” The host Hawks found out they were one of the best, but in the end lost to Ocean Lakes High School of Virginia Beach in the tournament title match. “That was a good showing for our guys against the competition that was here,” said Hanover head coach Aaron Bradley. “To go 4-1, we can definitely take some positives from that.” In addition to Hanover and Ocean Lakes, AAA competition included Hanover’s Capital District rival Lee-Davis; local teams Deep Run, Hermitage, J.R. Tucker, James River and Midlothian; Hickory of Chesapeake; James Madison of Vienna, Mountain View of Centreville; North Stafford; and Salem of Virginia Beach. Louisa represented Group AA. Northumberland represented Group A. Benedictine was the only private school competing. Chris Barnhart, coach of the winning Ocean Lakes team, enjoyed the challenge. “There’s 16 good teams here. Each team has four or five tough guys,” Barnhart said. “It’s good for regional and state experience. That’s what you want afterwards. We’ve got a month left in the season and we want to get kids as far as we can in the state tournament.” In all, the schools offered 21 of the top-ranked wrestlers in the state, according to the Web site VirginiaWrestling.com. The title match between Hanover
and Ocean Lakes brought together two of the site’s top 10 teams: Ocean Lakes is ranked No. 2, while Hanover is No. 10. “This is why we came here,” Barnhart said. “It’s a well-balanced team. They’d be as good as us in the Beach. It would probably be a different result each time, the way his kids wrestle and our kids wrestle. … That’s what we wanted. Good competition. So it was nice to meet them in the finals instead of before that.” “They were just a little deeper than we were,” Bradley said of Ocean Lakes. “They brought a few more guys ready to go than we did for that match.” The teams battled through five matches over the course of the day. By the time the final round began, endurance played a big role in the outcome. “It’s tough. Five is the most you can have in a day,” Bradley
said. “When you get down to that fifth one, some of those matches are going to come down to conditioning – who’s been working hard over the holiday break and who’s been making sure they’re getting their workouts in.” Lee-Davis finished in eighth place. Confederates’ coach Josh Tyler had hoped for a better showing. “We definitely didn’t come out where we wanted to be,” Tyler said. “I thought we could have been a lot more competitive with teams in a lot of close matches.” Many of their losses were close decisions. “Individually, it would have really helped a lot when you’re losing several one-point matches, you’ve got to find a way to win those,” Tyler said. “That’s really what hurt us today. … Yeah, we were missing a few

half to pull R-MC within two, 36-34, at the break. “He did a good job offensively of understanding what was going on and got us moving,” Davis said. “When he got in there we went from down 10 to down two at the half, which I thought was very important.” The Rams quickly widened the margin to six points opening the second half. But as RMC began aggressively double and triple-teaming Matthews he became less effective and was limited to two points on 1-for-3 shooting over the final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Jackets’ shots started to fall from outside to go 6-of-12 from 3-point range in the second half. “If you’ve got good players and they understand what they’re doing and they’re taking the right shots they will go in eventually,” Davis said. “You’ve just got to stick with it.” On a drive to the basket,

on threes in the half. “It gets real frustrating because you feel like you’re working really hard on offense, you’re going through rotations, you’re setting picks, you’re getting guys open and when the shot doesn’t fall automatically you get frustrated,” Holmes said. “But you just let that go out of your mind, go down and play defense and try to get another shot because at some point shots are going to fall. You don’t give up. You run down the court, get a stop and come back and try to do it all over again because they’re going to fall at some point.” Facing their biggest deficit and foul trouble across the board, Davis turned to little used freshman Evan Jackson. The forward out of Deep Run provided a spark scoring six points over the final 2:41 of the

guys, but so was every other team here. That’s not a real reason for losing.” In several of those close losses, the Confederates seemed to lack the killer instinct needed
to put away or overtake their opponent. “That’s something that we’re going to have to fix,” Tyler said. “In order for us to be successful, we’ve got to find a way to figure

At 6-5, Randolph-Macon’s Lamar Giggetts (31) found himself at a huge disadvantage trying to guard Farmingdale St.’s 7-0 forward AJ Matthews.
Simon dished off to Holmes for a thunderous dunk over Ibrahim Johnson to pull R-MC within two, 46-44. A layup from Trent Walker tied the game and backto-back threes from Croskey (16 points) and Connor Sullivan gave the Yellow Jackets a 52-46 lead with 12:48 to play and they
never trailed again. R-MC held a 71-63 lead with 6:05 to play when the Rams went on an 8-0 run to tie the contest with 2:53 remaining. But it was Cole who came to the rescue. Off a feed from Simon, Cole went strong to the basket to draw
that out – to dig deep when it’s one or two points and getting down to the wire. We’ve got to pull the trigger. We’re holding back and we’re not letting everything go like we need to.” the fourth foul on Matthews. Cole stroked both free throws to put the Yellow Jackets back on top to stay. Thirty seconds later Cole took a feed from Giggetts (12 points) for a layup and a 7571 lead with 1:28 remaining to help insure the win. Matthews finished the game with 18 points and 16 rebounds to earn the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player honors. Croskey and Adam Desgain (12 points) joined the Rams’ Josh Smith (21 points) and Flournoy on the All-Tournament team. R-MC returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 when they host Randolph College. The game will mark a family faceoff as Yellow Jacket senior Adam Desgain will go toe-totoe with his younger brother Zach Desgain, a freshman at Randolph. The contest will also mark the final trip to the Richmond area for Atlee product Cameron Colquitt who is a junior guard for the Wildcats.
