HANOVER CHRISTMAS MOTHER
Expenses didn’t beat donations
For the first time in four years, expenses for the Hanover Christmas Mother program did not exceed donations. According to Ron Reed, treasurer of the Doswell Ruritan Club, which spearheads the annual fundraising project, $77,000 was spent in 2011 in helping 865 families. Of those served, 93 were seniors and 1,773 were children.
Reed said the total marks an increase of 82 families and 134 children. Services include toys, clothing gift cards from Peebles, food gift cards from Martin’s, and boxes of canned food. Reed also said that the largest donation of $13,420 came from Martin’s, with about half of that coming from the grocery store chain’s Share-a-Holiday Meal program.
Lizzie Powell: life after cancer By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com
T
he name Lizzie Powell evokes memories of an outstanding track star at Patrick Henry High School, but, more important in her young life, she is known as a cancer survivor. A sophomore at Virginia Tech, she broke all of Virginia’s pole vaulting records while a junior and senior at the Ashland school. She is remembered for the Saturday morning when she cleared 13 feet at Lee-Davis High
School. Although her emotions show at times, Lizzie doesn’t hesitate to talk about her battle with cancer. She talks one-on-one with friends and people about what she went through and also has spoken publically. She gave a memorable presentation to a Hanover County teachers’ group before the start of her senior year at Patrick Henry while she was still in treatment. “She talked about problems she had, as well as problems
