Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Nicholas “Nick” Patrick Carter, 15, has attained the rank of Eagle Scout. A sophomore at Hanover High School, he is the son of Len and Patti Carter of Mechanicsville. Nick has been in scouting for nearly 10 years. His Eagle Scout project benefited the Richmond SPCA. He collected more than 1,100 towels and blankets for the SPCA. In addition to the mandatory 21 merit badge requirements, Nick attended and worked at many high-adventure camps, where he enjoyed rock climbing, high ropes, rafting, scuba diving, surfing and caving. Nick credits his parents and scout leaders David Brown, Keith Fields, Malcolm Dickerson and Gina Hundley, as well as many other scouting mentors. He especially thanks his dad who hiked, camped, crawled in caves, climbed mountains and donned scuba gear along with him. In addition to scouting, Nick plays basketball and

Prediction? ~ PAIN ~ By Pastor David Crisp, Senior Pastor

T

here is a great scene from the movie “Rocky III” that comes to mind just now. Rocky’s mega-muscled and mo-hawked opponent for the big fight, a character named “Clubber” played by the then unknown actor, “Mr. T,” was asked by a reporter, “What’s your prediction for tonight’s fight?” Clubber gives a scowl and snarls, “Prediction? Pain!” Last week I promised my predictions for 2010. I am, however, somewhat conflicted about that since I know that on the one hand, I want to give you my honest view, but on the other, the Bible tells us not to worry but instead to pray and focus on those things which are good, right, true, pure, lovely, excellent and praise-worthy. How can I do both things at once? Thankfully, Jesus gave me a pattern to follow. He told his followers the hard truths. Pulling no punches, He told them about drastic and painful things to come: his own crucifixion, earthquakes, famines, wars, and persecution. He also gave his disciples hope and specific directions on how to find and grasp that hope! So here goes…

I

n my humble, and very human opinion, here are some things that I think may happen in 2010: • The Iranian nuclear missile crisis will really become a crisis! Look for Israel to act and the world to react strongly against Israel in return. • The U.S. economy will continue to decline and there will be great internal division. Higher unemployment, higher taxes, higher anxiety. • Saudi Arabia, Russia, the E.U. and a Middle Eastern consortium will call for the U.S. dollar to be replaced as the world’s “reserve currency.” This will cause a sharp drop in the value of the dollar and further damage the already weak U.S. economy. • Saudi Arabia will be drawn into conflict with other Muslim nations. Look for tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran to increase significantly. Saudi Arabia may, in fact, be the woman of Rev. 17 who rides on the beast, (the religion of Islam). The beast eventually destroys her. (Rev.17:16) • Turkey will continue to rise in prominence and be looked to as the only nation who can bring peace and stability in the Middle East and the Muslim world. Look for a charismatic leader here. • Terrorism and violence will increase: more shoe-bombers and underwear-bombers and you-name-it-bombers. There will be repeats of the Ft. Hood Massacre in diverse locations perpetrated mainly by Islamic Jihadists, but also random violence from others also under Satan’s control. • Each night the news will feature the following names: Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and a host of others, Islamic nations all. • You will hear the word “global” a LOT. • Eastern peoples will turn to Islam. Western peoples will turn to alcohol, drugs, pornography and sex; they will turn away from God and His Word and they will turn against Christians and the name of Jesus. The media will continually ridicule Christ and His followers. • America will continue to drift into Socialism. Personal freedom and responsibility will be diminished, while the “collective good” as determined by Washington will be exalted. • Abortion and homosexuality will increase and find increased acceptance and “legal” protections. The traditional family will become an oddity.

H

ad enough yet? My prognostications for 2010 sound a lot like Clubber’s prediction: PAIN! But out of this pain, the true church will become purified, stronger and more passionate about Christ. Many will repent and turn to Jesus for salvation. We will learn to trust God above all things – that our only hope is Christ! Jesus said it this way: “I have told you these things so that you would not go astray” and “In me you may have peace” and that “your joy might be full!” So let’s “Fix our eyes on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, commit ourselves to our faithful Creator and continue to do good. “Prepare for action! Be self-controlled. Set your hope fully on the grace that will be given to us when Jesus is revealed!” (1Peter 1:13)

Wrong way driver causes fatal crash Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com A Norfolk man is dead following a two-vehicle crash that took place Wednesday night in Mechanicsville. According to Sgt. T.J. Molnar, public information officer of the Virginia State Police, Trooper T.M. Howard was called to the scene of a wrong way driver on Interstate 295 northbound, about ¼-mile south of Route

627, Pole Green Road, at 11:40 p.m. A 1999 Dodge Ram was traveling southbound on I-295 in the northbound lanes when it struck a 1992 Cadillac Deville head-on. The crash occurred in the two center lanes of I-295 northbound. The driver of the Cadillac, William E. Goode Jr., 51, died at the scene. His 9-year-old grand-

daughter was riding in the vehicle and sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing her safety belt. Goode’s granddaughter was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center. The investigation is ongoing whether Goode was wearing his safety belt. Nicholas R. Sickal, 19, of Barhamsville, the driver of the Dodge Ram, was injured in the crash and transported by ambu-

lance to VCU Medical Center. He sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. It is not known whether Sickal was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash. Molnar said charges are pending as a result of the crash. The Virginia State Police Division One Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation of the fatal crash.

Noise issue prompts limits on dog-rescue group By Katherine Calos Media General News Service The dogs at BARK will have to keep it down. In response to complaints by neighbors, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors voted on Wednesday, Dec. 9, to place strict limits on a one-year special-exception permit to allow the dog-rescue group to continue housing more than 50 dogs on its 70-plus acres. Supervisor Elton J. Wade Sr. dissented on a 6-1 vote. Conditions will allow no more than 125 dogs and a maximum noise level of 41 decibels at the borders of the property. All dogs will have to live in enclosed buildings to reduce the noise. No more than 15 dogs at a time will be allowed to be outside. Currently, 173 dogs are on the site, including 10 personal pets and 40 dogs that are

considered nonadoptable. Bob Tillack, who founded BARK to find homes for dogs that otherwise would be euthanized at local shelters, said he viewed the vote as “a good turn of events” even though it means he has to place more than 50 dogs in the next three months to get down to the 125-dog limit. So far this year, BARK has found homes for 700 dogs, he said. “We’re going to comply with whatever the county wants us to comply with,” he said. “We’ve been there for a long time. This is our seventh year.” Until the supervisors changed the rules last spring, BARK had been licensed to have as many as 200 animals on the property. Now, no more than 50 dogs can be held on any one property without a specialexception permit. Tillack has enclosed all of his

kennel areas except for a carport that holds six wolf-dog hybrids. Those animals prefer to be outside, so he’s looking for a place on a farm for them, he said. BARK doesn’t bring visitors to the kennels; it takes animals on Saturday mornings to meet visitors at PetSmart at Short Pump Town Center. On a tour of the property, visitors noticed dogs barking when someone new came into view. They also quieted down after a short time. An acoustical vinyl barrier recently added to the back of the kennel area seemed to help. A noise study in midNovember found acoustical readings as high as 46 decibels at the edge of the property when dogs were barking and the kennel doors were open. Supervisor John E. Gordon Jr., chairman of the board, said

he believes the conditions recommended by the county staff would reduce and potentially eliminate the impact of BARK on its neighbors. He noted that the supervisors had approved a noise level of 72 decibels at a gun range but were allowing only 41 decibels at BARK. Several neighbors objected to the exception. One even played a recording of the barking noise he could hear from his deck. The supervisors and planning officials said a specialexception permit was the best way to ensure compliance. “This gives us a vehicle,” Supervisor Robert R. Setliff said. “These are the conditions. Spend your money and we’ll look at it in a year. If it’s not working, we will have to shut him down or bring it to 49 dogs. Without conditions, that may be as bad as 125 dogs.”

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

It’s a new year and that means time for budgets And so it begins. Yes, it’s budget season, that time of the year when county and school administrators prepare to present numbers to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and Hanover County School Board. And a very important point is the fact that those proposals are offered to the public for input. Dr. Stewart D. Roberson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, will present his budget to the School Board on Tuesday, Jan. 12, marking the first step in a lengthy and involved process. While he is the primary in his leadership role, several members of his administrative staff are involved in crunching numbers. As was stated here a few weeks ago, there is no envy to what Roberson and County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. face at budget time — especially when the economy is in turmoil. When federal and/or state funds are reduced or eliminated, the decisions on where and what to cut no doubt become a heavy burden. And then there could be layoffs or job losses. While we sympathize with anyone faced with either possibility, the school system’s Reduction in Force (RIF) finds teachers unemployed. That move is doubly unfortunate: Someone is jobless and students lose too. No, there’s no inside information as to what will be brought before the School Board next week. County services and staff may be put on the chopping block this budget season. With the anticipation of funding cuts, Harris and constitutional officeholders must be prepared for worst-case scenarios in operating their offices effectively and sufficiently. Today, however, speculation is the best word to describe what’s ahead. We will learn on Tuesday what the upcoming budget means to our schools though. Stay tuned.

Hanover High’s yearbook, the 2009 Aerie, earned a Trophy Class rating at a recent Virginia High School League (VHSL) competition. This award is the highest recognition possible on the state level. While many of last year’s staff have graduated, the following students are still at HHS: Meredith Bond, Meghan Kalinowski, Jason Ryan, McKenzie Carroll, Jade Foster, Hope Bowen, Sarah Day, Jen Eubank, Carly Fowler, and Ryane Majewski. Our school newspaper, The Hawk Eye, was recognized with a 2nd place award in the VHSL championships. Ashley Ireland received a scholarship to help her attend this year’s Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association convention in Washington, D.C. Sam Westrick was selected as the tuba player for the Senior Regional orchestra. Sam was the only tuba player chosen from our region. Congratulations! Every nine weeks, the Hawks staff recommends two students from each grade who exemplify characteristics we hope all our students will display: kindness, cooperation, respect, school spirit, and thirst for learning. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected as SOARING HAWKS for the second nine weeks: 9th grade – Victoria Lasecki, Brad Kemp; 10th grade – Julia Dry, Dylan Thorne; 11th grade – Silvie Chang, Ryan Alkire; 12th grade – Samantha Stewart, and Douglas Peterson. The PTSA is pleased to announce the following winners of this year’s Reflections contest: Literature 1st place – Taylor Golding, 2nd place – Trey Cully, 3rd place – Laurajane Blaser; Photography 1st place – Rachel Pruett, 2nd place – Laurajane Blaser; Visual Arts 1st place – Josh Donohue. Bailey Lambert and Kyle Hammond, HHS FFA and floriculture students, recently attended the 2009 National Junior Horticulture Association convention. They came away as Nationals Winners for their demonstration, Salsa Fiesta, in the Use Division of the Horticulture Demonstration contest. In other news from the horticulture class, the following students participated in the local FFA Forestry Competition: Diana Damian, Allie Hopper, Bailey Lambert, and Dana Walsh.

Partnerships between area businesses and Hanover High are set up to enhance the educational experience of all students through greater exposure to the working community, establish a good working relationship between school and the workplace, and provide opportunities and resources to match the needs, interests, and resources of the schools and community. The following businesses have entered into a Partnership-inEducation agreement with Hanover High School: • 301 Auto • Ashcourt Cleaners • Chick-Fil-A, Virginia Center • Coca Cola Bottling • Julie Whitaker Insurance Agency • Noodles and Company • Resource Reality • Richmond Symphony • Tropical Smoothie • Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Agency The students and staff of Hanover High thank these businesses for their commitment to our school and community. Clarifying early days of nation Reading Ms. Lucord’s letter in the Dec. 30 edition of The Local made me shake my head. Not because of the issue with the cross. No, my problem is with Ms. Lucord’s misunderstanding of history, a trait she shares with many (most?) conservatives. Let’s be very clear here:

are five acres for agricultural, horticultural and open space and 20 acres for forest use. A one-acre house site is allowed in all categories. Requirements and values are established by the State Land Evaluation Advisory Council. If the land use is changed, the tax reduction must be repaid with simple

America was not founded a Christian nation! That’s not just my belief, that’s the verdict of history. The later 18th century was the time of the Industrial Revolution in Europe and the Enlightenment both there and here. The founding fathers were generally made up of wealthy landowners and professionals who were educated, traveled and well-read, especially the six main players in the writing of the Declaration and the Constitution (Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Madison and Hamilton) who

were strongly influenced by other Enlightenment philosophies. Their letters, pamphlets and other personal writings reveal that they had a lot of different ideas and beliefs. Some were more properly Deists rather than Christian. Did you know that Ben Franklin was an atheist? That Thomas Jefferson edited his own New Testament because he felt the Bible of the time (the same one you probably use today) was filled with hypocrisy and fantasy? That George Washington rewrote every presidential address written for him by others to remove any reference to Jesus? Read the Constitution and Bill of Rights! God is nowhere in it! In fact, religion of any type is mentioned in the Constitution exactly twice, only to ensure it would never be inflicted on government: “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States”, and the Establishment clause of the First Amendment. The brief references to “the Creator” and “Nature and Nature’s God” in the Declaration of Independence were carefully chosen to cover as many belief structures, both Christian and non-Christian, as possible. Nowhere in any of these critical documents was Jesus or any of the trappings of Christianity ever mentioned — which, it is well documented, was not by accident.

see ENROLLMENT, pg. 13 `

A reporter famously asked Hamilton why there was no mention of God in the document, to which he flippantly replied, “We forgot.” (Hamilton was well known for never forgetting anything.) The founding fathers were adamant that religion in all of its guises be kept entirely separate and apart from government. And before you ask about “In God We Trust” and “one nation, under God”: neither were done at the time of the founding fathers. The former was added to coinage right after the Civil War; the latter added to the Pledge during the McCarthy hysteria of the 1950s. There’s no need to take my word for it — there are plenty of excellent books and online information detailing the times of the founding of our country, including the collected writings and documents of the men who built the foundation our government. All one has to do is read! Oh, wait . . . that’s too much work! It’s sooo much easier to take one’s history from parents and preachers and pundits than from actual historians without a political or religious axe to grind, to rationalize away anything that conflicts with what one wants to believe, to build a philosophy to live by around misconceptions and outright lies rather than actually make sure one fully understands what they’re talking about. How sad! Steve Sneed Mechanicsville

The H1N1 strain of flu virus is responsible now for essentially all flu infections found in Virginia. With several months left in the typical flu season, vaccination remains the number one means of protection against this disease. Combining shopping with an H1N1 vaccination helps busy people find a convenient way to stay healthy. Laura Condyles, a senior ROTC student at William & Mary, drove an hour at the urging of her mother to get the vaccine. “People my age aren’t thinking much about

H1N1 but I’ve seen large numbers of absences in my ROTC workouts and classes and know that it’s just not worth taking the chance to get sick” she said. More than 3,000 physician offices, pharmacies, big box stores, clinics and health departments are registered in the state as H1N1 vaccinators. To find vaccination sites serving the public, use the Flu Vaccine Locator tool on the VDH Web site at www.vdh.virginia.gov. Information for the public is also available from the VDH Inquiry Center toll free weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1-877-ASK-VDH3.

Thomas Carson, right, receives a check for $4,055 from Brian Thompson, owner of IK Catering.

Dinner guests gave a $30 donation for dinner, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Carson to offset the costs of medical care. The night’s program included an educational talk from Tiffany Walker, who is with tthe LLS, and a video presentation of Carson thanking those who attended the

dinner. IK Catering and staff handled decorations, table set-up and menu preparation. The room was decorated with the colors of the LLS.The centerpiece of the room included a sparkling wooden sign that read “Believe in Miracles.” The Monday after the benefit dinner Carson and his

wife, along with many other family members, learned that tests showed cancer-free results. Carson is in remission and cancer-free. Despite the positive reports, Carson still needs support for medical costs. Donations can be made through IK Catering in care of Thomas Carson.

According to Darya, Frosty’s umbrella helped a little with rain too. “We had people come by and ask to get their picture taken with him,” she said. Frosty’s design included tree ornaments for eyes, apple bites for cheeks and a clementine nose.

Fundraising efforts have paid off significantly for the Mechanicsville project of Heart Havens. “We have raised on our own efforts about $180,000 over a five-year period. We’ve also gotten $60,000 in grants from two foundations, so we have $240,000 in our bank account now, which will be more than enough to build the home and I hope will be enough in there to furnish the home and make the downpayment on a van of some kind, Tate said. He is quick to acknowledge the county’s role in making the home a reality. Residents of Heart Havens facilities are provided with a home most don’t want to leave. Tate did say they must be 18 years or older and some residents are employed. Hanover County residents receive primary consideration

ago. He also said Heart Havens received the land at no cost from the county. The house will be built to occupy 2,824 square feet on what Tate said was a vacant lot the county “designated some years back for mental health purposes. Tate’s role in helping acquire the land for Heart Havens started during a conversation with Lori Ann Booker, who works with the CSB. She then arranged for Tate to talk with Wanda Martin, the CSB residential services manager, about the project. “And it just worked out over a period of about a year and a half, he said. Now that dirt has been moved in a ceremonial fashion, Heart Havens is getting to work on constructing the house. “We hope to be operational by summertime, Tate said. Among those participating in Sunday’s ground-breaking ceremony were Bishop Charlene Kammerer and Mark Ogren, the Ashland District superintendent of the Methodist Church. Looking back on how the dream of establishing a Heart Havens location in Hanover County became a reality, Tate said he made the suggestion in April 2004 during a meeting of the Methodist Men’s Group at Enon United Methodist Church. He said he told the group that “we needed to have a Heart Havens home in the Mechanicsville area. “Really, my initial idea was this was going to be piece of cake — all we needed was about $300,000; we actually needed more than that. He turned to the Methodist Churches in the Mechanicsville area – Shady Grove, Lebanon, Enon and New Son – for financial assistance. Also aiding the project have been members of Wright’s Chapel in Carmel Church, as have the Ashland District United Methodist Men. To raise money for Heart Havens, Enon has sponsored

steak dinners, golf tournaments, yard says, “anything that you can do to raise a few bucks. “The major thing that we latched onto where we got most of our help from Shady Grove and Lebanon, Tate said, is “a concession stand at the

Siegel Center at VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) and we get a commission on what we sell down there. He said the have probably netted $100,000 from selling hot dogs and popcorn over the course of five years.

when applying for occupancy, but, Tate said, if the Hanover CSB cannot provide qualified residents, “then we’re allowed to go outside Hanover County to get additional residents.” He also said the county has residents with needs that Heart Havens is not licensed to care for, including wheelchair-bound and behavioral problems. The need exists in Hanover County, Tate said, with 40 to 41 people having been identified as being in urgent need of this kind of care. Heart Havens provides a Christian atmosphere, with supervisors that spend time with them. Tate said they have “an action plan for each resident to get them to develop to the best that we can —something that’s meaningful for them.” For example, a resident in another location has the goal of writing his own checks. “Anything that we can individualize that makes life more meaningful for them.” The Union Baptist Church, Tate said, has already proven to be a good neighbor to Heart Havens. The minister, W. Darrell Leftwich, has expressed an interest in the project, which Heart Havens supports. “We encourage a relationship or we try to get a church to adopt the home — adopt in the sense that we will establish a working relationship, invite them to dinners, to services. We hope interest they’ve expressed will develop into something like that.” In addition to the van Tate is pursuing, Heart Havens needs groups to adopt a room for furniture purposes. Three of the five bedrooms and a family room have already been adopted. The kitchen, two bedrooms and a porch need assistance. Tate said he has been visiting civic organizations to get them interested in adopting

a room. He said the Studley Ruritan Club had adopted a bedroom. When the doors open at Heart Havens in Ashland, a main supervisor and two staffers will be working in three eighthour around-the-clock shifts. Two other employees will help with meal preparation and the general running of the household. Tate said there is one primary supervisor and she/he may have more than one home to supervise. “We work very close with the Community Services Board in each location where there is a home because they’re a key factor in determining where the Medicare waiver funds go,” Tate said. “That’s a lifetime grant from the state for their upkeep and care. Once that waiver is granted, it’s for a lifetime.” On Monday, Pat Maher assumed the position of director of development for Heart Havens. Tate said she will be responsible “to give us some direction and guidance in our fundraising and development efforts.” She brings 14 years of experience to that type of work, having previously handled similar tasks with the American Cancer Society. “I think she will add a lot to our organization,” Tate added. When Heart Havens organized in the early 1990s, financial support came from the Virginia Methodist Conference, but that changed when it came a standalone 501(c)3 nonprofit. Now, Tate said, there is no guaranteed financial support from the church, but a strong emotional tie remains “because they gave birth to Heart Havens.” He became involved with Heart Havens around the time of his daughter Bonnie’s death. “I lived over in Henrico County for most of my life and when we moved to Hanover in 1989 we looked for a new church and I

In addition to 16 cases involving infected skunks and nine cases involving infected raccoons, there have been four cases involving domestic cats being infected with rabies this year. wound up going to Enon United Methodist Church. Art Wolz was the pastor. “Art was asked by the Methodist Church to leave the pulpit ministry and start Heart Havens. The Methodist Church Virginia Conference saw a need in the mental health field because of some state actions,” Tate said. “Art started from scratch. We formed VUMAR (Virginia United Methodist Agency on the Retarded).” The word retarded was eliminated and Heart Havens was born in 1997. Tate’s daughter was a cancer victim and “Art was so great to her in the last months of her life that made her final days a lot easier for her. And when he was asked to leave the pulpit and start what became Heart Havens he asked me to help him with fundraising and I couldn’t tell him no.” “Bonnie was a sociology major and she would have been completely in tune with Heart Havens,” Tate said. Although his daughter had no connection with the mental health field – she mostly worked with the battered women’s program at VCU – “she just had a sympathy for every lost puppy and every lost individual.” Tate, who lost his daughter in 1991, said “She was kind of the glue that held us all together (there were four other children). I felt I owed Art something because of what he meant to her and I got involved.” Part of the work Bob and his wife Janice perform for Heart Havens involves fundraising around the state. Heart Havens started with its first home in Virginia Beach in 1997. Eleven homes now operate. The organization’s role in a community is positive, Tate said. “They’re wonderful neighbors.”

Hanover takes second in duals, Lee-Davis ninth Hawks fall to Westfield in title match

By JP Beauchamp sports@mechlocal.com Last Saturday’s Hawks’ Duals at Hanover High School drew 16 teams from high schools near and far for a contest that was not for the faint at heart…even for the fans. Beginning at 9 a.m., wrestlers from teams making it to the finals wrestled a total of five matches by the day’s 10 p.m. conclusion. “This kind of competition takes a toll on you,” said Hawks’ head coach Aaron Bradley. “It wore some of the freshman down who weren’t used to getting so many matches. All the guys reacted well, nobody backed down.” Chantilly’s Westfield high School Bulldogs, a juggernaut of indomitability, continued their rumble to victory through the duals with Hanover finishing second. The short-handed Lee-Davis team finished ninth. To their dismay, the Confederates had the bad luck of drawing Westfield at the outset of the contest. “We had a bad draw in the pulls and we hit the No. 1 team (Westfield) early, which knocked us down into the consolation bracket,” said LeeDavis head coach Thomas

32

Riley. Lee-Davis later fell to Deep Run. “I think if we did things a little bit different we could have beat Deep Run, and be wrestling for 5th and 6th instead of 9th.” Coming into the contest two men down was no added comfort for Riley. “We’ve got two people out injured and some weight issues so we were missing a couple key spots. Our three-pounder got hurt halfway through the game because he pulled his back and it’s too early in the season to risk a further injury just for something like this. We had a few injuries earlier in the week that stopped our varsity guy from getting in the line-up. So, [the strategy was to] get the big points where we were missing the better wrestlers. Getting the key points where we needed to get them worked tonight. And our backups were wrestling hard and not giving up. We need to work on pinning a little bit better.” C-Fed, John Alexander at 189 earned his match over Hayfield the hard way. Working from the bottom and after frequently having his left leg jammed at an impossible angle by his opponent, the match was repeatedly interrupted due to injuries to the leg. The referee finally conceded the win to Alexander after his opponent tried the same tactic one too many times. “It was just the other kid

No. 4 RMC Jackets overtake No. 10 Williams 79-74 Danny Jones earns Most Outstanding Player honors with career high 27 points By JP Beauchamp sports@mechlocal.com Over 1000 basketball fans filled Randolph-Macon’s Crenshaw Gymnasium last Wednesday night to see one of Division III’s best contest’s of the early season. It was the championship game of the RMC Coach’s Classic but more importantly it was a faceoff between two top-ranked and undefeated teams, where the No. 4 Yellow Jackets were set

to take on the No. 10 ranked Williams Ephs. For junior forward Danny Jones and his Jacket teammates the expectations were high going into the game. “I

know we needed a win,” Jones said. “It was a home court, home fans, a lot of people showed up tonight so that’s always great. The goal was just to get a victory and to be number one for this tournament.” But despite expectations, the Jackets trailed by 16 with 12 minutes to play. Still, RMC managed to roar back and hand the Ephs their first loss of the season 79-74. Randolph-Macon head coach Nathan Davis knew his team was in for a battle from the Ephs. “We had watched them play on film; we watched them play last night,” he said. “We knew they were very

good. We also think we’ve got a good team too. We knew we were going to have to play well to have a chance to win. We thought it was going to be a close game all the way; and the team that made a few more plays, got a few more shots…we were the one that won. I actually thought we were getting pretty good shots. I thought our issue was that we were giving up layups.” Both teams came out strong and did not let up the entire game, but R-MC’s zone coverage allowed Williams to score in close to the basket. By the half the Jackets found themselves trailing by seven and five minutes into

the second they were down by 16. “We spent the entire half talking about how we were going to adjust what we were doing to try and prevent that, and we didn’t do it coming out,” Davis said. “So they scored nine quick points…all on stuff where we were in control (of). We didn’t make them do anything different.” After being tied a 31 with 2:40 to play in the first, Williams went on a 20-2 run to close out the half and beginning of the second for a 51-35 lead with 13:02 to play. “I thought that after that, our guys got a little upset and their pride was hurt,” Davis

said. “It was embarrassing.” Davis said his players finally came to the realization that they were on the verge of losing their first game of the season and they stepped up their play. “The guys carried over, got stops; and that allowed us the opportunity to score,” he said. “We had to do something to change up; and I give those guys credit,” Davis said. “At time out they said, ‘Let’s go out and let’s pick ‘em up and try to change the tempo tonight’, so they were able to walk down and get in their offense.” “We definitely dug our-

Against the Bulldogs, the Hawks fell 47-21. “There are a tough group of teams here,” Bradley said. Hanover, Lee-Davis, Atlee and Patrick Henry will take to the mats on Wednesday evening at 6 when the four teams face off in the Hanover Quad at Hanover High School.

was one of the few teams that didn’t have any holes.” It wasn’t until the finals that Hanover faced off with Westfield…but they did not go quietly into the night. Gabe Lavey and Brock Buchanan, at 135 and 145 respectively, surprised the Bulldogs with pins in the first period, Patrick Foxworth held on to a 3-0 lead he had earned with an escape and a takedown, and Zach Nussbaum, at 215, closed the finals by pin in the second period. “Concentrating on their techniques and wrestling at the same time, one of the players did very well today,” Bradley said with a smile. “[Nussbaum] got five pins in the day at 215. It was a great way to end the night. It’s good to get a win and a pin on the same night.” Bradley was pleased with the Hawks’ second place finish, which is their best in the event. “It went well,” he said. “We had tough opponents here in the last round. Ariail dominates second half in win over Generals Jackets’ senior center scores 18 after the break in ODAC victory

www.mechlocal.com See slideshow online!

By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com After a less than spectacular first 20 minutes of play against Washington & Lee, RandolphMacon’s Molly Ariail came out of the Crenshaw Gym locker room with a vengeance on Sunday afternoon. After a one-for-six shooting performance in the first half, Ariail (22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals, 1 assist) went 8-for-10, scoring 18 second half points to go along with three steals, three blocks and four rebounds in R-MC’s (5-2, 31 ODAC) 70-50 win over the Generals (2-5, 1-2). After falling to Christopher Newport last Wednesday, the No. 24 ranked Yellow Jackets needed the ODAC win to stay in the conference race. “Coming off the loss to CNU we needed to prove to everybody that we are RandolphMacon basketball and this just showed it,” said guard Maggie Roy. “This is a big ODAC win,” said head coach Carol LaHaye. “We’ve always struggled against Washington & Lee in the past and I thought we jumped out on them early and never looked back.” Playing in only their second game in a month and their first at home since November 24, the Yellow Jackets started the contest looking like a team that had spent a lot of time away from competition. Roy said it takes some time for the team to get back in the flow of things after the long break. “It’s hard but when we come back the coaches really pushed us,” she said. R-MC missed its first eight shots of the game and committed six turnovers in the first five

minutes of play. Now in her fourth year at Randolph-Macon, Ariail said it is still hard to adjust to the long break in action. “You know, I don’t think you do,” she said. “You can work out all you want at home but it’s not coming in here playing full court basketball.” “I think we were so pumped up to get this game going and back in Crenshaw Court; we hadn’t been here since November 24, so it was great to be back, but I think we had just a little (too) much adrenaline going through them,” LaHaye said. Junior Jennifer O’Briant (13 points, 5 assists) finally found the basket for the Jackets with 15:49 to play in the first on a three from the right baseline. However, as woeful as the Jackets’ offense was, Washington & Lee was even worse, committing six turnovers in the first four and half minutes and they

did not even manage to get a shot off until the 16:49 mark. With 15:11 left in the first, the Generals finally hit pay dirt when Meg Ingram connected on a three from the top of the key, but nearly five more minutes passed before they hit their second. In the meantime R-MC ran ahead 14-5 on the strength of their passing. The Jackets first six baskets of the game all came off assists. O’Briant and Roy (17 points) kept the Jackets going throughout the first half in which each scored 10 points. “In practice coach gives the guards the green light to shoot the ball when they’re open so when I see a team’s in a zone I take that to heart and I just shot as much as I could,” Roy said. The sophomore guard out of Mills Godwin High School, was 3-of-7 from three point range in the contest. Leading 31-21 coming out

after the break, the Jackets started to pull away. After the Generals trimmed the lead to eight on a pair of free throws from Felice Herman, RMC went on a 9-0 run. O’Briant broke the press and dished off to Renee Stien for a score in the paint then Ariail got her game going on an astounding play. When Roy’s shot bounced off the rim, Ariail found herself wrapped up by a Generals defender, so she adapted. Ariail pulled down a one-handed rebound and put the ball back in the basket all while having her left arm held. “The girl had my other arm so I figured, well one-handed, might as well,” Ariail said. Ariail scored 18 of the Jackets next 28 points allowing R-MC to pull out to a 61-36 lead with 8:17 to play and her team cruised to the win. “I usually like to take the leadership role but it just happened that I had the advantage

inside so I kind of got to lead by example too,” Ariail said. “I just did what I know I can do,” Ariail added. “I think I got away from my typical game in the first half so in the second half I refocused and my team got me the ball.” “We have a very good post player and we need to utilize that and sometimes we forget because we are a fairly balanced team,” LaHaye said. “We talked at halftime about making sure our post was touching the basketball.” Ariail was one rebound shy of recording her sixth consecutive double-double. After the long layoff, R-MC’s schedule comes into full swing this week. Following their game at Randolph on Tuesday night, the Jackets host league-leader Roanoke on Friday at 7 p.m. then host Hollins on Saturday at 2 p.m. “This week is going to be very tough,” LaHaye said. “It’s going to be hard but we

can do it,” Roy said. The Jackets finally took the lead when Croskey drilled a three pointer at the 5:16 mark for a 61-60 R-MC advantage. But it was Jones who gave the Jackets the lead for good on a free throw with just under three minutes left in the game. start putting up more shots,â€? Jones said. “Of course, some of them were falling for me tonight and my teammates found me when I was open.â€? Croskey said the key was getting the ball down low. “Getting the ball in the post; Danny Jones, Stick (Brandon) Braxton, Kevin Voelkel‌all of them; their post play was really working tonight; and our defense was incredible,â€? Croskey said. “[Coach] wanted us to change up tempo; and get up full court press manto-man. That’s when we really started to turn things over.â€? Not to go unnoticed was the Jackets’ consistency at the free throw line where they went 24-for-28 in the game. Shooting from the charity stripe allowed them to obtain and maintain the lead in the final minutes of play and seal their third win over a ranked opponent this season. “We work at it,â€? Davis said. “The guys work at it, and there’s nothing you can do but come in and take out your shots. “We have guys that can

make them, Davis added. “We can’t take them for granted. We’ve gotta be taking reps at them. There’s got to be concentration; it’s gotta matter to the guys, and that will be what carries over to the game. So, 24 of 28 is fantastic! Jones was thankful for the evening’s results, but didn’t let it get to his head. “I like [that I scored well], but I’ve still got things I need to work on my game, so again tomorrow I’ll go and work on those, he said. “It surprised me when we started down. We couldn’t stop any penetration, so it really hurt us. But, once we stopped that and we got a couple of stops, we were able to get back into it with some smart defense. R-MC made it into the championship game by defeating Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 82-52 on Tuesday night. In the game, the Jackets had three players score in double figures and used a 47 point second half to widen a half-time advantage. Eric Pugh led R-MC with

16 points on the night, making all seven of his shots from the field, while dishing out a teambest four assists. Croskey had 12 points, while Braxton had 10 in the win as well. Braxton, Kevin Voelkel, Jordan Brown and Billy Campion led a balanced rebounding effort that saw the Jackets win the battle on the glass by a 47-36 margin. The R-MC defense held the Trailblazers to 33% shooting on the night, allowing just 20 made shots on 60 attempts and forcing 17 turnovers in the process. Jon Greenberg who had 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in a losing effort paced MCLA (4-6) in the scoring. Mike Perreault chipped in with 11 points as well. R-MC held a 35-23 at the intermission and came out of the locker room and unleashed a 17-0 run to start the second stanza, taking a 29 point advantage on layup by Pugh. With the win R-MC moves to 10-0 on the season and could possibly be ranked as high as No. 1 when the D3hoops.com poll comes out on Wednesday.
