Wilson to critics: Central Office faces cuts too By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com As the Hanover County School Board considers a plan to save jobs originally targeted for elimination in the 2012-2013 budget proposal, the superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools took aim at critics’ claims that positions were not being cut in the
Central Office. During the School Board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14, Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson said, “We’ve had reductions at the Central Office in each of the last four years and go there to make cuts before we go to the classroom. In the last four years, we have reduced Central Office staff by 34.1 positions.”
She said five Central Office jobs were cut in 2009-2010 and 14.6 in 2010-2011. The proposed budget, which was presented on Jan. 10, called for 102.2 positions being cut — 14.5 of those in the Central Office. Wilson’s comments stemmed from remarks made to the School Board and Hanover County Board of Supervisors alleging too many
employees at that level. To balance the proposed $191.6 million budget, Wilson and her budget team had to overcome a projected revenue deficit of $13,955,299 and proposed cutting 88.4 full-time positions. The latest proposal for coming up with the deficit is titled “Option 4,” and changes in four of 12 budget areas will save almost all
of the jobs once feared lost. In the original proposed budget, reducing the number of senior teachers by seven would save $536,072. Under Option 4, four of the positions would be restored in middle schools with a savings now of $229,745. By reducing the percentage see WILSON, pg. 4
