Moore and Mackey 1 dead, 2 hurt in domestic case lead Atlee class of ’12

C

atherine Moore will be graduating from Atlee High School with a grade point average of 4.733 to lead the Class of 2012 as valedictorian. With a GPA of 4.625, Isaac Mackey is salutatorian. The daughter of Caren and Kenneth Moore of Mechanicsville, Catherine graduates with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. She serves as front ensemble captain of the Atlee Marching Raiders. She is a member of PEERS, the National Honor Society, Math Team and Science Club. In the community, Catherine is a member of the Girl Scouts and has received the Gold Award. She also is

a violinist in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra and violinist in the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra. She is a member of the Tuckahoe Square Dance Club. Catherine will be attending the College of William and

Mary, where she will major in biology with a pre-med focus. High school, she said, “has been a great time in my life. At times it’s been interesting balancing the workload of IB with my various music activities and still having some

semblance of a social life, but really high school has been wonderful and I have enjoyed every moment of it.” “It’s an incredible honor to be valedictorian,” she added. “I never really planned my high school career around the goal of being valedictorian; the numbers just ended up that way.” “There are so many smart and dedicated students at Atlee, all of whom deserve recognition for their accomplishments in school, and it is truly an honor to be surrounded by such wonderful and intelligent people,” Catherine said. “I’m excited for all the new opportunities available in college and further in the future,” she said. “While I currently have the goal of becoming a physician, it’ll be interesting to see what comes my way and

A 30-year-old woman is dead and two men were hospitalized for treatment of injuries received in what the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office has called a domestic incident in Mechanicsville. The victim has been identified as Sabrina M. Markham of the 8200 block of Candleberry Drive. Her estranged husband, Ryan P. Markham, 33, of the

7400 block of Colts Neck Road in Mechanicsville, was taken to VCU Medical Center following the Saturday afternoon incident. He was to be taken into custody upon his release from the hospital. The other man, whose name has not been released by authorities, also was transported to VCU Medical Center. School district earns continuing accreditation Hanover County Public Schools has earned continuing accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED.

This is Hanover County’s second term of accreditation as a district, having been one of the first divisions in Virginia to earn district accreditation through AdvancED SACS in 2006. AdvancED SACS provides nationally-

recognized accreditation, the purpose of which is continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must see ACCREDITATION, pg. 14
