County remembers 9/11 victims, military By Jim Ridolphi For The Mechanicsville Local It was an afternoon filled with remembrance on Sunday at the Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Station #10 in Ashland as local officials, citizens and local firefighters and emergency workers joined millions of Americans in commemorating the terrible events of a decade ago. The station unveiled its new 9/11 Memorial Garden, which featured a piece of steel from the base of the communications antennae atop Tower One. It’s a fitting and lasting memorial to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives when they rushed into the burning buildings 10 years ago without regard for their own personal safety, and the

thousands who died in the attacks on the Pentagon, World Trade Center and Shanksville, Pa. The tribute also recognized the many service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the war against terrorism since Sept. 11, 2001. Company 10 Chief EGAN Kevin Egan said the horror of the day left a lasting impression on the Hanover community, and recognized some of the families directly impacted by the attacks.
