County ups economic batting average By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local The news was mostly good as Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr., county administrator of Hanover County, delivered his annual state of the county address to local business leaders. A special needs cheerleading squad once known as the Firecrackers in Ashland is now a standalone group seeking nonprofit status. Team members and coaches, shown in front of the team’s new home, Gym Quest in Lakeside, are, from left, front row, Kelly Kerkeslager, Anna Hibbits, Amber Zicafoose, Ashley Williams, Lisa Wilson, Haley Woodward and Hannah Alevy, and, back row, Eddie Mora, Morgan McCullough, Amber Gillend, Jenna Jackson, Adeline Raquet, Abbie Zicafoose, Anna VanHuss, Colleen Lubking and Elizabeth Rafferty. and the county has a cash surplus largely due to savings in this year’s budget, Harris told a monthly meeting of the Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber last week at Randolph-Macon College. The abundance of good news was tempered by concerns regarding the state budget and how much localities will

be asked to pay to cover those anticipated shortfalls. Harris said first estimations place that possible payment at about $300,000. Even with the state’s budgetary burdens, Hanover continues to recover from an economic downturn that began for real in 2008. Most categories have rebounded to levels enjoyed

They are ready to cheer!

The county executive said the county is on a path of long, steady and sustainable growth. Recent refinancing of the Lewistown project should “help this area see its potential,” and an indoor shooting range is scheduled to open near Bass Pro Shops. see ECONOMIC, pg. 4

9/11 film strikes nerve with Hanover supervisors By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local A film shown in Hanover County high school history classes around Sept. 11 has raised eyebrows among some members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, parents and students. “Roots of 9-11” is a 100-minute documentary that presents differing viewpoints regarding why America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Many of the opinions expressed are voiced by Muslim

students in Qatar and other Arab countries. When Dr. Jamelle Wilson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, presented her annual school update last Wednesday to the supervisors, several members had pointed questions regarding the film, and why it was shown to Hanover County students on such an important date in American history. Chairman Sean Davis, Henry District, expressed the see FILM, pg. 15
