Director: center state-of-the-art
Dedication, tours scheduled today By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com As a part of the emergency communications system in Hanover County for more than 30 years, today’s ribbon cutting of the new center holds special meaning to Phil Heins. Last week, the director, who started as a communications officer in 1976, beamed with pride as he strolled through the state-of-the-art high-tech facility that is located at 7501
Library Drive on the grounds of the government complex in Hanover Courthouse. At 12:30 p.m., the ribbon will be cut to officially celebrate the opening. Tours also are scheduled. Hanover County residents are invited to join in today’s festivities. Voters overwhelmingly approved funding for the center Melody Kinser/The Local in a bond referendum on Nov. Phil Heins, director of Hanover County’s Emergency Communications, stands in the center of the 8, 2005. see DIRECTOR, pg. 4 `
Stately and inviting are immediate words that come to mind as a motorist drives by the property. A Lama Farm sign is erected by the country LINDA WOODDY road near the entrance to the long driveway leading to the house. The Wooddys became the most recent owners after coming upon the house while enjoying a Sunday drive. see LAMA, pg. 25 `

Welcome home: Lama Farm owners host former residents By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com
Melody Kinser/The Local
Three hundred years of stories filled the air on Saturday when the descendants and former residents of Lama Farm returned to the Old Church site. Rich and Linda Wooddy took possession of the historic Hanover County farmhouse in August 1998. In February, they started talking about hosting an event for all the families associated with Lama Farm. Last Wednesday, Linda, seated in her quaint, comfortable kitchen, was well prepared for the big event. She said planning officially became “fullblown” in the spring.
Santa arriving in village Dec. 5 anta Claus is coming to town on Sunday, Dec. 5, when he takes part in the 12th Annual Mechanicsville Rotary/ Ruritan Christmas Parade through the Village of Mechanicsville. Kicking off at 3 p.m., the parade will use the theme “Christmas Around The World”. The route will remain the same as last year, starting at Hanover Green Drive and Signal Hill, turning right onto Strain and proceeding through the Windsor Subdivision. The parade will follow Strain until it reaches Hillis Way, then it will take a right onto Hillis Way and proceed to Atlee Road. The parade will then turn right onto Atlee Road and continue until it reaches Mechanicsville Turnpike, then taking a right onto Mechanicsville Turnpike and continuing to Elm Drive where it will end. At the conclusion of the parade, Santa will disem-
new high-tech 911 operations room as a dispatcher fields a call. A dedication ceremony and tours will be held today at the center, which is located in the government complex.
Rich and Linda Wooddy opened their home, Lama Farm, on McClellan Road to the descendants of former residents of the 300-year-old house on Saturday.
