Did name change The Local Pick: vote lead to HCSB MRMC now implanting member leaving? world’s smallest pacemaker By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

HANOVER -When Kelly Evko assumed her duties as the Hanover County School Board representative for the South Anna District 14 months ago, she expected a myriad of challenges. She did not anticipate that a national pandemic would to be the first one to land on her plate. She also did not anticipate the abrupt ending to her tenure that occurred last month when Sue Dibble, Hanover County Board of Supervisors representative for the

South Anna District, appointed Bob May to replace her on the board. Evko was informed on the day of the announcement that she had not been reappointed to the South Anna seat. But, in reality, the decision to not reappoint her did not come as a total EVKO surprise. Reached shortly after she learned of her departure, Evko said the past 14 months were quite a challenging experience and expressed pride in the decisions made by her and fellow board DIBBLE see LEAVING, pg. 9

Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ECHANICSVILLE – Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center is now offering Micra™ AV, the world’s smallest pacemaker with atrioventricular (AV) synchrony. The device is indicated for the treatment of patients with AV block. Dr. Harpreet Grewal performed the first Micra AV implant procedure at Bon Secours Memorial Medical Center in the spring. AV block is a type of heart block in which the electrical signals between the chambers of the heart (the atria and the ventricles) are impaired. Pacemakers, the most common way to treat AV block, help restore the heart's normal rhythm and relieve symptoms by coordinating the electrical activity of the atria and the ventricles. When this process -- known as AV synchrony -- is achieved, patients experience improved quality of

M

DR. HARPREET GREWAL life, increased blood flow from the left ventricle and a decreased likelihood of pacemaker syndrome. Historically, patients with AV block have been treated with traditional dual-chamber pacemakers which are implanted in the upper chest, under the skin below the collar bone, and connected to the heart using thin wires called “leads.” Micra AV is inserted through a catheter and implanted directly into the heart with small tines. Because Micra AV does not

require leads or a surgical "pocket" under the skin, the risk of complications related to leads and pockets are eliminated -- as are any visible signs of the device. Micra AV has internal atrial sensing algorithms which detect cardiac movement, allowing the device to adjust pacing in the ventricle to coordinate with the atrium, providing “AV synchronous” pacing therapy to patients with AV block. “We can now offer AV block patients an option that is one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker,” said Dr. Grewal. “That’s comparable in size to a large vitamin, which means we implant the device through a minimally invasive approach. That’s a great benefit to our patients.” Dr. Vivak Master has joined Dr. Grewal as a cardiac electrophysiologist who performs Micra AV implant procedures at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center. For more information on Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center visit BonSecours.com.

Hanover Dash $6 co-pay returns after one year HANOVER -- Established in December 2019, Hanover DASH is proud to continue providing personalized transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, errands, employment and formal social programs for those 60+ and persons with a disability. When Hanover DASH celebrated six months of continuous operation on June 12, 2020, our community was in the midst of a global pandemic. Recognizing the financial impacts, Hanover County announced that the usual $6 one-way trip fee would be waived until further notice. This support over the past year has had a

significant impact for the program as well as for the individuals that it serves. During the first six months of the service (December 2019-June 2020), Hanover DASH had 145 registered riders and provided 608 trips. As of June 14, 2021 (just over 18 months since the program began), the service has grown to 316 registered riders and has provided a total of 5,556 trips. This growth demonstrates the importance of this service. The majority of trips continue to be for medical appointments and errands but employment also is a growing see DASH, pg. 4

Birthdays still bring out the kid in some By Melody Kinser Managing Editor good friend was celebrating his birthday last Tuesday (thank you, Facebook, for reminding me of these special occasions). I posted the obligatory “Happy Birthday” gif, but realized that wasn’t enough for this particular individual. He received the special treatment: A voicemail of “Birthday” by The Beatles. I let it play in its entirety. No, I didn’t leave a message -he’ll recognize the phone number. Birthdays have always been a big deal in my family. The honoree gets to select dinner and

A

favorite cake, and, yes, there are gifts. As we’ve aged, this tradition has endured. Dad was like a kid in a candy store when it came time for him to be the guest of honor. At Christmas, it was a toss-up as to who was the worst at trying to sneak a glimpse into packages. Yeah, it was between him and me. I guess I’ve been thinking more about birthdays than usual. On July 25, I’ll reach one of those milestones in life: No. 65. So, what does one do for such a significant birthday? This is one of the unique parts of aging: Things/stuff have less importance. And I was a material girl before Madonna released the song.

These days, I cherish the memories of those who are no longer with us, and I try to make the most of the time spent with those who are. My brother-in-law will be 70 in September and COVID-19 prevented us from giving Mom the celebration she deserves when she reached 90 last November. Maybe a party for three could be on the agenda in the fall. I’m thankful for the blessings the Lord has bestowed upon me, and that certainly includes bringing me to this community. We’ll all heard that age is just a number. Well, I say let’s make the most of every number we have. And then let’s cut some cake.

Smiles abound when children spend time with family By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist They say the best things in life are free. It takes some much longer to come to that realization than others, but most of us eventually come to a reckoning that reinforces the old saying. It’s not difficult to appreciate the value of good health, good friends and a family that loves you, but it’s easy to forget the little things in life

that make it special, meaningful and worth savoring. My children are in Florida visiting my sister and her family that includes aunts, uncles and cousins. Their visit is not unlike millions taking place in America as the country enjoys simple pleasures that only summer can provide. Across the country, cousins gather with cousins to invade amusement parks, overflow local pools and consume an unknown number of

snow cones, and make memories that remain long after the beach has closed. My sister, her husband and son and daughter team up to make sure their visits are always filled with adventures and experiences they would not experience at home. One called mid-week to relay an adventure that I would not have quite frankly associated with her. “Hey, Dad, I got to hold a baby alligator,” my daughter excitedly said.

And that’s the magic that summer vacations can provide, a unique chance to experience something out of your comfort zone, and there’s always that one uncle that will let you ride the zip line. My nephew has updated me all week with photos of the kids having fun. The pictures of all of the kids together tell a story of a week of fun and adventure. Dog discarded rather than taken to shelter This letter is for the person who discarded his/her elderly dog like he was just trash. I will never understand how someone could be so heartless. It’s the same as leaving a defenseless child to fend for him or her. If you were in dire circumstances and could not keep him, were you so cowardly that you could not bring him to the county shelter to rehome? I know you do not care about what happened to him because you never made a lost report or came to the shelter to claim him. He would surely have died if Hanover Animal Control had not found him. He was by the side of the road. He could not walk. They rushed him to the emergency vet thinking he’s been hit by a car. However, being a dachshund, he was suffering from a back issue. They lovingly cared for him with cage rest and meds until I adopted him. You see, I am an old rescuer and cannot sit by while a senior dog languishes. He’s mine now. He is getting all the love and care I can give him for as long as he has left. When his time comes, I will place him next to the other innocents I have rescued, loved, and lost. But, I cannot figure out why he walks around my house crying as if he is looking for someone. It makes me sad to think that he misses you even though you don’t care. Teresa Jacobsen Mechanicsville

Schuh and Sellors lead Atlee as valedictorian, salutatorian By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Nicola Schuh leads the Atlee High School Class of 2021 as valedictorian with a Grade Point Average of 4.58667. She is the daughter of Christian Schuh and Ivonne Schuh of Mechanicsville. Nicola was a member of the German National Honor Society and participated in the IB program. She will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall “where I hope to major in chemistry and minor in psychology.” As a student at Atlee High School, Nicola said, “I got know many wonderful people during my time at Atlee and I will continue to carry their influence with me. Atlee is not just a school but a community of caring people that are willing to help you through the high school experience.” “This year has been more difficult than others, with some students learning online and others in-person, but the Atlee teachers have

persevered while always providing for a positive learning environment,” she said. “I look forward to attending the University of Virginia in the fall so that I may continue my academic journey with all that Atlee has taught me,” Nicola added. Atlee’s salutatorian is Ian Sellors, who has a 4.56923 GPA. His parents are Norma and Graham Sellors of Mechanicsville. members during that difficult period. “I was part of a team that made some difficult decisions. It was a most difficult year for education,” Evko said. “We had a lot of decisions to make and none of them were easy. We made some very tough decisions and did what others were not willing to do and we gave parents the choice back in September of five day faceto-face, the only locality in the state to do that.” Evko said allowing face-toface instruction was a team effort that involved everyone involved in K-12 education. “I am grateful for the teachers and administrators that made that happen,” she said. “Without them, it could not have taken place. I’m proud to be part of a leadership team that made those decisions.” She said she began her tenure with clear-cut goals and a desire to continue a tradi-

tion of excellence in Hanover County Public Schools. “My goal was to continue that reputation of excellence,” said Evko, a 31-year resident of the county. Almost immediately she was faced with an issue that divided differing factions in the county regarding the names of Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School and efforts to change the names that were offensive to some students and members of the community. In a 4-3 decision, the board opted to change the names of both schools. Evko said it was one of many tough decisions the board faced during the past 14 months. “I took that and every decision seriously,” Evko said. “I listened, I read, I talked to people and investigated every decision that we were making. I don’t take any of them lightly and I really felt like I did what was in the best interest of the students in all of the decisions

we made.” She ultimately voted for the name changes, a vote she does not view as political. “I did not take this position to further my political career. I have a love for the school system and thought what can I do to help,” she said. Dibble selected Evko from a list of four candidates to fill the remainder of her term on the school board when she was elected to represent the district on the board of supervisors. While on the school board, Dibble was consistent in her opposition to the name changes, but she nor Evko were willing to publicly acknowledge a connection to what some considered a premature departure with her vote to change the school names. Dibble said her decision not to reappoint was due to a combination of factors. “Ms. Evko’s vote to change the names was one of many considerations in my decision not continue her appointment. Was this one vote a factor in my decision

-- yes, but it was not the only factor, nor the most important factor,” she said when reached last week. Dibble said her recent decision to appoint a new member on the school board to represent South Anna was a business one. “As a supervisor, it is my obligation and duty to select individuals whom I believe will best serve our South Anna community and our county as a whole . . . I have certain expectations for all of my appointments,” Dibble said. “With regard to the school board, these expectations include: good listening and communication skills, proven leadership in business and in the community, experience in preparing and managing budgets, and, most importantly, a team player attitude.” Dibble is confident in her recent choice and said she moves forward with confidence in May. “Mr. May possesses all of these qualities and I look for-

ward to working with him, as a team, to serve our Hanover community, to represent our South Anna constituents, and to continue our success and excellence in Hanover County Public Schools.” Both Dibble and Evko, however, acknowledged the presence of a deteriorating relationship with a diminishing amount of communication during the past months, and Evko said the writing was on the wall regarding her reappointment. After taking the vote, Evko expected the reaction. “I was well aware of the implications. I knew at the time that my tenure could be shortened,” she said. “It was a hard vote for me. It was not an easy thing to do, but I believe in my heart it was the best thing for students in the county and for the county in the long run. As I got into it and listened to the concerns of students and researched, it became clear that it needed to happen.” She said she continued

to face challenges facing the board with the same confidence with which she entered the position, and credited her fellow board members for their dedication and commitment during a difficult period. “I was honored to serve with all of them,” she said. She also reiterated her desire to continue to serve and utilize her experience in making tough decisions still facing the board. “I felt like I had something to offer on this board. My experience in budgeting and planning were essential, and I thought I brought a good dynamic . . . and another female on the board is never a bad thing,” Evko said. “Our job is not a political job necessarily . . . not to do what is politically popular but do what is best for the students,” Evko said in a recent interview. “I feel good about the decisions we made during the last 14 months and we acted with the students’ best interest in mind, always.”

series of adventures and new and interesting venues they visited was the happiness that being with family and a week with cousins can provide. For many of us who have travelled to some remote locations in a lifetime of journeys, the memories of those sum-

mers with friends and family are often the ones that stand out in our minds. As I stared at the latest batch of photos, I had a revitalization of the true joy and comfort that a smile on your child’s face can provide. Seeing all of those smiling faces gave me a renewed appreciation for the things in life that bring us happiness and cannot be

purchased. The memories made in this short week will hopefully give these kids images that will pop up for the rest of their lives when they think of summer, and perhaps admire a smile on the face of their child. It also proves that some things in life remain constant, and spending summers with cousins is a tradition that has

stood the test of time when it comes to enduring memories, at least in this household. I probably won’t remember the many places they visited during that busy week, or the numerous new things they saw or experienced. But, I surely won’t forget those smiles or the joy that is uniquely felt when visiting family and making summer memories.

LETTERS Continued from pg. 6

ing my op-ed “Nation should embrace systemic unity, not racism” demanded this response, submitted without malice to set the record straight. Before launching into my rebuttal, I must first set the table. When publishing, (1) reproach is a double-edged sword through which authors and public critics are accountable for errors, oversights or bias and (2) research to establish fact is always necessary, a habit I acquired through years of publication, not only with op-eds but with major works and my weekly message, “Two Minutes with Christianity.” Instead of criticizing the central theme of the op-ed, you concentrated mainly on systemic racism, particularly in law enforcement, using data that contradicts one of my statements, while questioning if I had read the data you cited. Allow me to first address two of your comments, one inconsequential and the other unacceptable. z Inconsequential: the subject op-ed did not quote either JFK or Abe Lincoln, both of whom have been quoted in previous op-eds by me. Perhaps you were referring to those op-eds, not this one. z Unacceptable: Your interpretation/rewording of my views and statement regarding the Chauvin-Floyd incident, “he says Derek Chauvin is just a bad apple and we should forget it and be happy Blacks and Whites ‘stand in line together’ now” is not an accurate summary of my perspective or my statement that not only condemns Chauvin, as well as other incidents of social injustice, but calls for action, “The death of George Floyd at the hands of a Caucasian thug, who was then a trusted public servant of the law, is tragic as is any incident of social injustice. However, selected outliers like Derek Chauvin, despicable as

they may be, indicate the need for improved vetting and ongoing monitoring/accountability, but they do not support the allegation of systemic racism in law enforcement, a conclusion widely inconsistent with the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics examination of the matter using accounts from victims, not law officers.” When selectively characterizing others, direct quotes as opposed to summations, appraisals or conclusions are best to avoid harmful effects. My conclusion that racism is not systemic in law enforcement was and remains based on the Jeffrey H. Anderson, March 5, 2021, article in the Wall Street Journal, which refuted Joe Biden’s claim of “Systemic Racism” in Policing. The entirety of the article, which includes extracted data and the link to the cited report, can be found with a simple Internet search; thus, in the interest of brevity, only a few extracted paragraphs that summarize the findings are provided here: “… In a report released days before Mr. Biden’s inauguration, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics examined whether people of different races were arrested to a degree that was disproportionate to their involvement in crime. The report concluded that there was no statistically significant difference by race between how likely people were to commit serious violent crimes and how likely they were to be arrested. In other words, the data suggested that police officers and sheriff ’s deputies focus on criminals’ actions, not their race. “The BJS report did not take cops’ word for who commits crimes. Rather, it relied on victims’ own accounts of who committed crimes against them, as reported through BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey. “The NCVS, which dates to the Nixon Administration, see LETTERS, pg. 13

is the nation’s largest crime survey. Its results are based on about 250,000 interviews annually with U.S. residents, who are asked whether they were victims of crime within the past six months. In addition, the NCVS gathers data on who actually commits crimes — according to the victims — thereby providing an independent source of data not reliant upon police records …” My source and yours used different measuring sticks: (1)

I don’t see it here. I don’t see on our school board,” she said. “We don’t feel that love here in Hanover County.” Hunter-Jordan cited the recent controversy regarding the changing of two Hanover County schools named for Confederate leaders. “There have been numerous casualties as a result of the decisions made by this board for our school board,” she said. “Earl Hunter Jr., a Black man, was removed from his position and replaced by a Caucasian woman. She made the error of voting for the schools to change their names and she was gone.” Hunter-Jordan also cited the abrupt departure of then school board chair Roger Bourassa. “We don’t know why he left. Perhaps, he was leaning that way.” The local chapter president said a number of qualified African-American candidates have placed their names in nomination for important board positions, but have not been selected. “They were told ‘Sorry, but we have a committee we can put you on’.” She also cited a lack of Black teachers in Hanover schools. “We don’t have Black teachers,” she said. “There is one teacher who did not want to retire this year from her school because she was the only Black teacher,” Hunter-Jordan said. She queried the board for answers. “So what, as a board, are you going to do? Where is the equity? We are asking to think about equity, think about the promotion of equity and equality for all of us. We are citizens of Hanover County.” Supervisors do not respond to comments made during Citizens Time.

yours, rate of threat and physical force against Blacks and Hispanics vs. Whites; (2) mine, arrests. And if one digs deep enough into either report, perhaps other key factors skewed data one way or the other, such as the resistance rate of lawbreakers that led to law enforcement actions. As always, truth is an elusive quarry. As for lauding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while criticizing progressives, a broad term that covers quite a bit of ground, the op-ed defined progressive as “those who serve themselves with little or no regard to the

consequences.” Under the umbrella of that definition, Dr. King, a selfless man who gave his life to remove oppression in America, is most certainly excluded. Although you and I have different political affiliations, we are both human beings and Americans who likely share love for our nation. We should respectfully agree to disagree, a habit absent Inside the Beltway, an arena where political gamesmanship abounds and is recklessly prioritized. May God bless you. HANOVER -- Hanover NAACP president Pat Hunter-Jordan took to the podium during Citizens Time at last week’s Hanover County Board of Supervisors meeting to air concerns regarding representation of minority county citizens. “I stand here a bit perplexed this afternoon,” Hunter-Jordan said. “We want to ask the question ‘Do you really see us? I mean, do you hear us, do you understand us as a people of color?” “I ask that question because I see that we are continuously overlooked,” she said. “I wake up every morning Black and I know what that means and I know how that feels. But, none of you have had that experience and so you can’t make decisions that affect us as a people without our involvement.” “I wish you had an inkling of how that feels,” HUNTER-JORDAN she continued. “I wish you had an inkling of how the Brown Grove residents are feeling when their community was targeted to become industrialized land.” She equated the plight of minority Hanover taxpayers with those who are “taxed without representation.” Hunter-Jordan referenced recent Hanover County School Board appointments that have failed to produce minority appointments in past years. “I want you to understand that equity should be a part of every board here in Hanover.

Ashland Police Chief: Be mindful of pedestrians when driving and walking (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Chief Douglas A. Goodman of the Ashland Police Department.) ASHLAND -- With the arrival of summer and the end of the school year, the Ashland Police Department wants to remind everyone of pedestrian safety tips while driving and walking around town. With warmer temperatures, more residents and visitors will be walking around town on sidewalks and crosswalks, many of them chil-

dren enjoying summer break. Tips for drivers: z Be alert, do not drive distracted. z Expect the unexpected. Children may cross the street in unexpected locations or suddenly run in front of you. z Double check your surroundings before backing out of your driveway and parking spots. Tips for parents: z Teach children to cross streets at crosswalks or intersections with pedestrian signals.

z Stop, Look, and Listen before crossing the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing a street. z Remind children not to play in or along streets and parking lots. All residents are reminded that Virginia state code requires motorists to yield for pedestrians that are in crosswalks by slowing down or stopping if necessary. State law also requires that pedestrians show due regard for approaching traffic before crossing the road.

Pedestrians can improve their safety by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective material or flashing lights at night. While light colored clothing can be helpful in making you visible at night, reflective tape or reflective fabric is much better. During the next few weeks, the Ashland Police Department will be conducting speed and pedestrian safety patrols in areas heavily travelled by pedestrians. Remember: Be Safe and Be Seen!

KING WILLIAM COUNTY | Serving the communities of Aylett, King William, Manquin, Mangohick and Walkerton

Hanover Habitat adds King William, Ashland, West Point Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -After 30 years serving Hanover County residents, Hanover Habitat for Humanity is expanding their service area into King William County as part of its vision to ensure everyone has a decent place to live. The organization’s new name will be Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity. Habitat operates three key programs in the community, including an affordable homeownership program, critical home repairs, and a ReStore that operates as a nonprofit home improvement store. Joseph Jones, president of the Board of Directors and vice president at PNC Bank, said, “We are excited to serve even more individuals and look forward to partnering across the community.” Hanover County spans 469 square miles of countryside and Richmond suburb. After adding King William’s 274 square miles of rural community, Hanover and King William Habitat will have 743 square miles, 119,547 residences, and 33,788 households. King William County has

a total population of 16,329; 10.9% of those are living below the federal poverty level. In comparison, Hanover County has a population of 103,218 with 5.8% below the federal poverty level. Anne Mitchell, retired King William Department of Social Services director, said, “Over the years I have seen a great need for affordable housing as well as housing repairs in King William. The need for repairs is especially critical for the elderly who are on a

at market rate. With volunteer labor and subsidized costs, Habitat helps families achieve financial independence. Hanover and King William Habitat is currently building its latest Habitat home on North Center Street in Ashland. Habitat is actively searching for viable, buildable land in both Hanover and King William counties for future homeowners. Habitat’s repair program addresses critical needs to keep homeowners safe in their

fixed income with no other resources.” In Habitat’s homeownership program, Hanover and King William Habitat typically serves individuals with an annual household income between $30,000 and $63,000, depending on family size. In this program, individuals have steady income, but need access to a more affordable housing option to purchase their home. Teachers, first responders and other critical workers in the county often fall within these income levels and can find it challenging to afford a home

homes when they are unable to afford repairs without assistance. Repairing owner-occupied homes allows a healthy and stable environment for families. Hanover and King William Habitat typically serves individuals with an annual household income less than $44,000, depending on family size. Most recent repairs have been for senior citizens living on Social Security. Habitat expects the demand for programs like this to grow as the number of senior citizens living in the area continues to grow. In Hanover

County, the number of households with individuals 65 and older has grown 36% since 2010 and accounts for 18.5% of the population. In King William, 16.3% of the county is age 65 or older. Habitat is taking applications for critical repairs for residents of both Hanover and King William Counties. More information can be found on the organization’s website at www.hkwhabitat.org. Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Renee Robinson said, “The Hanover community has supported us over the years through volunteering and funding. King William has already shown us that they are just as excited to do the same for their community!” Find more information on ways to get involved or to inquire about the programs available at Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity, visit www.hkwhabitat.org or call 804-569-6108.

Families are welcome to visit their loved ones inside their apartments and take them out for holidays and special occasions. The Easter holiday, signifying hope and renewal, was the apex for residents looking to spending quality time with loved ones off-campus. “It almost felt surreal,” Smith said. “We were all excited; this was the first time our residents really got to be with their families in over a year. I received a lot of pictures that day from families who captured this special moment.” Beginning March 12, 2020, and following guidance from the Center for Disease Control,

the Virginia Department of Health and Heritage Senior Living, its management company, Heritage Green, no longer permitted nonmedical visitors and guests from entering the building in efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19. “We had to rethink our community’s lifestyle and what that meant to the health and wellness of our residents. Isolation, feelings of loneliness, depression and anxiety can turn into a major health crisis for older adults,” she said. Instead of meeting for scheduled events and dining, the staff began a door-to-door service, delivering snacks, beverages, meals, and arts and crafts. A simple utility cart was reimagined and renamed the “snack shack.” The unique circumstance had a silver lining. The staff seized the opportunity of this one-on-one experience to communicate better and make

meaningful connections with the seniors they serve. “Our residents still needed care, and they still needed us, probably more than ever. The Heritage Green team really rose to the challenge, often making personal sacrifices to ensure residents had what they needed.” Smith said. For nine months, Heritage Green was able to keep COVID-19 out of the community. Unfortunately, the community learned it wasn’t immune. “My team was ready to handle COVID; however, it was still a shock. You think you’re so close, the vaccine was on the horizon, and BAM … we have our first resident test positive,” she recalled. It was a whirlwind experience that called for all hands on deck to mitigate the spread of the virus. Everyone was pushed to their limits. Employees, along with resi-

social cats living around your property, the best thing for them is to stay where they are already comfortable and at home rather than relocating them. If you need assistance spay-

But the Heritage team put “unity” in community. “In the darkest days, we were our residents’ caregivers and family.” Despite the anguish and distress, the pandemic managed to bring people together. Hanover County, in particular, Smith added, showed huge support with the fire department and EMS workers calling daily to check in. Residents’ families and other area businesses provided staff luncheons and encouragement. “We can hold our heads high knowing we did our very best to protect, love and care for those who depend on us. GRAL teams emphasize fun and training By Rob Witham for The Local MECHANICSILLE – Whether the meet is actual or virtual, whether the swimmer is a novice or most experienced, at Greater Richmond Aquatic League events Wednesday night, a choir of coaches around the area echoed the same theme: Have Fun. In two meets which showcased four Hanover teams, Ashcreek defeated Ashland in a virtual meet 1036-952, while, in person, Hanover Country Club fell to Atlee 1109-663. But the more important story is how area youth are enjoying the opportunity to experience both more of a sense of normalcy than in last year’s abbreviated campaign, and simple childhood fun. “That’s always the thing for my swimmers is to try their best and go out there and just have fun, which is what I always preach to them,” noted Ashcreek head coach Kaelin Jernigan. In this, the fourth week of the six-week regular season, competitors are setting their sights on reaching cut times to qualify for Champs, the GRAL’s annual championship event scheduled for July 26 and 27. Atlee head coach Lacey Kramer noted as much when reviewing her team’s performance against Hanover. “We had some incredible time drops, so that was really Kramer said. There were three for Hanover cool to see, and it was really nice Atlee earned 12 quadruple and one for the Crocodiles. to see everyone get up, race, and race winners while Ashland had Highlights include leave everything in the pool,” 10 in their meet with Ashcreek. Ashcreek’s Drew Ericson, win-

The two 8-year olds also finished one-two in the 25-meter butterfly, Yonce just missing the senior varsity qualifying level of 24.35, winning in 24.53. Ericson won the novice division in 32.34. Family tandems also make a difference. For Ashland, the Datovechs combined for seven victories, Christine taking four, including the 15-18 100 butterfly in 1:09.66, the 50 freestyle, equalling her best time at 27.62 and joining older brother Paul, Davis Luck and Mark Dinger to take the 200 medley relay in 2:00.29. Paul, in his final GRAL season, shaved .28 off his best time in the 100 butterfly, winning in 1:05.06, and a victory in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.46. The Crocodiles got three wins apiece from Brock and Pierce Rempe. Pierce won the boys 11-12 50 breaststroke in 41.25, and the 100 individual medley in 1:24.00, taking over three and one half seconds off his personal best. Brock was victorious in the boys 15-18 100 IM in 1:02.29, as well as the 50 free in 25.57. Over at Atlee, Austin Ogden bested his seed time in the boys 8- and-under 100 IM, breaking the two-minute barrier to win in 1:56.22, while also qualifying for the varsity division in the 25 breast, winning with a time of 26.81. Ava Jones earned junior varsity level with a 43.72 winning time in the girls 9-10 50 backstroke, and just held off teammate Sofia Henderson to win the 50 free in 38.78, a half second better than Henderson’s 39.28. Henderson joined Rory Shelton, Aaron Barden and anchor Mauren Verity to take the 9-10 200 medley relay finishing in 3:14.31. Meredith Boggess and Camden Byrd each won four times for Atlee, combining forces with Jason Brown and Elijah

Dave Lawrence/ The Local

Above, Atlee Recreation Association’s Samantha Zachariasen takes the lead over Hanover Country Club’s Emerie Gonzales in the backstroke leg of the first heat of the 9-10 200-yard mixed medley relay in a Greater Richmond Aquatic League meet at ARA Wednesday. Left, Hanover Country Club’s Ryder Robinson spreads his wings in the butterfly leg of the second heat of the 9-10 200-meter mixed medley relay at ARA Wednesday.

McIntire to win the 15-18 200 medley relay in 1:51.90, Boggess taking the girls 100 back and 50 breast, with Byrd a winner in the 50 free. Times that caught Coach Kramer’s eye included McIntire’s winning time in the

15-18 boys 100 butterfly, qualifying for senior varsity level by shedding nearly five seconds of his personal best for a time of 58.22. Reagan Brittle took over four seconds off her best time in winning the girls 11-12 50 butterfly in 40.62.

For Hanover, it was a good night for Jerrin Flinchbaugh. The 8-year old captured the boys 25 free, taking over three seconds off his best time to qualify at the senior varsity level at 17.19, and the 25 butterfly in a new personal best of 24.37 to

earn varsity qualification. Campbell Derrico took top honors in the 13-14 girls 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.50 to make the senior varsity level, later joining Chance Greene, William Droppleman, and Finn Winegardner to win the 13-14

200 medley relay in 2:09.34. For all four teams, lots of swimmers produced new personal best times as their quest to qualify for Champs continues. With two meets to go, attention will turn to achieving that quest, and Jernigan says proper teaching is key, especially for those who did not participate in 2020 due to the pandemic. “We had to really work on technique a lot more this year, to get them back into the swing of things,” Jernigan said. “How to do the technical things rather than going fast. We want them to do it correctly and do that first before they go quickly.” But through everything, the common thread is always fun, as noted by Kramer, in trying to give the children some of their life experience back. “We’ve been doing theme nights every meet to get everyone more engaged with everything,” Kramer said. “At practice, it is crunch time, but I also make sure the kids are having fun.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com

Tom and Claudia Phillips donate funds to Wings of Hope Ranch Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com WESTERN HANOVER COUNTY -- Wings of Hope Ranch welcomes the Tom and Claudia Phillips Covered Arena, a 19,050-square-foot building made possible by a $273,000 securities donation from Tom and Claudia Phillips. The facility will be located on the ministry’s Tower Road property in Western Hanover County between Ashland and Montpelier, encompassing a 127’ x 150’ structure that will house a 90’ x 125’ riding arena and space for future planned development. Site preparation will begin in summer 2021 and groundbreaking for the Phillips Covered Arena will take place in fall 2021. “We are so thankful for this transformational gift,” said Alison Boyd, founding director. “The Phillips’ investment will enable the ministry to grow for years to come, expanding our ability to minister to children facing conflicts and challenges. God is abundantly providing for the ministry’s future.” In addition to the covered riding arena, the building will include 14 stalls, tack and feed rooms, a wash stall, storage for equipment, shavings and hay, and a devotion and sensory space, to be built in the future as donations allow. At the end of December 2020, Tom and Claudia Phillips reached out to Wings of Hope Ranch to share that they would like to invest in the

60th and 50th class reunions being held for ’61, ’70 and ’71

future of the Ranch through a named gift. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips first learned of Wings of Hope Ranch some years ago through their nephew’s wife, Mary Gravely. The family had been longtime supporters of Wings of Hope’s mission, rescuing neglected horses to provide a horse ministry to children facing conflicts or challenges in a Christ-centered environment. In 2019, their son in-law and daughter, Kenny and Melissa Janes invited them along with old friends Tina and William Word and Calvin and Ginger Stanley to join them at a dinner where the vision of the Forever Home was presented as part of the Board of Directors’ long-term strategic plan. At the dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips also learned about the professions of faith by ranchers, families, and volunteers. The Forever Home encompassed purchasing land and building facilities where the ministry could permanently reside, serving the community for generations to come. From its founding in 2006, the ministry has operated out of borrowed facilities. Boyd said, “Donations received from dinner attendees and a grant paved the way for Wings of Hope to purchase 50 acres on Tower Road in March of 2020. The purchase of the land took the Forever Home from a strategic vision to reality.” One year later, on a chilly, rainy October day, the Forever

Home committee welcomed friends of Wings of Hope to a COVID-friendly open house on the Tower Road property to present the proposed phases of the Forever Home: Horse Ready, preparing the land for the horses; Barn Raising, building a barn with programming rooms and office space; and Year-Round Ranch, a covered arena so sessions could be held in various weather conditions. The timing of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips’ gift will allow the Horse Ready and Year-Round phases to be built simultaneously. Phillips said, “Claudia and I knew we would provide some support to the ministry, but learning about the professions of faith really impressed us and led us to make a much larger gift. By supporting the addition of the covered arena, Claudia and I see Wings of Hope greatly growing in their ability to serve more children.

We want children to have the opportunity to participate in sessions regardless of daylight hours or rainy weather.” The Phillips’ gift led the Forever Home committee, a volunteer group heading up the Tower Road property’s development, to pursue designing the covered arena and barn under one roof. Since the December 2020 donation, the committee has visited equine facilities, met with contractors, and partnered with architects to finalize plans for the facility. The donation of many individuals who believe in the ministry work taking place at the Ranch and who have come alongside to make the Horse Ready phase a reality has been humbling for those affiliated with Wings of Hope Ranch. When talking to Mr. and Mrs. Phillips about why they chose to invest in Wings of Hope, he said, “We’ve been
