Hanover County has become only the second county government in Virginia to receive a U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award (SPQA). Local man donates 101 pints to Blood Services A Mechanicsville man recently donated his 101st pint of blood with Virginia Blood Services. Frank Payne has been donating blood since August 1987. “Giving blood has been very enjoyable, the collectors are very professional and very caring,” Payne said. He said he decided to start donating blood because he was healthy and wanted to help. His wife Anne Payne also is a blood donor. According to Virginia Blood Services, one pint of blood can save up to three lives, so Payne could potentially have saved more than 300 lives in his blood donating career. Ashland woman dies in car wreck An Ashland area woman was killed last Wednesday in a single-vehicle accident on Independence Road. According to Capt. Michael J. Trice of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, Anna M. Wright, 21, of the 14000 block of Deer Creek Road died after the vehicle she was driving ran off the right side of the road, crossed back and struck several trees off the left side. Wright was traveling south on Independence Road, about three-fourths of a mile north of Blanton Road. She was the only occupant in the vehicle. Emergency personnel responded to the scene just after 7:15 a.m.

Pole Green Park was the place to be Blame it on the rain. Even though we escaped stifling temperatures on Saturday, a downpour — and no doubt the forecast for storms — apparently kept attendance down for the 2010 Hanover Tomato Festival. Last year, Mechanicsville’s largest one-day event, saw a record-breaking 42,000 people fill into Pole Green Park. Blue skies, temperatures in the 80s and a nice breeze welcomed festival-goers in 2009. This year, however, was another story. Mother Nature had really been bringing on the heat — in the form of triple-digit numbers — for a few weeks. Sweltering temperatures seemed to be an early concern — that is, until the possibility of rain came into the picture. While much needed, the arrival of rain did not put a damper on the excitement. Those who came out obviously enjoyed the food, vendors, games, activities and entertainment. From the time the Hanover Concert Band delighted the audience in the main stage area with a variety of favorites until the final tomato of the day was sold under a big tent in the center of the park, this year’s Tomato Festival brought to Mechanicsville the kind of experience we have come to expect. Simply put, a good time was had by all. Many festival-goers came prepared with umbrellas — and when the clouds opened up, there were no grumblings or frowns. Many waited it out under the tent at the main stage (where the Little Miss and Tiny Miss Tomato Festival Pageant winners had just been announced) and then returned to roaming about the grounds in search of tasty treats, great retail items and fun for all ages. Thanks to the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department for starting a true county tradition. Thanks also to the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department, The Herald-Progress and your very own Mechanicsville Local for bringing us a great and memorable day. Treasurer’s group honors Miller with prestigious award Hanover County Treasurer Scott Miller has become the first person in six years to win one of the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia’s most prestigious awards – the Commonwealth Award. The Commonwealth Award has been given only 13 times in the last 30 years and recognizes those persons whose vision, integrity and leadership has helped to enhance the association through years of devoted service. Miller was named “Treasurer of the Year” by the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia (TAV) in 2004. He served as the TAV’s president in 2005-06 and has been a leader of many of the association’s committees both before and after his presidency. As chairman of the Treasurers’ Education and Curriculum Development Committee, for example, Miller has helped create training opportunities for treasurers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. He also has served on the TAV’s Board of Directors, its Legislative Committee and its Futures Committee, which deals with long-term issues faced by treasurers throughout the state. Additionally, he has served as past chairman of the Software Tax User Group, helping other treasurers with issues related to that implementation. Miller will become chairman of the Software Tax User Group again in 2011. “Scott conducts himself in a professional manner at all times and he has done a lot to help other treasurers throughout the state,” Lee Pfeiffer of Cumberland County, chairman of the TAV’s Awards

and that surplus evaporated faster than you can say, “tax break” — two unfunded wars, the decimation of financial regulation and a bunch of richfolks tax reductions later, you have that debt you’re whining about. To the extent that Obama has continued Bush’s misguided wars, he has contributed to that debt, though he has tried to pay for it more . . . but an extremely high percentage of the growth of that debt, about $12 trillion, can be laid squarely at Dubyah’s feet. Trying to paint it as all Obama’s fault shows that, despite all the high-minded rhetoric about Tea Party principles, at bottom you’re just another Limbaugh-esque conservative. But much more importantly, the vast majority of that debt you complain about was created not by the social programs you spend so much energy ranting against, but by those wars and the concurrent tax reductions. You folks are part of the gung-ho, guns-n-god, kick butt first and take names later crowd, so why aren’t you willing to step up and help pay for the wars you promoted? Here’s the “fact” part of my letter: you WILL. As will I. And our children. Whether you like it or not, even if you eliminated every single government giveaway program except Social Security and Medicare (which nobody, even in your wildest dreams, can eliminate), as long as you continue to fund the military at anything remotely close to current levels, you will still need to raise taxes significantly to pay off the wars and get us back to a balanced budget. Are you ready for that? Or do you

He and brother Ray examine life in the back, outside of Angel’s Bar one night. Open burning ban in eﬀect As of 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 12, open burning is banned in Hanover County due to the drought. The ban on open burning was declared by County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. on Friday after consulting with the State Division of Forestry and the Fire Marshal. Failure to comply constitutes a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500. Each violation or failure to comply shall constitute a separate offense. The prohibition remains in effect until the county administrator declares the hazardous condition and the prohibition to have terminated.

Del. Christopher K. Peace, R-Hanover, received a score of 91 percent on the legislative report of Virginia FREE’s recently released 2010 General Assembly report card. The legislative report informs citizens on key business-related votes taken by the General Assembly during the 2010 session. Virginia FREE compiles annual voting records of all General Assembly members on important legislation affecting business and industry. In addition to being ranked on their 2010 vote percentage, legislators also are rated on a 2010 business rating scale. The scale is as follows: legislators with a business rating of 75 or above and are consistent supporters of pro-business views, legislators with a rating of 55 to 74 are frequent supporters of pro-business views, and those with a business rating below 55 are occasional supporters of pro-business views. All members of the Hanover delegation are rated as strong business supporters with Del. Peace and Del. John Cox rating an 84 and Sen. Ryan McDougle rating an 85 on the 2010 Business Rating. Stewardship is another category in which Virginia FREE assesses legislator’s performance. According to its report, to determine stewardship ratings, Virginia FREE member government affairs professionals are

asked to complete a confidential, anonymous survey in which they subjectively evaluate legislators on a 10-point scale from 10 to 100 where 100 represents the most pro-business score. Street taking part in Summer Newsweek: Maggie L. Walker Undergraduate Research in the Top 20 in the nation This summer, James Street of Mechanicsville is participating in the Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. You can follow Street’s unique experience through an online blog at http://news.rmc. edu/summer/. Street’s research title is On the Equivalency of Knot and Graph Invariants. To participate in SURF, Street had to write a proposal for grant money to fund his research. He is one of 34 students conducting cutting-edge research this summer in psychology, chemistry, biology, mathematics, business/ economics, environmental science, history, philosophy, literature and drama. The Schapiro Undergraduate

Research Fellowship was first introduced in 1995 as an endowment to support scholarly undergraduate research by RandolphMacon College students in all disciplines. The continued generous support of Benjamin Schapiro, Class of 1964, and his wife Peggy allows R-MC students the opportunity to conduct their own original research, under the guidance of a faculty member, and be paid a stipend. Many students continue the projects beyond the summer and present their findings at academic and professional conferences both nationally and internationally. This level of in-depth research is usually reserved for graduate students at other colleges and universities.

For the fifth consecutive year, Maggie L. Little Leaguers play Major League game District V 9-10 championship turns into one for the ages

If there ever was a truer example of that axiom it came during Friday night’s District V 9-10 baseball championship between Atlee and Mechanicsville National. At an unprecedented level of skill for 9-10 year olds, Atlee and Mechanicsville played a nearly perfect game, going toeto-toe offensively and play-forplay defensively over the course of nine innings and a span of 2:34 hours. The six pitchers involved in the game combined to strike out 17 batters while giving up only 10 walks. But most astounding, the two teams combined to commit one error and even that was one which often occurs at a Major League level. “There were very, very few errors,” said Mechanicsville manager Dave Fose. “Off the top of my head I can’t even think of one. It was outstanding.” Atlee manager Rodney Chenault agreed. “To stay focused and to go through all of that,” he said. “A lot of balls are being hit. It’s really easy for a 10-year-old kid to lose focus

out there playing almost three hours. “The amount of plays that were made in that game were just unbelievable for any age kid, but for 10-year-old kids to be playing like that was just awesome,” Chenault added. But one team had to come

away with the district title and on this night it was Atlee. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Atlee’s Carson Miller sent a shot into deep center that allowed Jack Chenault to come home and break a 1-1 deadlock. The two teams took far dif-

ferent routes to the championship game. Atlee breezed by most of their opponents, winning in five innings or less due the mercy rule. On the other hand, Mechanicsville fell to Richmond in their opener and dropped to the loser’s bracket. But the

National team fought back, winning four straight including a revenge matchup with Richmond, to reach the title contest. “I always tell our boys, ‘You’re not going to be the best hitters on any given day. You’re not going to be the best fielders

on any given day. You might not be the best pitchers or catchers. But one thing they can never take away from you is your heart and your hustle.’” Fose said. “I couldn’t have been more proud of them for the efforts they put in here.” The heart and hustle of Mechanicsville even earned a tip of the hat and round of applause from Atlee following the title game. “Those guys, my hat’s off to them. They played great,” Chenault said. “They pitched well. They made all the plays in the field. Really a class act.” Both starting pitchers, Atlee’s Dalton Davis and Mechanicsville’s Dylan Hairfield were impressive, only exiting the game after reaching their 75 pitch limit. A defensive battle from the start, the only runs in regulation for either team came in the second inning. With two out in the top of the second, Mechanicsville’s Austin Woodfin sent a grounder toward first. Atlee’s Nick Zona fielded the ball then flipped it to Davis covering first. But the ball hit the top of Davis’ glove and as he fought for control his foot barely pulled off the bag allowing Woodfin to reach safely and notching up the only error of the game. Mechanicsville Seniors take third straight D-5 title Mechanicsville beats heat with hot bats By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Prior to Tuesday’s Little League Senior division District V championship game between Mechanicville and Tuckahoe, the thermometer read a scorching 101 degrees. But the searing sun pounding the dusty fields at Manchester could not top the heat produced by the Mechanicsville bats as they blistered Tuckahoe 17-4 in five innings to take their third straight District V title. But this year’s Senior team is far different from its predecessors. With several players hovering around the six foot mark, this year’s squad easily outsizes its opponents. However, Mechanicsville is not a team of power but one of finesse; scoring 17 runs on mere nine hits with only two hits taking runners further than first. Sixteen of the 17 runs scored were the result of a teammate’s assist as Mechanicsville chipped away at the Tuckahoe defense like Michelangelo on a slab of marble. “We are a finesse team,” said Mechanicsville manager Terry Woodson. “I know we’ve got a lot of big guys on the team but the little guys are the grit and grind. They’re grinders.” Pitcher Mike Folds was one of those grinders, standing tall on the mound through numerous long counts and only succumbing to a brief second inning lapse. “He’s a very good pitcher (but) he gets too many full counts, which means his pitch count gets high,” Woodson said. Folds gave up a lead-off double to Tuckahoe’s Brandon Soden but then struck out the next two, gave up a walk on a full count and escaped the

inning by getting Alec Walker to ground out to short. In the bottom of the first, the Mechanicsville bats made certain that Tuckahoe pitcher Steven Davis’ stay on the mound was brief. With one out, Chad Woodell got things going with a double to left center, stole second on a wild pitch then came home on a shot into the gap by Will Caudell. Following a walk of Folds, Taylor Curran singled to right allowing Caudell to score on a remarkable bending slide around the tag of Tuckahoe catcher Chris Estep. A walk of Adam Smith then loaded the bags and signaled the end to Davis’ day. Facing relief pitcher Joe Lovings, Austin Hoy kept the rally going with a shot to short. The throw home was high and Folds made the lead 3-0. Next up Cory Woodson grounded out to short but picked up an RBI as Curran

came home. Steven Weirup then made the lead 5-0 when his shot into the gap plated Smith. Terry Woodson said from that point on his team was no longer thinking about the soaring temperature. “Once they got that lead; the adrenaline; the heat didn’t even bother them any more I think,” he said. But Tuckahoe answered in the top of the second, taking advantage of long pitch counts from Folds. Davis reached via walk, advanced to second, then third on wild pitches and came home on a single by Will Engels. Back-to-back-to-back singles from Ryan Alley, Scott Lamothe and Dan Perkinson drove in two more runs to pull Tuckahoe within two, 5-3. But following a walk of Nic Philips that loaded the bases, Folds regrouped to strike out the next two batters and get Walker to ground out to sec-

ond. It was Mechanicsville’s turn to answer in the bottom of the second. Back at the top of their lineup, Hazelwood lead off by being hit by a pitch. On the

night Hazelwood went 0-for-4 from the plate but reached base his final three times by being hit by pitches. Hazelwood stole second then reached third when Woodell’s hopper to the mound nullified the possibility of a pick off. Next up was the long, lanky Caudell. Though Caudell went 2-for-4, hit two doubles and pushed home six runs, the 6-1 catcher made the play of the game running the bases. With Hazelwood on third, a pass ball from Caudell appeared to be a guaranteed out. But Estep fielded the ball, stalled Hazelwood at third then threw to teammate Engels who stood 10 feet short of first to attempt a tag. But once again Caudell proved untouchable, bending around the tag of Engels to reach safely and allow Hazelwood to score for a 6-3 lead. The margin continued to blossom as Mechanicsville took advantage of Tuckahoe indecisiveness on defense and raced out to a 13-3 lead by the middle of the third inning. Tuckahoe scored one run

in the top of the fourth but Mechanicsville answered with four more in the bottom of the set for the final score. Woodson said it is the spirited nature of this year’s Senior squad that makes it different from season’s past. “Overall, last year’s team had the talent,” he said. “They were more talented but we’ve got the fight. “They are fighters. They persevere,” Woodson said. “We went down 3-0 the first two games and came back. We were down 4-3 came back, 5-4 came back, whatever. Every time we went down we came back. Even today’s game we went up 5-0 they came back and scored three immediately. Then we went right back on them.” Mechanicsville advances to the state championship hosted by Plaza Little League in Virginia Beach. The team reports to the tournament on July 16. Davis avoids problems at Southside For the past few weeks at Southside Speedway, Mechanicsville’s Brad Davis has started the races he has competed in with good luck at the beginning of a race, but fell victim to bad luck at the end. Davis, in both the CHAMP Kart and the Late Model divisions, has had strong runs only to fall short due to either incidents on the track or close finishes for the win. But this past Friday night, Davis put all of the past incidents aside and set sail for his second win of the season in the CHAMP Kart division, his first since the season opening

race back on April 16. But again, the win almost didn’t happen. Davis led the race heading into the final laps when points leader Buzz Moore made a bid for the lead on the high side of the track with two laps to go. The two cars went side by side for the win with Davis beating him to the line by a few inches. “That was a tough one tonight. I’m just glad I beat Buzz to the line.” Davis said following the win. “We have had several bad weeks in both divisions and I hope this is a sign of good things to come.” J.D. Eversole placed third

with David Emory and Cameron Wood rounding out the top five. Frank Silva held off a late race charge by Jamie Hite and Rusty Bennett to win his first race of the season in the UCAR series. Silva battled with Bennett and David Kerns for the majority of the race. Kemler keeping it together for 175 By Charlie Leffler cleffler@mechlocal.com Over the two years Bryson Kemler has played for the American Legion Post 175 baseball team he has seen diversity. Last year, Kemler was fresh off a state runner-up season with the Hanover Hawks when his main goal was to make the Legion team and see some playing time. He became a solid contributor on a squad that turned in one of its best performances in recent history, reaching the district championship game. This year has been the opposite in many ways. Kemler, who now plays for William & Mary, is the lone collegian on a roster dominated by high school underclassmen. Due to inexperience, Post 175 has taken its share of lumps and hopes to just reach post season play this season. “I liked playing on the team last year,” Kemler said. “But last year’s team was a lot older and it was a little different experience being at the top rather than being closer to the bottom like we are this year. “Last year we had, I want to say, four or five returning college players, a lot of kids were going to go to college the next year and play,” he said. “This year I know we have a few of those but it’s definitely a lot more juniors and even sophomores than last year when I was on the team.” Kemler said there was a major adjustment period for his teammates as the season got under way because they were not used to playing nine inning games or packed schedules. “I know a lot of

these high school kids are used to seven inning games so that extra 30 minutes or however long it is, is a little tough and so many games in a week can be a little tough. But they’ve gotten used to it.” Another aspect that has changed for Kemler is going from being a player that looked up to the leaders to being the elder statesman and leader for this year’s squad. But Kemler saw no pressure with the change in roles. “Not really, really it calms me down,” he said. “I think last year I was a little more nervous coming into legion with a lot of older guys and really wanting to prove that I

belong here. This year with a year of college baseball under my belt I think it’s a little more relaxing to come into a league like this and play with younger guys and just have fun.” Kemler has lived up to his billing, standing among the Legion’s best. Through 14 games Kemler has scored 15 runs, recorded 26 hits with a .448 batting average. He has hit two homeruns and has 16 RBI for a slugging percentage of .724. Ironically, a year ago Kemler was unsure if he would even continue playing baseball. Because he placed a premium on education rather than athletics Kemler got few looks from colleges coming out of high school. Prior to graduation, Kemler told Hanover head baseball coach Charlie Dragum that he wanted to attend a top academic school such as Virginia or William & Mary. Therefore he really was not interested in being recruited by a Div. II or Div. III baseball program. At the same time, Kemler did not think his baseball talents were on par with UVA. “You know UVA is obviously a really good baseball team, top talent in the country. I wasn’t up to that level I didn’t think.” Kemler liked William & Mary but he had only limited contact with the Tribe’s baseball program and was actually considering a walk-on role with the football team. “This time last year was when I really started getting recruited,” he said. “It wasn’t until July, two months before I went to school. That was

really weird because I know that hardly ever happens in Div. I baseball. “Then I got a call from their head coach Frank Leoni and talked to him for a little while, talked to him a couple of times,” Kemler said. “I guess he kind of reached out to me. You know, ‘We’d love to have you, at least come out for the team and see if you like it. “Over the course of the summer it was coming down to me deciding, do I want to play baseball or football there,” Kemler said. “I went with baseball because I’d get a little more chance to play as a freshman.” This past spring, Kemler played in about one third of the Tribe’s games and set himself up for a more substantial role as a sophomore. “Last year I was kind of the fourth outfielder off the bench and this year I’m really hoping to get into the starting lineup,” he said. “I’ve been working out a lot and just trying to work on what the coach told me I could improve on in our end of the year meeting. Hopefully I can go back in the fall and show him I’ve worked on it and just get a chance to crack into that starting lineup whether in the outfield or maybe moving back

I’d just love to be in that starting nine.” And though he was a twosport star at Hanover, Kemler, who is considering a Biology Major and Pre-Med said the importance he’s placed on education will keep that from happening at William & Mary. “No way,” he said. “I would love to. I loved it in high school. I think I was able to balance it pretty well but you know in college in general and especially in a school like William & Mary, just playing one sport and having all those academics to deal with is tough, I couldn’t even imagine playing too. That would be just a little too ridiculous.” American Legion Post 175 closes out their regular season this week with three home games at Atlee, Tues.-Thurs. at 7 p.m.

Mechanicsville girls capture 9-10 year old title By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent A familiar rivalry rekindled last weekend as the Mechanicsville 9-10 year old softball All-Stars took on the Atlee in the District V playoffs at Tuckahoe Little League park. Mechanicsville came away with an 11-1 victory in a game that was much closer than the score indicated. “If we could have pushed a few runs across early and made a few key defensive plays, it could have been a lot closer, but they are a great team and they deserved to win today,” said Atlee coach Mike Chenault. Mechanicsville wasted no time scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning after Atlee failed to score in the top. Sidney Guess drove in Kelly Warren and Heather Childress when she towered a shot to right field that just missed the wall. Mechanicsville added a run in the second inning when Elizabeth Hudson scored from third on a wild pitch, to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Atlee started off with a triple by Lauren Hughes, but Childress ended that threat by striking out the next three batters, stranding Hughes on third. Atlee attempted to utilize their speed and bunt their way back in the game, but a stout Mechanicsville defense wasn’t accommodating. “They came out early in the game like they wanted to win more than we did,” Chenault said. “We settled down as the game progressed, but they played the entire game and kept pressure on us.” The Mechanicsville bats came alive again in the fourth inning, scoring three runs for

a 6-0 lead. Atlee pushed across a run in the bottom half of the fifth when Sydney Kuester scored on a fielder’s choice. Mechanicsville ended the game early with five runs in the fifth inning making the score 11-1 when umpires called it. Childress finished her afternoon with a three-run inside the park homerun that put the game out of reach. “She had a great game today,” Coach Johnny Sheffield said. “She had a solid, poised performance on the mound and had some good swings at the ball,” he added. Both teams know each other well and Sheffield said it’s always a big game when the two meet on the diamond. “They have a great team, and we knew it would be tough. We also knew it was important to get out early and keep the pressure on them.” Both teams advanced to

weekend play in the tournament, but Atlee’s hill through the loser’s bracket was a much steeper route to the finals. Chenault’s team needed to defeat Tuckahoe to get another shot at Mechanicsville in the championship and advance to the state tournament. “We’ll have to beat them (Mechanicsville) twice to get in,” Chenault said. But the coach still had confidence in his young girls. “They are a great group and it’s been fun coaching them, and we still have our eyes set on our goals,” he said. In the back of his mind, a rematch seemed at the forefront on that list. “I hope we get to play them again,” he smiled. Atlee did get that rematch, but could not come up with the win, as Mechanicsville defeated them 11-1 in the title game, claiming the District V championship and a trip to the states in York County this weekend.

12 U Virginia Heat take fast pitch tournament Memorial Day Weekend 2010 will be remembered by the Virginia Heat girl’s softball team for years to come. They finished 9-1 on their way to a championship beating Lake Shore Lighting from Maryland 7-6. Forty-one teams from seven states participated in this three-day tournament in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The Heat lost their first pool play game to the Washington Wildfire (Pennsylvania) and then commenced to win their next five pool play games, earning them a spot in the Gold Bracket Championship Round. The championship game was thrilling and close throughout. The Heat took a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. They retired the first two batters however, the next two reached base. Powell heads list of local All-Metro athletes By Arthur Utley Media General News Services If Kathleen Lautzenheiser were to stand on Lizzie Powell’s head, and both girls stood straight and tall, their combined height still wouldn’t reach the 10-foot, 6-inch mark the area’s best pole vaulters clear regularly. Though small in stature, the two are giants in the Virginia high school track world. Lautzenheiser, a distance runner from Midlothian, and Powell, a pole vaulter from Patrick Henry, share this year’s Times-Dispatch girls outdoor track athlete of the year honor. Both are seniors. They headline an All-Metro team that includes top sprinter Tori Cunningham of Meadowbrook, versatile Montasia Golden of Lee-Davis and Prince George shot put and discus standout Alyssa Isham. Powell’s performance in the recent New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. was far below the standards she has set during the past year. “I didn’t do as well as I hoped, but you have bad days or an off day,” Powell said. “With everything I’ve done already, I’m proud of myself.” This spring, Powell repeated as the Central Region and state Group AAA pole vault champion. She set meet records each time. During the regular season, she became the first girl in Virginia to clear 13 feet. She vaulted 133 in a state qualifier meet at Deep Run. Powell wrote her next goal, 13-6, on a mirror she sees every day at home. It’s still there even though she won’t compete again until this fall at Virginia Tech. “Initially I wanted to be an all-round athlete,” she said, “but my hope and chances to go to the Olympics are in the pole vault. Having my focus on one event is helpful.” Last June, Powell didn’t know what her future held. She was just beginning treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She is in remission now, and her records speak for her recovery. She said she didn’t think much about last year while on an annual beach vacation. “I was walking on the beach with my best friend, and I saw a girl about

my age tanning, and she had a buzzed head,” Powell said. “She had people around her so I didn’t talk to her, but it hit me and made me look back. It’s only been a year. Atlee 11-12 softballers are District V champs Girls defeat Tuckahoe for District V title By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent The Atlee 11-12 girls’ softball team will carry the District V championship banner to the state championship tournament that begins later this week in Strasburg, VA. The girls gained that honor by defeating the Tuckahoe AllStars 2-0, capping an almost perfect tournament record. During the three-day event held at Tuckahoe Little League’s park in western Henrico County, Atlee gave up no runs, no walks and only allowed one runner past second base while scoring 17 runs. Defense is the team’s

hallmark, and they didn’t disappoint in the championship game, allowing only three hits and registering another shutout. Coach Eric Kuester pointed out that the victory and title were a “total team effort” with everyone contributing. “At some point in this tournament we got something from every girl on this roster,” he said. “These girls have gone out and done whatever we asked,” he said. “They are a group of hard workers, they know each other and play well together. I’m so impressed with their work ethic.” Atlee scored in the bottom half of the second inning when Mallorie Fodill bunted in Eryn King from third base. In the bottom of the third, Ashton

Hughes led off with a single and advanced to third on an Erin Acors single to right field. Hughes scored when Kendall Ramey singled and Atlee was up 2-0. That was all pitcher Laura Kate Moss needed coupled with Atlee’s unshakable defense. “Laura Kate had a great game today,” Kuester said. “She hasn’t walked anyone the entire tournament.” Atlee resumes practice this week and heads to Strasburg this weekend where Kuester likes the team’s chances. “Defense keeps you in games,” Kuester said. “If we come out and we play defense like we’re capable of playing, it’s going to be very difficult for any team to come in and put us away. When you keep a game close, anything

can happen.” Atlee’s All Stars are comprised of a majority of 11-year olds with four 12year olds. “Sure, we’re a young team, but they’ve played in some tough situations like today,” Kuester said. The coach doesn’t make predictions, but he did have some thoughts on the upcoming tournament. “I wouldn’t be so bold as to say that we’re going to go in and win the state tournament, but we’re going to show up and leave our mark there. Following walks of Davis and Josh Brown, Michael Warley sent a shot to left to drive in Davis and tie the game. Hairfield and Davis reached their pitch limits in the fifth bringing about similar decisions from both dugouts. Because a win by Mechanicsville would force a rematch, both teams switched to their proposed Saturday starters for brief stays. Mechanicsville brought ace Nathan Evans to the mound while Atlee went to Nick Zona; each for solid 20 pitch appearances. In the top of the sixth, Atlee replaced Zona with their ace Jack Dragum. “The plan was to bring Jack Dragum in for 20 pitches so we would have him for tomorrow,” Chenault said. “But we were in a tough spot and we had to make a decision. game. “We, as a staff decided to go with Dragum and he was just like he always is,” Chenault said. “He came in, got us out of an inning and just pitched flawlessly. That’s why he’s our No.1. That’s why we want the ball in his hands at the end of the game.” Atlee threatened to take the lead with two out in the bottom of the sixth after Brown doubled on a grounder over

third base. A walk of Warley then put two runners on base and Mechanicsville’s Orion Riccardi came to the mound. Jack Chenault took a Riccardi pitch and sent it to center but Josh Durbin made a twisting catch to end the threat. It was Mechanicsville’s turn to threaten in the top of the seventh. Riccardi led off with a shot to deep center. But the

Equaling the efforts on the mound and in the field were the catching performances from both teams. Mechanicsville’s Conner Hicks and Atlee’s Miller each turned in outstanding efforts. “I mean how few pass balls were in this game tonight,”

Chenault said. “Their catcher Conner Hicks, I can’t tell you how many runs he saved for them with the blocks. But the catchers, it’s so important the pass balls that we didn’t have.” And it was Miller overcoming adversity in the top of the ninth that saved the game for Atlee when a foul tip bounced off the dirt to hit him at the belt line. The game was briefly delayed as Miller caught his breath and walked off the injury to eventually set up his game-ending heroics. In the bottom of the ninth, Chenault was walked then moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt from Zona. It appeared Dragum would make the game-winning hit when he drilled a shot to short, but Mechanicsville’s Evans made an amazing stop on the ball to hold Chenault at third and limit Dragum to a single. With Atlee runners occupying the corners, Fose made the decision to intentionally walk Jewell and load the bases bringing the recently injured Miller to the plate. “He got hit on that foul ball and he sucked it up,” Chenault

said of Miller. “He came up and I said, ‘Carson, let’s win this game right here’ and he’s a clutch kid.” A deep shot to center from Miller was all Atlee needed to take the win. Atlee advances to Abington to play in the state tournament starting July 16 and Chenault feels good about his team’s chances. “I think we’ll do well,” he said. “We’ve heard from many people in the past that our District V is very good baseball and if you get out of your District V you should do pretty well when you get to the state.” Though Mechanicsville National left with a loss on paper, they will always have the winning memories of playing in one of the best games in District V history. “You can’t get a better ball game than this,” Chenault said.
