ECHANICSVILLE – Debbie Nininger is desperate – her husband Scott needs a kidney transplant, so she took to the social networking service Nextdoor in her quest to locate a donor. Her email, which reached 45 neighborhoods in the Mechanicsville area, read: “I know that this forum is used for neighbors reaching out to one another. This being the case, I thought I might take a chance and see if I could get some help with outreach. My husband, Scott Nininger, is in need of a kidney transplant. If anyone would consider helping, please message me. If anyone has any ideas as to how to get this message out, again, please message me. Thank you in advance for any assistance. We really need some help soon. This is what I posted on Facebook with all the information, thank you for taking time to read my post. I am trying daily to find a

MECHANICSVILLE -Hidden in Plain Sight, a free community initiative suitable for parents, grandparents, other community members and any adult who works with or cares about young people, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at New Song Church located at 7450 Colts Neck Rd. in Mechanicsville. A replica of a teenager’s bedroom will be on display for participants to browse and observe, becoming familiar with where and how teens might hide drugs or paraphernalia. Seemingly innocent items commonly used by youth could actually indicate a substance abuse problem. Would you be able to recognize signs of substance use and effectively intervene? Do you know what a lottery ticket is used for, or what about a mason jar or a dryer sheet? Don’t know the answer to these questions? Then this event is for you. It will allow you to be more knowledgeable and proactive in helping a young person who might be using drugs, but also prevent youth from even starting. This event is hosted by the Teens Care Too Coalition, which is comprised of Hanover County high school students dedicated to educating their peers and parents about the dangers of substance use. Heather Johnson, Adolescent Development Specialist with Hanover
Metro Creative Services
County Community Services serves as one of the group’s advisors. “Parents in our community are often told to watch for warning signs that their teen might be vaping or using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. Sometimes those signs are hard to see, even when they are right in front of you. Our teens know what’s going on, and that’s why we always have them onsite to help parents snoop through our mock bedroom,” Johnson said. The success of this event is due to the collaboration of the community partners. Hanover Cares is comprised of concerned organizations and citizens that raise awareness of substance abuse issues and work towards reducing substance use among underage youth. Hanover Cares Executive Director Octavia Marsh said she is excited to continue to bring this event to Hanover and partner with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, Hanover County Public Schools and Hanover Community Services. “The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will have an officer lead a presentation and ‘reveal’ over 75 items hid-
den in the bedroom, along with discussion of trends and signs of possible drug and alcohol use. I believe parents will be amazed at what is happening now with our youth,” Marsh said. “Youth experience peer pressure much more now than 10 or 20 years ago, and often have a perception that all their peers are using drugs and alcohol, or even vaping, when in fact that is not the social norm in Hanover,” she added. “We need everyone in our community to become prevention advocates, because prevention starts in the home. Our goal of this event is to educate the community, encourage engagement and conversation at home, and connect people to community resources.” Hanover County Intervention Counselor Majken Whitaker will provide a special presentation to parents called “Talking Tips” to prepare parents to effectively discuss this difficult topic with their teen. “Parents always state that they have learned things at these events they would have never thought of. As parents, we all need a little help, guidance and support to prevent negative consequences while navigating through these important teen years,” Whitaker said. Because of the sensitive nature of Hidden in Plain Sight, it is not recommended for children. There is no cost to attend the event, but pre-registrasee HIDDEN, pg. 4

Reader suggests history lesson for African Americans
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
B
efore Sept. 11, 2001, the date that always stood out in my mind was Nov. 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. I was a mere 7-year-old second grade student when that tragic day rocked the country. Fast forward 38 years to what I assumed would be a fairly routine day at the daily newspaper in Williamson, West Virginia, where I served as editor. As was the norm, I grabbed the phone to check with the news editor before I would get ready to head to the office. Audrey asked if I had the television on. I said “No” and she said “Turn it on.” “What channel?” “It doesn’t matter -- turn it on.” A scene unlike any image I’d ever seen covered the TV screen. We shared our shock and start planning for coverage. I knew I had to get to the office as soon
as possible. The airplanes striking the Twin Towers in New York City was repeated over and over in a surreal airing. My mind was swirling as I hurried to get ready for what I knew would be a long, busy news day; the adrenalin had already kicked in. Audrey and Charlotte, our senior writer, had mapped out a plan, with both having contacts in the affected areas, including the Towers and the Pentagon. It was remarkable to learn how many local connections there were to what had been taking place in three locations. We were cool and organized, knowing what we had to do. There wasn’t time to free ourselves of the emotions stirring within us. Staff members were coming in and out of my office to view any updates on the TV news. I was continually following Associated Press content. Despite the horror that we all knew had
occurred that morning, the newsroom was buzzing with the goal of providing as much local coverage as possible about a national disaster. I still have that edition in a box among other career mementos. If memory serves me correctly, we had five or six local stories. The AP article was in the lead position, with a 200 point headline (that’s really big!). As we prepared to release the pages to the press crew, exhaustion settled over us. But we were satisfied that we had given our best to our readers. That’s always the priority. Our world changed that day 18 years ago, and for those of us that worked diligently to inform our community it was a day we’ll never forget. Yes, we did take time as the presses started rolling to offer prayers for the victims, survivors, families and friends of all involved. Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001? It’s a date we’ll never forget . . .
Smokey Bear still delivering a message 75 years later By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Product mascots have certainly changed over the years, and today’s icons associated with our favorite products bear no resemblance to the ones that first appeared in television
ads years ago. Most did not stand the test of time, while a few have remained ingrained in our collective memories. My early memories of television and product mascots include a distinctive episode that I found utterly confusing at the time.

Our family watched the variety shows of the era like I love Lucy and The Jackie Gleason Show, and television commercials were often live productions associated with the show. The weirdest, to me anyway, was the appearance of a less than four-

In response to the article “Rallies” in The Mechanicsville Local on Aug. 26, it does not seem to me that the NAACP lawsuit is not actually about African American students First Amendment rights being violated or exclusion from sports because of the mascots’ names. This article sounds more like the NAACP bullying until they “have it our way” as stated in the article; it was a desire to resolve this matter before trial date. Because the outcome previously made by the Hanover County School Board did not go Robert Barnette’s or the NAACP’s way, does not mean it was not resolved. Interviewing one African American student and his opinion does not warrant a name change because one group feels the students did not get a proper education or excluded from extracurricular activities. Let’s just stop with the negative comments as to why the schools were given these names but understanding that the names were selected to, yes, honor these great men who fought for their homeland and their means of living that were being violated by the North. Seems to me that there is no difference in selecting those names than naming a building, a park, a street after such people as John Gandy, Martin Luther King, Arthur Ashe, Barack Obama, which may offend many others outside the African American race. Just as the African Americans and their special groups look at the positive things accomplished by these men, maybe they should all have a history lesson and look at the positive accomplishments of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson. see LETTERS, pg. 8

amusing, but I’m not sure I want either associated with my company — but it works. One of those icons that has remained fresh and vital throughout the decades has his beginnings before television, but still attained national recognition. Smokey Bear turns 75 this month, and, truth be known, the years have been kind to the
sharp-dressed bear. Smokey also is unique in that his creation was not brainstormed at some ad agency conference table, but was inspired by actual events. When Forest Service workers arrived at a fire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, they discovered a badly burned three-month-old bear cub.
New Mexico game warden Ray Bell and his wife nursed the cub back to health. They named him Hotfoot Teddy. The small recovering cub captured the emotions of a nation, and Forest Service officials quickly realized the value the cub could provide as a spokesman of sorts for fire prevention. Renamed Smokey, the bear
was flown to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where thousands flocked to see the national icon. Throughout the decades, the Smokey we associate with forest fire safety has undergone major transformations, but his message has remained clear. “Only you can prevent forest fires” is a warning that, when delivered by a bear, seemed to
hit close to home. For millions, Smokey represents the beauty of our nation’s outdoor wilderness and the importance of preserving these national treasures. For 75 years, Smokey has diligently delivered the message, and, with any luck, his timely delivery will never get old.
what they believe is painful to the African Americans yet they recently had a celebration ceremony in Jamestown regarding slave trade and was quoted as wanting the African
American children to know their history. Sounds a little lopsided to me! We are in a society where we are constantly trying to teach our children not to be bullied and yet here we are as adults doing the same. I encourage the Hanover County School Board to stand firm in its decision to keep the school names. If we continue to go along the path of whining until we bully someone into changing things their way, racism will never end. In my opinion, you are only making it grow! This requirement applies to any mattress that is larger than a twin size. Folding your mattresses will increase the speed at which they can be compacted and reduce wait times. If the mattress cannot be folded in such a way for any reason, you are asked to take it to the Courthouse Solid Waste Convenience Center for disposal. For more information, call the Department of Public Works at 804-365-6181.

School crisis: Is compromise possible? Now fully immersed in the reformation initiative to change the identity of Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School, Hanover County faces a difficult dilemma. After the county was rattled by declarations that the identity of the schools were offensive to African-Americans, a public vote rejected the restructuring initiative. Subsequently, the Klu Klux Klan fueled the impasse when members from North Carolina invaded Hanover and held a demonstration. Then the Klan allegedly harassed some Hanover citizens in an effort to step up its trouble-making agenda. The Hanover NAACP filed a lawsuit against the Hanover County School Board and Hanover County based on the identity of the schools violating First Amendment rights. While the litigation is underway, the school board’s attention will be diverted from its primary mission. And irrespective of any courtroom outcome, more damage to Hanover’s citizens is likely. If the names remain unchanged, the NAACP, social reformers throughout America and liberal media outlets will step up claims that Hanover is a Dixie-whistling haven for racists and racism sympathizers. If the school identities are restructured, Hanover will expose itself to an invasion of white supremacists similar to that which occurred in Charlottesville and which ended tragically. Regrettably, a large number
of people on both sides of the issue likely know little about the men whose names are the crux of the confrontation, relying mainly on the perception that Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis were racists who supported the oppression of AfricanAmericans. That discernment is correct in the case of Jefferson Davis. If he could be raised from the dead to face racism charges in a neutral courtroom today, he would undoubtedly be found guilty. Davis, who was a Democrat congressman from Mississippi and a United States Secretary of War prior to switching sides and becoming the only President of the Confederate States of America, operated a large plantation in Mississippi with more than a hundred slaves. Simply stated, Davis exploited Negroes to enrich himself. He also was alleged to have been an active participant in the Knights of the Golden Circle, an assemblage of racists that aspired to split the nation in two parts with the South expanding its territory and its role in slavery. However, if Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson could be tried today, proving allegations of racism against them would be very difficult, if not impossible. Yes, the record shows that Lee and Jackson owned slaves, but the motivation and circumstances surrounding their involvement were fundamentally different than Davis as were their views on slavery, the Negro race and the future of African-Americans. Although Lee inherited about 60 slaves, a common estate-settlement practice in the middle of the 19th Century, he stated that slavery was a “moral and political evil in any country.” He accepted the institu-
tion in America as the best option to maintain a workable relationship until the Negro race gradually assimilated into Caucasian society under the influence of Christianity. He was pragmatic about the prevailing social, economic and educational disparities between the races in America prior to and during the War Between the States, believing the situation was harmful to both races with potentially disturbing consequences. With respect to that opinion, history has proven Lee to be prophetic. And Lee’s gut-wrenching decision to side with the South over the Union, the other political body he treasured, was based on his loyalty to Virginia. Following Virginia’s secession, in a letter of resignation to General Winfield Scott, Lee stated, “Save in the defense of my native State, I never desire again to draw my sword.” And after the Civil War ended, Lee opposed the erection of memorials, again proving him to be a man of vision given the trouble that monuments have instigated in modern America. As for the devout Christian, God-fearing Jackson, the six slaves who entered his household were treated decently, and they came to be there under different circumstances: Two teenage sons and their mother were given to the Jacksons as a wedding present; another requested that Jackson purchase him and allow him to work for his freedom; another, knowing Jackson’s good reputation, requested that he purchase her in a public slave auction; the sixth, a 4-year-old orphan with a learning disability, was given to Jackson’s second wife. Although Jackson did not apologize for slavery nor did he speak in favor of it, like Lee, he understood that
African-Americans were in a greatly disadvantaged predicament, and he believed the pathway to break the stranglehold of their bondage was Christianity. A key supporter of the Negro Sunday school at his church in Lexington, Virginia, Jackson helped to advance slaves. And this commitment didn’t end when he was immersed in the War Between the States. While Jackson was engaged in the Battle of First Manassas, he sent a note and a check to his pastor, stating that “… after a fatiguing day’s service, I remembered that I had failed to send my contribution for our colored Sunday
school …” Dishonoring the memories of Lee and Jackson by comparing them to white supremacists like Davis or those we see in modern America would be blatantly unjust. History is the best tool to avoid repeating humanity’s mistakes, and the record of these men should be preserved accurately. Hanover County is one of the unique places in our nation that citizens can visualize the sacrifices made for human rights. Battlefields like Cold Harbor and Gainesville often connect visitors to the warriors that willingly slaughtered each other over divergent ideolo-
gies, something rarely if ever seen on the scale of America’s Civil War. As such, Hanover’s history has inestimable value to present and future generations. Perhaps a compromise solution exists that would preserve Hanover’s tradition, yet assuage the sensitivities of those offended and also appease many of those against reformation. Hanover is now at a crossroads with potential trouble in each direction. Hopefully, the selected pathway delivers a peaceful outcome unlike the debacle in Charlottesville. Daniel Corso Mechanicsville

Station upgrades Plants relocated from Train Station and start date unknown Visitors Center to Ashland Police Department By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local
ASHLAND -- An Amtrak project aimed at improving the railroad station platform in Ashland still has no start date announced, and town officials have received no word on when the project might begin. With Train Day less six weeks away, it’s still unclear if the construction will disrupt plans for the event that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Last week, Mike Jennings, director of Public Works, told Ashland Town Council members that he had received no word from Amtrak regarding the upcoming project regarding start dates. “We are still waiting to receive a construction schedule and a work plan from Amtrak’s contractor,” Jennings said. Council member Kathy Abbott said it might be better for construction to begin after the Nov. 2 scheduled event, but acknowledged the project will
impact the event either this year or next. “My view is it’s going to disrupt Train Day, whether it’s this year or the next year; so we’ll just have to roll with the punches,” Abbott said. “My view is that it would be better if things haven’t progressed very far if it happened now.” Jennings also updated council on the Trolley Line Trail. “Unfortunately, that has snagged . . . because we ran into a construction issue with the drainage component of that project,” he said. “We have met with Timmons and we are working with them on a redesign. That project is at a standstill right now.” The original design for construction allowed drainage to run on the walkway. “We also thought there might be an erosion problem,” Jennings said. He said the delay in the Trolley project allowed con-

The train station gardens had been developed by the garden club with the assistance of the Town of Ashland as well as other civic entities. Designed and planted by the Ashland Garden Club, the

Rural Plains to offer 300 years of history with Harvest Day Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND — On Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Richmond National Battlefield Park invites the public to experience 300 years of history at its second annual Harvest Day. Offered in partnership with the American Battlefield Trust and the Rural Plains Foundation, this event features the Trust’s signature Generations program, games and crafts, artisans, living history and historic weapons demonstrations, and more. The event is free and open to the public. “We appreciate the outpouring of support we received from the community and are excited to bring this event back,” said park Superintendent Doyle Sapp. “Rural Plains holds a special
place in our local and national history, and we look forward to seeing everyone there again.” With roots dating back to the 1700s, the Rural Plains property witnessed the birth of America, experienced the ravages of the Civil War, and transitioned from a working plantation to a 124-acre National Park Service site. Throughout Harvest Day that rich history will be reflected in a variety of living history demonstrations and activities. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with Revolutionary War and Civil War camps and historic weapons demonstrations. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. the American Battlefield Trust will conduct Generations programs where adults and kids can experience the lives of American soldiers and civilians by learning how to charge
on a battlefield and exploring battlefield tactics. Visitors also will have the opportunity to meet Patrick Henry and learn about his connection to the Shelton family. Kids can enjoy crafts and play popular games of the 18th and 19th centuries. A full schedule of activities can be found at www.nps. gov/rich. Free parking is available at Rural Point Elementary School, located at 7161 Studley Rd. in Mechanicsville, with free shuttle bus service running continuously from 9:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Accessible parking is available on-site at 7273 Studley Rd. in Mechanicsville. Food and drink are not available at Rural Plains, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own snacks or pack

The Studley Ruritan Club will be hosting uits first annual

visual image, but now could be seen and enjoyed by the many residents and visitors making their way down England Street. While the ladies can do almost anything, it was through the help of others that this task was accomplished. A recent article thanked Mike Hildebrand and the men of James River Nursery for dig-
ging, wrapping and moving the plant material to the police station. The story continues as the Ashland Garden Club wishes to thank Todd Evan and his crew from the Town of Ashland who placed, dug, and planted the many, many varieties of bushes and plants. Each hole was enriched with soil amendment while, in the
heat of August, these wonderful men carefully planted each bit of plant material. An exclamation point will finish this story when the town places new mulch on the areas. As any gardener knows, one of the constant struggles in gardening is keeping the material alive. In this instance, it was made even more difficult with the plants having
been transplanted in the heat of summer. The town crew has remained diligent and dedicated as they water the plantings every few days. If you see them doing this task, please thank them for their care and hard work, as we join together to make Ashland a special and beautiful place to live, work, and visit.

Wildcats wear down Raiders in 2nd half fade pass to Warren on fourthand-16 to set Atlee up with a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line. “They were bringing pressure so it’s good that our line gave [Ohl] time to throw,” Warren said. “He put it up where I could get it and I just came down with it.” The big play couldn’t spark a score, as Deep Run kept the Raiders out of the end zone and ran out the clock. Kite accounted for 279 yards of total offense, including 146 on the ground to lead Deep Run. For Atlee, Warren accounted for 140 yards of offense. Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.
By Jonathan Howard For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – After two interceptions killed potential first-half scoring drives against Atlee, the Deep Run Wildcats and quarterback Bo Kite knew what it needed to accomplish after receiving the second-half kickoff. “We knew we needed to come down here and score [on the] first possession,” Kite said. “We got the kickoff and we were going to take it down and score.” Kite led an eight-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown run for the quarterback. The score gave Deep Run (2-0) a two-score lead in a 21-7 victory on the road over No. 9 Atlee (0-1). Deep Run found its way onto the scoreboard early in the game. After the defense forced a three-and-out on the game’s first possession, Kite found a wide-open Miles Ellis deep along the left sideline on the Wildcats’ first play. The slot receiver raced to the end zone for an 81-yard touchdown and an early 6-0 lead for the visitors. The offensive fireworks stayed on the sideline for the rest of the first half. Deep Run’s defense continued to hold Tyler Warren and the Atlee offense in check, but failed to make noise of its own. The next three Deep Run possessions ended with a

from Kody Ohl to Tyler Warren was broken up as time ran out. When Deep Run began the first drive of the second half, it became obvious to coach Chad Hornik that he had the better conditioned squad. The Wildcats gashed the Atlee defense, ending in Kite’s touchdown run.
“The second half the biggest thing was being in better game shape. I definitely think we were the more in-shape team,” Hornik said. “We weren’t cramping. We weren’t doing any of that. I think that helped us out and our boys gave an A-plus effort.” Atlee answered with a

Hawks show grit in opening loss to Monacan By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The scoreboard read Monacan 27, Hanover 0 as the young Hawks ran back onto the field for second-half action in their 2019 opener at home Friday night. When they shook hands at midfield to end the evening with the Chiefs, the score remained the same. While disappointed in not being able to score, the Hawk defense made a stand in the second half, keeping Monacan’s offense out of the end zone. For interim head coach David Butler, it was a night to discover a level of grit, intensity, and competition not seen in recent seasons by Hanover. For new offensive coordinator Sam Rogers, operating without perhaps his best lineman in Stephen Castle, out for the game due to injury, it was an opportunity to watch a very young group execute some fine plays in the midst of the expected growing pains. There are only four seniors listed on the Hanover roster this year. So, while the future has to be now for the Hawks, it gives some talented youngsters the chance to gain invaluable experience as this team looks to be the foundation for the return of the program to perennial postseason contenders. Monacan (1-0), also counting on newcomers in key positions, found its new quarterback as sophomore J.J. Allen threw for 199 yards and a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, finding Kyjuan Pettis in the middle of the end zone for a 28-yard strike with 9:12 left in the first quarter. Hanover (0-1) answered with an impressive opening drive of its own. Quarterback finding Jackson Currie on a hard hit by Pettus jarred the ball After a 5-yard penalty, Josiah Levi Huesman led the Hawks pass completion inside the 20. out of Currie’s hands and the Nelson hit a hole and raced up deep into Monacan territory, But 5 yards after the catch, a Chiefs recovered. a middle, using a stiff-arm to

quell his last would-be tackler, for an 81-yard touchdown run to increase the Chiefs’ lead to 13-0. Nelson, who would finish the night with 133 yards and three touchdown runs, the others from 10 and 13 yards, like Allen, is a new starter looking to continue Monacan’s playoff tradition. Head Coach Jim
Henderson was pleased with the glimpse of the future he saw from the sidelines. “We told this team from day one, we’ve done nothing,” Henderson noted. “The guys before them have put us in the position we’re in. We always have a target on our backs.” Butler is looking for leaders, too. One of them undoubtedly will be junior Emory Farmer, who earned 70 yards of total offense and stopped a wouldbe Monacan touchdown drive, stepping in front of a Chief receiver at the goal line for an interception midway through the third quarter and returning the ball 50 yards to midfield. That’s where the growing pains come in, as Hanover was not able to take advantage of the short field. It was one of several times where, while Henderson was pleased his defense pitched the shutout, he did not like Hanover’s ability to sustain several drives. Freshman Cole Elrod, at 6-3, has a bright future in the passing game. Honor Derricott, one of the team’s few seniors, brings an aggressive style to both the backfield and the defense. There are pieces all around for Butler and his staff to work with. But the roster is short, just 27 players listed on opening night, so avoiding injuries isn’t just key, it’s everything. Hanover takes to the road to battle Chancellor in Spotsylvania County Friday night. The Chargers are one of five teams in the new 16-team Region 4B who have started the season 0-2. Chancellor will be hungry for victory. For the Hawks, it’s an opportunity to take another step forward, win or lose, in the first stages of a project intended to return Hanover to its glory days. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
Patriots get top 10s in Pole Green XC Classic By Ashley Wood Richmond Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – Hurricane Dorian could not keep dozens of cross country athletes descend upon Pole Green Park Saturday morning for the Pole Green XC Classic. If anything, Dorian brought in unseasonably pleasant weather for the morning’s runs. And local teams took advantage, with the Midlothian girls and L.C. Bird boys both claiming early-season victories. Patrick Henry’s runners made the most of the conditions, too, with the Patriot boys finishing eighth and the girls finishing ninth. The Lee-Davis and Atlee boys finished 13th and 14th, respectively, while Hanover’s boys finished 19th. The Hawk girls finished 12th in the championship race. “It was a super-fast meet. You couldn’t ask for better conditions for a Saturday in September,” said Patrick Henry head coach Jeremy Dobrinski. While the best finisher from Hanover County was Hanover High School freshman Alli Crytser, who finished third in the girls championship race in 18:59.0, the Patriots had their own medalist: senior Emily Morris, who finished 11th in 19:49.4. “She ran her best time by, I think, about a minute faster than her previous best time,” Dobrinski said. “She put in a whole lot of work this summer and I’m excited to see where she can go with that.” James River junior Lindsey Hester finished fifth in the girls championship race with a time of 19:07.0. Midlothian sophomore Gabriella Garcia finished fourth with a time of 19:00.8, and Maggie Walker senior Mary Caroline Heinen finished second at 18:44.5. Heinen said she hopes this is

the start of a big season. “My big goal is the Foot Locker Nationals at the end of the season,” she said. “I want to qualify for that. Just getting better throughout the season and peaking later instead of in
the middle.” Bethany Graham, a senior from John Champe in Ashburn, won the girls championship race in 17:39.3. She said she is ready to win a state meet after a minor setback last season.
“I’ve been injured most cross country seasons, so I haven’t been able to get to that level yet.” Graham said. “I’m doing a lot of strength training and a lot of recovery stuff.” Midlothian’s Kylie Bonser
and Caroline Bowe also finished in the top 10. Bowe finished sixth with of time of 19:13.2, and Bonser came in eighth with 19:17.9. Annabel Schepker finished 13th in the championship race in 19:59.2 and Deep Run’s Eva Brooks wasn’t far behind, finishing in 17th in 20:24.5. Three places behind her was Maggie Walker’s Brenna Luczak in 20:31.2. Local schools dominated the boys top 10. L.C. Bird came out on top, followed by Glen Allen (second), Deep Run (fourth), Maggie Walker (fifth), Midlothian (sixth), Saint Christopher’s (ninth), and James River (10th). Deep Run was led by senior Colby Burcham’s second-place finish of 15:55.0. “[The race] went on a little faster than I expected it to,” Burcham said. “Mile 2 is a little rough in the woods. I lost someone but managed to catch back up to him and ended up getting second.” Burcham said he wants to improve this season by running close to 15 minutes and 20 seconds and winning a state title again. “I’ve been doing a lot of mileage this summer and trying to hit 55-60 miles each week,” he said. Virginia Episcopal’s Daniel O’Brien won the championship race. He said it was a fun day and there was some great competition. “It was a good race. It was definitely what I wanted, definitely a great beginning of the season race,” O’Brien said. In addition to Burcham, L.C. Bird junior Jacob Plummer finished sixth at 16:11.4, and Cosby senior Garrett Schultz came in seventh with 16:13.1. L.C Bird senior Brendan Taylor was right behind, finishing in eighth at 16:13.6, followed by Atlee junior Ian Sellors in ninth

Celebrating her 90th birthday Submitted photo
Bennett Funeral Home recently hosted a party for long-time employee Louise Dement, who was celebrating her 90th birthday. She has worked as the receptionist for over 20 years, greeting and answering questions regarding the funeral home’s services. Owner Andrew Morehead said, “Louise’s warm and friendly nature is a comfort to many.” In this photo, Louise shows “nine” for the crowd that gathered to join in her birthday celebration at Bennett’s in Mechanicsville.

Ashland Town Council discussed improvements, specifically a start date, for the Amtrak Train Station.

tractors to immediately address a sewer line problem on North Snead Street that required immediate attention. Council approved $54,000 to correct that problem and work should begin almost immediately. In early 2018, council approved a wellness program that encourages employees to maintain healthy lifestyles and rewards those who engage in healthy activities and events. Town Manager Joshua Farrar presented an update to council on the initial year of the program. “I think it’s largely been very successful,” Farrar said. “Now that we have seen the review, we are going to encourage more participation amongst our employees,” the town manager said. “We’ve genuinely tried to incentivize people to make the right decisions.” Once employees complete a
tier of the wellness guide, they are compensated with cash. Council approved about $25,000 for the initial year of the program and just short of $20,000 was actually used in FY 2018-2019. Twenty-nine employees from a pool of about 64 full-time workers utilized the program that included activities like running, walking soccer, biking, hiking, skating and canoeing. Employees get points for having annual physical checkups. “We know that is a preventative measure,” Farrar said. “The better health someone is in, the better employee they are.” In other matters, Farrar told council that the Hanover Review, a quarterly newsletter published by Hanover County, will now include four pages exclusively of Ashland news. “We are going to have four pages dedicated to the town,” Farrar said. “We want to get out public information and we are going to use this the best we can.”
Family History Day: ‘Searching for Your Ancestors’ RICHMOND – The 1619 arrival of Africans marked a pivotal moment in Virginia’s history and eventually caused major shifts in its economy and culture. The 400th anniversary of this seminal event invites us to examine its influence on the practice of family history as well as the impact of subsequent migrations to, from, and within the commonwealth. Many American families have ancestors who migrated through Virginia,
crisscrossing the map within historical migration routes. Africans and African Americans suffered the harshest experience of all migrants, experiencing the horrors of slave ships and having their families forcibly separated in the routine transactions of the American slave trade to which Virginia was essential. Famines, land clearings, poverty, and religious persecution pushed British and European souls out of the Old World to find a new life and new land in
Virginia and beyond, whether as indentured servants or willing immigrants. In the process, Native people lost much of their land to the colonizers through warfare and forced resettlement. This year’s Virginia Family History Day Conference, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Library of Virginia at 800 E. Broad St. in Richmond, explores the ways in which the search for ancestors in records is affected by these historical currents.
