County receives almost $23,000 from VDEM grant Staff Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Hanover County has received $22,997 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) in grant funding for the Emergency Management Performance Grant Program (EMPG). The county’s amount is among an award of $2.7 million throughout the state. The EMPG program is a federally
funded, state distributed, grant program that focuses on funding planning, operations, equipment acquisitions, trainings, exercises, construction and renovation efforts at the local government level. “Delivering core capabilities requires the combined efforts of the whole community, rather than the exclusive effort of any single organization or level of government,” said State Coordinator Jeff Stern. “The grant program supports efforts
across the Commonwealth to build and sustain core capabilities across key mission areas including prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery. Federal grant funding is essential in supporting local emergency management programs.” Grant funding for the program is available to cities, counties and those towns recognized as emergency management jurisdictions under Title 44 of the Code of Virginia.

achievement disparities among student groups; student absenteeism; overall proficiency and growth in English and math; the progress of English learners towards English-language proficiency; college, career, and civic readiness; graduation and completion; dropout rate; and, more. Performance on each school quality indicator is rated at one of three levels, as follows: Level One — Meets or exceeds standard or sufficient improvement. Level Two — Near standard or making sufficient improvement. Level Three — Below standard. Schools earn one of three accreditation ratings based upon their performance in these areas, as follows: Accredited—Schools with all school quality indicators at either Level One or Level Two. Accredited with Conditions—Schools with one or more school quality indicators at Level Three. Accreditation Denied—Schools that fail to adopt or fully implement required corrective actions to address Level Three schoolquality indicators. “While we welcome the
increased rigor of the new state accreditation standards, we are cognizant that test scores captured at a single moment in time do not define the success or worth of a student, teacher, school, or division. We will continue to support and advocate for further revisions to the accreditation criteria that are practical and consistent with our sustained focus on relevance, equity, and innovation. Above all, our primary goal is to provide our students with exceptional learning experiences that will help to ensure they are wellrounded, life-ready, and productive citizens,” said Dr. Gill. Newspapers impacted life before career started
Resident: Last word on school names
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ewspapers have always been a significant part of my family’s home. Growing up, we received morning and afternoon editions. I was more inclined to peruse the hometown publication, which is where my 45-year career got its start. The kitchen table was our version of discussing current affairs through whatever meal was being served by mom. My parents were avid news junkies and kept the conversation going from the hard news like President Richard Nixon’s resignation during the Watergate Scandal or the local cat named Midnight that could “talk.” (I witnessed that interview -- all I heard was “meow.”)

The point here is that newspapers are an important part of our everyday lives. You’ll get the entire story of a governmental meeting, what’s happening in your child’s school, your neighbors celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary, and who scored the most points in one of many sports played throughout the county. We are celebrating National Newspaper Week, which means the focus turns to you, the reader and advertiser. How we work in this industry is always with our communities in mind. And, often, we are your neighbors. We enjoy getting to know you and that special feeling when you call or email with a tone that makes you seem like a long-time friend. We share our voice and opinions and welcome yours. Our goal is always to provide you with the
news and sports that you want. The value of newspapers has been part of my life since I started reading. Conversations about articles through the years bring back memories of lively debates and thought-provoking moments. Being employed by newspapers has brought many rewards, especially getting to know you. As we observe the 79th annual National Newspaper Week, with a theme of “Think F1rst -- Know Your 5 Freedoms,” we can’t emphasize enough how important your role is in our continued successes. I am thankful for a dedicated staff and supportive supervisors. We’re literally on the same page when it comes to what we’re doing at Richmond Suburban News. To wrap up, I ask that you just keep reading.
If we are going to “move on from the Civil War” let’s from here on, forever, also move on from slavery and stop using it as a crutch to get what some want! A few comments suggest saving Hanover County a lot of money by just “changing the names”. Well, let’s flip the record over: How about NAACP “just” drop their lawsuit, and, as I said before, stop being an adult bully and working to make sure any future schools in Hanover will have generic names only. As we all know with the growth the Hanover County Planning Commission and the Hanover County Board of Supervisors are approving there certainly very soon will be a new need for schools. ony of the clicking tracks and scenery the dining car than just the food or Enough!!! that too soon became uniform. individual attention. Riding the rail losing integral part in the dining car By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Is the Amtrak dining car headed for the same fate as plastic drinking straws — a form of social extinction prompted by societal changes in attitude? In an effort to save more than $2 million annually, Amtrak recently announced a plan that will phase out the dining car and freshly prepared
meals on many of its trains. Many contend the soothing nature of the dining car was the last symbol of train travel when it provided a unique, exotic experience. Others contend those romantic memories have been just that for many years, citing bad service and mediocre food on the once Five Star eateries. My earliest memories of train travel are centered on trips to the dining car. It was a respite from the monot-

that is the victim of bullying. Some people say that the names of the schools are racist, as are the team names. Let’s look at it this way for a minute: The term “rebel” often referred to the Army of the South. A rebel is anyone who fights against the system. By that definition, wasn’t Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a rebel? Confederate is even easier to explain. The Southern
and those chance personal encounters with strangers prompted officials to make the move beginning this fall. One explained that millennials don’t like the idea of sitting with people with whom they are unacquainted, and are more comfortable with pre-packaged meals served in their berths. If that’s true, it’s sad. But, I believe there are a majority of millennials who,
given the choice, would still opt for the dining car, especially those who have suffered through a pre-packaged sandwich in the club car. And that theory that millennials are uncomfortable interacting with strangers also is questionable in my mind. Sure, it’s true we live in a world of conveniences that don’t enhance personal interaction. We have our groceries delivered to our doors fol-
lowed by take-out served up by a delivery driver, and buying clothes at the department store is the exception, not the rule. The new dining car policy follows that line of thinking and officials say customers welcome the flexibility of extended ordering hours and room service versus the often long waits and limited selections in the dining car. Trips that require overnight
travel for one night will be the first routes affected by the changes, and an Asian noodle bowl will replace steaks cooked to order. Understanding the immense pressure on rail travel, and its record of unprofitable operation for decades, it’s hard to criticize them for attempting to save money by eliminating kitchens and staff aboard the trains. But, I think they might be
underestimating the potential backlash created by the changes, and they might be surprised to learn that the dining car is a part of Americana that travelers are not anxious to surrender. If the changes don’t work, and Amtrak revives meal service served by wait staff, you can be assured the fault will be placed firmly at the feet of the group that caused the problem: those doggone millennials.
states were known as “The Confederate States of America.” To call either of these sports teams of these names is, in my opinion, ignorant. Next, let’s look at the violation of rights. The names of these schools have nothing to do with freedom of speech. To say that these names violate the 14th amendment makes no sense. The names do not violate anything. No one is being denied anything. Finally, let’s look at the
racism of the names. Neither school denies any race the right to attend it. Yet, there is the United Negro College Fund, which is only for African-Americans. The NAACP itself represents African-Americans. Aren’t both of these organizations “racist?” There is no college fund for Caucasians. Finally, let’s look at the schools named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama. What if these names
made Caucasian students feel denied their 1st and 14th amendment rights? Would these students be looked at as racist? Probably. Would these names be changed? Absolutely not! It would be stated that these names are very important to African-American history. This is very hypocritical, for why is it right that the history of our country to be protected only if deemed important by African-Americans? Stonewall Jackson and
Lee-Davis are racist to African-Americans, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama are okay for school names because they are African-American. See the hypocrisy? Maybe you should just sit down and think about it. We are all Americans and we all take pride in our country. Our history may not be all rainbows and sunshine. There are bigger problems in our state and country than the
names of schools. Why not focus on these rather than trying to focus on things that are blown out of proportion? The solution? Let’s name our schools after plants and animals and get rid of names of historical figures. But some people would still complain because -- without something to gripe about -- some people just aren’t happy. Paul Dickerson Mechanicsville see LETTERS, pg. 9

In her latest anti-Confederate letter to The Local, Patricia Lassiter makes a “direct quote” from President Jefferson Davis without giving a source to that quote and with the purpose of painting him a really bad guy. Below I make a direct quote from President-to-be Abraham Lincoln, made during the famous debate with Stephen Douglas on Sept. 18, 1858, as reported in the Chicago Press and Tribune. The Chicago Times published a nearly identical quote. “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races [applause] -- that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” Darn, does that mean all the schools named after Lincoln throughout nation must change their names? The bottom line is that “We the People” of Hanover County voted 84% to keep the names of the Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle Schools. That is cemocracy! One of the criticisms was my use of “noteworthy business success” to describe Trump. Most people would argue that a net worth of few billion dollars – as of March, 2019, Forbes listed Trump at $3.1 billion while Bloomberg had him at $2.8 billion – qualifies as “noteworthy business success.” Yes, Trump reportedly borrowed between $1 million and $60 million from his father in his move up the wealth ladder. Capitalists use many resources, sometimes family money, to take advantage of profitable opportunities or to create them. There is no shame in that, but billionaires frequently embrace self-serving, ruthless behavior, which is an entirely different consideration. It is true that Barack Obama inherited a bursting real estate bubble, which had been expanding for more than a decade thanks to private sector greed and public policies that encouraged the disregard of fiscally sound lending practices for home buyers, especially first homes. During Obama’s eight-year reign, the Great Recession ended when the supply of homes and the demand of qualified buyers gradually shifted back into normality, and the real estate and other financial markets began to recover. However, on Obama’s watch, the nation’s debt surged to approximately $20 trillion, economic growth stagnated, and the military became underfunded. Trump’s initiatives to remove government barriers that were stifling private sector enterprise have helped to

stimulate the job progress and the thriving economy we are now witnessing. Trump’s integrity has been challenged on an unprecedented scale; 12,000 lies is an extraordinarily large number, even for a sitting president. The New York Times, CNN and MSN must be expending considerable resources tracking them. Assuming that Trump lied once or thousands of times, assailing his integrity would be entirely appropriate, but not necessarily make him unfit to be president. We would have to consider if such lie(s) were felonious in nature and/or a betrayal of Constitutional responsibilities, including

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Joe, 557470, is 2-yearold (estimated) male neutered ptitbull. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Joe is a sweet man who has been in the shelter for almost three months now. He came to the shelter as a stray. Joe has many friendly qualities that are desirable in a dog. He loves to be around people. Joe also is really good on a leash. He is getting good at learning commands. Joe should be suitable for any household. Diva, 561227, is a 1-year-old female spayed domestic short-haired feline. She has had her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Diva is a very nice cat. The shelter doesn’t have much previous history on her but one thing is obvious, she was someone’s cat. Diva is well litter-trained and tidy. She is not overly active, but she loves human attention. She has a constant purr motor. Diva will probably do best in an indoor living environment. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.

securing the nation or harming the electorate. For example, William “I-didn’t-have-sex-with-thatwoman” Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky and/ or other women were likely not felonious nor a betrayal of his Constitutional duty whereas Richard “I’m-not-acrook” Nixon’s connection to the Watergate Hotel scandal was criminal in nature. Anyone interested in examples of the level of deceit that can occur inside the Oval Office should watch the Ken Burns’ series on Vietnam, which exposes the powerful people who ordered millions of young Americans, including this writer at that time, to imperil their lives and limbs in a strategically unwinnable war. Some of the consequential damage can be observed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Although Trump’s opponents have continued to allege collusion with Russia, they have yet to provide credible evidence on that charge, much like extreme right-wing allegations against Obama failed to yield proof that he was treasonous, wasn’t an American citizen and so forth. That said, the recent incident involving Ukraine may prove to be extremely harmful to Trump, perhaps his political undoing. And such an outcome would cause quite a bit of damage to the Republican Party, which hopes to prevail in the 2020 election. At this point in time, we have to wait until the incident is thoroughly investigated and/or legally processed before drawing any conclusion. Historically, the public has mostly relied on traditional media outlets for news, hoping to get truth, yet the release of isolated fact(s) or unreliable/ speculative information has occasionally distorted real-
Supporter tells why she will vote for Wyatt It was disappointing to see the continued harangue about the Chris Peace/Scott Wyatt campaign in the recent letters. With only a few weeks left until the election, is it too much to ask that we come together as a district to support the candidate who will keep us from turning blue? Instead of rehashing the process that Mr. Peace supported up until the Hanover
mass meeting; instead of correcting the false statement that “Chris Peace voters were being denied the right to support him” (it was Chris who told his supporters not to attend the convention as it was just a “Wyatt rally”); instead of decrying polls and pointing fingers, I’d like to share my experience with Scott Wyatt and his team. Having volunteered with the Wyatt campaign early on, I witnessed first-hand how Scott responded personally and with genuine interest to anyone who approached him with questions or concerns. I watched people who were angry and confused about all the campaign madness change their minds about Scott once they got to know him and experienced his positive attitude and enthusiasm for meeting his future constituents throughout district. I saw him reach out to people from all backgrounds, eager to hear their stories and understand their life situations – which was reassuring, because when I was making those hundreds of phone calls in the early days I kept hearing people say they felt forgotten and dismissed by the incumbent. I especially appreciated Scott’s determination to take the high road when his character was being smeared by someone who had once been a friend. Scott is a good man, a servant leader, an active member of the community and someone we can depend on to rep-

resent all of us in the General Assembly. Yes, any name can be written in on that ballot and we all have a right to thumb our noses at an outcome we didn’t like. To what end? Is it worth it, in these politically contentious times, to lose a conservative seat in the General Assembly by splintering the votes? Only if you love what’s coming from the Left these days. Northern Virginia has already annexed itself to D.C. A vote for Scott is more than a vote for the 97th District; it’s a vote to benefit all Virginians. Cecilia Thomas Mechanicsville
Resident: vote for Wyatt and McDougle In one month, our commu-
nity will have the opportunity to ensure that the Republicans maintain the majority in the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate. Control of the General Assembly is critical to countering the New York style leadership of Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam, who was able to maintain his position despite his “black face” controversy and his shocking stance on post-birth infanticide. In our area, the Republican nominees include Scott Wyatt for delegate and Ryan McDougle for Senate. In addition to being prolife and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, Scott Wyatt’s conservative platform also includes decreasing regulations, managing growth, lowering taxes and spending, supporting small businesses and public safety. Scott’s record with the Hanover County Board of Supervisors shows his commitment to those prin-
ciples. Ryan McDougle has represented the district since 2002. His record with both the House and the Senate reflects his principles. He knows that our families thrive best with job growth, lower taxes, and more affordable and flexible healthcare. Ryan consistently stands with our veterans, law enforcement and the individual’s rights as guaranteed by the Second Amendment. Ryan defends the lives of the unborn. Wyatt and McDougle reflect Hanover values and will serve us well in the General Assembly. Deb Wetlaufer Mechanicsville

ity or masked it. Complicating the acquisition of truth in today’s world is the proliferation of social media, which has frequently been a breeding ground for fabricated stories. Therefore, taking time to separate fact from fiction is always prudent before rushing to judgment and advocating or discarding any politician. Certainly, Americans aspire to be led by individuals possessing the best fused attributes that Harry Truman, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa and Ronald Reagan possessed, but such a person that could quench this thirst may not exist. Until that candidate tosses their hat in the ring, this nation under God must tolerate whoever survives the no-holds-barred battle for the top job and hope that person prioritizes the principles upon which the nation was founded. Local NSDAR chapter celebrating Day of Service By Lee Lythoe Special to The Mechanicsville Local As a child of the Baby Boom Generation, I learned to read with Dick and Jane, knew that penmanship counted, and my research tool was the good old encyclopedia. Technology back then was a typing class taught on a manual typewriter. How different school is today! While I sometimes still feel like an immigrant in a strange world, students today are natives to this digital age. Technology affects every aspect of life. It aids students in learning at their own pace and style, while fostering creativity, and promoting independence. Technology has enhanced the
way students learn, has aided in student knowledge retention, and engages students with the world. The Scotchtown Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, would like to recognize the staff of Technology Services of Hanover County Public Schools for everything they do on a daily basis to provide our youth with the skills necessary to succeed in this rapidly changing digital age. As technology careers become in greater demand, technology has become a necessity for success. How far will technology go in the future? The possibilities are endless. healthy way to process loss and can be very effective in helping these families cope in a way that otherwise hasn’t been available.” The gift comes from a Virginia couple, Mark “Tracy” and Shannon Armes from Wilsons, who utilized a Flexmort CuddleCot™ when their daughter Skylar Jean Armes was tragically stillborn at full-term in October 2016. Their donated CuddleCot was dedicated at MRMC on Sept. 28 just ahead of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in October in honor of their late daughter and her third birthday. This is the first such device available at MRMC for bereaved families. “We are grateful a CuddleCot was available when our daughter Skylar
sent out the second week of September. The club needs responses by Friday, Oct. 25. The parade route follows Snead Street along Thompson Street to England Street then turns down Henry Street and ends at Archie Canon Boulevard. Organizations that have not participated in the past but would like to be consider for this year’s parade may apply at https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/AshlandParade. Adding entries after the lineup has been established is difficult and may prove impossible. For more information, email ashlandkiwanis@gmail. com. was born. It gave us invaluable time to bond with her,” Mark and Shannon said. “Even though she was born still, the CuddleCot enabled us to keep Skylar with us in our room, hold her, bathe her, dress her, and capture photographs that must last a lifetime -- priceless memories our family will cherish forever.” While there is no way to ease the pain associated with the death of a child, the CuddleCot system can provide a small source of comfort to those parents and loved ones that are faced with overwhelming grief and who might otherwise have a very limited opportunity to visit with their baby. “We pray this gift of time will provide comfort to families that experience the devastating loss of a baby. For those we hold in our arms for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever,” added the Armes family.

Patriots take early lead, hold off Raiders By Dan Fritz For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – The Patrick Henry offensive line took control of the line of scrimmage and allowed quarterback Alex Sikkar to have a big night as he amassed 147 yards rushing – with three touchdowns – and 141 yards passing against the Raider defense as the Patriots knocked off county rival Atlee 32-23. “We were able to fix the little things this week in practice, and it showed by us executing at key times” said Patrick Henry head coach Ken Wakefield. “The biggest thing was we were able to finish drives.” That was certainly the case. The Patriots found the end zone on their first five possessions. Meanwhile, the defense for Patrick Henry was able to contain Atlee quarterback Tyler Warren for most of the night. After an opening-drive touchdown by the Patriots on a Sikkar 11-yard run, the Raiders answered just nine seconds later. Warren went to the play action and found a speedy Alex Oliver for a quick 53-yard strike. After the extra point, Atlee took its only lead of the game 7-6 early in the first quarter. Patrick Henry countered with a steady dose of Tyler Newell and Samandre Williams on the ground and a balanced passing attack from Sikkar. A

Patrick Henry’s Antonio Ford (5) leaps above and away from Atlee pursuers in the Patriots’ 32-23 victory over the Raiders Friday.
17-yard strike to Zeik Williams set the Patriots up just outside the goal line. A Williams 2-yard run finished the drive and allowed the Patriots to regain the lead. In a game that featured no punts by either side, Sikkar
would extend his team’s lead to 18-10 on a 24-yard scamper halfway through the second quarter. A big kickoff return by Alex Oliver started the Raiders’ next possession near midfield. A long run by Caleb Warren set
the offense up with a prime scoring opportunity. On a thirdand-goal from just outside the 10-yard line, Tyler Warren eluded the pass rush, but was forced outside the pocket. He rolled to his left, then threw back across the field on a pass
that was intercepted by Jayden Mines at the goal line. With not much time to work with, the Patriots looked to deliver a huge blow to the Raiders just before halftime.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – On the first crisp, overcast Saturday of this football season, the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets won their fourth consecutive game, defeating Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Guilford 34-21. Their performance was far from crisp, and the outlook for the second half of their regular season is certainly cloudy. When asked what went right for his team in the victory, Yellow Jackets head coach Pedro Arruza paused and thought for a moment. “We won. That’s a positive,” Arruza said. “I thought that was a very underwhelming performance.” While there were outstanding individual perforsee R-MC, pg. 24

Confederates recover, overcome Hanover By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover drew first blood in the battle between the county’s two 0-4 football teams Friday night, with two quick touchdowns at the beginning of the second quarter lifting the Hawks to a 14-0 lead. Unfortunately for Hanover, visiting Lee-Davis was determined it would not fall apart, and the Confederates regained their composure, overtaking the Hawks and scoring the games last two touchdowns en route to a 35-24 victory. The comeback was indicative of the effort the Confederates have put in all season, even if the results had not been reflected in the win column. “I told our team just now, an 0 and 4 team could have very well packed it in,” said LeeDavis head football coach Ryan Turnage. “We fought and got our way back. We answered from then on out. We found some things on offense … we found some things we could do – and that’s what we did. “Our kids played hard. They’ve been playing hard all year. Tonight, we finally executed a little bit. And we got guys healthy. That’s big.” Lee-Davis quarterback Mike Joyce provided much of the spark igniting the Confederates’ recovery, rushing 13 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns and completing 7-of-9 passes for 45 yards and another touchdown. Lavell Williams did his share for the Confederate win, too, carrying the ball nine times for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Chase Stattelman had nine carries for 52 yards. After a largely ineffectual first quarter, Hanover started

An ensuing stop deep in Hanover territory gave the Confederates excellent field position on their next drive. Starting at the Hawk 26, LeeDavis needed just five plays to score on a 12-yard pass from Joyce to Dallas Hairfield with 4:24 remaining in the half. The Hawks were undaunted, however. After the ensuing kickoff return and a Lee-Davis personal foul put Hanover at the Confederate 28, the Hawks took just three plays to regain the lead on a 20 yard pass from Huesman to Elrod. Samardge again provided the extra point to make it 21-14 Hanover with 3:22 before intermission. Lee-Davis refused to coast toward the break. The Raiders did show resiliency to start the second half. A 16-yard pass from Warren to Carter Nash, coupled with a roughing the passer call brought Atlee to the fringe of the red zone. The next play, Warren called his own number, getting outside
the Patriot’s containment, and pounded his way in for a score to bring the Raiders back to within 7 points. That would be as close as the score would get for the rest of the night. Patrick Henry went on a long drive lasting most of the third quarter, culminating in another Sikkar touchdown run. “Every time Atlee gained momentum, we did a great job of taking it back” Wakefield

Arruza finished with 18 saves. The sophomore has had to grow up fast. “We had been playing a senior at goalkeeper (Allison Rathbone), but she was just too valuable on the field,” said Patrick Henry head coach Abbie Rossman. “So we brought up a sophomore keeper and we’re hoping that we can keep grooming her to get better at each game and each season as well.”

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor -At the beginning of the 2019 golf season, Hanover head golf coach Phil Hein handicapped the season. He predicted that Monacan would handily win the Region 4B South championship. He predicted that either his Hawks or Patrick Henry would finish second and win the other ticket to compete for the Region 4B title. After the Region 4B championship at Dogwood Trace Golf Club in Petersburg on Sept. 30, Hein’s prediction proved spot on. Monacan won with a score of 307. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they finished a stroke behind Patrick Henry in the battle for second place. The Patriots collectively carded a 314, while Hanover scored 315. “It was just one of those days,” said Patrick Henry head coach Dave Hudak. “It could have gone either way. … It was a matter of a couple of strokes per player. ning game,” Arruza said. “We’re dropping a lot of passes that’s killing drives. I can probably list 10 drives in my head that were killed this year because of guys just dropping routine passes.” The offensive line allowed a pair of sacks in the first half to a Guilford defense that only got to the quarterback twice in their first four games. The first set up the Quakers’ first scoring drive, capped by a 2-yard run by quarterback Derrien Phillips, making his first collegiate start. The Yellow Jackets answered with an eight-play drive of their own, as quarterback Presley Egbers’ 13 yard run and Tre Frederick’s 17 yard scamper set up a 9-yard run from quarterback Andrew Ihle into the end zone to tie the game at 7.
Early in the second quarter, Randolph-Macon took the lead when, on a third down at the Guilford 13, Egbers found room on the right side of his line, racing to the goal line for the touchdown and a 14-7 advantage. Later in the quarter, a 37-yard pass from Phillips to Guilford’s leading receiver, Jermaine Russell, helped set up a 2-yard touchdown run from Shanaan McKoy to again tie the score. Foster, who accounted for 241 return yards on the day, made his mark on the game with a critical 65-yard punt return to the Guilford 34. Six plays later, Gavin Stone’s 26-yard field goal gave the Yellow Jackets a 17-14 lead going into halftime. Whitehead’s biggest impact

came on the first drive of the third quarter, as the Quakers marched down the field on the verge of retaking the lead. Phillips took off from the Randolph-Macon 28 on a quarterback draw, racing inside the 10. From behind, Whitehead lunged, punching the football out of Phillips’ arm, sending it rolling into the end zone and out of bounds. The touchback broke the back of the Guilford offense, and the Yellow Jackets took advantage. Despite a penalty that wiped out an Egbers touchdown pass to Trey Owens – guilty of offensive pass interference – Egbers found Nariq Bailey in the back corner of the end zone from 22 yards out for a score. Instead of 21-17 Quakers, it was 24-14 Yellow
Jackets. Egbers, who went 16-for-21 for 160 yards and two scores, hit Foster on a 5-yard pass for his second passing score in the fourth quarter. Frederick, who did not play in the second half, finished with 52 yards on 10 carries. The defense had four sacks of Phillips, who, after completing 8-of-13 passes in the first half for 98 yards, only completed 10-of-20 in the second half for only 85 yards. Whitehead and Matthew Vergara each had 11 tackles, while Joel Calkins added nine. It is important to note that, whether you are playing up to your expected standards or not, winning back-to-back road games in the ODAC is never easy. The Yellow Jackets
return to Day Field Saturday for Homecoming. The Shenandoah Hornets, embarrassed by Randolph-Macon in Winchester last year, will come calling with their new quarterback Ben Agostino, who went 36-of-44 for 509 yards and six touchdowns in a victory Saturday over Southern Virginia University. Whitehead and the rest of the Yellow Jacket defense are in for a stern test. “Here’s a positive. We’re 3-0 in the league, and 4-1, and we haven’t played very well,” Arruza said. “I think we need a wake-up call.” Shenandoah looks to provide one Saturday at 1 p.m. in Ashland. ing families and communities together to show their support. Luck Chevrolet and Chevy Youth Sports are proud to help the Patrick Henry Patriot Club bring so many smiles to kids and families in Ashland.” said Ross Luck, general manager for Luck Chevrolet. “Chevrolet believes in the power of play as a foundation for young people to build the skills needed to be successful in the future.” The Chevy Youth Sports program gives Chevrolet dealerships the opportunity to provide support for youth athletic programs across the country. In 2019, more than 500 Chevrolet dealerships will participate in the program nationwide. “Chevrolet vehicles are designed and built with busy
