Hanover County citizens joined millions of Americans in honoring their military veterans on Friday at a poignant ceremony held at the Hanover Veterans Memorial at Hanover Wayside Park. More than 200 people attended the annual event, a staple since the memorial opened four years ago. South Anna District supervisor and memorial co-founder John E. Gordon Jr. delivered the keynote address, recounting his Vietnam experience and the bonds he formed while fighting for his country in Southeast Asia.

Drafted as a young man, Gordon said he didn’t know what to expect when he got his induction notice or, as he described it, an “invitation from President Richard Nixon.” He said the following months transformed his life and formed friendships and bonds that are still fresh in his mind today, many years later. “This was an invitation delivered to a teenager to join with others in doing the work of a man,” Gordon, then only four months out of high school, said. “I was not ready That fear and apprehension subsidJim Ridolphi/The Local ed as Gordon completed basic training South Anna District supervisor John E. see VETERANS, pg. 31
